The tourist season is hitting a peak in the state's southwest, with visitors booking out hotels and crowding popular beaches. As more people visit the region each year, some locals are worried it's becoming too crowded, with the Busselton Jetty flagging it may put a cap on the number of people allowed in tour groups.
00:00Busy days at the Busselton jetty are becoming more common.
00:05A very warm welcome to the iconic Busselton jetty.
00:08Now staff are asking themselves how many visitors are too many.
00:12Over the last 10 years I've been here numbers have gone up about 66% so we need to make sure that we keep the place special.
00:19The team is looking at ways to avoid over-tourism.
00:22I don't think that we would cap walk tickets at this stage but we definitely have to cap underwater observatory and train tickets.
00:28But we might work out a way to sell the tours and do them differently.
00:31Beaches around Dunsborough are also bustling and locals worry the extra people and cars are damaging the environment people come here to enjoy.
00:40It's about working out what the real carrying capacity of the area is and then finding ways to manage and restrict the numbers that come here.
00:51But beach goers are largely unfazed.
00:53I think you've got to expect the tourists, it's a paradise really.
00:57In comparison to Sydney this feels like you know at like 5 or 10% capacity.
01:02While the Busselton council isn't planning an intervention.
01:06We have to understand that tourism brings in 1 billion dollars a year just to this area.
01:12So if for example if you were in Mount Isa and you closed down a copper mine that would devastate the community.
01:18So we have to embrace tourism.
01:20At beaches here in Eagle Bay and places like Denmark and Margaret River the advice from Parks and Wildlife officers is if you can't find a parking bay stay away.
01:29So let's go ahead and see you.
01:30In the near future if you're in the near future if you have a full report on youruman park stay away.
01:39That's all for your life.
01:40If you're in the near future, thank you so much for your journey.
01:42Thank you so much for being with me.
01:43Thank you for having me and.
01:44You are connected with this.
01:45And if you're in the near future, I'll have to come right over.
01:48And let's try and let's do this where you're at.
01:49And if you're in the near future you're at the near future, you're at the near future you're at the near future.
01:52And let's try and let's take off your house.
01:53That's what I'm trying to do, and give you back a day away.
