York Knights take on Toulouse Olympique in the Championship Grand Final this weekend. Here, Peter Smith previews the clash and explains just what a win would mean for York.

00:29York as they were some time

00:32ago

00:32and I was

00:36around when they were playing

00:37at Heweth, an amateur ground

00:40and playing in front of a few hundred

00:42fans and the original York

00:44club actually went bust midway through a season

00:46and they came back as the York

00:48City Knights initially and now

00:50York Knights

00:51there's always been a

00:53lot of interest in rugby league

00:56in York but people tend to go and watch

00:58Castleford or Leeds

00:59now they're starting to watch the Knights

01:01and I think the Knights are

01:02they've been tremendous this season

01:05what a fantastic job Mark

01:07Applegaff

01:07has done

01:09I think he was poorly treated

01:11at Wakefield

01:12he had an impossible task in his season

01:14as coach there

01:16when they had a team

01:21that were obviously going to get

01:22finish bottom of the table

01:23and get relegated

01:24he sort of held things together

01:26there a little bit

01:27and when

01:28when some money came in

01:29at the end of the year

01:30he got the boot

01:31he's re-emerged at York

01:32and he's just

01:33completely transformed

01:34their fortunes

01:35they were struggling

01:35before he was appointed

01:38they went on to

01:41to the semi-finals last year

01:43and lost fairly narrowly

01:44against Wakefield

01:45and this year

01:47I think they've won

01:48the last 20 consecutive games

01:50they've finished top of the table

01:51they've won the 1895 Cup

01:53they've just had an outstanding year

01:56and I think it'd be great

01:58for the city

02:00and for rugby league

02:01in North Yorkshire

02:02if they were to win it

02:04and it would make it a lot harder

02:05for the panel

02:09that are deciding

02:10who goes into Super League

02:12to exclude them

02:13if they win the grand final

02:15they've earned the right

02:16to be in Super League
