Scotland name team for opening autumn Test against USA
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's Graeme Bean from The Scotsman, just back from Orium, where Gregor Townsend
00:06has named his team for the first of the Ottoman internationals against the USA.
00:11The match takes place at Murrayfield this Saturday. Townsend has selected a team of home-based
00:17players for this one because it falls outside the international window, so no access to
00:22its English and French-based players. So there's eight Glasgow players in the team, seven
00:27from Edinburgh, and the good news for Scotland is that Darcy Graeme and Doohan van de Merle
00:33both passed fit and will start on the wings. And for Doohan, it's a landmark occasion, it'll
00:40be his 50th Scotland cap, five years after his debut against Georgia, Scotland's record
00:46tri-scorer. And the other big news is there'll be potentially two new caps on Saturday. Liam
00:54McConnell starts the match, the young Edinburgh flanker, and Harry Morris, his teammate, is
01:00on the bench. He's a hooker, not played much rugby for Edinburgh this season, apart from
01:06pre-season games, but highly regarded by Gregor Townsend and should get his chance off the
01:13bench at some point on Saturday against the US. Other news for the team is that Jack Dempsey's
01:20back, it'll be his first Scotland match since the Six Nations. He got injured against Wales
01:24in the penultimate fixture in the Six Nations, a hamstring injury which ruled him out for the
01:30best part of six months. He then suffered a groin injury trying to make his comeback, but
01:34he's now fit again, has played for Glasgow and will start at number eight for Scotland on
01:39Saturday. The captain is Stafford McDowell. He'll partner Ollie Smith in the centre. Sione Tupilotu
01:50is setting this one out, but he will come in for the New Zealand game next weekend and captain
01:54Scotland for that one. Stafford McDowell will be assisted by two of his Glasgow Warriors teammates,
02:00Jamie Dobie and Scott Cummings, who have both been named as vice captains.
02:05And so the game kicks off at 5.40 on Saturday. The first of four games Scotland will play this
02:11autumn. So it's America first, then New Zealand, then Argentina and then Tonga. You can follow
02:18it all at the Scotsman website.
