00:03He's going out, SATCOM FASC monitor
00:06It's been called the video game conflict
00:09but this is no PlayStation as airborne RAF controllers
00:12intently gaze at screens that will give the Allies
00:15first warning of any counter-attack from Yugoslavia's airfields
00:19When you looked over here and you saw the raids
00:22well sorry, when you look to the northeast and you see the raids coming in
00:25it was kind of difficult not to imagine what was going on the ground
00:29but you've got to come away from that and just carry on doing the job
00:32you've been trained for
00:34Easily distinguished by its rotating radar
00:37the AWACS is built around airliner design older than most of the crew
00:41but the 150 million pound flying Sentinel
00:45is packed with such top secret surveillance systems
00:48we can only show them in these pictures cleared by the military
00:52the atmosphere in the windowless cabin is calm
00:55but the watchers are alert should anyone try to locate them
00:59obviously an airborne threat, a fast airborne threat would be our biggest problem
01:04because although we are a jet obviously
01:07the overtake on a fast jet is quite considerable
01:10so he could hunt us down very very quickly unless we're on the ball
01:13these arrays are so powerful
01:16one AWACS cruising over Birmingham could detect any aircraft between Lands End and John O'Groats
01:22the seven British planes which share the patrol duty around the clock carry no weapons
01:27and often have to take evasive action as they detect bogies, potentially hostile aircraft heading their way
01:34we have fighters on combat air patrols
01:37and they're positioned procedurally between our aircraft and the fighter threat
01:42so they've got to get through that first layer of defence before they threaten the E3
01:47it's still the most hazardous combat zone they've ever flown in
01:51so far NATO's superior fire powers deterred enemy attack
01:55the crew of callsign Magic 8-0 have come to rely on the electronic wizardry at their fingertips to keep them safe
02:02despite the fatiguing intensity of the work
02:06the men and women of 23 and 8 squadrons know they can take some satisfaction
02:11in having flown the maximum number of missions with minimum setback
02:15but similarly the potential to resist of the Yugoslav Air Force remains untested
02:20so they know they can't slacken their vigilance
02:23for Slobodan Milosevic would surely risk some of his precious MiG-29s to bring down one of these
02:29the ears and eyes of NATO's air offensive
02:32Jeff Meade Sky News at 30,000 feet above the Balkans
02:36civilian buildings
02:38on the roads it would be attacked
02:40this is the remains of an armoured convoy found by RAF Harriers
02:44cockpit video shows an armoured vehicle being blown up
02:49and another attack on an ammunition dump
02:52with the bombs coming from the top right-hand corner
02:56and laser-guided bombs
03:02the Roosevelt has arrived at short notice
03:05a result of the galloping pace of events in Kosovo
03:08and the problems with bad weather for some of the NATO aircraft
03:11her captain exudes confidence
03:14yesterday our first strikes doing exactly as the Air Force and the other allied forces have been doing
03:21we joined right into the forces as if we'd been here for months
03:25all night the deck was a macabre black dance floor
03:29on which over a hundred people loaded, checked, directed and launched the aircraft
03:34seemingly indifferent to why they're involved in this dangerous venture
03:37just doing the job
03:40after the F-18s the F-14s strained on the catapult
03:44and screamed off from east of Sicily to Kosovo
03:49and this morning more bombs and missiles
03:52to replace those delivered apparently successfully last night
03:57whether all of this and more of this
04:00will have an effect on the future of the people of Kosovo
04:03is a question which doesn't have an answer at the moment
04:06however, NATO's military resolve appears to be holding
04:09whatever the political or humanitarian dilemmas
04:12Kate Aidy, BBC News, on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt
04:17dangerous the war can be for American pilots
04:20as an F-16 dodges two surface-to-air missiles fired by the Serbs
04:24but after two weeks and hundreds of bombing runs
04:27NATO warplanes still can't find and hit Serb forces dug deep into Kosovo
04:32at this rate, says one U.S. military official
04:35the war could last months
04:37today
04:40several in southeastern Kosovo
04:42shown here in satellite enhanced video obtained by Moneyline
04:45NATO said the Serb army was running low on fuel and hiding out
04:49the red circles mark Serb tanks hidden in the rubble of bombed out buildings
04:53NATO said these armored vehicles in Kosovo were out in the open and were hit
04:58NATO was also tracking
05:00is systematically rounding up refugees near the border
05:04and driving them back into Kosovo
05:07Serb television claimed those refugees were simply returning to a peaceful Kosovo
05:12but along the border, CNN witnessed scenes like this one
05:15Serb soldiers laying landmines
05:18for many months
05:19the Serb armed forces were mining the border with Albania to stop people going in
05:27perhaps overwhelmed by the welcome or tired from the hurried swing through Europe
05:31Secretary Cohen veered verbally off target
05:34we've got a major humanitarian catastrophe that we have to face by virtue of
05:39Slovan Madovich
05:42I'm even stumbling on his name now because I'm so adverse to pronouncing it
05:46Later, Capitol Hill met the front lines in a mutual morale boost
05:51We've actually done this seven or eight times since last August or so
05:56spinning up and getting ready for it
05:58and now we're finally doing it so the gang's all happy
06:00Well, you're saving a lot of lives
06:02That's the good part
06:03It's a job, it's a stressful job, but it really matters
06:07It's a lot of people
06:08And the same for you too in terms of a stressful job, but it's very important
06:10Even senators like this need to hear that every now and then
06:14You're great, you've got a great attitude
06:16Well, thank you very much
06:17Good luck, I wish you well
06:18Thank you
06:19Other thoughts were on the three captured U.S. soldiers
06:22I think it puts a little bit into everybody's spirit
06:25I want to fight a little bit harder now that those guys are kind of behind the lines, you know
06:29Everybody's kind of worried about them and really pulling for them
06:32But the U.S. defense secretary warned there would be no deals over the terms of any release
06:36No ceasefires, he's to release them and to return them safely to the United States
06:41We're holding him personally accountable for their safety
06:44If the three Army Rangers are released, there's a good chance they'll pass through here
06:48The massive Rammstein Air Base
06:50Plus their permanent unit, the 1st Infantry Division, is located nearby in WĂŒrzburg
06:55Richard Roth, CNN, Rammstein, Germany
06:58On the aircraft carrier, they got down to deadly business as darkness fell
07:05The U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt's presence both adds to the firepower available to NATO
07:11And makes a statement to Yugoslavia about piling on the pressure
07:15She's a parade of aggression and efficiency
07:21The military's answer to a complex situation
07:24However, as night fell, she was already part of the biggest raid so far
07:30The first wave of F-18s catapulting away
07:34Newly stocked with a massive arsenal of missiles and laser-guided bombs
07:40The Roosevelt has arrived at short notice
07:43A result of the galloping pace of events in Kosovo
07:46And the problems with bad weather for some of the NATO aircraft
07:49Her captain exudes confidence
07:52Yesterday, our first strikes
07:55Doing exactly as the Air Force and the other Allied forces have been doing
07:59We joined right into the forces as if we'd been here for months
08:03All night, the deck was a macabre black dance floor
08:07On which over a hundred people loaded, checked, directed and launched the aircraft
08:12Seemingly indifferent to why they're involved in this dangerous venture
08:15Just doing the job
08:17After the F-18s, the F-14s strained on the catapult
08:22And screamed off from east of Sicily to Kosovo
08:27And this morning, more bombs and missiles
08:30To replace those delivered apparently successfully last night
08:35Whether all of this and more of this
08:37Will have an effect on the future of the people of Kosovo
08:40Is a question which doesn't have an answer at the moment
08:43However, NATO's military resolve appears to be holding
08:46Whatever the political or humanitarian dilemmas
08:50Kate Ady, BBC News, on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt
08:54This infrared targeting system, two black dots
08:58Those are lethal surface-to-air missiles, SA-3s
09:02That miss because their guidance radars are either being jammed
09:05Or are turned off to avoid attracting radar-seeking missiles
09:09Or
09:10Yes, I can confirm that I am definitely prepared to leave
09:16This commander wants to take his troops
09:18Or at the very least, volunteers to fight in Yugoslavia
09:22The Russian government has not taken him up on his offer
09:26The seven-ton carrier made a hasty trip to the Adriatic Sea to join the fight
09:36The second day of launches from the U.S. carrier Theodore Roosevelt
09:39A relative latecomer to the conflict in Yugoslavia
09:44The ship's commanders learning only last weekend an officer said
09:47They were to take part as head of a battle group of ten other vessels
09:52Not that, Captain David Bryant said, two weeks out of port in Norfolk, Virginia
09:57They weren't ready
09:58This is just heated up here, we were preparing
10:00Our aircrew, of course, as the ship are all very well prepared
10:04Any time to go in to respond to any crisis
10:07On a day that would see a series of three missions into the middle of the night
10:14Everyone on board aware now of a new place, Kosovo
10:18An officer on the Roosevelt asked how many of the more than 5,500 on board
10:23Had heard of Kosovo just a few weeks ago
10:26Said, well, probably all the pilots
10:28But probably less than 20% of the rest of the crew
10:32The flow of bombs from the hangar deck to the flight deck, though
10:37Reinforcing that the conflict over Kosovo was for real
10:41We're bringing up so much stuff
10:42I keep track of it all
10:43I see it when it goes up
10:45When it comes back, I'm out there to see if the bird comes back with it
10:47And if it doesn't
10:49I don't know, a few thoughts crossed my mind
10:51As the four-and-a-half acres and 97,000 tons of the USS Roosevelt
10:58For the first time since the Gulf War went into combat
11:02Bill Delaney, CNN, aboard the USS Roosevelt
11:09Juma's way of expressing its disapproval of NATO's campaign
11:14And is being seen by analysts as a political gesture rather than a military threat
11:19More Allied forces are being sent to the Balkans to help with the refugee crisis
11:24Including 1,500 British troops
11:27Despite their peacekeeping role
11:29There's speculation they could eventually be used in a ground offensive against Serb forces in Kosovo
11:35NATO's campaign continues to intensify
11:39Last night, the sky over central Serbia was lit up by thousands of gallons of burning petrol
11:45NATO missiles have scored direct hits on several fuel depots
11:50Its strategy of targeting such supplies is aimed at weakening Milosevic's forces by reducing their mobility
11:57His units in the field are now running low on the fuel they need
12:02A tank with no fuel is a sitting target
12:05But NATO has dismissed speculation that it's aiming to curb propaganda from Belgrade
12:10By putting Yugoslav state television out of action
12:14We're not going to target specifically Serb TV
12:18It's not necessarily our favourite television obviously
12:22But we're not going to target it
12:23What we have said is that where the Serb TV transmitters are integrated
12:28As many of them are into military radio relay stations
12:32Then they will be a legitimate target
12:34The United States is still awaiting word from Belgrade
12:38On whether President Milosevic will agree to release three captured US soldiers
12:43During an expected meeting with Cypriot envoy Speros Kiprianu
12:47Washington is adamant there should be no conditions attached to their release
12:52...areas within Kosovo
12:55And each particular engagement area depicts an action
12:59It doesn't actually number the vehicles that we approached
13:05On Thursday we were able to locate this SA-6 site
13:09Which we subsequently attacked and destroyed
13:19And here is the resume of Thursday's activities
13:23It was a better day for us and we struck much heavier armoured units in our operations
13:33Other Serbian air defence activity was in line with that scene over the past few days
13:39SAM activity was fairly light
13:41But we saw an increase in emissions from tactical SAMs
13:44And one man portable SAM was launched against our aircraft without success
13:51One Serbian aircraft got airborne for a short period of time
13:55But recovered without engagement
13:57There was also minor Serbian helicopter activity
14:01All of our aircraft returned safely to their bases
14:11And this one after
14:13Imagery analysis pointed to two excellent attacks
14:21As planned with little or no collateral damage
14:25Next we have also targeted the petroleum facility on the fringe of the city
14:33Here is the pre-strike imagery
14:35And what I'm going to show you is an attack, a video of one of our attacks
14:55This shows you the post-strike
14:57I'm sorry, I'm just getting a nod from the top there
15:05I can't show you the video
15:07I do apologise
15:09We also attacked the garrison annotated
15:11And here is our pre-attack image
15:17You will see it's a large complex
15:19And we have attacked it several times
15:21And this time I'm sure I'm going to be able to show you a video of one of our attacks
15:51Finally, we attacked the main telephone exchange
15:55This was a key target
15:57That was being used to provide communications
15:59Between the fielded Serbian forces
16:01Within Kosovo and Belgrade
16:03Although three of our bombs hit the target
16:05Despite our very best efforts
16:07It appears that on this attack
16:09One bomb may have caused some collateral damage
16:13This image shows the telephone exchange before the attack
16:17And this image shows the post-attack damage
16:27You will see in the rectangle to the north of the target
16:35An area which we have marked which is possible collateral damage
16:39Some two to three hundred metres from the target
16:41I also have some video of one of our successful attacks
16:45And I'm going to show you on the next freeze frame
17:01Where the collateral damage was in relation to the target
17:11The mission report stated that one bomb
17:13Appeared to be seduced off the target at the final stages
17:17Close inspection of imagery indicates that it landed
17:19Some two to three hundred metres away
17:21In what seems to be a small residential area
17:25Even though there were only five major target areas last night
17:29Not including the engagement zone
17:31And once again I'll remind the engagement zone
17:33May have dozens of targets in it
17:35Of the ability to hit maybe in a target area
17:39If a target has, as I explained earlier
17:41Could have a weapon, it may require one weapon
17:43It may require several weapons
17:45Or it may have several areas in that target that are hit
17:47What I'd like to show you now is some film from a B-2
17:49The B-2s that flew last night carry sixteen GPS bombs
17:53And those bombs can either hit a single target
17:57Or several targets spread out over an area
18:01On here you'll see a target area in the Nellis range area
18:07It's hard to see on here
18:09Where sixteen different targets were hit by one B-2
18:11Spread out over an area that was fairly large
18:15Only small here because of the filming of it
18:17Each one of those targets was directly hit
18:19From a significant standoff distance
18:21From a significant standoff distance
18:23And what I'd like to point out here is
18:25Each B-2 carries sixteen precision guided munitions
18:29GPS, two thousand pound bombs
18:31And they can either be hit on the same target
18:33Or on individual targets spread out over many, many miles
18:37What were those targets?
18:39These on this particular film were armored vehicles and bunkers
18:43But last night there were a spread of the different targets I mentioned
18:47Last night moving targets?
18:51No they were stationary targets last night
18:53Let them narrate this
18:55Okay next I'm going to show you some film from the last couple days
18:59This is an armored barracks area in Nice struck by F-16s
19:03That were totally destroyed
19:07The next film here is once again
19:09It's the same area that was just destroyed
19:13As the aircraft departs the area
19:15The next film will be on a bridge
19:17The next film will be on a bridge
19:19With an F-15E
19:21With a television guided AGM-130 bomb
19:25The Boni Polanka bridge
19:27And you'll see as he's driving in
19:29He's guiding the bomb
19:31And he'll be going for one of the main structures
19:33Stanchions on the bridge
19:35To take that bridge down
19:37And in fact this bomb did take that stanchion down
19:39And take the bridge down in the river
19:41This was two nights ago
19:43Where?
19:45Banya Polanka
19:47Danube
19:51That's right it was the Danube river
19:53As you can see he's guiding the weapon into the area
19:57That would most do the most damage
19:59And that was taken down
20:01The next film will be of a
20:03You can run it please
20:05Is the Novi Saad communication site
20:09Once again
20:11This is a F-16
20:13Against this communication site here
20:15That's both for command and control
20:17And for integrated air defense
20:19This is a 2,000 pound laser guided bomb
20:23The bomb will be coming in from the right
20:25With a direct hit and destroys the communications site
20:29Once again
20:33Although the film looks a little dark here
20:35In the cockpit it's very clear
20:37And this is a night shot
20:39So from the cockpit it looks like day
20:41The next film will be
20:45Next run it please
20:51This is also a communication relay site
20:55And on this one I'll stop the film
20:57And on this one I'll stop the film
20:59And you'll actually see the bomb coming into the target areas
21:01You can see the laser is through the cursor here
21:03Directly over the target
21:052,000 pound bomb from an F-16
21:07You'll see it coming in here
21:09And it's a direct hit and destroys the target
21:13What was the target?
21:15That was a communications relay site
21:17What day?
21:19I think that was two days ago
21:21I'll check for you
21:23You can see
21:25But there are several bunkers in this area
21:27It's a ammo storage area near Pristina
21:29This is in Kosovo
21:31And each one of these bunkers
21:33This is a single target area
21:35It's called one target
21:36But each one of these points here
21:37Is called design mean point of impact
21:39That we will show you here in just a moment
21:41The destruction on that
21:43And as you can see here
21:45These buildings are being taken out individually
21:47And so when you hear that there were 22 or 30 targets
21:52That doesn't necessarily mean 22 or 30 bombs
21:55It may be several bombs on a particular target area
21:57And that was successful
22:03Again Russia has bared its teeth momentarily
22:05Perhaps testing NATO's resolve
22:07More likely playing to a home audience
22:09These warships will leave for the Mediterranean on Monday
22:13On Monday
22:14In preparation for the trip
22:15The cameras were given a display of varied firepower
22:19In Mokans need just a few seconds to accept a new target
22:22It's weapons like these that could prove of more concern
22:25Easy to use and quick to transport
22:27It's this kind of Russian weaponry
22:29That the extremists here
22:31Would gladly ship to their friends in the Balkans
22:33Dan Milosevic has come from an unexpected quarter
22:37With 10,000 Cossacks prepared to sign up to the Serbs cause
22:42On parade
22:44President Milosevic's new model army
22:47Russia's once fearsome horsemen
22:49The Cossacks are offering their services to Yugoslavia
22:52They say they're ready to send 10,000 volunteers
22:56To preserve the Republic's sovereignty
22:58The Cossacks defended the Bosnian Serbs
23:02In 1992
23:04He says
23:05And volunteers are coming forward again
23:07To defend the interests of Serbia
23:09This is a war against all Slavs and Orthodox peoples
23:13NATO is trying to carve a path to Russia
23:17If they're called up
23:19The Cossacks could find themselves facing 8,000 more allied troops
23:23Including 1,500 British soldiers
23:26They're being sent to the Balkans to aid refugees
23:29Amid speculation they could be used
23:32In a ground offensive against Serb forces in Kosovo
23:36But NATO says they'll be peacekeepers
23:38NATO has admitted that one of three bombs
23:42Dropped on the main telephone exchange in the Kosovan capital
23:45Missed its target and hit a residential area
23:48Moscow's sudden talk of Russian military involvement
23:53And retargeting missiles against NATO
23:55Was enough to start
