00:00. . .
00:30. . .
00:32Why would you ever think that it's okay to take the life of somebody that you love?
00:38I'll never get it, ever.
00:40It's devastating.
00:41. .
00:42. .
01:00People like Erie because it has a lot to offer when it comes to the outdoors.
01:23. . .
01:25the beaches, the fishing, the lake.
01:27On a good, clear day, it's gorgeous.
01:34Then there's times where it can be rough, really rough, and everybody gets on edge.
01:42Karen and Christopher both had a love for water
01:48And I think that's what drew them together
01:51They enjoyed scuba diving, boating, fishing
01:56And when they moved to Erie, they made sure they were close to the lake
02:00Oh, what do you want this, Karen?
02:05Right here
02:06Of course, that would be the first thing you want to pass
02:17Karen, she was kind of a mom and dad's girl
02:22We're a family of 14, and Karen was the baby
02:27I love her
02:29Take care, sweetheart
02:35Thanks
02:37We are officially home
02:45When Chris and Karen met, she fell head over heels for him
02:51There was no other person in her life that she was going to spend it with other than Chris
02:57They fell in love young and moved in together right away
03:02It was about 10 years they lived together
03:05When they said they were going to get married
03:07Karen was so happy
03:10She was excited to start a future with him
03:13And he was excited to start a future with her
03:15Chris definitely wanted to support her
03:20And saw Lake Erie as an opportunity to make a life for her
03:24Christopher wanted to buy a commercial fishing boat, so he bought the doors then
03:33Income for commercial fishing, it can range anywhere between 50 to 300,000
03:43When he bought that boat, it was a big step for him and Karen professionally
03:48You feel like you're set for the rest of your life
03:50Now it feels like home
03:53Karen was a certified scuba diver
03:57People who were interested in scuba diving come to Lake Erie just because of the rich history
04:03That's involved in this lake
04:04There's a lot of shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Erie because Lake Erie has really strong currents
04:10The rougher that it is, the more difficult it is to scuba dive and check him out
04:17When the weather gets really bad out here, no diving without me
04:27You worry too much
04:29They were always doing things together
04:50There was never a time where they were really apart from each other
04:55Hey
05:18I thought we were sleeping in today
05:21Just one morning
05:23You know the early bird catches the worm
05:26Chris and Karen were definitely in a routine
05:31Chris would spend all his time at the marina
05:35And on the weekends, Karen would spend all her time down there with Chris
05:40To a lot of people, including Chris and Karen
05:45Making a living on the water would be a dream come true
05:48But be careful what you wish for
05:51What the water can give to you so quickly, it can also take it away from you
05:54Good to go, Cap
06:03Christopher worked hard
06:06He was consistent and faithful to his job
06:10Chris loved his money
06:28The more he made, the more he wanted
06:31He was never satisfied
06:33Chris and Karen built a good home for themselves
06:52But there was a lot of loneliness in that home for Karen
06:55She would sit there for 8, 10, 12 hours and wait for him
07:00How was your day?
07:10It was pretty good, I guess
07:14Chris was not always there completely
07:18Chris did his own thing and Karen would be there when Chris felt like it
07:24Good, you cooked
07:26What's for dinner?
07:27What's for dinner?
07:28Please don't tell me fish
07:30She was always just kind and considerate
07:36Even though the affection wasn't there
07:38I think you took advantage of her
07:41She'd do anything for that guy
07:43Go take a shower
07:50It kind of upset me, but I thought she loves him
07:54So I never said anything to her
07:57Because I didn't want to hurt her feelings
07:59Because she didn't want anybody to not like Christopher
08:02You've had enough work for today
08:09Go clean up
08:11You're alright
08:13Come on
08:15Chris was more distant than he should have been
08:26And I think that's the way he wanted it
08:29He never really seemed happy
08:32He always wanted something more
08:35I sometimes wonder if it might have bothered Christopher
08:39That Karen never wanted any children
08:41She said she didn't want to be tied down with kids
08:44They genuinely loved each other
08:48But down the road, something switched
08:52As the years went on
09:01He spent minimal time with Karen
09:03And in turn, that left Karen kind of off to be by herself
09:11Here, let me help you with that
09:17Oh, thanks
09:18Hey, can you give me a second
09:27I'll be right back
09:28We docked our boat down at their marina
09:33It was a place to hang out
09:35And there was a time where she had disappeared off into the restroom for 20 minutes
09:41And I can remember just sitting there thinking, maybe something's wrong
09:44Sorry about that
09:48Hey, are you alright?
09:51I'm not
09:51I'm just feeling a little off today, that's all
09:54So, after that, I just didn't think anything about it
09:59And I just kind of brushed it off
10:01Be careful out there
10:06Everyone has secrets
10:08And as we know, secrets don't say secrets forever
10:11I think scuba diving for Karen was just a way to escape
10:30She loved all the beautiful sounds and the sights
10:42Being under the water relaxed her
10:45That lake can turn pretty quickly
11:05It's dangerous given the different weather conditions that you can run into
11:11The currents always pose a threat
11:15But when that wind picks up
11:17You'll have to always have an escape route
11:1820th of May on ID
11:39Back at your regular spot, huh?
12:07You scared me
12:09The weather's turned
12:11It's far too rough out here, Karen
12:12We talked about this
12:13Yeah, we did
12:15It was Chris's way
12:17And only Chris's way
12:19And even if she wanted to complain
12:21Chris made it about him
12:23Fun's over for today
12:24I've got a long day tomorrow
12:27On the outside looking in
12:30He seems like a really normal guy
12:32But the thing is
12:35He had this huge secret
12:37That he was keeping
12:38There was something different
12:53With Chris's behavior
12:54Chris?
12:56Chris?
12:58Chris?
13:01Chris?
13:02What are you doing out here so late?
13:09Is it alright if I come on board?
13:23I don't know how much longer we're going to have with her
13:24Who, Chris?
13:27Karen
13:29She is really sick
13:33She's dying
13:35Chris told me that Karen was dying
13:43Which is kind of mind-blowing
13:46Chris began to confide in a lot of people
13:51His co-workers
13:53Karen's friends
13:55Her co-workers
13:56That Karen had cancer
13:58And was terminal
13:59When I heard
14:04I was just devastated
14:06She was my baby sister
14:09And I didn't want to lose her
14:10She was too young
14:12She was too young
14:12Too active
14:13Too happy
14:14Too
14:14Too everything
14:16I tried to contact her about it
14:21But I couldn't get through to her
14:23And I thought she was just scared
14:25Karen would never openly speak
14:29About having cancer
14:30A couple of her sisters
14:32A couple of her sisters
14:32Passed away
14:33From cancer
14:34So I just felt like
14:36Maybe she doesn't want to tell me
14:38Because it's that personal to her
14:40She would open up if she wanted to
14:43Hey there
14:52You're headed home early
14:54Yeah
14:55I've got to get home
14:57It's been a really rough morning
14:59I've got to take care of Karen
15:00Okay
15:02I think Chris was looking for sympathy
15:06He wanted to look like the doting husband
15:09And he had a way of making it about him
15:12I did feel bad for Chris
15:15But I also felt bad for Karen
15:17Because she was the one going through it
15:19You're home late
15:40Yeah
15:42Oh, uh, sorry
15:43It's been a long day
15:45Karen probably felt like
15:49He was staying away
15:50Because she was doing something wrong
15:52That's the way she was
15:54She probably blamed herself
15:55Bert's calling again
16:04Bert's calling again
16:07Do you want me to get it?
16:23I've got it
16:37You've been with them all day
16:44I believe Chris loved Karen
16:56But I feel as though Chris wasn't fulfilled with Karen
17:01Chris would tell people he couldn't have a physical relationship with his wife
17:07Because of this cancer diagnosis that she had
17:11I'm going out with the guys tonight
17:29Karen went through a dark period
17:36She was depressed
17:38And she had no one really to help her through that
17:42It must have been crushing to her
17:45The LeClairs had several guns in their house
17:53Karen specifically owned her own gun
17:57Chris had mentioned to my fiance that he was concerned that she was going to ultimately commit suicide
18:23But you never know what goes on behind closed doors
18:32Christopher was good at keeping secrets
18:40None of us knew his little secret life
18:43I was in love with him
18:52I wanted a future with him
18:54I was all in
19:13Are you ready for this?
19:21I hope so
19:22I met Chris through a friend
19:26We really hit it off
19:28Chris was very charming, very successful
19:30He had goals in life
19:33He didn't want to just sit around and do nothing
19:36And that all matters
19:39I love it out here on the lake
19:42I just kind of figured
19:44Why not just buy a boat?
19:48My first impression was that he's arrogant
19:51But he won me over eventually
19:53She was very taken with him
19:58She was a single mom
19:59Had two young boys
20:02And he showed her a lot of attention
20:06I gotta tell you something
20:12He was telling me that he was married
20:16But he was not with his wife
20:21She didn't even live in the house
20:23Chris told Tracy that he wasn't in love with Karen
20:28But the spark was there with Tracy
20:30And that's where he wanted his future to be
20:32I can't say that it felt wrong
20:35He's telling me that his marriage is over
20:40And when one door closes
20:43Another one opens
20:44I worked on the doors a lot
20:58I was on that boat almost every day
21:01Good to go, Cap
21:03As time progressed
21:06I did fall in love with him
21:10Yes, I did
21:10Hey, workday's over, boss
21:29Oh, is that right?
21:31Yep
21:32So why are we slowing down?
21:35We already checked all the nets
21:37Chris
21:54Chris, where are you?
22:02So funny
22:03Day's not over till I say it is
22:14Oh, I thought you went overboard
22:15I was just dropping the anchor
22:17We're not going anywhere
22:19Yet
22:33He swore up and down
22:38That he'd never get back with his wife
22:40And I trusted him wholeheartedly
22:42They ended up getting really serious
22:46And talking about how they would take their relationship
22:48To the next level
22:49I don't introduce my children to anybody
23:07So it took a long time
23:09Chris didn't meet my kids for three years
23:12And he was the first man
23:14That ever really was in my children's life
23:16You sure you have time for the beach?
23:21Absolutely
23:21Y'all ready?
23:23Let's go
23:23Let's go
23:24Let's go
23:24Let's go
23:25Let's go
23:26Let's go
23:30Let's go
23:31Let's go
23:33Let's go
23:36Let's go
23:37Let's go
23:38Let's go
23:39I felt like our relationship
23:59Was going in the right direction
24:00Going by what he said
24:06We would one day be married
24:08And building our lives together
24:10But three years into our relationship
24:15He broke down crying to me
24:17In the middle of my living room
24:18He told me Karen was diagnosed with cancer
24:24That was his reason for not getting a divorce
24:28It's okay
24:30I'll be here, Chris
24:32Christopher told each of them
24:35Enough lies to keep his double life going
24:37How could Karen not know?
24:41Because she trusted him
24:42She trusted Christopher with all her heart
24:45He thought he could get away with it
25:04Because he always had an answer for things
25:06But he couldn't keep it up anymore
25:11How could you keep people that close to you
25:19When you're lying about who you're spending your time with
25:22You can't really be 100% anywhere
25:24When you're 25% everywhere
25:26Tracy
25:41You sent me an email
25:43This says I love you
25:45So I emailed them back
25:47I love you too
25:48They had a joint email account
25:53I can't imagine it felt too good for her
25:57I mean, that was her husband
26:00She loved him
26:00Karen knew the lady worked with him on the boat
26:11But she didn't know he was having an affair with her
26:13All that he had put her through
26:16I can't even fathom the emotional impact
26:19That that would have on Karen
26:20Who's still trying to make this marriage work
26:22Karen was able to find Tracy's house
26:32People do crazy things when they feel broken
26:39Especially when you feel broken
26:42Especially when you feel broken
26:42By the person who you trust
26:43The person who you love
26:44You can really go off the wagon
26:48At the time that Karen found out about the affair
26:54Her heart was broken
26:56But Chris was everything to her
27:05She would have done anything
27:08To just make things be like they were
27:12In Chris' mind
27:18Karen was never going to leave him
27:19Chris was so confident
27:22In his power to control things
27:25But he just could not keep up with the lies
27:29And they just started to unravel
27:30We all started to question
27:34If in fact she had cancer
27:36Or if Chris was lying
27:37At this point I was at my wit's end
27:40I absolutely second guessed a lot of things
27:44You're not coming around
27:46You're taking forever to respond to a text
27:48You're not answering your phone
27:50There's something going on here, Chris
27:52She was not only suspicious
27:57But she was frustrated
27:58And she was tired of all these promises
28:00Don't walk away from me, Trace
28:04I was questioning whether he was lying
28:07About her having cancer
28:08So I didn't think the marriage was as over
28:11As he was saying it was
28:13Look
28:14I only love one woman
28:18You
28:20No, we can't do this anymore
28:25I can't
28:27I told him that
28:29You have got to make a choice
28:31I gave him until June 10th
28:33When my children got out of school
28:34You're going to choose her
28:36You're going to choose me
28:37You're going to do it by this time
28:39Or it's done deal
28:40Wow
28:51You're up early
28:53Yeah
28:55I thought we'd spend today together
28:57Um
28:59Yeah
29:01I could use some help with the nets
29:04I guess
29:05Yeah
29:07Sounds good
29:09Chris and Karen decide to go out onto the lake
29:21She's still in love with Chris
29:23But I think finding out that your husband of all these years
29:26Is having an affair really did affect her
29:29That's right
29:34Jane
29:35I've been going to die
29:37There's a Education
29:38But I don't remember
29:39You have to come to her
29:40I think it'd be a new
29:40These days
29:41They just want to leave
29:49Both
29:50One
29:51Two
29:52Two
29:52One
29:53Three
29:54Three
29:55Two
29:56Three
29:57One
29:57Two
29:57Three
29:58Two
29:59Eu vi Kirste e Karen
30:14out on their boat
30:15prior to this
30:16and there was
30:17something different
30:18about Karen
30:19Maybe she
30:22got the strength
30:23to stick up
30:24for herself
30:25and not put up
30:27with his lies
30:29and the deception
30:30Let me get
30:39these nets back
30:39here
30:40Pull those nets
30:47over there
30:48will you?
30:54That was Karen's
30:55day with her
30:56husband
30:56her husband
30:58and that she
30:58has stood by
30:59for all these
31:00years
31:00No Tracy
31:01No distractions
31:03She had plans
31:07on being with him
31:08for the rest
31:09of her life
31:10but she didn't have
31:13plans on sharing
31:13Christopher
31:14What's the matter
31:21with you?
31:22All vessels, all vessels
31:37This is United States Coast Guard
31:40Station Erie
31:41We have a report
31:41of a man overboard
31:42off Presque Isle
31:43Repeat, there's a man overboard
32:03It's my wife
32:05She's just gone
32:06Chris told the coast guard
32:10Karen wasn't feeling well
32:12and the fumes
32:13from the boat
32:14were making her sick
32:15She was leaning
32:16against the railing
32:18and he looks back
32:20and she's gone
32:21Karen LeClaire
32:24is a missing person
32:25She's fallen off
32:26the back of her husband's boat
32:28and it's not only
32:29a community effort
32:30to find her
32:30but it's a coast guard
32:31effort to find her
32:32The weather was
32:36extremely bad
32:37for boating
32:38because there were
32:39four or five foot waves
32:40that day
32:41There's not a lot of time
32:45that even a good swimmer
32:47can survive
32:48treading water
32:49even in the summertime
32:50I get a call from Chris
32:54and he was so distraught
32:57he told me
32:59that was my wife
32:59that went overboard
33:00I was shocked
33:02Chris had been
33:07to the coast guard station
33:08to try to help find her
33:11He had all these maps
33:13he's pointing to different areas
33:15where she may be
33:16After 30 hours
33:20they informed him
33:21that they were going to have
33:22to call off the search
33:23because there's no way
33:23that anybody could have survived
33:24for that length of time
33:25I was devastated
33:30My brother called me
33:32and told me
33:33that Karen was gone
33:34I naturally thought
33:37of the cancer
33:38but when I found out
33:41how she did die
33:42to picture her in the lake
33:45just
33:46It was just awful
33:51Knowing that Karen was missing
33:57every time we were on the lake
33:58we were looking
33:59for something
34:00a clue
34:01anything
34:02nobody found anything
34:04that still haunts me
34:07to this day
34:07as much as the
34:10it was
34:11were
34:12of the
34:19around the lake
34:22of the sea
34:23of the lake
34:24of the sea
34:25in the sea
34:26than the sea
34:26that's not
34:26it's a good
34:28to be
34:28to be
34:29to the sea
34:29and he's
34:30that's a good
34:30to keep
34:30the water
34:31I mean
34:31that's a good
34:32the sea
34:32and he'll
34:33that's a good
34:33that's a good
34:34A whole community was completely in shock.
34:42Everyone in Erie remembers what happened in the Karen LeClaire case on July 4th.
34:48The absolute last thing you could possibly expect from start to finish.
35:04July 4th was the big break in the case.
35:2551-year-old Karen LeClaire's body surfaced in Dunkirk, New York on July 4th of 2017.
35:30An Erie County judge describes the murder as not only deprived, but the most calculated and sophisticated he's ever seen.
35:41We received a call that Karen's body had been taken out of the water.
35:47There were ropes tied around the body and attached to a very large anchor.
35:53To disregard her body like that, that was just the ultimate injustice to her.
35:59So it was really hard. It was chilling.
36:04At the time of the autopsy, the Erie County medical examiners found a bullet hole in her right temple.
36:11Not only did Karen not fall off the boat that day, but we know that she was killed and that someone really wanted to make sure that no one would find out.
36:25On June 11th, the surveillance video showed Chris going to his boat by himself.
36:40They don't see anyone else get on that boat.
36:43And the distress call comes a few hours later.
36:48At that point, the question is, where's Karen?
36:51When was the last time we could say that she was seen alive?
36:53You see the two of them walking up to their boat, the Doris M.
37:07It looks like a normal married couple enjoying their Saturday.
37:11They get on the boat and they set out for a day on the water.
37:14About six hours later, surveillance shows that boat coming back to the Port Authority basin.
37:22And then you see only one person get off of that boat.
37:28Christopher LeClaire.
37:29Chris's double life was in jeopardy.
37:46That Friday was Tracy's children's last day of school.
37:50So Tracy's ultimatum was coming to a head.
37:53He knew he had to do something dramatic.
37:59Christopher and Karen, they go towards the area where Christopher does have nets
38:04and where they have been left unattended for several weeks.
38:11What's the matter with you?
38:12Karen would do anything to save her marriage.
38:31She probably just planned on just saying, Christopher, we need to talk.
38:37I need to know about this affair.
38:57I can't imagine being out there.
38:59The fear that would go through your body.
39:02Now when you have no place to go, there's nowhere to run, and this is it for you.
39:08He just walked up and shot her.
39:28And I still can't believe how you could do something like that.
39:32He takes one of the several anchors that he has on board the boat.
39:45He ties Karen to that.
39:49And he unceremoniously dumps her into Lake Erie.
39:53All the while, he was texting Tracy about that evening.
40:18He would text her about taking a bath together.
40:20It was very hard to comprehend the level of depravity.
40:38I chose you.
40:42He made a choice.
40:45And the choice cost Karen her life.
40:46When Karen's body was found, that's when I knew that everything that he had said was a lie.
41:00And that everything I knew and loved had now come to an end.
41:12It's just, it's devastating.
41:16It plays on your conscience when you give somebody that kind of an ultimatum and this is the end.
41:21I feel like I played a part.
41:23Did you really love me?
41:30Did you really love her?
41:33You did all of this.
41:35You brought all of this upon yourself.
41:39And you're going to rot in hell for it.
41:4148-year-old Christopher LeClaire was arrested Tuesday night, charged with criminal homicide after reporting his wife missing on Lake Erie.
41:50It's hard to say how long Christopher had this in his head.
41:54He certainly appeared to have been laying the foundation for years that Karen would die of cancer.
42:00I really do wish I could have talked to her about the cancer.
42:07Karen wasn't battling cancer.
42:09She was battling her husband and his affair.
42:15It was all complete fabrication.
42:18It finally took the autopsy to confirm that there was never cancer there.
42:26Chris's lies did not end.
42:28They just amplified even more.
42:32When he was arrested, he wrote letters to his sister, to his mistress, to his friends.
42:44Each one of them tells a different fantastical version of events.
42:48Each one of them can be easily disproven by the physical evidence in the case.
42:54He would say that she shot herself.
42:56And also, she wouldn't want anybody to know that she had committed suicide.
43:04So he decides the only thing left to do is just tie the anchor to her.
43:09And let her have her final rest at the bottom of Lake Erie in a very dramatic fashion.
43:13And when you read those letters, he lays it out in great detail.
43:20And I think he was arrogant enough to assume that was going to help him.
43:24The story he told about her committing suicide was ridiculous.
43:29There's just no way she would do anything like that.
43:31After he had taken her dignity, her respect, her love, and just tossed it out, the jury didn't believe his lies.
43:40And gave her at least the justice she deserved.
43:46That gave me a lot of closure, but it didn't bring Karen back.
44:01I don't know if the pain will ever get better, because I just, I wish we could have all had time to say goodbye.
44:13When I found out what Chris had done, I was devastated.
44:25Karen's life was taken by someone that she loved the most.
44:31That she would have done anything for.
44:34It still blows my mind to this day.
44:37I think it always will.
44:38I don't know if she would have done anything right now.
45:05I know my daughter
45:05But her heart kept running with her support.
