00:00The Court of Appeal today reduced Kepung MP Lim Lip Eng's defamation damages from RM2 million to RM75,000
00:08while upholding his liability in the suit filed by businesswoman Jessie Lai.
00:14Lai, founder of e-commerce firm Monspace Sundan Berhad, sued Lim in 2019 for accusing her and her company
00:22of running an illegal business and cheating Chinese investors.
00:25In 2023, the High Court ruled in her favour and awarded RM2 million in damages, but the
00:32appellate court found the award excessive and not in line with trends in defamation cases.
00:38The panel ordered Lim to pay RM50,000 to Lai, RM25,000 to Monspace, stating that Lim's
00:46remarks were based on assumptions and showed bad faith and recklessness since he did not
00:51verify his claims.
00:52The court was chaired by Justice Colin Lawrence Sequeira, with Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim
00:59and Faiza Jamaluddin also on the panel.
