Crawley Town lost 3-1 to Cambridge United today at the Cledera Abbey Stadium. Here is a disappointed Scott Lindsey after the game.
Transcript
00:01Scott, thanks for joining us. Obviously another tough defeat on the road here today.
00:05Henry, what were your thoughts on your game?
00:07Yeah, I'm really disappointed obviously with the outcome of that game.
00:13I just don't really know.
00:16I think that the stats would suggest that we're in the game.
00:23We're alright. We're not.
00:26We're not. We can't defend in moments. We're so easy to score against at the moment.
00:36The first goal is just madness really. We've defended corners actually alright.
00:41I think we've actually defended set pieces really well in the past.
00:45I think it was something like we'd faced 82 set pieces against us without a goal.
00:51And then today we just capitulated.
00:53First one, no one attacks it. It bounces and then we can't deal with it.
00:58Easy goal for them to score.
01:00Second goal, again a set piece.
01:03Force to the edge of the box. No one engages.
01:05Kid puts it in. Easy goal.
01:08And then the third goal, we're just really open and don't get back in.
01:15I see my players, I see the back three defending and no one else in the picture.
01:22We're just not hard working enough at the moment which is costing us and I've got to change it.
01:30Yeah, I'm disappointed. Really disappointed because, like I say, if you look at the stats, we create probably more than them.
01:38Again, we only score one goal.
01:40Yeah, we're just weak.
01:47And set pieces, our set pieces were terrible today.
01:50I think we put, we must have put seven or eight in the goalkeeper's hands.
01:55You know, we worked so hard on it as well, this is why.
01:58I don't get the character at the moment, it's not coming through.
02:01There's no character, you know.
02:03I hear one player in there, in the dressing room now, who, you know, and I need more.
02:10I need more. Yeah, disappointed.
02:12You know, I suppose one of the biggest frustrations at the moment is the manner of goals we conceded.
02:16A lot of them seem to be sort of our own doing.
02:19Well, it's two set pieces, so you've got to defend them moments better.
02:23That's probably not our own doing.
02:25We've got to defend them better.
02:27Two set pieces, you can't defend.
02:32I don't understand how we can defend so well for so many games on set pieces and then we capitulate today.
02:37It doesn't make sense to me, but there's a lot that's not making sense to me at the moment with the group
02:42because I see a team that are lacking a bit of confidence, obviously, and we talk a good game.
02:49I think we talk a good game.
02:51You know, I see it in training, we talk a good game and we prepare a good game
02:55and then we don't really, we kind of pretend to deliver it at the moment.
03:00So, yeah, they're really hard to take and hard to watch and, you know, it's just some great luck.
03:09We get six minutes put up on the board, which, I don't know where we get six minutes put up on the board.
03:14It should be more like 12, the amount of time that was taken on every pick.
03:18But anyway, we've got six minutes.
03:19We've wasted four of them minutes by giving two silly fouls away.
03:23Just, I don't know what we're doing.
03:25But I'm the leader, so it's my fault, so I will sort it.
03:29What's sort of puzzling is there's a lot of talent out there on the pitch.
03:33There's a lot of good players. We're signing some very good players this summer.
03:35But for some reason, something isn't just sort of clicking and going right, is it?
03:39Talent means nothing if you haven't got the heart and desire to go with it.
03:45It means nothing. You may as well not have it.
03:47It means nothing. It means absolutely zero.
03:52So, yeah, I need to see more want-will determination, aggression to work the opposition.
04:04So, slow at times, you know.
04:06Yeah, we're miles off it at the moment. Miles off it without performance.
04:10Yeah, it's natural and unexpected, but you can see some of the players out there,
04:14especially towards the end of the game, getting frustrated.
04:16It's one of the main aims now to just sort of calm everybody down, have a little reset,
04:19you know, try and get back on track.
04:21Yeah, I suppose so. I think, like I say, you look at the stats.
04:26Completely in charge of the ball.
04:30We create, again, chance after chance.
04:34That's what's worrying me.
04:36What's worrying me is how open we look.
04:38We're just so open. We're not hard working on food.
04:41I can show you that third goal where we have players just crossing the halfway line
04:49as the ball's going in the back of the net.
04:51That isn't my team.
04:53So, yeah, we've got a lot to talk about, a lot of harsh words to go through,
04:59probably Monday morning.
05:01I know, obviously, we don't like looking ahead too much,
05:03but in terms of Tuesday, I suppose that's a chance for some of the players,
05:06again, to show that they perhaps should be, you know, starting in the league.
05:11Yeah, I've not thought about Tuesday night yet.
05:16I may even play that team again after that, to try and put it right.
05:24Yeah, we appreciate it. It's obviously frustrating for them, but a big thanks to the supporters.
05:28They've travelled great numbers.
05:29And, you know, we're working as hard as we can, day by day, to give them the results that they want.
05:34I can't say enough about the supporters.
05:40You know, we're just letting them down, and I can't stand that.
05:45I can't stand that.
05:47I'm not sure what more I can do.
05:52I'm trying so hard to turn it, and sometimes you need a little bit of luck on the way.
06:04You know, I don't know. I've just got to rethink a few things.
06:10You say about luck there. You mentioned the invisible wall last week.
06:15It did seem to be up again again today, didn't it?
06:17It's like Dion with his header that hit the post.
06:19Josh Lindwell's free header. Didn't seem to fall for you again today, did it?
06:24Yeah, I probably should have done something in the week with a priest or something to come in and bless the goal.
06:30I'm being serious. I do feel like people might think I'm bonkers, but I do feel it.
06:35I just feel as if there's some kind of invisible wall there.
06:40Yeah, we created quite a lot of chances again today.
06:48Had we have done our job at the other end of the pitch, though, we'd win the game.
06:51We're not capable of keeping a clean sheet at the moment.
06:54So, I just don't understand the first goal. I don't understand the second goal.
07:04I don't understand all the goals. I don't understand them.
07:06No.
07:07And we talk about it all the time.
07:08And to be fair, like I said, defensively, I think we've faced 82 set pieces in the last games or whatever without conceding a goal.
07:16So, we're kind of patting them on the back with that and say, right, Scott, continue.
07:19Then we just defend like schoolboys today.
07:23Third goal is really disappointing because I see players not running.
07:27They can't play for me.
07:29They cannot play for me if they're not prepared to run when the opposition have the ball.
07:33And there's players crossing the halfway line almost at a jog as the opposition are putting the ball in the net.
07:38They can't and they won't play for me.
07:40So, you know, I need a little bit more than what I'm getting at the moment.
07:45Yeah, you mentioned heart and desire just a minute ago.
07:47How do you change that?
07:48How do you coach that?
07:49Is it something you can change?
07:50Yeah, I think I've got enough in the building.
07:52I've just got to make sure that I put the right players on the pitch.
07:55I think because at the moment, and I think, listen, it's not easy, especially when you're not doing well and the results are against you.
08:05It's difficult to find that edge and that character.
08:10But I'm just, yeah, I'm just miffed by that game.
08:16Yeah.
08:17I just spoke to the chairman this morning and, sorry, last night.
08:26And he's asking me, am I confident?
08:29I'm like, I'm always confident.
08:31I go into every game thinking, yeah, I feel we're going to win.
08:35You know, we do the preparation.
08:36We look at Cambridge.
08:38We work out how we think we can earn them.
08:40And the work goes in on the training pitch.
08:43The detail that we give the players, I think is enough.
08:47Yeah, I'm confident in every game. I really am.
08:54But then we play to a degree in the first half.
08:59We feel, I'm actually, at half time I'm actually happy with the performance.
09:03I'm disappointed with the goal because I think it's a pathetic goal.
09:07It's like schoolboy defending.
09:12But we're still in the game and we come out and then we're just so, just weak at the moment.
09:18Yeah, we've got to find it. We've got to find that character.
09:24Yeah, and just quickly, Harry Forster came by. Was that tactical or was that an injury?
09:28Injury.
09:29Injury.
09:30Yeah, too early to tell.
09:32Yeah, just, I don't know. I don't know at the moment.
09:35Thanks Scott.
