00:00Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has been ordered to pay 75,000 ringgit instead of the two million
00:08ringgit in damages originally awarded to Monspace Sandirian Berhad and its founder Datuk Seri
00:14Jesilai Chaswang for defamation.
00:16However, a three-member bench of the Court of Appeal comprising judges Datuk Ahmad Zaidi
00:22Ibrahim, Datuk Colin Lawrence Sequeira and Datuk Faiza Jamaluddin in a unanimous decision
00:29upheld the High Court's finding that Lim had defamed both parties. Justice Sequeira,
00:34when delivering the decision on Monday, said the two million ringgit in damages imposed by the
00:39Kuala Lumpur High Court was excessive. The Court also reduced the costs awarded from 250,000 ringgit
00:47to 50,000 ringgit. According to Lim's counsel, Guok Nhek Siong, the sum had already been raised via crowdfunding.
00:54The sum has actually been kept by the respondent lawyers, so what they will do is they will refund
01:03the whole sum minus the sum that has been awarded. And the interest involved will be given and I think
01:09my client has said that he will be looking into charity of that funds. That's very important because it
01:15wasn't his money. He was very happy with the tremendous support of the public to have protected
01:22him from perhaps financial ruin. So on that basis I think it was a very good decision and the public
01:30will still be there with him and he will fight hard. Monspace and Lai filed a defamation suit against
01:36Lim in June 2019, alleging he made defamatory remarks to the media during visits to the company's
01:43headquarters in 2017 and 2018.
