00:00A group of top amateur designers are being put through their paces as they compete for an
00:16exclusive mentorship with Britain's most loved fashion retailer Marks and Spencer
00:21this week it's all about women's wear no one else is having that that's us yeah I love leopard print
00:29this is challenging with the designers put under the microscope by our M&S experts what sets a great
00:37women's wear designer apart is passion creative flair not just what's happening now but predict
00:43what's coming in the future thinking about what the customers are going to want before they actually
00:47want it and this week's guest expert Frankie bridge I love leopard print now that it's all finished I
00:54think it looks so expensive eight designers remain in pursuit of the ultimate prize about in everything
01:00I'm stressed a mentorship with Marks and Spencer that will help them towards their shared dream
01:07please say you love the jacket please to dress the nation who's gonna come out on top
01:17hiya loves come on in after last week I really want to keep the momentum going
01:25athlete mentality's switched on now consistency is key well designers fancy seeing you here welcome you
01:34made it to week two yeah so week one was filled with a lot of highs and lows and this week I want it
01:41to be filled with just highs now I feel super real to step it up a notch and really lock in now we are
01:47about to enter pumpkin spiced latte season more commonly known as autumn is it warm is it cold does it come
01:58with whipped cream it's confusing time it certainly is here to make sure that your designs hit the sweet spot
02:05it's M&S's director of women's wear the one and only Maddie Evans
02:10and joining Maddie is a devoted follower of fashion once a member of the Saturdays now an icon every
02:20day of the week please welcome the one and only Frankie bridge pop superstar Frankie bridge swap the
02:27microphone for the mannequin and is now a leading fashion influencer and entrepreneur with their own
02:32clothing line quite literally under her belt welcome Frankie hi guys oh all right Frankie please could
02:46you reveal this week's women's words statement piece challenge so for this challenge we want you to
02:51design a women's autumn jacket I feel like it can dress up any outfit and make you look finished and
02:57polished so it needs to be something that's going to work hard so keep that in mind it tends to be more of
03:02an investment piece so think about how it takes you through the season right through from that end
03:07of summer all the way through to December and beyond as ever with the statement challenge it's about
03:13bringing your personality your personal style it's also about continuing to apply that commercial lens
03:19thinking about the customer all the time that's a big ask Maddie it is wow think about team okay
03:25designers you have four hours to design your autumn jacket and your time starts now
03:32oh my god all of a sudden Frankie from Saturdays is in front of me I wanted to either burst into tears or burst into the song
03:48oh hey Richie we're friends today we are enemies for enemies don't cross this line
03:58please put a fence up is the fabric room not open yet the fabric room is now open
04:05it's not green there's always accent colors that come through you know that big kind
04:10of overarching trends that complement all of those neutrals chocolate's a massive color at the moment
04:15that's what I'm looking for looking for looking for me to the same page challenge what are the
04:19autumnal colors that you think that our designers should be leaning into Frankie I'm quite a neutral
04:22girl so all the browns and the beiges yeah that's nice that is a classic flannel in it it's not green
04:30there's always accent colors that come through you know that big kind of overarching trends that
04:36complement all of those neutrals chocolate's a massive color at the moment chestnut oh that
04:41brown is nice I don't think I would go super bold because you got to wear it with lots of different
04:47things yeah yeah oh this is nice to go red and blue I think when you move into that autumn season
04:52and it's much less about print as well so print is synonymous for the summer season it's not that you
04:58don't ever have it it's just less dominant that's pretty thank you so if the customer spending more
05:03money they want more practicality in a jacket sometimes a hood's good whether it's kind of
05:08part of the piece or it's embedded in the collar and you can take it in and take it out but style
05:13has to lead mine's isn't very practical it's got a hood and it's not waterproof but like I would still
05:17wear that you'd still wear it oh this is interesting trench coat kind of vibe everybody wears those in
05:23Scotland you know the inspiration behind it is country walks me and the wife often take the kids out
05:30and I always visualize her in beautiful stunning jackets you know I live with my wife my two kids
05:38the house is always full of energy my kids are part of my creative world I spent many times sewing
05:45with my little one in my arm so I'm definitely inspired by my kids you know so yeah they are a
05:50driving force in terms of why I create winning the mentorship with M&S would mean everything to my
05:56family my kids especially it would inspire them and help them to believe that they can become anyone
06:03they want to be I'm so used to just sewing pieces in the little corner of my flat I'd love to just know
06:10more and soak up more knowledge it would just be everything to me a tailor by trade Richie is adding
06:16his signature style to a trench coat switching khaki for brown suede with check details but that's not
06:23he's on the edition I thought let me just add a little bit of a bow tie in there just to
06:27feminize it and make it a bit different so we'll see how that little bit of your own kind of flair
06:31definitely women's wear isn't necessarily your thing is it not at all women's wear is not but is
06:36this jacket giving you the chance to cross over with what you've learned in men's wear 100%
06:41oh flip sake cut through the fabric Richie how do you think it would affect him that he tailors for
06:51men usually and this is women's jacket there's definitely a difference because obviously we
06:57have different physical bodies but the finishing touch of the bow that's quite a nice design detail
07:03yeah I think while Richie moves away from his comfort zone shock I'm going for leopard print again again
07:13Casey is sticking to what she knows I am a bit worried that the judges might think that the leopard print
07:21that's all I really do but I was really looking for quite a bold print in a wool fabric and this just
07:27seems to be like the boldest choice so let's get sewing Casey's fabric choice is a bold one especially
07:34given that her leopard print collection was criticized by the M&S customers last week there's too much
07:40leopard print one leopard print item would be fine in a capsule collection three items in leopard print
07:46just wouldn't work this week Casey is designing a cropped jacket with a boxy cocooned fit and a single
07:54button fastening she's the only designer to incorporate a hood it's quite an oversized hood
08:00just to keep you cozy because the whole purpose of the jackets for warmth and over keeping you dry
08:07or anything like that so I'll just take an umbrella it's fine so Casey leopard for me personally I don't
08:15know how leopard can be subtle but it's slightly more subtle this is it's not garish no and then I
08:21like that cocoon shape and there's nothing better than a hood I'm feeling stylish but cozy and cocooned
08:28at the same time it could be really good yeah it's giving me like Grace Jones or something yeah
08:33Casey is not alone in her love of leopard print it's what you plan to do
08:40oh that's very similar to me leopard print again oh is it yeah I will never ever ever have enough of
08:48leopard print I love leopard print Laura's field jacket is made from brown corduroy and she's hoping
08:55to hit the sweet spot with accents in her favorite print so I've got two pockets on the bottom two
09:01pocket flaps and then I've got a statement leopard print pocket to go on the front as well I think
09:07what's wondering me with Laura is the leopard print with that brown I'm not sure it goes that
09:11well yeah too much of a contrast yeah it's giving Flintstone a little bit leopard print is getting
09:17its comeback this season in it and Julia who's also on the field jackets mm-hmm it's very similar to
09:24Laura's so I'm gonna have to really give it a bit of vroom she's using a combination of fabrics as
09:30well isn't she but her leopard print I feel is more subtle yes so I think if you're someone that's not
09:35as brave it kind of blends in totally the rest of the jacket mm-hmm seamstress Julia has turned her
09:42hand to many garments but an autumn jacket is all new it's the first time I've made like a casual
09:48jacket is a northern girl I don't attend not to wear jackets anyway even in the car just put it on a
09:54big jumper and hope it doesn't really know I don't break down on there a one going up to
09:58Cramlington hello I've got leopard print details and you've both gone for some sort of like field
10:08jacket jacket yeah it may be similar but Julia is hoping her subtle beige leopard print fabric
10:17curved pockets and rounded off collars will attract a more mature M&S customer make me and see to the
10:24Nana market yeah with a scarf and love it you make clothes for drag queens don't you sometimes yes
10:33that's fab we should think of a drag name for you sizzling scissors or you could be stitch please
10:40or you could be thready mercury oh that's really good yeah yeah I'll leave you with that get on with it
10:49good luck thank you thready mercury I love that that drag name was so good thready mercury just call me
11:00thready hopefully they're both level oh you've got your poppers on already that yeah oh you're so ahead
11:10oh that's really good what have you still got to do an awful lot again designers you're halfway through
11:19the challenge good luck breathe and just crack on keep stitching his wife show have I got a bogey
11:33and I'm not by no means a tailor but I do like like a structured silhouette I'm just going for classic vibes
11:43Bailey's design is a mix of a bomber jacket and blazer with side pockets and press stud fastings
11:49to emulator bomber coupled with the straight fit and angular collar of a blazer I'm trying to go
11:55as M&S as I possibly can while still being true to myself I feel like I'm a love island or somewhere
12:04my first taste of fashion going on a sewing machine was my textiles a level and yeah I loved it and
12:11that's what I've carried on doing so coming out of uni and sort of struggling to get jobs in like
12:16the field that I really want I went to a fortune teller because I just wasn't really sure where my
12:21life was headed and I sat down and had my cards read and she said you'll be entering into a contract
12:29and it will be in fashion drawer on the floor so we'll just have to see
12:34Bailey blending a blazer and a bomber two really kind of key jackets for the season in my head I can't
12:41imagine how the two go together but I do really like the material yes I do I think they really
12:45complement each other
12:50I'm still very much in a lot of pieces it's a bit it's a bit of mess right now
12:56I won't lie there's no end in sight at the moment you can't press leather Bailey has chosen an ambitious
13:05combination of fabrics but they are not easy to work together walls really forgiving and you can
13:10press it and it's sort of just it loves the iron wall but leather absolutely not can't touch it so
13:16it's this is the tricky part joining colors
13:24why is this fabric so slippy like ridiculously slippy just keeps slipping and sliding all over the gap
13:33i'm stressed
13:34I'm stressed
13:41cut
13:42reset cameras
13:43Vernon
13:44Vernon K please return the mannequin to props
13:51I yeah I'm on an M&S shoot all right see you in a bit sorry
13:55pass
13:56welcome back to dress the nation where our eight remaining amateur designers are creating a wardrobe
14:08staple the autumn jacket the back looks cute it'll fasten by like coming over like that um and then
14:18i'll have pressed us down if i've got time to do it Bailey has managed to get his leather and wool
14:23jacket assembled it's just this finishing like finishing the lapel and things like that
14:30how are you bro yeah not too bad you good must got a jacket
14:34yeah man not doing too badly yeah bro yeah look at that oh sleeves are coming out nice
14:38so my mum has this my mum has this golden jacket that she wears everywhere um and she absolutely loves
14:43it and my mum likes big accents things like that so hopefully i can make a jacket that she would
14:50actually wear that's the idea inspired by his mum Daniel has designed a quilted autumn jacket
14:56with tie fastenings and a large collar he's hoping his fabric choice will add a bit of fun
15:03we have a sleeve i think it's a really niche print yeah i think you're either that woman or you're not
15:12yeah yeah it doesn't feel that seasonally appropriate either it's gonna get dirty yeah it definitely is
15:19there you go imagine done just do a gilet oh stunning matches your outfit
15:25much like Daniel Joseph is inspired by a loved one so when i was 14 i actually
15:33lost my mum she passed away i guess it just made me realize that life is too short you never know how
15:39much time you've got left so you might as well do what you want as long as you're happy in the
15:42moment then i think that's all that matters really i really love that color yeah i think that color
15:48combo is really nice when i wake up in the morning that's the first thing i want to see
15:52colors just makes me happy and i just think the world needs more happiness
15:57joseph is making a cropped quilted jacket sticking to his signature colorful style it will be reversible
16:03with red on one side and blue on the other so i'm essentially making two jackets and sewing them
16:10together good i have a jacket well done yeah now i've got to make another one what do you think about
16:17the color choice it feels a little bit primary yes yeah bit naive yeah yeah oh i love the saturdays
16:26i just can't believe she's here i'm so gassed to meet her i'm ready for the hip hop beat
16:34do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do surprise oh my gosh your eyes just went
16:43straight to frankie yeah i'm a bit obsessed right now oh really i understand but have you been
16:50singing and sewing oh of course strong red dark yeah it's like something you'd wear to like one of
16:56those traffic light parties do you know what i mean i'm taking wait yeah listen i hope you've all
17:03fired up i'm ready to go let's go higher come on exactly okay come on i feel alive do you know what i mean
17:10i'm going honestly i'm victorious that's it i'm getting cancelled by friendship you need to sit down
17:15with your ego i'm a bit unsure now if a bright red is is the right choice but i think i'm just going
17:23to stick to my guns i think that's kind of what you have to do as a designer designers you've got one
17:28hour less time flies babe oh god just tell you how time runs out so quickly chop chop joseph isn't the
17:37only designer who has opted for a bold color choice i see it as a beautiful color some people may not like
17:43it but i think it's always important to go for stuff people will question as an ex-professional
17:50cyclist i'm definitely more competitive than most people and it definitely comes through when there's
17:56a challenge so i think i'm going to have to make sure i don't show that too much but deep down i think
18:02i really want to win in it to win it again this week alex has designed a chore jacket slightly
18:08cropped with a boxy fit her aim is to stand out with her choice of color something attractive about
18:16disgusting colors no literally yeah because everyone's afraid to use them but i think you
18:20should just dive in and give them a go absolutely so alex i'm not sure about the color no it's it's
18:26quite bold it is oh but it is giving grass yes it is good it is definitely slash moss maybe that's what
18:36it is yeah yeah autumnal vibes yeah but let's see yeah designers you've got 30 minutes remaining
18:47go on give it some welly go for it go for it 30 minutes left to complete your autumn jacket time is
18:55of the yeses all right buttonholes baby i just don't know whether to go in with the press studs
19:01on that how much have you got left to do quite a bit it's like panic just want to have a finish
19:06garment then i'm just doing one button to cinch it in aj's got something to say 10 minutes left i need
19:12a thin bomb ain't no going back now ow so i went for quite a statement button go big or go home i wish it
19:19was not the leopard print it's a bit tacky she's in no you will not you don't jam now designers you've
19:28got two minutes left gosh it's getting a bit intense now isn't it my hands are just shaking so much
19:34if it's not on your mannequin you should be panicking get it on i'll be lucky if i get there
19:39oh i love that that looks well good actually doesn't it there's so many threads wicked
19:48it's not going in five four three two you got it designers time's up away from your mannequins
20:00please well done i feel confident i don't want to allow myself to feel anything else it's not to the
20:08standard i would have hoped to have achieved but the idea is there it's still i think very commercial
20:14um but a little bit different from standard yeah i'm kind of chuffed with that i hope i'm not going
20:22to get the reputation as the cat lady it's definitely not intentional it's just somehow i've ended up back
20:28here again i forgot to put my bow the signature bow that i wanted but it happens it is what it is
20:38the designers autumn jackets are ready for inspection well they have displayed their
20:47personal style and shown they have what it takes to design one-off pieces for marks and spencer
20:54with their combination fabric autumn jackets have richie or bailey hit the sweet spot
21:01you know what i really like the colors and i really like the materials that you've chosen
21:05i think they complement each other really really well it's got a real kind of heritage vibe as
21:10well so i think you've done an excellent job all right richie come on up the femininity that for me
21:16is what's lacking and can clearly see that you have mastered menswear but just adding that feminine
21:23touch i think would have made a real difference for me if you took away the check and put the bow on
21:28i think i'd have liked it a lot more maybe where did the bow go yes it got lost in time
21:38the experts were clear that neutral is key in autumn
21:41so have joseph and alex taken it too far with their bold color choices
21:47i was really unsure about the color but now that it's all finished i think it looks so expensive
21:52you do have to obviously have impact with your product in a store and i do think this is a head
21:57turning piece well done thank you i really love the versatility of it and the fact that you can
22:04turn it inside out and wear it in a completely different way i think people love that nowadays
22:09you want more wear for your money color wise for me i think there could have been a more autumnal
22:14kind of palette maybe we would have just tipped the balance um but really well made and well done
22:20has daniel hit the mark for autumn the bows are something that a lot of people are buying at
22:25the moment i think it's probably more of a summer jacket than an autumn jacket the fabric is not
22:32something that i would wear and i wonder whether the marks and spencers customer would how will julia
22:38and laura fair with their leopard print field jackets for me this leopard print's quite loud but i
22:46really love the shape and the gold buttons it's just a little bit too contrasting for me bet lynch
22:52would absolutely love that i love leopard print and i feel like this is a really safe and easy way to
23:00wear it but i don't love the shape and general style it doesn't feel the most modern and probably not
23:07the most stylish as well with leopard prints not hitting the mark so far will casey have more
23:13success with her hooded number i think you've done an absolutely brilliant job of answering that
23:19brief i can see a lot of people being really attracted to this i personally feel like this
23:25is something that i would wear you know doing the school round with a pair of leggings and a pair of
23:28trainers i feel like it would just make the outfit come together so for me it works stunning garment
23:34really well done thank you oh well done yeah okay designers you've heard what our experts think
23:44so now it's time to find out where you've been placed in the statement piece challenge
23:50in reverse order in last place this week is
23:55julia okay i think they were quite fair to be honest i wasn't happy with the end product i've
24:06got the team challenge to go so i can maybe pull it back with that in seventh place was daniel
24:12sixth richie laura was fifth in fourth place is
24:17joseph well done joseph there we go in third place we have
24:33alex well done alex
24:38so therefore the silver medalist in second place is
24:47bailey come forward bailey well done
24:52which means of course the winner of the statement piece challenge is casey
25:01well done casey excellent stuff oh look at how happy you look
25:08buzzing well done you feeling good yeah i'm feeling amazing thank you it feels amazing to come
25:16first and i completely did not expect it at all it's definitely given me a massive confidence boost but
25:21yeah i still definitely will be pushing myself as far as i can
25:27coming up on dress the nation designers your next collection challenge tensions mount
25:33it's like a lot of intense conversation it doesn't look intense
25:45I don't know when you get it off, help!
25:53Cut. Reset cameras.
25:55Vernon!
25:56Sir and Kay, please return the mannequin to Bronx.
26:02Welcome back to Dress the Nation,
26:04where our eight remaining designers are proving their prowess in women's wear.
26:09Good morning, everyone. It's a brand new day here in the design studio.
26:14The top four from yesterday's challenge get to pick their teams.
26:18Casey chose Richie,
26:20Bailey, Julia,
26:22Alex chose Laura, meaning the final team are Joseph and Daniel.
26:26Are you ready to get going?
26:28Yes.
26:29Or should I say sewing?
26:31Oh, there she is!
26:33I'm here all day, guys.
26:35All right, designers, let's find out more about your next collection challenge.
26:39She's going to take you to the bridge. Frankie, over to you.
26:43So, in your teams, you're responsible of creating a collection.
26:47Something that the wearer can wear from the daytime to the evening.
26:51Something that works from nine to five and five to nine.
26:54Madi, how can our designers bridge the gap from day to night?
26:59It's relentless.
27:01So, think about kind of transformative outfits that work together and that the customers feel as confident coming in to work with, so they don't feel out of place, but equally they feel really, really special when they go out in the evening and have a, you know, date night with their girlfriends.
27:17Now, remember, it's not just our experts that are going to be taking a close look at your designs.
27:23The M&S customer will once again be making an appearance in the design studio.
27:28You've got a total of five hours to complete your day to night collection.
27:32Good luck, cos your time starts now!
27:36Yeah, let's go!
27:38Go, go, go!
27:39Come on, Daniels.
27:40That's it, right, we're going straight in.
27:42Come around, come around.
27:43Get my sketch, good sketch.
27:44So, this was a silhouette I was thinking of.
27:47The winning team will be safe and automatically through to next week, so there's everything to soar for.
27:53Day to night, what can she wear?
27:54Right, come on, Julia.
27:56We've got this girl.
27:57Maddie, the collection challenge is from day to night.
28:01Mm-hm.
28:02How did they get that?
28:03It might be about coming with something that's more kind of evening wear, but applying, whether it's a jacket or a cardigan, and then you kind of shed one of those items, and then you accessorise it, and then you're ready to go.
28:16For a night out.
28:17You can't go wrong with a nice dress.
28:19Yeah, I think it's something that you can dress up and dress down quite easily, a nice dress.
28:22I think maybe a jacket might...
28:23Mm-hm, I agree.
28:24But you want to still see the dress underneath, so maybe something a bit cropped.
28:27Cropped.
28:28We've got this, we've got this.
28:29Team Joseph's day to night design includes a flowy, boxy dress where shape can be added for the evening, and a cropped jacket which Joseph hopes will add an air of sophistication.
28:41This is going to be very Chanel, I'm very happy.
28:43Good.
28:44Having both received critique for going too bold, Joseph has decided to switch things up.
28:49We've gone a bit muted this time.
28:51If we're showing our versatility and adaptability to what M&S is looking for, then I think we're onto a winner.
28:57Hopefully they've had a good conversation about what's going to complement each other, because that's the other thing to think about.
29:07How do they work together really well as an outfit?
29:09I'm thinking like a tie neck top.
29:12Dead long ties.
29:13Dead long ties to the floor.
29:15Really long.
29:16Certainly you can bring it round to the front and tie it in a nice pussy bow tie.
29:19OK.
29:20That's such a good idea.
29:21Team Bailey are designing a top and trousers combo.
29:24The top will have a large bore feature which can be styled differently from day to night, paired with Julia's Capri style trousers.
29:33What sort of fabric are we going to look for?
29:35Well, you know me, I like me black and white.
29:37You know me black and white, do you?
29:39Black and white.
29:40Julia, love her.
29:41She's wicked.
29:42She's been sewing longer than I've been alive.
29:44Oh, look at that.
29:45Oh, my God.
29:46How sheer are we?
29:48Double it up.
29:49No one else is having that.
29:50That's ours.
29:51I want to get you something nice for your bottom.
29:53Yes.
29:54No, I think that's perfect, actually.
29:55Right, come on, Julia.
29:56We've got this, girl.
29:58You're in a day to night outfit.
30:00You're in a day to night outfit.
30:02So are you.
30:03I'm in a day to night outfit.
30:04I'll get a taxi.
30:05I think in M&S they always have a statement piece, you know, in the window.
30:12Yeah.
30:13And this is like the statement book.
30:15Using burgundy denim, team Alex have designed a co-ord with a wide leg trouser paired with
30:21an off-the-shoulder button up top, which Alex hopes will stand out.
30:25I've not seen that before, ever.
30:27No.
30:28Is it daytime enough as well?
30:30I would go in a meeting with that, you know, a little bit of shoulder.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Alex and Laura.
30:35Alex is the design lead, but I don't know how it's going to kind of fare when Laura is
30:40a teacher, so she's used to being in control.
30:43So Alex is really good at draping, but I don't do any draping.
30:46I always follow patterns.
30:49A good seamstress matches the seams.
30:53A good designer follows their heart and cuts as they go.
30:58That's like a lot of intense conversations.
31:00It does look intense.
31:02You're just going to let go, like, when you just unleash yourself.
31:06I think because of the engineering, I'm more structured.
31:10There we go.
31:12That's called teamwork right now.
31:14Like team Alex, Casey and Richie have also designed a co-ord.
31:18They're combining a wide leg trouser with a cropped tailored jacket in classic blue denim.
31:24We're going for the double denim and we think that denim's the perfect fabric to take it right through from day to night.
31:30From day to night, yeah.
31:31No more animal print.
31:32Staying away from the animal print today.
31:34But will their combination of skills give them the edge?
31:37I need to understand more about the woman.
31:39So, yeah, very important when it comes to the M&S customer.
31:42I feel like I've got, like, the feminine vision and Rich has the tailoring skills.
31:48Tailoring, yeah.
31:51So, what are you making?
31:52So, we've got, like, a co-ord.
31:54Nice co-ord going on.
31:55That we think, you know, could easily be styled up or down.
31:58Yeah.
31:59You're working solidly as a co-ord.
32:01Yeah, very good.
32:02Yeah, very good.
32:03We are too, right?
32:04Yeah, we're a great co-ord.
32:05Co-ord.
32:10Designers, that's one hour gone.
32:15Hurry up!
32:18Or is it not tuned on?
32:20It's on, but it's low.
32:33Is it plugged in?
32:34Yes!
32:35Oh, you've got it on off.
32:36Oh, is it off?
32:37Yeah.
32:38Oh, I thought I had it on.
32:41There you go.
32:42Just needed a burn.
32:44Wicked, thank you.
32:45I'm just pinning her on the mannequin, just to see how we're going,
32:49cos it's a very technically difficult piece.
32:53Alex's off-the-shoulder top is coming together.
32:56Would be a bit formal for me to wear to work, to school, but I love it.
33:02I worry at the top.
33:03Obviously, it's meant to be day and night.
33:04Yeah.
33:05I think off-the-shoulder is quite limiting for a lot of women in the day.
33:09When you're working and in the day.
33:10I'd wear this to work.
33:12If I worked in, like, an office or something, I would.
33:14Yeah.
33:15I think it's definitely for an office.
33:16Yeah.
33:17School, I think.
33:18I love your dresses.
33:19I think commerciality, I've really got to focus on that
33:21and make sure I'm going for something really commercial.
33:24Oh, yeah.
33:25Tricky.
33:26Ever-confident Alex is having a wobble.
33:30This is challenging.
33:32Yeah.
33:33Really challenging.
33:34I don't know.
33:36I'm doubting everything.
33:43Laura, you know what I'm thinking?
33:44Mm-hm.
33:45It'll be two, two evening.
33:48Yeah.
33:49I think we just need to have a think about how it's going to turn out
33:52and how it's going to look.
33:53Whether it's going to be versatile enough.
34:03Hi.
34:04Yeah.
34:05I'm on an M&S shoot.
34:06All right.
34:07See you in a bit.
34:08Sorry.
34:09Pause.
34:15Where are they?
34:16Really?
34:17AJ Walsh.
34:18I don't know when you get it off.
34:19Help!
34:25Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where Alex is having a crisis
34:28of confidence in the day-to-night collection challenge.
34:32It's too heavy, I think, with the denim on denim,
34:34with the denim sleeves, with that.
34:36I just keep it really simple.
34:37I agree, because it's still the vision with the lapel.
34:41Well, it's just more refined.
34:43It's more M&S.
34:45Alex has scrapped the sleeves and decided against an off-the-shoulder
34:49design.
34:50She's now making a long asymmetric waistcoat.
34:53I think what we were going for was a little bit too evening.
34:56It wasn't fully day-to-night, and it just wasn't sitting right.
35:00It wasn't feeling right in my gut, so I just followed that voice
35:03and we just transformed it and made it a little bit more wearable.
35:06Alex has got a lot more flair when it comes to design.
35:10So I did take a little bit of a back seat, and then I think my input
35:14paired it back a little bit.
35:16You're in the zone.
35:17We are.
35:18It's so quiet.
35:19I know.
35:20I mean, Alex, you've got quite the game face, though.
35:23What do you do to psych your opponents up?
35:25So at the start of a race, you roll up on the track.
35:28There's two riders, like 2,000 people in the velodrome.
35:31Silence falls.
35:32And you just next to each other, hands on vows, and you just stare.
35:37You can't look away.
35:38Come on, let's do this.
35:39Yeah.
35:40Three, two, one.
35:41Oh, I thought I had to look at you.
35:43I've lost already.
35:44Yeah, you've lost.
35:45You're terrible.
35:46Holly!
35:47Get out.
35:48Frankie!
35:49Do-do-do.
35:51With a slightly less competitive spirit,
35:54Bailey and Julia are enjoying a slower pace.
35:57So it's always just been, like, me elders,
36:00and I've never really had, like, young people,
36:03so that's probably why I got on with you so well, I reckon.
36:06Oh!
36:07Yeah.
36:08It's just a little...
36:09You're like a little piece of home, Julia.
36:11Those two are so calm.
36:12They're just chatting about their lives.
36:13Have you got any pets?
36:14No, I haven't, no.
36:16I used to have a dog.
36:17They look like they're kindred spirits.
36:19They're getting on, like, a house on fire.
36:21What kind of school life did you have?
36:23They've gone for all black.
36:25Mm-hm.
36:26So quite a literal interpretation of an evening outfit.
36:31Yeah.
36:32Julia, how long neck?
36:34How low?
36:35I think quite low.
36:36Quite low.
36:37Because the pussy ball's going to cover it.
36:38Yeah.
36:39You're so right.
36:40Even though you have the bow on,
36:41Yes.
36:42I think for a lot of women,
36:43a fully see-through top is quite a lot.
36:46Yeah, yeah.
36:47And it looks quite eveningy.
36:48It does.
36:49I've got my back at my front.
36:51Good.
36:52What do we think of the...
36:53Lift it up the body.
36:54I think it needs to come in a bit, no?
36:55It needs to come in a bit.
36:56It's a bit...
36:57It's a bit boxy.
36:58Joseph and Daniel.
36:59Yeah.
37:00It is a classic in your wardrobe.
37:02A little kind of Chanel-y jacket.
37:03Yeah.
37:04You can dress it up.
37:05You can dress it down.
37:06But they're pairing that back with a dress.
37:07Yeah.
37:08So it'd be quite interesting to see how they work together.
37:11I'm excited to see it.
37:12Yeah.
37:13Yeah, I like that.
37:14It's coming together.
37:15Yeah.
37:16It looks like a dress.
37:17Yeah.
37:18Designers, you've got one hour left!
37:21No way.
37:22Come on.
37:23The clocks are broken.
37:24Yes, Guff.
37:25Yes, Guff.
37:26I swear.
37:27How short.
37:28You don't want it super long.
37:29We want to show off the details, the nice pleated details that we have in the trousers.
37:33Richie is keen to prove he's getting the hang of women's wear.
37:37I think that's perfect.
37:38Mm-hmm.
37:39Here is, that's stunning.
37:40Cool.
37:41I'm a massive fan of double denim.
37:42Yeah.
37:43Obviously plays into Richie's strength.
37:44But it'd be interesting to see if he builds on the feedback because a lot of his tailoring
37:48has felt quite menswear, quite boxy, less of a fitted silhouette.
37:52Love that.
37:53Love that.
37:54Yeah.
37:55That kind of shaping in there.
37:56Yeah.
37:57Make it more dramatic.
37:58More dramatic, innit?
37:59Let's just make it dramatic as possible.
38:00Like real copper cinch it in.
38:01Come on, designers, 30 minutes left!
38:02See, time just goes so wet.
38:03It's a bit of a sleepover I've not been invited to.
38:06What's going on here?
38:07I've transitioned from day to night.
38:09Get it?
38:10With time ticking, some of the designers are adding details to their collections, which
38:15they are hoping will help to meet the day to night brief.
38:19I have to make a channel for the drawstring that's going to pull everything in at the waist.
38:24I'm just putting a bit of rope through these channels that I've sewn to create that gathered
38:29effect.
38:30Get your belt loops on.
38:31Yeah.
38:32Because that'll look nice.
38:33Do you think?
38:34Banging.
38:35It's quite a lot of stuff to pull through quite a small space.
38:37It's just quite fiddly.
38:38I'm all fingers and thumbs like I can't get it through.
38:40I'm getting stressed.
38:41Designers!
38:42You've got just 10 minutes to go!
38:45Just chill.
38:47Honestly, I've had a mare.
38:49Can you hand it for me?
38:50Do you have time?
38:51Yeah, I'll do it.
38:52So I'm just going to get the buttons on.
38:53Oh, she's looking really chic now.
38:55Yeah.
38:56We've removed that excess.
38:57We're worried we might get critiques for no pockets.
39:00So what I'll do is I'll sew the channel back on and then I'll just tighten on the waist.
39:04Right, should we start getting a dress?
39:05Designers!
39:06Is that what you're doing?
39:07Yeah.
39:08You've got one minute!
39:10Oh, my God.
39:11That's it!
39:12That slipped on.
39:14Go ahead.
39:15Door start panicking.
39:16But I can see a naked mannequin.
39:17Ooh!
39:18Droopy drawers.
39:20Girl.
39:21Are they some nice trousers?
39:23It's fine.
39:24Collin looks gorgeous.
39:25She's nice, isn't she?
39:26Next girl.
39:27Can't go wrong.
39:28Should we do the pussy bow at the front?
39:30Oh, I'll eat that.
39:31I'll do a bow.
39:32Yeah.
39:33I hope we live to see another day.
39:35All right, designers!
39:36Five, four, three, two, one!
39:41There you go!
39:42Well done, gang!
39:43Love ya.
39:44We did it.
39:45Yeah!
39:46Super happy.
39:47I think the black colour palette works well.
39:49Me and Julia, dream team, smashed it.
39:53Honestly.
39:54Incredible.
39:55Oh, my God.
39:56Incredible.
39:57I felt really ferocious today to kind of chase a win.
40:00I just hope there's some good responses from everyone.
40:04Don't worry.
40:05I think it hits the brief completely.
40:07Because it's understated enough that the average M&S customer will be happy to wear it.
40:11And I feel like it looks expensive enough that they can feel luxurious and glamorous in it.
40:19OK.
40:20Experts Maddie and Frankie have examined the designs.
40:24This is nerve-wracking, isn't it?
40:25It's judgement time.
40:26It's no time to unleash the M&S customers and find out their thoughts.
40:31I hope that the customers love it.
40:33And I think we've really created the collection that speaks for itself.
40:37You ready, KC?
40:38I really like it.
40:40I love the ruching detail on the leg.
40:43That's a lovely different option that you don't normally get.
40:46I love in the trailers.
40:47I think a wide-legged chalzer is a good go-to.
40:50It really is.
40:51Yeah.
40:52And the shape of the neckline and the appell as well.
40:54It's fresh and different.
40:55Jeez.
40:56Come on.
40:57I can see on the mannequin as you enter the store.
40:59I'm pleased with that overall.
41:00Yes.
41:01I definitely love the top.
41:03I love the way there's, like, a scarf bit.
41:06You've got this lovely belt that actually she has it up.
41:10So you can take that off in the daytime with just a normal belt on it,
41:13just with some pumps.
41:14And then in the evening, have your heels.
41:16So it's interesting that she said she'd wear it in the daytime.
41:19Yeah, she did.
41:20Because it feels more evening to us, doesn't it?
41:22Yeah.
41:23It hasn't got pockets.
41:24That's something I don't...
41:26I always do like a bit of a pocket.
41:28I'm not a big fan of black colour, so...
41:30More like an evening wear.
41:32Fair enough.
41:33I can't really say more than that.
41:35You could make it in a different colour.
41:36Absolutely.
41:40I haven't taken my eyes off a bit since I walked in the room.
41:42It's so nice.
41:44The colour, the fact that it's angled and not in the centre,
41:47I think, is what gives it the statement.
41:49Well, thank God she changed it.
41:50Yeah.
41:51Yeah.
41:52And then you have the wide leg as well.
41:54Oh, I just, I'm in love with it.
41:56I would wear this.
41:57I'm really happy with the trousers.
41:59I think you could do it, though.
42:01Yeah.
42:02They definitely followed the brief.
42:04They're having it during the day and to the evening.
42:06It's wonderful.
42:07Love it.
42:08Oh, they're both very taken by this one.
42:12But I have one concern.
42:14I just feel it might be a bit restricting around the boob area.
42:18Just of the way that the buttons are falling.
42:21But love the pants, love the colour.
42:23I'm so happy.
42:24Yeah.
42:25I'm so happy.
42:26I'm really happy as well.
42:28There's my jacket.
42:29Please say you love the jacket, please.
42:31Yeah.
42:32And the dress, obviously.
42:33The dress itself, it is very office-like.
42:35It's just one block colour.
42:36So I think, for me, I would just add more accessories
42:39to bring it out in the night time.
42:40It's very, like, flowy, very free, very bright.
42:44If it was going to be, like, into the evening,
42:46I would like something a little bit more fitted.
42:48I mean, the shape of the dress is actually so nice.
42:50So I think you should be very proud.
42:53The jacket is beautiful, but I just don't think it hits the brief.
42:55It's too daytime for me.
42:57It probably means more day than the rest of them.
43:00Well, I think you can wear it in the evening, so I think, whatever.
43:03Yeah.
43:07Taking on board the customer's views,
43:09the experts must now decide who is still in the running
43:12for the Dream Design Mentorship
43:14and who isn't M&S material.
43:18Let's talk about the day that's just been.
43:21Who has impressed you the most, Maddy?
43:24The standout has to be Alex for me.
43:28She's just consistently delivering.
43:30And she led the team today.
43:32She led Laura.
43:33Yeah.
43:34And did you like that collection?
43:35I would definitely wear that outfit.
43:37Really?
43:38I loved it.
43:39Yeah, I loved it.
43:40It was pretty seamless.
43:41Yeah.
43:42Well, actually, I think you'll find there were lots of seams in there,
43:44but they were executed very well.
43:45Frankie, who's impressed you the most?
43:47I really liked Casey.
43:48Mm.
43:49I really loved her jacket.
43:50Casey definitely feels like she's kind of blossoming.
43:53Yeah.
43:54And growing.
43:55Okay.
43:56So who is in danger of leaving the competition tonight?
44:00We love Daniel's personality, but he just doesn't get that balance
44:03between, you know, his own personal style, that statement piece,
44:07and really bringing a commercial lens to it.
44:10Anybody else?
44:11For me, Julia's definitely one of them.
44:14I know, I'm sorry, but I just worry she's not got that kind of
44:19contemporary, modern design edge that she's bringing to her
44:23kind of creations.
44:24Mm.
44:25Yeah.
44:26Sounds like you've got a tough decision on your hands.
44:28We do.
44:29Yeah, we do.
44:32Well done, designers.
44:33Another collection challenge in the bag.
44:36A bag for life, of course.
44:40We can now reveal the team with the must-have collection.
44:43And safely, through to next week, is...
44:53Alex's team!
44:54Yay!
44:59Well done, Alex.
45:00Well done, Laura.
45:01Excellent stuff.
45:02Without doubt, stand out peace.
45:04I think it's so beautiful.
45:06Laura, she's been incredible.
45:07Yeah, I couldn't be prouder.
45:09I think nailed the brief, and we all loved it too.
45:12So, excellent.
45:13Well done.
45:14Brilliant.
45:15Now for the hard bit.
45:16Sadly, we have to say goodbye to a designer from one of the remaining teams.
45:28This person has shown consistent technical ability, but our experts would have loved to see a little bit more creative flow.
45:38The designer leaving the competition is...
45:40Julia.
45:41Yeah, I thought so.
45:42I'm so sorry!
45:43You know, I've had a fabulous team.
45:44Oh, Julia.
45:45Oh, my God.
45:46Oh, Jesus.
45:47You're good.
45:48Oh, my God.
45:49Oh, my God.
45:50Oh, my God.
45:51Oh, my God.
45:52Oh, my God.
45:53Oh, my God.
45:54Oh, my God.
45:55Oh, my God.
45:56Oh, my God.
45:57Oh, my God.
45:58Oh, my God.
45:59Oh, my God.
46:00Oh, my God.
46:01Oh, my God.
46:02Oh, my God.
46:03I'm heartbroken.
46:04You know what?
46:05I've had a fabulous team.
46:06We're going to miss you so much, Julia.
46:07I'm sorry.
46:08I'm only slightly disappointed.
46:09There's so much talent in that room, honestly.
46:11I have the technical ability, but I definitely don't have the creative flair like those guys.
46:16You know, I know you're all going to do great.
46:18Really.
46:19I think the judges have got a really hard job.
46:21I couldn't choose between one of these.
46:23Yeah, very.
46:24Fabulous.
46:25Very, very.
46:26Both as people and as designers.
46:27Oh.
46:28Even I'm willing.
46:29I'm so glad that you've had the best time.
46:33You need a hug.
46:34We need a hug.
46:35We need a hug.
46:36Bring it in, everyone.
46:37Yeah.
46:38Welcome.
