‘There’s so much pressure on kids’: do young people have it harder than we did?

We’re asking people in Newport if they think that the modern world is more difficult for young people than it was back in the day.

00:00Obviously the social pressures and things like that in today's world are going to be

00:03very different than they were when I was growing up in the 80s, but there were still difficulties,

00:09there were hard economic times back then.

00:12Nowadays it's more difficult because you know there's so much pressure on them, like

00:17they feel I need to have this, like in our days you know you can just play with sand and just

00:24you know, but now kids want to have tablet, they want this, they want that, they want game,

00:30they want so many things now, so I would say it's difficult now.

00:34The kids are playing the games in their bedrooms and they're not getting out into the fresh air,

00:40so I think that is affecting them in the way they communicate with people as well and that they

00:47only tend to link with people of their own age and that know those interpersonal skills that we need

00:53as we go out to the workplace. That might be suffering as well.
