Summer sees many South Australians flock to the beach but this year holiday plans may be distrupted by the devastating algal bloomoff on a third of the state's coast. One area tourists may flock to is the River Murray, which is untouched by the natural disaster. Local tourism operators in the River Murrary are seeing a boost in bookings but hope tourists continue to support coastal businesses.
00:00Sun, sand and salt water are synonymous with a South Australian summer.
00:08But the toxic algal bloom off the state's coast has some beach lovers questioning their holiday plans.
00:14It's not such a pleasant place to be at the present time and so we certainly think about maybe doing some other things.
00:21Adrian Richards usually holidays on the York Peninsula.
00:25This year he's planning to spend his summer along the River Murray, which is untouched by the harmful bloom.
00:31My most recent holiday, in fact we changed plans and spent some time up the river and took the boat up to Morgan and spent a couple of days camping on the nice sandbar on the banks of the mighty Murray.
00:43It was very, very nice.
00:45Mr Richards is not the only one planning a river holiday. Bookings at this caravan park are already up 5% for December.
00:54We've had a couple of phone calls where they've said due to the algae bloom they can't take on their booking where they were meant to be going and are looking for alternate accommodation.
01:02The expected tourism boost is welcome for a region hit by floods three years ago.
01:07Our Riverland communities know all too well what it feels like to have something you can't control come through your region and impact your very livelihoods.
01:18With the flood still fresh in Riverland tourism operator memories, they're sparing a thought for coastal communities.
01:24They're hoping the state government's Coast Is Calling voucher program will bring a boost to bloom affected businesses.
01:30I think there's real ties to community between the river and the coastal communities and people would be there when we need it.
01:38A message of support as the algal bloom lingers.
01:45I'm gonna find no longer because we don't be waiting for an Parent motivo on what's not as it is as theίilus and the city of O Saki قال a few of our tribes.
01:52We hope the name of Spring has moved to the brokerage plan which we find really cool.
01:54We're highlyksi di chuy ì–´ë–» awareness.
01:54I think there was a national twist.
01:56We want to put opportunity to see that people not only need to meet an island.
01:59We're deeply addicted to the river in Japan and fall.
02:02We need to have great friendship.
02:03We're definitely excited for the next couple remar fianc fist countries.
