00:00...Bulgaria, NATO will have new attack routes,
00:03which will make it harder for Yugoslavia to shoot down its planes.
00:07Pentagon sources say the two U.S. planes lost over Yugoslavia so far,
00:12an F-117 and F-16, were both hit by surface-to-air missile fragments,
00:18and some military officials believe the planes may have been flying in too predictable a pattern.
00:2349 days into Operation Allied Force,
00:26more than half of Yugoslavia's most modern surface-to-air missiles have been put out of operation.
00:32But still, there is a deadly danger zone below about 10,000 feet.
00:37We could lose a pilot a day or a plane a day if we were to simply go down lower and lower.
00:42They're waiting for that.
00:43I've always felt that you don't fight on the enemy's terms, you fight on your terms.
00:47NATO says its attacks must be stepped up because, despite Yugoslav claims,
00:51Serb forces are not withdrawing from Kosovo.
00:54At this camp alone, the KLA claims 1,000 men are getting basic training before being sent to the front.
01:06These young men sign out rifles for the very first time,
01:11quickly learning how to handle them before moving on to live fire exercises.
01:16It's a steep learning curve, just a month before they must be ready for real combat.
01:24Yeah, we have very good training here, so we do things in a month that others perhaps do it within a year or so.
01:31Victor came from New York.
01:33Young and old, all these recruits have left homes and jobs all over the United States and Europe.
01:39All of them say the more they hear reports of Serb forces killing Albanians in Kosovo, the more they want to fight.
01:47If we don't fight against those bees, the killing our elders and youngsters and raping our women and stuff like that,
01:58I think we cannot live proud.
02:00This platoon is practicing a hillside ambush, but as they go through their paces, they know time is not on their side.
02:08Despite 50 days of NATO bombing, Serb forces continue to ethnically cleanse Kosovo.
02:14Since NATO has all but ruled out a ground force to fight the Serbs out of Kosovo,
02:21the KLA says it's willing to do that job,
02:24and many analysts are now saying it's time to properly arm the KLA to use them as NATO's proxy on the ground.
02:32The KLA knows the terrain and have been fighting Serb forces for more than a year in Kosovo,
02:38and many are veterans of the Bosnian and Croat wars.
02:41But right now, they are mostly on the defensive.
02:44With things like anti-tank weapons and artillery, they say they could increase their offensive operations.
02:52The Serbs are technically superior, but their morale is low.
02:56When we directly engage them, they run or desert.
02:59They mostly fight us from a distance.
03:01What they do is assault villages that are completely defenseless.
03:05The KLA says it captures or buys most of these guns and mortars from deserting Serb soldiers.
03:13But with too little hardware, their best assets right now are their increasing numbers and their fighting spirit.
03:23Christiana Amanpour, CNN, in the Balkans.
03:26NATO says it just had its most successful day of the campaign, flying a record 327 strike sorties.
03:35The alliance claimed Serb forces had launched heavy attacks on Kosovo Liberation Army guerrillas at the start of the week,
03:42Contradicting the Yugoslav military's claim its operations against the armed separatists were over,
03:49and that a partial withdrawal of troops and armed special police was underway.
03:55NATO says the strikes are pinning down, cutting off, and taking out Serbian forces.
04:00But the military action against infrastructure is also making it difficult for a United Nations humanitarian mission to get...
04:07Serbian television shows anti-aircraft guns on the move, preparing for another night of combat with NATO planes.
04:15A battle in which Yugoslavia's army and its people lose more each day.
04:20A television relay station, attacked and destroyed.
04:24Road and rail links take another pounding, further isolating Serbia from the outside world.
04:30And first time confirmation from the leadership here, that despite upbeat displays like this reception for police commanders,
04:3850 days of bombing have inflicted casualties among their...
04:42See NATO war planes in the skies above, on their way to bomb the Serbs across the border.
04:47But every day the refugees also wonder, when the war being waged on their behalf and in their name, will finally be won.
04:55Ben Brown, BBC News, Northern Albania.
04:58The illusion of Top Gun-style glamour boys waiting to go to war.
05:02Life for an Apache pilot in Albania is often mundane.
05:07The day begins for Matt in the muddy tent city, which is headquarters for Task Force Hawk.
05:15At the back of his mind is the fact that two of his colleagues have already died on this mission,
05:20and two Apaches have crashed without a shot being fired in anger.
05:24It's just a very dangerous thing, and we don't really ever forget that it's a dangerous business,
05:31no matter whether or not you're doing training or regular operations, it's still dangerous.
05:36But the training and planning goes on.
05:39In readiness for the time, NATO chiefs give the go-ahead for the Apaches to go in for real.
05:45I feel every pilot is anxious prior to a mission and wondering about when we're going to get the call to go.
05:55I think it's been a few days, and we've found that amongst your NATO troops there's a very high feeling of morale.
06:03How do you judge the spirit?
06:04Well, I've been in the British Army for rather longer than I care to admit.
06:10But my own view, not only of the British forces you've seen, but the multinational force as a whole.
06:16And remember, I'm a NATO commander.
06:18Yeah, it's good.
06:19People are here.
06:20They've got a job to do.
06:21They want to get on with it.
06:23The waiting game is a bite.
06:26But don't forget also, we've been heavily involved in humanitarian operations over the last, what, five weeks, I think it is now.
06:33Which is, again, given the soldiers a real focus.
06:36Two days after an announced withdrawal of Yugoslav forces from Kosovo,
06:41a small number of soldiers appeared on the move, heading out of the embattled province.
06:46It's claimed by the authorities here as part of an overall plan to reduce army and police levels.
06:52A fraction of their military equipment and personnel, stationed in Kosovo, was packed up.
06:58Hardly enough to impress NATO, but it may be a star.
07:01A weapon in NATO's arsenal, but it's not just a weapon system.
07:05With me here is Sergeant Graham Jessup from Basingstoke in Hampshire.
07:09And this is Graham's tank.
07:11And this is his home, of course, and has been for 11 weeks.
07:14Well, yeah, welcome to the call sign 2-1.
07:16This is where I live as commander.
07:18The remainder of the crew sleeping and living on the back decks.
07:21And you've got a kitchen?
07:21Yeah, this is our kitchen for cups of tea, coffee, and for washing in the mornings.
07:25So, all more cons.
07:26Now, we're going to go up for K now and try and get into the working part of this tank.
07:30It's a bit of a climb.
07:32We're going to try not to step on John Ashton, the driver from Oldham in Lancashire.
07:37Hello, John.
07:38Hello.
07:39We're going to climb over to the top.
07:41I'm going to go up into the commander's position now, at the top of the tank, and into the turret.
07:48It's a bit of a squeeze, I have to say, Kay.
07:52It's not exactly built for comfort.
07:55But, Graham, how many people actually can live inside this tank here?
07:58Well, inside the turret, we have a crew of three.
08:00The commander stays from where you are.
08:03Operator stands here, and down in between your legs will be the gunner.
08:05And you've got a number of guns here.
08:07Tell us about this one.
08:09This is the commander's machine gun, used in anti-aircraft defense, coupled with the co-action
08:14machine gun mounted next to the main armament.
08:16And the main armament is a big gun, isn't it?
08:17Yeah, 120 millimeters of raw power.
08:20So, what can you kill with that?
08:22Any Serb tank that comes along?
08:24Absolutely.
08:24Very confident in the piece of equipment we've got.
08:26And in terms of this tank, it's the most powerful tank that's in the NATO armory here in Macedonia.
08:32Just how fast can you go?
08:33Well, depending on the terrain, around about sort of 20 miles an hour.
08:37Okay, this really is an amazing piece of equipment.
08:39There are 26 of these Challenger tanks here in Macedonia.
08:43And we're here with King's Royal Hussars and also with the Irish Guards who have created this battle group.
08:49And they're ready to go at any time.
08:50It must be very...
08:51Mark Austin reports.
08:57It is a war spreading across Yugoslavia's borders.
09:00These are Albanian fighters in a gun battle with Serb soldiers inside Albania.
09:07For the second time in five weeks, a small unit of Yugoslav soldiers have captured and occupied this Albanian village
09:14in an attempt to cut supply lines to the KLA.
09:17These men are civilians, villagers, joining Albanian border police, trying to defend their land and their homes.
09:25The Serbs are in our village, he says.
09:31We're civilians, defending our land, adds this man.
09:36The British cameraman who filmed this fighting said it went on through the evening and at least three villagers were killed.
09:43European monitors today confirmed the Serb incursion on Tuesday of this week and said they held the village for 24 hours.
09:50This whole area is a stronghold of the KLA and clearly it throws into question President Milosevic's earlier claim
09:58that all operations against the Kosovo rebels had ended.
10:02The Serbs withdrew when Albanian troops became involved, but they fear the Serbs mined the village before they left.
10:09It's KLA bases like this one, just inside Kosovo, that the Serbs are determined to cut off.
10:18And the rebels are clearly suffering casualties from what may prove to be a final Serb push before a withdrawal.
10:26But NATO jets have Serb frontier positions in their sights.
10:30All the while, NATO is intensifying its bombing in this border area.
10:37Several times today, bombing runs by NATO jets against Serb positions just on the hills here.
10:44The targets are believed to be Serb artillery sites.
10:49Throughout the day, the bombers swoop down on the positions just a few kilometers from the border.
10:54Its Serb artillery aid agencies fear could threaten...
10:58They are still finding the odds stacked against them.
11:02The NATO air campaign has done little to degrade or disable the fighting ability
11:06of the Yugoslav army units and Serbian interior ministry forces facing them on the ground in Kosovo.
11:13Although it's estimated there are only 4,000 of them left inside the province,
11:17they're still putting up a fight.
11:19Tenaciously holding out in small pockets throughout Kosovo.
11:22In some cases, they've retaken ground from the Serbs.
11:27That ground has been captured in the last week in an attack launched by the KLA
11:32from their base in the village of Papai in northern Albania,
11:35across the mountainous border with Kosovo,
11:37taking the Serbian strongpoint of Koshare and destroying a barracks.
11:42Spearheaded by special forces called the Delta Unit,
11:45they're now pushing towards the town of Unik.
11:48But they're encountering stiff resistance from elements of the 3rd Yugoslav army.
11:53Dug in and backed by tanks and artillery,
11:55the Serbs are managing to inflict serious casualties.
11:59KLA guerrillas in the northeast of Kosovo have been surrounded by Serb forces for weeks now
12:04and could be wiped out completely unless reinforcements and fresh supplies of ammunition reach them.
12:09The KLA forces, they do fight with a very good bravery
12:17and they did destroy a lot of enemy forces.
12:23Despite claims by Belgrade the Yugoslav army is pulling troops out of Kosovo,
12:28the evidence on the ground is they're mounting an all-out assault to finish off the KLA.
12:33Nature is talking about when, not if, the tanks will roll into Kosovo.
12:39They know they have just one job to do.
12:42We all want to get on and do it.
12:44And in particular, we want to see these refugees out of the camps and into their homes
12:48with our help and with the confidence which security in Kosovo,
12:53provided by a proper force, will give them.
12:56That security comes from the presence of professional soldiers.
13:01Sky News was taken to a forward location near the border with Kosovo,
13:05home to the King's Royal Hussars.
13:07These men know when the call to action comes,
13:10they will be among the first across the border into Kosovo.
13:14Before then, though, their tanks are more than just a fighting machine.
13:17When the vehicle is at home,
13:19live, eat and breathe on it, we can cook on it.
13:22As you've seen, a driver sleeps on the back decks.
13:24And we were up until a couple of, about a week ago,
13:27all sleeping on the back decks, off the ground.
13:30And that is our home. It's our life.
13:34And this is Challenger.
13:36It's more than a match for the opposition.
13:38It can fire a shell four kilometres,
13:40destroy any known Serb tank.
13:43There's nothing in Kosovo to challenge it.
13:45While we're waiting here,
13:47they're improving their defences all the time.
13:49However, we know that we're a much better prepared,
13:52much better equipped army.
13:53Our morale is much better.
13:55And so, we feel very confident.
13:58So the waiting game continues.
14:00For the troops, a most frustrating time.
14:03Whatever the politicians decide,
14:05the King's Royal Hussars are ready.
14:07Paul Beaver, Sky News.
14:09Last bit of practice in preparation for their mission in Albania,
14:12where they're due to protect NATO headquarters.
14:15Our troops have been training in the NATO countries since 1993.
14:19We took part in exercises with the mountain forces in Mittenwald in Germany,
14:23and we were in France too.
14:25We've done everything possible to prepare the soldiers for combat duty.
14:28The Podhala Rifle Corps are also mountain troops,
14:34and they look back on a long and proud tradition.
14:37Their dress uniforms incorporate elements from the traditional costume of the high Tatra mountains.
14:42We're just proud that it's the soldiers of the 21st Brigade
14:50who are the first to be sent on a mission abroad.
14:53In this troubled spot, we want to do our small part to secure world peace.
15:06Their main job is to protect NATO headquarters,
15:09but they're also earmarked for humanitarian duties
15:12like guarding refugee camps and escorting convoys.
15:15Albania is not the first mission for the Podhala Rifle Brigade.
15:18They've already taken part in peacekeeping forces in Lebanon and Bosnia,
15:23but those were under the banner of the United Nations.
15:31This time, they're acting as NATO troops.
15:33As a new member, Poland is keen to prove its NATO credentials.
15:38The sincerity of the pullout, the air raids go on.
15:41For a second time, an already wrecked state TV studios at Novi Sad in the north
15:45came under attack, incendiary munitions ensuring it could not be brought back into service.
15:51The ongoing...
15:51...targeted military vehicles, artillery and troops on the ground.
15:55The NATO bombing of power stations blacked out Yugoslavia's three biggest cities.
16:00But despite the claims of NATO, the Yugoslav defence minister
16:03says the airstrikes have not inflicted any serious losses on the Yugoslav army.
16:08These pictures, filmed by a Western cameraman under conditions imposed by Serb officials,
16:16shows heavily armed Yugoslav army units still patrolling the Kosovo-Serbia border.
16:22One Yugoslav army officer said his soldiers were ready and determined to fight anyone
16:26who tries to come to their fatherland.
16:29It's an unusual flight plan for this German Air Force Boeing 707.
16:42Take-off is Wednesday morning, 10am.
16:46Its course takes it over southern Italy in a wide curve en route to Tirana, Albania.
16:52The cargo is 28 tonnes of humanitarian aid.
16:55Not many passengers are on board.
16:59There's just enough room in the cargo plane for a few journalists and interpreters.
17:05The primary focus of this mission is the payload behind them.
17:10Tents and equipment urgently needed on the ground in Tirana
17:14and at refugee camps in northern Albania.
17:18Pumps and filters for drinking water, aid workers tell us,
17:22are some of the most important items.
17:25Each one of us in the crew definitely wants to do this.
17:30In Cologne, we're a 25-man team working full-time.
17:33We get the cargo together and pack it up.
17:35We organize it as well and get it ready to load.
17:38Morale is high and everybody wants to be involved.
17:42When you see on the ground with your own eyes the things you see on television,
17:45what's really going on here,
17:46then you just have to be ready and willing to do it.
17:49We certainly are, that's for sure.
17:51After three hours in the air, the plane touches down in Tirana.
18:05The Americans are here with special equipment.
18:09As NATO's leading power,
18:10they've officially taken over command of the airport.
18:14With low altitude,
18:16French cargo helicopters set down
18:18to pick up some of the supplies from Germany.
18:21Luckily, there's enough kerosene today.
18:25Yesterday, aid operations stalled at 3.30pm.
18:29The day's fuel rations have been used up.
18:31Three helicopters from the French aid organisation Armee de Terre
18:54take off for northern Albania.
18:56The low altitude flight takes just under an hour.
19:01This isn't the first time Dana Rimac has made this trip.
19:06Since the evacuations began,
19:08she's been on duty here, non-stop.
19:14Flying over the region near Krumah,
19:17the aid workers cite a new group of refugees on the ground.
19:21They do some quick mental rescheduling.
19:23A short time later,
19:32they land at the refugee camp near Kukas.
19:35Here, the Italian army has been mounting a huge effort.
19:39Serbian air defence activity was moderate.
19:43You observed six surface-to-air missiles.
19:45There you see the village of Bela Kufca.
19:53I was jumping ahead.
19:55There you see, first of all, on the left, buildings intact.
20:00And there, on the right, buildings damaged.
20:03Again, no blast damage.
20:07These houses have clearly been set on fire.
20:11This is arson, and it's not bombing.
20:15Nice, smart, suburban-style villas there.
20:18But now, look what's happened to them
20:23as a result, again, of arson attacks.
20:27Again, the photograph of the situation
20:30before Serb forces came visiting,
20:33and that's the situation afterwards.
20:36You can see clearly the interior walls
20:38on those photographs,
20:40and that shows the methods
20:42that the Serb forces are using.
20:45At the beginning, they used to use petrol
20:48which they used to doubt
20:50of a campsite of internally displaced persons
20:53inside Kosovo.
20:56We know that thousands of these
20:58internally displaced persons
20:59are currently, as you can see,
21:01in the valets, on the hills, in the woods,
21:04having been forced from their homes
21:06because of many vehicles, cars,
21:09of internally displaced persons
21:12spread out across a field
21:13as they tried, presumably,
21:16to escape from their attackers.
21:17that have either been shelled
21:19or they've been deliberately shot at
21:21and destroyed and having been set on fire.
21:24Campaign and NATO says it's carried out
21:26its most intensive air raids
21:28over any 24-hour period.
21:31It's targeted military vehicles,
21:33troops, and power stations,
21:35leaving Yugoslavia's three biggest cities
21:37blacked out.
21:37This shows the position
21:39of the first attack in Kosovo.
21:41clip, please.
21:45Just to orientate you on the film,
21:47we've actually frozen the film there.
21:49You can see the outline
21:51of the underground storage facility there.
21:53The second aircraft,
21:54this is filmed from his cockpit,
21:56he's actually annotating the target
21:59just there.
22:00When the film unfreezes,
22:02you will see the first Harrier aircraft
22:04launch his weapons
22:06on the target
22:07to the west of the compound.
22:16The film is now unfrozen.
22:18Watch carefully to the left
22:19in this area here.
22:21There's the impact.
22:25And note that
22:25is the secondary explosion
22:27indicating the underground storage tranks
22:29were full at the time.
22:31The film is now unfrozen.
22:32We're back to the second Harrier aircraft
22:35marking the target.
22:37As he gets close to the target,
22:39the image starts to rotate.
22:42You can still just about see
22:43the fire up in the top
22:44still raging from the first attack.
22:51There's the bomb impact.
22:54And there is the secondary explosion.
22:58Slide, please.
22:58Okay, southern part of Serbia.
23:02This is the tornado attack
23:03on the rail bridge.
23:06Clip, please.
23:11Just to orientate you here.
23:14That is the road.
23:15We've got part of the road
23:16coming down here.
23:17That is the rail line
23:19going across there.
23:20You can just see the river
23:21up there.
23:23The actual mark
23:24is on the far end of the bridge.
23:26Slightly clearer now.
23:27You can see the railway line.
23:28still in a frozen picture.
23:30We're now moving into the attack.
23:31Getting fairly close.
23:33Marking the centre of the bridge.
23:35I'm just waiting for the bombs
23:37to impact.
23:42There is impact now.
23:45Okay.
23:46Slide, please.
23:49Okay, this is the first
23:50still photography
23:51of the petrol
23:53nor lubrication
23:55storage facility.
23:56You can see
23:57in the foreground here
23:58the two tanks
23:59have been completely
24:00destroyed
24:01and damaged
24:02the buildings
24:03just up there.
24:06Slide, please.
24:09Okay, we've got
24:10two slides now
24:11of a before and after shot.
24:12This shows the bridge
24:14undamaged here.
24:15You can see the bridge
24:16going across the ground here
24:18then spanning the river
24:19going off into the left.
24:21Slide, please.
24:22This is that same photograph.
24:25You can see now
24:26a lot of damage here.
24:28The complete span
24:28of the bridge
24:29has been taken out there.
24:31And if you can just look,
24:33that is actually a crater
24:34that has breached
24:35the side of the riverbank
24:36and...
24:37...continue to degrade
24:38and disrupt
24:39the Serbian ground forces
24:40in Kosovo
24:41against the bases
24:43of Serbian ground forces.
24:46This was, by the way,
24:47the support base
24:48at Krivovo.
24:50Our strategic targets
24:52include
24:52strikes against
24:54command and control
24:55facilities at Novi Sad,
24:57Kosjeric
24:58and Novi Bazar,
25:00idle resupply routes
25:01for the Serbian ground forces.
25:04This image
25:04shows the damage
25:05to the Popovac bridge
25:07north of Kosovo.
25:12...in Kosovo.
25:13Millions of leaflets
25:14showing photos
25:15of Apache helicopters
