01:09:41It was starting to look as though we were going to have a decision that really could have gone either way,
01:09:46and just in an instant, it was Aaron Pryor just all over the three-title holder, Alexis Arguello.
01:09:53Let's take another look at just how it ended, right?
01:09:56Well, Aaron Pryor just came on strong.
01:09:57I don't know where he got the energy from.
01:09:59He hurt Arguello with that overhand right, and you see here, he just stayed on top of his man.
01:10:04But I felt Arguello could come back because he's a very defensive fighter,
01:10:08but it's just too many punches thrown by Aaron Pryor.
01:10:11That right hand did the most damage in that round.
01:10:15And that was just one of many, but again, you can't emphasize enough what an intelligent fight he fought.
01:10:19He came into this fight with a reputation just as a brawler, and he said,
01:10:22I'm just going to come at the guy, and I'm going to throw 100 punches around, and if 10 of them land, that's enough.
01:10:27Well, that right hand there, Barrett, and that second right hand was a punch that really did a number
01:10:31with a left hook that was partially blocked.
01:10:33And again, another overhand right by Pryor.
01:10:36Pryor, he's just a machine.
01:10:39Perpetual motion.
01:10:41But after watching the films of Aaron Pryor and seeing him over the years,
01:10:44I really, to be very honest with you, just thought of him as just a brawler.
01:10:47Well, he proved that he was much more than just a brawler and was more than a worthy champion.
01:10:52Well, now you can really see some of the punches, I mean, the power of Aaron Pryor.
01:10:56He gets inside, and he stays there.
01:10:58He did the right thing.
01:11:00These two guys, I really didn't expect this fight to go the distance, or at least 14 rounds.
01:11:05And Aaron Pryor shows so much will and determination and skill, if anything.
01:11:11So Aaron Pryor retaining his junior welterweight championship, and right now you kind of have to look and say,
01:11:14what's next for this guy?
01:11:16Does he step up?
01:11:16Does he go down?
01:11:17He really can fight either as a welterweight or as a lightweight,
01:11:20and maybe is even more effective as a lightweight.
01:11:22Well, we see here that we're impressed with good reason.
01:11:26Aaron Pryor defending his championship here, and again, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that he was the champion.
01:11:34It was Alexis Arguello who was the challenger.
01:11:38Pryor coming into this, and I think he just did so much for his career and his credibility as a boxer tonight
01:11:44because, as we mentioned, the reputation was banger, period.
01:11:48A guy who could just go in there and knock the man out or be knocked out himself,
01:11:52even though he'd never come close to being knocked out.
01:11:54He had been knocked out tonight.
01:11:56Larry, I thought he was just a consummate professional.
01:11:59Well, it was a furious pace, and I think we've seen a great, great fight,
01:12:05a fight that we won't forget for a long time.
01:12:09Two professionals and champions digging down into themselves for everything they had.
01:12:15I thought that Arguello was fighting almost beyond himself
01:12:20given the fact that he's had 80 fights, that he's 30 years old, 20 championship fights.
01:12:26It was a furious pace, and the younger man was able to sustain it.
01:12:31They're trying to get Aaron Pryor out of the ring just above us now,
01:12:35and still there's a lot of pandemonium going on here.
01:12:37But Pryor, the champion, leaves.
01:12:42Incidentally, we talked earlier about a fight for Boom Boom Mancini.
01:12:48A fight between Mancini and Pryor will be a giant.
01:12:53For about four rounds.
01:12:54For the championship of Ohio and the rest of the civilized world.
01:12:58He said he would like to fight him.
01:12:59Of course, another guy in an up-and-coming fight over the name of Johnny Bumpus
01:13:02sort of looms in Aaron Pryor's future, too.
01:13:06I can't see Johnny Bumpus giving Aaron Pryor anywhere near the kind of battle
01:13:11that he got from this great professional Alex Aguayo tonight.
01:13:16And the effort that Aguayo gave is manifest in the fact that when he went out,
01:13:23it was like it was all over.
01:13:27He is still there and hurt.
01:13:28What does he do now, as you see it, the fellow sitting between you and I
01:13:33has given up the Welderweight title.
01:13:35That's a vacant title right now.
01:13:36Does he look to that just because of the credibility of Welderweight
01:13:39as opposed to Junior Welderweight?
01:13:40Well, he's still a lightweight champion
01:13:42and still recognizes the best lightweight in the world.
01:13:46He's talked about retiring after making a lot of money.
01:13:50You know, much of his property was confiscated
01:13:52after the revolution in Nicaragua.
01:13:55So it's conceivable that he would go back and fight Mancini.
01:14:00He could make money if that's what the object is, I'm sure.
01:14:05He's absolutely crestfallen over the fact that he made this effort
01:14:08to win a fourth title and came up just short.
01:14:13You know, he's a boxing history buff who has got voluminous records
01:14:17and watches film and has his ideas about who the greatest fighters were
01:14:22in every division and so that he was making his, you know,
01:14:27final statement as a great athlete here tonight.
01:14:31And I don't think he's got anything to be ashamed of, of course.
01:14:34He just came up against a younger, stronger, more enthusiastic fellow.
01:14:40You know, the other thing that strikes me, too,
01:14:42and he ended his conversation with you by saying,
01:14:44I want to go over and talk to the champion now.
01:14:46And I guess, Ray, there is just a born respect between boxing champions.
01:14:50And you saw it tonight. You saw it with you and Tommy Ernst.
01:14:53Well, as a matter of fact, I'm quite sure that Aguero,
01:14:56I mean, he has nothing to be ashamed of.
01:14:57And there is still respect between both champions.
01:15:00And I'm really, you know, I think words cannot describe, I mean,
01:15:04the way how much I'm impressed with both fighters.
01:15:07I mean, Pryor, I think what he should do now
01:15:09is go and soak up all the recognition he can
01:15:11because he deserves everything now.
01:15:13This fight with Aguero brought out the true Aaron Pryor.
01:15:16Well, we talked about hungry fighters,
01:15:18and I don't think there's any question but that virtually from the day
01:15:21he lost to Howard Davis in the 1976 Olympic trials,
01:15:24he has been a hungry fighter. Larry?
01:15:26Incidentally, Pryor was ahead on two of the three officials' cards
01:15:30by two and three points, which more or less jibed with my card.
01:15:36Of course, if that last round would have gone the distance,
01:15:39it would have been a two-point round for Pryor.
01:15:42So, he was going to win the fight one way or another,
01:15:46but he made it rather decisive.
01:15:48Panama Lewis, of course, told him he had to win the last two rounds.
01:15:50Talk about winning it.
01:15:51He won the last round real big, and the last one was the 14th.
01:15:54And, of course, that should stir up some memories for you, Ray.
01:15:58The 14th round, much as Holmes did when he had too late in the fight against Cooney,
01:16:03much as you did against Hearns,
01:16:05somebody had a little bit more to give at the end.
01:16:09And that's what it takes.
01:16:10I don't think there's any question about it,
01:16:12and it was Aaron Pryor who was dug down perhaps
01:16:14just a little bit deeper than did Alexis Arguello.
01:16:18Neither man has to hide his head.
01:16:19He really was not a loser.
