00:00It's a challenge of communicating across this whole different group of people that we've had to face in the past.
00:05In this exercise, the Dutch command the air, Hungarians the land, Swedes the sea.
00:11Non-NATO countries are represented too.
00:13This man is a general from the Ukraine.
00:16The point is to show the world that future peacekeeping alliances need not be all NATO,
00:21and need not be dominated by the U.S.
00:23I think that the whole Yugoslavian situation have learned a lot.

02:41This is the British forces induction to the Balkans.
02:44Their first order is unambiguous and strictly enforced,
02:48no one to leave the building.
02:50Greece is a NATO member, but here in Thessalonica
02:54its allies' colors have to be hidden from public view.
02:57For these soldiers though, their attention is concentrated further north.

05:29but with 500-pound gravity bombs
05:32that were used in the Gulf War and in Vietnam
05:34for carpet bombing.
05:36Now they may be used to attack big targets
05:38such as sprawling military bases.
05:41The B-52s are the first of about 300 more U.S. planes
05:44joining the NATO force, hounding Yugoslavia.
05:48We will start to attack for more hours,
05:51more targets, and for more directions.
05:55A major focus is fuel.
05:57NATO planes are going back to re-hit refineries and oil depots.
06:02Earlier, Serbian TV played an interview
06:04with the military's head of air defences.
06:07Despite more than five weeks of bombing,
06:09he said the system was still intact.
06:12NATO says it's winning,
06:14but also admitted earlier this week
06:16that Belgrade's integrated air defences are still functioning.
06:20Paul Royal, BBC News.
06:21...so far around this capital,
06:23an eyewitness took these home video pictures.
06:27The smoke trail marked the launch of a ground-to-air missile.
06:37Fifty NATO bombs and missiles landed on or near military targets
06:42during a 12-hour period.
06:44The raids continued through the early hours,
06:46especially around the military airport,
06:49where NATO believed there'd been a build-up
06:51of Yugoslav Air Force planes.
07:00These are the sort of warplanes
07:02NATO has been trying to find and destroy.
07:05The pictures were taken last summer
07:07at Podgorica base during an air force display.
07:10Now the air base has been heavily damaged.
07:12...that any impact has made
07:13on the threat that that poses.
07:16Well, certainly the pictures,
07:18these were being shown on Yugoslav TV,
07:21basically to say that NATO bombing
07:22had not really touched the military capability
07:25of Yugoslav forces.
07:27However, we know that that isn't really the case,
07:30simply because if their surface-to-air missile network
07:32and radar chain was still fully operational,
07:35how come NATO has, in effect, air supremacy?
07:38They're able to operate over Yugoslavia within...
07:41For the fourth time since the campaign began,
07:45Britain has announced an increase
07:46in its commitment to the air war.
07:49Four more Harriers and four more Tornadoes
07:52will join the hundreds of aircraft
07:53already operating in the conflict.
07:57On a morale-boosting visit to HMS Invincible
07:59in the Adriatic,
08:01the Defence Secretary admitted he was buoyed
08:03by the news that splits were appearing
08:05not only within President Belosevic's government,
08:08but also within his army.
08:11But he stressed there'd be no easing down of the campaign.
08:14We believe that air attacks
08:16are both Invincible and...
08:18...was served.
08:29...on the left side of the screen
08:30that are targeted at other aim points.
08:33It's an airfield complex
08:43that occurred on Wednesday, the 28th of April.
08:47The fact that we conducted
08:49this large-scale attack
08:51in addition to increased operations
08:53against fielded forces in Kosovo
08:56reflects our clear intent
08:58to intensify the air campaign.
09:00Air defense radars
09:04and numerous aircraft and helicopters
09:06parked in revetments,
09:08apron areas, and open field areas.
09:11This is the biggest bomb dropped yet,
09:13a 5,000-pound bunker buster
09:15on a tunnel where the Serbs
09:17were believed to be hiding
09:18aircraft and munitions.
09:19If it performed as advertised,
09:21this is what it looked like.
09:24With 10 more B-52s
09:25bound for a forward base in England,
09:27and with 325 more strikes planned for today,
09:30the air war is gathering momentum.
09:33When Serb police tried to set up camp
09:35in this factory,
09:36it was struck
09:37and struck again,
09:39leaving nothing but a smoking ruin.
09:41The Serb military is by no means broken,
09:44but as tanks get picked off
09:45one by one,
09:46and U.S. intelligence officers
09:47see increasing evidence
09:49it is starting to sag.
09:51A prisoner reported, for example,
09:53that seven people
09:54had deserted from his platoon.
09:57My assessment is
09:58that there are increasing morale problems
10:02in the Serb military.
10:03The air war that is lighting up
10:05the Yugoslav night
10:06is costing the U.S. about $40 million a day,
10:09and some precision-guided weapons,
10:11like the air-launched cruise missiles
10:13carried by B-52s
10:14and the satellite-guided bombs
10:16being loaded aboard B-2 stealth bombers
10:18are beginning to run low.
10:20But Pentagon officials say
10:21there is no shortage
10:23of laser-guided bombs,
10:24and just yesterday,
10:25at a port in Germany,
10:26a U.S. ship offloaded
10:28fresh supplies of bombs and missiles
10:30bound for Yugoslavia.
10:32We are not anywhere near running out.
10:34We could fight this
10:34for months and months.
10:36Back at the hour with more.
10:37B-52 heavy bombers
10:40have left Barksdale, Louisiana,
10:42for England loaded
10:43with unguided gravity bombs.
10:45But the Pentagon insists
10:46sending old-fashioned dumb bombs
10:48does not signal
10:49it's running out of smart weapons.
10:51We are not even close
10:53to being out of
10:53precision munitions.
10:55Nevertheless,
10:56the retiring general
10:57in charge of the U.S. Air Combat Command
11:00says B-2 stealth bombers
11:02are critically low
11:03on some of the newest
11:04satellite-guided bombs.
11:05And critics are worried
11:07the Pentagon could run out
11:08of cruise missiles
11:09and other standoff weapons
11:10that afford the greatest safety
11:12to U.S. pilots.
11:14They're going to have to fly
11:15directly over the targets,
11:17encounter surface-to-air missiles,
11:19and anti-aircraft fire.
11:21And that means dead Americans.
11:23So the president
11:24had better get on the stick here
11:25and fill up these ammo coffers.
11:29The Navy says
11:30it has more than enough
11:31cruise missiles
11:32to make up for any
11:33temporary shortfall
11:34in the Air Force.
11:35And while the Pentagon
11:36admits it's low on some
11:37of the newest
11:38precision bombs
11:39and missiles,
11:40it insists it's just
11:41a matter of revving up
11:42the production lines,
11:43which it's doing
11:44for bombs used
11:45by the B-2.
11:46We are now in the process
11:47of tripling
11:50the production rate
11:51from what it was,
11:52and it'll be tripled
11:53very soon.
11:54Meanwhile,
11:54the Pentagon showed
11:55it still has more bombs
11:56it can call on
11:57if needed.
11:58Here,
11:58a 5,000-pound
12:00bunker buster
12:00is dropped
12:01from an F-15
12:02on a tunnel
12:03at the Pristina Airport.
12:04Presumably destroying
12:06aircraft and equipment
12:07trapped deep inside
12:08by previous strikes.
12:10Coming off the target.
12:13Now maneuvering,
12:14making sure
12:15as he's looking out
12:16as well
12:16that he doesn't become
12:17the target himself.
12:19And the bomb
12:19at this stage
12:20is in flight.
12:23It's a direct hit
12:23on the hangar.
12:25There's a secondary explosion
12:26and you can see
12:27some of the material
12:28blowing out of the hangar
12:29as it comes out there.
12:32You can now see
12:33we just freeze the frame there
12:35that the target
12:36has been totally destroyed.
12:41Next clip, please.
12:43This time,
12:44we're looking at the airfield
12:45from a slightly different direction
12:46as I mentioned earlier.
12:48The attacks
12:48that happened previously
12:49were on this part
12:51of the airfield
12:51and an attack
12:53that's already gone through
12:54has hit the dispersal area
12:57and the one we're about to see,
12:58the target marker
12:59linked in the T
13:02of the dispersal area
13:04and apron there.
13:05Again, the crew are manoeuvring,
13:09the pod is tracking the target
13:10and they themselves
13:11are trying to make sure
13:12they don't become the target.
13:14The bombs are in flight
13:16and the two impacts
13:21that you see there
13:22right in the middle
13:23of the target
13:24creating an extensive crater
13:26which will certainly prevent
13:28fixed-wing aircraft
13:29from moving around
13:30at that airfield
13:31for a while.
13:33The next clip
13:34I want to show you
13:35is the Mure rail river bridge
13:38on the border
13:39between Kosovo and Serbia.
13:42Okay, clip please.
13:44There's an alley here
13:45with a distinctive river area here,
13:48wood on this side
13:49and if I can just draw your attention
13:51to a tunnel
13:52which is there
13:53marked at the bottom part
13:55of the screen
13:55and it comes out
13:56this side of the plateau.
13:58The town of Mure
13:59is over here.
14:01The target,
14:02as we'll see it,
14:02is back
14:03to the left-hand side
14:04of the town
14:05so now
14:05we're looking at the tunnel
14:06and now we're looking at the still
14:08from another aircraft
14:09not the attacking aircraft
14:10showing the distinctive picture
14:12of the bridge.
14:14This is the attacking aircraft
14:15locked onto the bridge
14:17at one end.
14:19Again, the manoeuvring,
14:20the pod is slewing
14:21keeping its track
14:22on the target
14:22and the bomb explodes
14:24exactly as where
14:25the crew intended it to.
14:27quite an extensive plume
14:31coming up from that
14:31and as far as
14:34the line of communication
14:35is concerned
14:36that will certainly
14:37be disrupted
14:37over a number of days.
14:41The final target
14:42is a bridge
14:43at Cokingbrod.
14:45At the moment
14:46we're looking
14:46through
14:47the front
14:48of the
14:49tiled pod
14:50of the Harrier crew
14:50probably about
14:52ten miles or so
14:53away.
14:54Quite difficult
14:54to see the target
14:55at this stage
14:55I think you'll agree.
14:57Distinctive dam
14:57at the top
14:58of the screen
14:59and a river
15:00running all the way
15:01through the centre
15:01of the screen.
15:03The pilot
15:04is now starting
15:05to close
15:05with the target
15:06and as he gets closer
15:08he'll be able
15:08to pick out
15:09some damage
15:10which has already
15:10occurred on the bridge
15:11and also
15:12pick out
15:13some of the detail
15:14of the bridge itself.
15:15As we can see here
15:20slight hole
15:22in the middle
15:23of the bridge
15:23and you might
15:24just be able
15:24to make out
15:25the spans
15:25of the bridge
15:26which the pilot
15:27has been able
15:28to pick out as well.
15:31He's now tracking
15:31the centre
15:32of the bridge
15:32starting to manoeuvre
15:35and once again
15:43an explosion
15:44right in the centre
15:45of the bridge
15:45a direct hit
15:46again as a line
15:48of communication
15:49that's an area
15:50that won't be available
15:51for a very long time.
15:54That is a B-52
15:55a gigantic aircraft
15:57used in Vietnam
15:58and of course
15:59in the Gulf War.
16:00Here you see it
16:01I think this is
16:02a practice
16:02in the Nevada desert
16:03but that's what
16:05it would have looked like
16:06going down over Iraq
16:07and if you were
16:08a Serbian infantry battalion
16:11that had been hiding
16:12in a forest
16:12for the last five weeks
16:13and that hits you
16:15I think you'd be
16:16seriously depressed.
16:25...Tirana, Albania.
16:26You know maybe
16:27around Belgrade
16:28right now
16:28they're starting
16:29to look up at the sky
16:30see if they see
16:31parachutes deployed.
16:32The first question
16:33to Shelton
16:34from reporters
16:34after his visit
16:35in Tirana
16:36was one the Pentagon
16:37has been hearing a lot.
16:38when will the Apache
16:40helicopters fly?
16:41The Apaches
16:42are here
16:44and when
16:45they're trained
16:47they're ready
16:47and whenever we decide
16:49it'll be a time
16:50and place
16:50of our choosing.
16:51Shelton wasn't
16:52the only high-ranking
16:53official to visit
16:54troops in Albania.
16:56French Prime Minister
16:57Lionel Jospat
16:58toured a camp
16:59with 300 French soldiers
17:01who arrived in Albania
17:02this week
17:02on a humanitarian mission.
17:04For this building
17:05in downtown Belgrade
17:06let's see that video
17:07please.
17:25Attack against the
17:26Avala
17:27radio relay towers
17:29located just south
17:30of Belgrade
17:31and this video
17:33was also
17:34taken during
17:35the attacks
17:35on Thursday.
17:44The Serb forces
17:45in Kosovo
17:46these included
17:48the Reiro bridge
17:50at Usche
17:51and the Haive bridges
17:52at Kokimbrot
17:54Triestnik
17:55Raschka
17:56and Bistrika.
17:59The following
18:00is an image
18:01of the Bistrika bridge
18:02after our attack.
18:09To add to the squadrons
18:11of heavy bombers
18:12attacking Yugoslavia.
18:14They've been called for
18:15by NATO's
18:15Supreme Commander.
18:17But because America
18:18is running out
18:19of cruise missiles
18:20the B-52s
18:21will be armed
18:22with so-called
18:22dumb bombs
18:23which are not
18:24laser guided.
18:26Fears have been raised
18:27dropping unguided bombs
18:29from high altitude
18:29could mean more
18:31accidental civilian
18:32casualties.
18:33The Americans
18:34have promised
18:35to minimise the risk.
18:37Gary Lloyd
18:37has guided...
18:38Fighters bound
18:39for Yugoslavia
18:39took off
18:40in what is
18:41a round-the-clock
18:42operation.
18:43General Shelton
18:44who had Friday
18:45visited US forces
18:46in Albania
18:47said NATO
18:48had fully anticipated
18:49a long drawn-out campaign.
18:51There's no real
18:52surprise here.
18:53When we went
18:54into this campaign
18:55we knew that
18:55we were going
18:56into an environment
18:59in which we'd have
19:00to be prepared
19:00to do whatever it took
19:01in order for NATO
19:02to prevail
19:02and we're convinced
19:03that we can
19:04and will do that.
19:06What it's taken so far
19:08is about 12,000 sorties
19:10by NATO warplanes
19:11a substantial portion
19:12of those
19:13from Aviano.
19:14We are convinced
19:15that the air campaign
19:16is accomplishing
19:16the objectives
19:17that we set out for it.
19:18We plan to stick
19:19with the air campaign.
19:20We will not be
19:21diverted from that
19:22and our intent
19:23is to prevail
19:24and we feel
19:25that we are confident
19:26that...
19:27An attack
19:27against fielded
19:29artillery gun.
