00:00Britain's best amateur designers are competing for the biggest career
00:05opportunity of their lives a mentorship with high street fashion royalty Marks
00:11and Spencer gosh let's go this week it's the turn of men's work that's sick we
00:18really want ourselves on the map for men's work so I'm actually really
00:21excited at this year's designers will hopefully bring a little bit more a new
00:23identity terminus oh my nice as always the designers will be closely watched by
00:30the Marks and Spencer experts just probably a little bit too safe I was
00:34expecting a little bit more really don't want to go home as well as this week's
00:39guest expert Mark White is sensational you've created that the level of detail
00:44is something I would wear for sure seven designers are left that's the look don't
00:48even complicate it oh my god all fighting for that dream prize to aid them in their
00:53ultimate goal you're panicking why are you panicking I want to be in that top
00:56three sort of Wyoming oh wait have I done that wrong to dress the nation the
01:02winner is
01:09welcome back designers you've made it to the halfway mark or to put it another thing
01:15you're halfway through now not only are we at the halfway mark but for the first time this series
01:24you'll be designing wait for it men's way men's way I'm ready that's what I'm used to that's what I
01:33know I've never even thought of designing for men I mean I don't have any men to make clothes for but
01:39we'll see men love fashion too and we've definitely got the experts to prove it including someone who
01:46has worked for some of fashion's biggest hitters before launching M&S's first men's work campaign
01:51in over eight years making his return to the design studio the one and only Mitch Hughes director of
01:56menswear M&S welcome back thanks for being here thank you and our special guest expert puts the mark in
02:03Marks & Spencer it's Mark Wright everyone TV royalty radio presenter and fashion influencer Mark Wright is
02:13known for his effortlessly cool style both on screen and off recently he was part of one of Marks & Spencer's
02:21viral menswear moments so Mark can you tell our designers what they'll be creating for this statement
02:32piece challenge yes we want you to design and make an elevated menswear top using British heritage fabrics
02:41and this should be a smart casual look that can be worn during the day try and make it modern and
02:48adding your own personal twist but obviously making it commercial for M&S as well now before you all get
02:53going let's not forget for one of you a career-changing opportunity with M&S awaits and next week is the
03:00semi-final so expectations are going to be really really high so just to warn you the designer in last
03:07place at the end of the statement piece challenge will leave the competition immediately so good luck to
03:15you all there's definitely added pressure today really don't want that person to be me I've not
03:21done menswear so I'm quite nervous for and how I'm gonna get on I make menswear for myself and for my
03:28partner I don't really make menswear for anyone else so I just have to stay calm you have four hours to
03:34elevate your day away and your time starts now go the designers have just four hours to make an elevated
03:42menswear top using heritage fabrics right patterns and today with the double elimination looming there's no
03:52margin for error the lowest place designer will go home at the end of this challenge God
03:57like a wise man once said the fabric room is now open so exciting okay heritage fabric heritage fabric
04:14heritage fabric Mark Mitch this is our statement piece challenge it's elevated menswear using heritage
04:21materials what does that mean we've actually worked with heritage mills since the beginning of menswear M&S
04:26over 100 years we want to try and keep the essence of heritage fabric tweeds or herringbones or flannels but
04:32utilize it in a modern way okay so you want classic fabrics with the modern twist absolutely I need a wool
04:39that's nice Amar when you think of elevated looks what's your go-to so it's that casual feel but something
04:48to it maybe a certain fabric or a pattern that just gives it that bit of edge what are you looking for a
04:53tartan fabric I can't see it the pressure is on how do you want our designers to rise to the occasion we
05:00want to see that bring in their own identity into the design we want to see their individuality but
05:04also making it commercial from M&S is there anything that our designers should avoid over engineering the
05:10garment I think sometimes we put trying put too much on the garment in terms of design keep it simple and
05:14let the fabric do the work and he's like family photos oh my god then these are all my dad oh my god he's
05:23iconic my dad's my muse in this challenge one designer who's hoping to ace the brief on a very personal
05:30challenge is Casey oh you're looking deep in concentration Casey nervous yeah what are you most
05:37nervous about I just never really make men's wear so yeah it's a change for me and for this piece
05:43it's all inspired by my dad but I actually lost my dad in 2020 and so it's kind of like paying a bit
05:51of respect to him how important he was to me how close we were and I just want to make something that
05:56I hope if he was still here he would wear yeah growing up I was very close with my dad sadly I lost my dad
06:04in 2020 was probably one of the toughest points in my life my dad was just your very average working
06:17class guy but at home just constantly be sketching did the learn his drawings and sketches were amazing
06:23and he never really pursued anything like that so I think that's why he really wanted to push me to go
06:28into a more creative career and and really follow what I wanted to do and not be trapped and I've
06:35no doubt you're doing your dad proud every single day regardless thank you good luck we'll leave you to
06:40it thank you thank you Casey's combining two heritage Scottish fabrics on her jacket as well as
06:48adding patch pockets and distinctive metal hardware how high would you put a pocket on a man's chest like
06:57quite low yeah I'd go about that I love the fact that she's using her dad as inspiration and I feel
07:06like that jacket is really cool I like the wax until she's using yeah I think there's a statement piece
07:12in terms of the actual fabrics you've used and also the shapes and the trims and really sense that she's
07:19put a lot into this yeah really excited to see this one yeah definitely yes yes yes which is flying today
07:28look this is weak though in it he's a menswear yeah I've gone down the whole tartan check route which
07:34most people know it's linked to Scotland but if you look historically you'll see it in so many different
07:39parts of the world including the Caribbean Asia and Africa as well and so yeah given my African background
07:46but I'm also from the United Kingdom I like to merge those two worlds together which is hoping to show
07:53off his menswear expertise with his heritage check jacket featuring a boxy design off-center buttons and
08:00unusual statement pockets Richie we've been talking throughout the competition menswear menswear menswear this is
08:11your first opportunity to actually put down what you're notorious for your design looks once again
08:17historical I wanted to bring that historical vibes but modernize it as well I think the shacket is just
08:22a great staple and should be in everyone's wardrobe hmm so instead of going for the classical blue green and
08:29red tartan I thought I'd bring a bit of an African vibe to it with a with a brown and beige as well which
08:35is very on trend as well um you're wearing it too so I think he's pointing that out so that you know
08:40because this is your category menswear are you hoping to break into the top three have to yeah good man
08:50yeah after like that as people have started to go it's become more real so you want to just step up
08:55your game every single time fabric looks so nice to work with it is nice to work with you know really
09:00soft I'm not gonna lie so Richie is going with quite a classic big check what's your thoughts it's
09:06one of those jackets that you've got to be willing to take a little bit of a risk because it's quite
09:10out there but as you got to be careful with the amount of pockets yeah yeah no you're right you
09:14know we all make it modern but it needs to be wearable as well yeah you know what energy you give me
09:22Joseph what fantastic mr. Fox you think I give you the energy of Wes Anderson yeah I'll take that
09:28yeah all right Joseph hello how are you I'm good thanks so talk to me about your inspiration the
09:36colors are actually inspired by where I'm from the new forest okay we got a lot of trees so we got
09:43the greens and I'm right by the coast as well so we got the sea as well and it looks like a blanket
09:47dead cause exactly that was one of my other inspirations as well a blanket my baby blanket
09:52yeah oh did you have a baby blanket had still do Joseph's combining two contrasting check patterns
10:02to make a structured blazer with a bold silhouette I like to wear bold colors myself as a man but I
10:08know that I'm not a lot of men do so it kind of adapted to what the average man would wear
10:14okay so Joseph now it is a bit out there and he needs to be careful that you would put it on the
10:22shelf and you might love it and think it's an amazing design but would you use it oh wait have I done
10:28that wrong yeah I've done that wrong I just hopefully it doesn't go too much on the actual silhouette yeah
10:34and it just goes more of an understated classic shape I made a mistake Alex no you've not I have
10:41what have you done so this is what it should be yeah yeah look what I've done have you done that
10:47I said it on the wrong way I said it on the wrong way I said it on the wrong way God the competition's
10:52getting real now like it is heating up and it's just it's very it's very nerve-racking oh there's
10:59always something in there never never easy designers you are halfway through the challenge
11:05come on okay oh my god no pressure but this is pressure there are my nice scissors serious vibes in here
11:17today everyone's got their game faces on I really want to stay in the competition so that I can show
11:23my students you can do anything you can put your mind to engineering teacher Laura came second with her
11:30autumn dress in the week one statement piece challenge before succeeding with more women's
11:35wear last week but menswear will be her biggest challenge yet double elimination and I've never
11:41done menswear but last week I'd only made one pair of trousers and I won the group challenge so we'll see
11:48what happens Laura's the only designer to have chosen a floral print and is jazzing up the shirt even more
11:56with chest pockets short sleeves and a statement zip instead of buttons I think flowers are a brave
12:05choice I would choose that after a deep discussion with strictly come down since test daily what do you
12:12think about these flowers do you know what I mean I think it's a brave choice of material but I think if
12:17it's the kind of guy who's gonna step out feeling really confident that's the material I would have chosen
12:21it's a very bold floral print and I suppose when I saw your design you've got a zip through as well and
12:26chest pocket so you've got quite a lot going on on the garment and how come you come with a zip and
12:31I just thought with it being a classic shirt shape I thought zip would make it a little bit more
12:37contemporary it's bold to be interesting to see what how it comes off thank you the zip is a really
12:46important part of my design to make it more contemporary if I put buttons on I think it would make the shirt
12:52look too much like a classic shirt and that's not what I was going for I think Laura's using the
12:58own floor print in the room today I think it's really out there as well because she's put the
13:04zip and you've got too much going on the garment hopefully she might change her mind when she comes
13:10to it and maybe put a button or just a simple fastener or a popper so I finished my zip oh that
13:17looks great you happy with how it's going yeah you should be it looks it's really cool I like that
13:23it's a bit different I don't want to change my design so yeah I'm not changing my design
13:31welcome back to dress the nation where the designers are more than halfway through their
13:45first ever menswear brief oh I just broke a needle yay with someone being eliminated at the end of this
13:55challenge some of the designers have decided to go big or go home I think it's at the brief elevated
14:02menswear but then let's not jinx it how did you get in as well well my grandma taught me when I was a
14:12kid yeah how to use a machine just kind of gone from there when I was younger I spent a lot of time
14:19living with my grandma who loved fashion she was always going to shops and so I was always looking at
14:23the nice clothes and I think the way that she always dressed up to go outside I mean even to
14:27the shop she taught me to knit and she also taught me to embroider and I just think that's where my
14:33love of all of this stuff came from just interfacing the placket Alex right over left left over right for
14:40men's left over right for men's well the thing is I wear a lot of women's wear so I just get very
14:44confused after being criticized for his designs not being commercial enough for the M&S customer
14:51Daniel is taking a different strategy I've paired back what I would usually do I'm trying to do
14:57something more classic kind of more tailored I've chosen to make sure that it's as M&S as humanly
15:01possible to make things a bit more commercial Daniel's been inspired by a traditional menswear top
15:07the rugby shirt which he's elevating by making it out of a heritage wool more often used for making suits
15:14it's a suiting wool that's maybe slightly unconventional fabric to use I kind of thought
15:20a way of updating it a little bit still having a bit of flair but also has the idea of kind of the
15:25heritage shape of a rugby shirt I think I'm pretty on message to the brief I'd like to think it would
15:30resonate with the M&S customer I think personally when I saw this it was probably the weakest design
15:36I think what customers like is so they can kind of dress up dress down utilize different ways would
15:43I walk into M&S a marble arch and walk straight to that I don't know my god that's no time at all do
15:54you make men's Bailey or do you always make women's I love design for the girlies but this
16:00has opened me up to men's now so I'm doing like a like almost like a sporty track jacket I've chosen
16:06Prince of Wales check it's quite a formal fabric and I'm going for quite a relaxed silhouette so the
16:12contrast of that hopefully fits the brief Bailey's using the casual design of his jacket complete with
16:19patch pockets zip closure and contrast piping to give a contemporary edge to his classic heritage
16:25fabric so I'm pattern matching so that hopefully when I've got my little pocket it's super seamless
16:33hopefully it'll just make it look way more high-end they sprung it on us that someone's going before
16:42they even get chance to do the collection challenge so so I'm just really want to ramp it up put my foot
16:47down keep sewing I feel like everyone would have that kind of print at some point it's traditional
16:53it's classic how are you gonna make it a little bit different well I think it's like very quintessentially
16:58British so it's about contrasting it with a less formal silhouette I go for lunch wearing that yeah I'm
17:04not like a menswear designer but having done this I'm a bit more confident in it now so you're really
17:10pushing yourself out me it's on this week well yeah I've got to you because I want to be in that top
17:14three I love it oh well good luck I think I've sort of got used to the like quickness of it all now
17:22like you just gotta come in and just get it together Bailey absolutely hit the nail in terms of heritage
17:27check I love the coloration we sell a lot of neutral so for me it's pretty much commercial fabric it's a
17:33fabric that you know very heritage very we've seen it before yeah very safe whereas the others
17:39they're taking more of a gamble but is that a good thing because it's more different we haven't seen
17:43it or we'll tell once they're finished it's really nice doing menswear actually I mean enjoying the
17:50feeling yeah yeah with so much at stake ex-athlete Alex seems to be taking this challenge in her stride
17:56you've got to push the boundaries so it's royal military uniform inspired Navy wall suiting in
18:07herringbone just thought I'm gonna go really understated on the fabric and go really go for
18:11it for the detail and the design Alex is elevating her military inspired jacket with an asymmetric front
18:18wrap her own collar detail and uniquely shaped patch pockets so Alex has gone for a military ass jacket
18:28but all these like jackets lightweight layers are so commercial because actually you can wear them
18:32different ways do you call it a shacket shacket yeah yeah why don't they call it a jerk well
18:38get him looking gorgeous designers get to work you've got 15 minutes left last minute touch-ups to make it
18:48absolutely perfect while Alex seems under control so stressed Casey did everything wrong who struggled
18:59previously with her timings mine doesn't come here darling doesn't finish is once again in a spin breathe
19:06yes focus you sweet she is a little bit threatened with time I just need to get this on and then my
19:13hands and then I'm good I just don't want to be Russian it's crunch time now isn't it you scared intense
19:18I feel a bit of tension in the rooms before I need a hem the bottom of the shirt I think I'm done I'm done
19:24oh god I'm gonna have to do you need a hand yeah is there any chance you could hand sew the two of these
19:32buttons on the pockets and I'll finish the spacing it's dressed now why have I got that bad deja vu right
19:37now because this was mean the first challenge designers this is your one minute warning no you have 60 seconds to
19:47get your designs onto your mannequins come on let's just get that button on let's get it dressed final
19:53touches adding the buttons on I like what I've made I'm happy I didn't change it this one girl Casey this one
20:01oh come on Casey ten nine eight six five four three two one it's done it's done it's done yes well oh my
20:21days so the wire made I didn't finish the garment in the timeframe but I think the idea was there I'm just
20:29frustrated that I ran out of time and I would have liked to finish it properly I'm happy with it I
20:37think it's the most marks and spencers thing I've made that's the aim of the game isn't it is to make
20:41something that boils down you and also marks and spencers I'm happy with how it turned out I didn't
20:46change anything hopefully they liked my design no one wants to be the person going home I want to make
20:53it to the semi-final so I'm pushing the boundaries of what men's wear can be that's what I came here to do
20:58to show who I am as a designer with seven heritage inspired menswear tops ready to be put under
21:05scrutiny by the experts it's time to find out who's managed to hit the brief and which designers dream
21:11of a mentorship with M&S is about to come to an end
21:18Bailey come on up I absolutely love it and the fact that you said you've never made menswear garments is
21:28sensational you've created that the level of detail the pipe in going down the zip and around the collar
21:34it's still different but also very traditional very heritage which we asked for it's something I
21:40would wear for sure this kind of Prince of Wales check and the neutral tones is very commercial
21:46with the pockets on the bias and the straight pockets and a full zip yeah looks perfect come on Laura yeah
21:57and I think there's a lot going on in terms of the the print with the oversized collar I think that the
22:04large zip there's a lot on the garment so I suppose just the balance between the commerciality of the
22:09print and also the wearability the garment for our customer I would probably would prefer it with
22:14buttons whether or not I'd wear it I don't know yet but I would like to try on I think you mark would
22:19wear it like this with Laura veering more towards her personal design style the experts have been
22:29clear that it needs to maintain commercial viability I think the fabrics lovely definitely you can see it
22:35in our stores I think the in terms of the flatless looks a little bit too oversized so maybe take the
22:41chest pocket away but the check and the overall shape is fantastic have attention to detail where
22:47you've utilized the steam details and the shapes on the cuffs contrast pockets it so so you know well
22:53done for that I think it's very classy very classic and different I really like it and despite using
23:03heritage fabrics must be contemporary yeah I mean I love it on very cool quirky very modern I think you've
23:10done a good job I think I can see your vision it's just suddenly probably running out of time you
23:14didn't kind of quite get there it will be a massive shame if time is what you know messes this up for
23:20you because the idea is great and I love the fact that it's a nod to your late dad that's a really
23:26beautiful sentiment and um I like it and you have made your dad proud yes around the hundred zero
23:31all right come on
23:34with all that in mind well Daniel and Joseph have hit the brief of bringing the heritage fabric into the
23:49modern era sticking true to what you like I can see this on your body straight away however I do
23:55shop in M&S and I don't know if I would see this on the floor too much because it's very out there very
24:00different I would say that shape for a male lens it's probably on the on the side of more of a
24:06feminine shape I appreciate not everyone wants to push the boundaries out and show off their belly button so I
24:11appreciate but I appreciate all the comments and yeah completely fair I think in terms of the nod to a
24:19rugby rugby's are coming back it's a very classic shape I was expecting probably a little bit more whether
24:24it's been an oversized shape or the way it's finished at the bottom you could have done that the twill at the
24:28bottom as well just to lift it a bit but listen really nice fabric nicely made nice collar details just
24:34thought it's you could have pushed it the boundaries a little bit more it's a good job a little bit
24:39safe okay designers it's time to reveal the results as you know one of you will not be progressing to
24:49the next challenge so good luck to you all the winner of this week's statement piece challenge is
24:55really I'm so so so made up very well done absolutely super this conditions mad not the week I expected to
25:14win what men's wear probably is in the future now it's got to be hasn't it we barely winning the
25:19statement piece challenge it's time to find out the rest of the rankings and for which designer the dream
25:25ends here in second place is Richie well done Richie in third place is Alex well done Alex our fourth
25:45fourth place designer is Casey congratulations Casey the designer in fifth place is Laura well done Laura
25:57and then there were two Joseph and Daniel one of you will be heading into the next challenge and
26:11and sadly one of you will be going home the designer in last place and leaving the competition is
26:24Daniel I'm so sorry I can finally get some knitting done
26:37you've been an absolute joy to watch here in the design studio and we can't wait to see what
26:47you go on today so bring it a really very proud of myself I think I've learned that I am capable of
27:00being able to push through and create an entire garment I don't know what's next for me but at the moment
27:05I'm gonna continue to sew garments that make me and other people happy coming up let's go let's go
27:11there's friction in the collection challenge are you worried about me is that what it is no not at all
27:16and the M&S customers don't hold back nothing I haven't really seen before I wouldn't personally wear it
27:22welcome back to dress the nation where our six remaining designers are getting the measure of men's
27:35wear barely Richie and Alex no as our top three you're gonna be the lead designers in the collection challenge of course
27:43barely chooses Laura Richie Casey which means Alex you're gonna be working with Josie a little bit of a shimmy
27:53we like that well mr. I please can you reveal this week's collection challenge I sure can in your teams together you would design and make a menswear look that is suitable for the modern workplace working from home working from the office has all changed and I think it needs to be obviously comfort it needs to keep stylish our customers say a lot around look good feel good and obviously when you go to work you want to feel like that so I think just keep that in your head as well and remember it's not just the bosses you need to keep it
28:11your customers you've got a total of five hours you're five hours Kasey
28:19that so i think just keep that in your heads as well and remember it's not just the bosses you
28:23need to impress you'll also be getting a performance review from the customers you've
28:27got a total of five hours your five hours casey five hours starts no there's everything to work
28:39for with this work we're brief as the winning team will automatically make it through to next week
28:45the semi-final i'm thinking a zip on this you just want to be able to unzip your jacket throw it on
28:52the back of your chart probably a bit in there because it's comfortable across the thighs
29:01oh god are you worried about me is that what it is no not at all i'm worried because
29:06menswear can be a little bit scary the collection challenge modern workwear i mean modern workwear
29:12could mean anything these days couldn't it but what are you looking for in particular mitch
29:16i think it's really that use of kind of clean fabrics um smart aesthetic but not too smart
29:21trying to dress for the modern workplace it's a risky game because it's so much more casual
29:27but too casual can make you look unprofessional so there's really a fine line that's the look
29:31don't even complicate it that's simple from meeting to greeting the inspirations are you go from your
29:38meeting and then you go to greeting so you can still wear the same outfit for a nice little
29:42networking or chill afterwards team rich are designing a tailored gray wool trouser which will
29:49have an elasticated waist for extra comfort and to keep things sharp up top they're taking a risk
29:55with their fashion forward cropped sleeve crossover shirt but will it be too bold for the mns customer
30:01oh look i like that that's nice what details are you looking for are we looking for zips buttons
30:09what's the vibe you don't want too many garish trims for workwear it needs to be look stylish
30:14sophisticated practicality is key it's all well and good looking really smart but if it's not
30:18practical and you've got to wear it all day that's not good what if we did like a little buckle there
30:25because a lot of people at work like they have the badge clipped on them all the time don't
30:28yeah do you think this needs a collar i don't think collar okay collar cancelled team bailey's vision
30:36is a practical suit for modern hybrid working featuring a collarless jacket with an additional
30:42buckle detail for work essentials and comfortable barrel leg trousers that's probably it innit yeah
30:51we didn't want something that was too heavy it needs to be comfortable so this is got a tiny little
30:57bit of stretch in it that will make it more comfortable hopefully the designers have thought
31:01about color as well we've really seen a growth of kind of neutrals tonal grays tonal blues
31:06that tonality of color they're quite cool maybe like a beige yeah i'm not against the beige
31:12yeah let's do it let's do it come on come on we're going for a versatile jacket it is
31:18gonna have a little alex touch a little asymmetrical lapel with a really classic trouser alex is sticking
31:29to what she knows best an asymmetric lapel on a boxy colorless jacket joseph is also keeping things
31:35simple with a lightweight beige chino that he hopes will win over the mns customer
31:41we're going to keep the trousers a bit straight kind of similar to what i'm wearing now so it's not
31:46super baggy not super tight just very classy and nice men's wear designer joseph is normally all about
31:53bold but he's running it in this week in a bid to make it more commercial one thing that is glaringly
32:00obvious joseph you're making trousers that are actually beige it is beige yeah you know at the end
32:06of the day is for mns so i this is me designing for mns very good not for myself and it's single
32:11pleat single pleat yeah really clean really minimal but very menswear chic and also alex uh once again
32:20a garment with your visual signature yes what's it called i think i go for the alexandra lapel
32:26at this point i've used it enough i think it needs a name now yeah that's very good a little bit get
32:31that on a t-shirt joseph can have a look yeah the jacket looks quite boxy quite simple but they've
32:38done the overlapping collar perfect yeah it's how i envisioned it it's very similar to the first
32:43shape she made in the first challenge and obviously we're hoping to see a lot more from her so yeah
32:47we're interested to see if in terms of that creative twist how it how it falls onto the garment
32:52stop touching while team alex appears to be playing it safe bailey come here i'm cutting a pocket i need to
33:00see how big your hand is across the room feeling confident yeah me too team bailey are creating
33:08innovative design features to make their workwear work harder look how nice it's gonna look oh my god
33:15i'm obsessed with that including their practical utility clip for office essentials what do you prefer
33:21for my little front clip i think this put it against the navy yeah do you like that yeah i came first
33:30in this statement challenge super made up with that i've sort of had a taste now of a little win so i'm
33:35definitely gunning for another one laura yeah oh that looks so nice yeah that looks really nice the bailey and
33:43laura outfits focused on hybrid working and comfort is really important but also looking smart you can
33:50see the focus on the attentions the details is excellent don't want to speak too soon but oh my god
33:56we've killed that how long they got left there j i don't know do you know
34:03you're halfway through one challenge away from the semi-finals i can't believe it this is mad we've got this far
34:09like team bailey team richie are pushing themselves with bold design features we really need to go
34:17big this time we don't want to risk going home they plan to add a white sportswear stripe to their
34:23tailored shirt sleeve formal streetwear yeah i think that works it makes it like more sporty like really
34:29capture that kind of streetwear customer who wants to look smart as well what you're still waiting for
34:34work yeah a hundred percent spanking oh i love that's nice meeting to greeting i like it yeah i've
34:40not heard that one who came up with that you or richie oh they are taking no praises over there you two
34:48have worked together before yeah casey seem a lot more relaxed in richie's company yeah i think he keeps
34:53me grounded a little bit richie your tailoring is gonna ooze through the design you're making the trousers
34:59right yes i'm doing the trousers so a nice elasticated waistbands if you're at home you're on zoom you're doing
35:04your work meetings you want to be comfortable well done gang uh we won't keep you any longer because
35:07i know time's an issue let's go good luck casey and richie their fabric is quite traditional and safe
35:18like the shape of it looks quite risky the baggish bottoms and the big lapels
35:23junk thought lines yeah like defo elbow length like that's real in right now like that yeah like they're
35:29both seem to be quite on it today yeah they're working well together they seem like they've got
35:34a good plan going on fingers crossed they can get it done in time yeah hopefully hopefully oh look yeah
35:39yeah i think it's cool you're all right joseph yeah how we doing my trousers are coming together
35:45richie and casey might be taking a risk but it hasn't gone unnoticed that alex and joseph are not
35:51kind of goes on my outfit doesn't it how's the fly zip it's done finished that ages ago babe wow
36:00you're a weapon i'm just adding in the pockets really quickly you can see joseph here and alex
36:04they're doing tunnels they've chose a very safe color paper scissors paper scissors joseph doesn't
36:10normally play it safe he's in a dangerous position and he's watched us say the reason why daniel left is
36:15because he's played it too safe you can't go safer than a pair of chinos i think coming so close to being
36:20eliminated from the competition definitely has put a bit of pressure on i guess as a creative as a
36:26designer's job is a very hard to come by and i think having this mentorship opportunity is like
36:31once in a lifetime god i really don't want to go home we've got one hour left aye aye let's go let's
36:42go everyone's panicking it kills me a little bit it's like i can see them right now they know
36:49that someone's leaving today i mean someone's got to go over it it's heartbreaking
37:05welcome back to dress the nation it's so intense
37:09where team alex have time to spare after making a straightforward men's workwear outfit
37:15you all right joseph yes getting there so ever the competitor ex-athlete alex has a plan to boost
37:22their chances of making it into the semi-final you've got 30 minutes left do you know what i'm thinking
37:29what i'm thinking if i have enough time with which is now i'm going to make a turtleneck maybe
37:39pretty much finished the look i'm going to start cutting out a stretched turtleneck
37:44to go underneath i'm going to try and make it a full outfit rather than just a jacket and a trouser
37:49i'm at the point now where i don't want to feel like i've given it 80 percent i want to give it 110
37:54and if i'd left it as it was i would have been given like 75 percent you better start panicking
38:00i could see your naked mannequin my god
38:03you've got this case i hope so you got it tell you what i deserve a gold medal if i do the
38:13designers you've got 10 minutes left just like what else can i do to it
38:17do you know what i mean yeah but you don't need to you don't need to do anything shall i just top
38:22stitch this pocket flap down or no i shouldn't less is more you don't yeah you're so right
38:28because you've got time you don't need to add things you're so right i just don't think this
38:32is going to happen actually now i'm seeing it designers you've got five minutes left five minutes
38:40this is so tricky i think it's too tight it's not gonna work something work no it's too tight it's too
38:48tight oh no it's it's all coming undone yeah the hole in it i think i'm into it no no we can't get
38:55them on can't get them on it's no time if it's not right it's not right that's literally the case
39:00designers you're coming up to one minute that'll do won't it that'll do
39:05she says picking up the scissors i'm gonna get the trousers on now oh what's not we need some sizzies
39:1910 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
39:29time's up step away from your mannequins designers
39:34we've done it we've done it again stress but we've done it yeah we got there in the end so i'm
39:38happy that's what that's what we wanted the sketch we wanted that and it looks like it
39:43great job really great job i feel less likely to get the win on this one for sure
39:48it's down to the customer and the experts uh and if they don't like it then we won't be winning
39:55the semi-final is looming it's very very close i want to make it to the semi-final i do not want
40:01to go home so i think everyone's feeling the pressure i know i am so i'm a bit worried i love
40:07this bit good a little addition wasn't it that went really well couldn't have gone better to be
40:12honest really proud of me and laura experts mitch and mark have examined the designs it's no time for
40:21the mns customers to have their say would any of these collections have them racing to the checkout
40:28here we go i do like this fit it's something i would wear i like the design on the two pockets on
40:33the side the pants quite baggy my type of fit i do think that if the the top was a bit more cropped
40:41it would enhance the fit a bit more that's actually so far i was thinking i should have made it a bit
40:45more cropped so if it was short above the waist it would really kind of promote the shape of the bottom
40:51i don't actually mind what you just said there i think this is probably my favorite i love the little
40:55clip it's a bit different it's got kind of a utility look to it i really like the shape of the
41:00trousers with that nicked in bottom because it gives it a kind of barrel shape which is a bit more
41:04modern i could see my husband wearing actually i'd buy it for him probably actually 65 of our clothing
41:09for men is actually bought by women i particularly like the collar on this one it's a really unusual
41:15cut it's got a very fine pinstripe running through it that's really nice and it's very lightweight
41:20you could wear that any time really that's the beauty of an outfit like that and i like the stripes
41:25down the side on the jacket as well but um i wouldn't personally wear it to an office
41:32i do like the trousers i like the pleats at the front the general cut of them they just look quite
41:37cool okay cool is good i like the jacket i like the flannel trousers and they've got like a draw
41:43string waist which is really useful i think they're really well made and well cut i like this one
41:49slightly basic i mean nothing i haven't really seen before joseph may have just played it a little
41:56bit too safe though just doing a basic chino the fabric of the jacket i think is lovely everything
42:02looks really smart together and in fact i'd like a ladies one of that jacket i think it'd be really nice
42:07well you should have come last week it has a strange color but i kind of think it's cool for what it is
42:13but i don't think it's an outfit i would wear myself personally the collar is very interesting which
42:17is what we went for with the customers feedback taken on board the experts now have the difficult
42:23task of deciding which team will win and who will go home this is a biggie as we steamroll towards the
42:31semi-final let's talk about bailey and laura yeah i think it's plain to see they did a great job it's
42:36classy chic and looks comfortable i think that the level of detail is amazing as well as it being
42:43simple enough nice we've got alex and joseph bottom is very safe joseph done you know we sell
42:49a lot of tunas mns and but what he didn't do is kind of reinvent it or do anything different on it
42:54and i just don't like the the aubergine color top that's wool with the summer chino it's kind of a
43:00wintery look mixed with a summer look and i think that's where they've gone a little bit wrong okay
43:05let's talk about kersi and richard they've obviously worked together before they've done a
43:10good job they can work well together but it's a very out there outfit it's a bit too edgy for me
43:14i would say customers loved it i think they like the color tones of the navy and gray nice little
43:19details nice innovation the waistband perfect which joseph could have put on the other chino so overall
43:26with both challenges taken into consideration who's in the danger zone i think for me we talked
43:31about joseph uh in terms of the safety of his of his garment he didn't really push himself or excel
43:36into the challenge but in the last challenge he totally didn't play it safe so he has risk in
43:41his locker the other person says alex i just believe it's a probably a carbon copy really of
43:47the first outfit i think having a signature and having the shape she needs to obviously you know
43:52elevate herself in this competition and show she can do mainstream women's men's design um and it
43:58can't just be a one-trick pony i'm at the semi-final just around the corner the stakes are so high
44:04this is not the time to be tripping up designers if you ask me menswear week has been a rip roaring
44:11success but no one's asked me so there you go we can now reveal that the team with the must-have
44:21collection and heading safely into the semi-final is
44:30bailey's team
44:36i'm literally speechless like semi-final you what i can't believe it i'm really really happy i
44:43genuinely had no idea which way it was gonna go so yeah i'm over the moon now unfortunately
44:48we do have to say goodbye to one person from one of the remaining teams either team richie or team
44:55alex our experts thought that this designer's work is always distinctly bold and original
45:03but this week the experts felt they didn't quite hit the brief therefore the designer leaving the
45:11competition is joseph i'm sorry joseph joseph you've been absolutely fantastic in the design studio it's
45:24a shame to see you go everyone give joseph a big round of applause thank you joseph it feels very
45:29bittersweet but i've had the best time as a designer this competition's taught me a lot that i need to
45:34just trust my own instincts and that i'm very capable of making things and i've been very very proud of
45:39everything that i've made very excited for the future next time on dress the nation it's the
45:45semi-final i'm on it today man she's back in women's wear thank god i think you've just got to take
45:54these rests i really want to reach the final so let's hope the judges like it quite ambitious yeah
46:01moment of three last chance to make it through to the final
