00:00Hello it's Martin Dempster the Scotsman Golf Correspondent here coming to you from Bethpage
00:08Black at the end of the opening day in the 45th Ryder Cup and it's advantage Team Europe after
00:19the opening two sessions here on Long Island. Luke Donald's team won the opening foursome
00:28sessions 4-0 at Marco Salmoni in Rome two years ago and that provided the springboard as they
00:37went on to regain the trophy with a 16 and a half, 11 and a half victory and they burst out of the
00:46blocks yet again in the alternate shot format. Winning 3-1 on this occasion they then added a
00:56two and a half, one and a half victory in the afternoon four balls as a result of which they
01:02lead by five and a half, two and a half heading into the second day. The difference really was
01:09that Donald's big guns all performed. John Rahm won both his matches as did Tommy Fleetwood who really
01:19has grown in stature since winning for the first time on US soil in the Tour Championship last month.
01:25Rory McIlroy meanwhile picked up one and a half points from two matches. In contrast world number
01:33one Scotty Scheffler lost both his matches. He's now sort of coming into a Tiger Woods category when it comes to
01:41team tournaments. Brilliant as an individual seems to be struggling in a team environment.
01:48And Bryson DeChambeau the live golf player who was really getting hyped up coming into this event
01:55he also suffered two defeats. That can be the difference in this event. You really need the top players
02:02to produce the goods and Donald will certainly be delighted with the way his team started.
02:12Bob McIntyre suffered a first Ryder Cup defeat. He was unbeaten in three games in Rome two years ago.
02:19Was out in the bottom foursomes match this morning with Victor Hovland. They got back from three down
02:25with eight holes to play against Patrick Cantley and Zasner Shoffley. However, McIntyre was disturbed by a
02:37shout from a fan in the stand behind the 17th green in the middle of his backswing. The tee shot stepped away
02:47and then didn't hit a very good shot when he pulled the trigger again and they lost by two holes in the end.
02:53However, no surprise that they've been sent out again by Donald for the Saturday foursomes and on this occasion
03:02they'll be up against Scheffler and Russell Henley. To keep up to date with everything about the 45th Ryder Cup
