A quarter of Welsh schoolchildren have tried vaping

Public Health Wales have given their backing to a proposed bill to help curb the amount of young people vaping, which has seen a dramatic rise over the last few years. It’s estimated almost 1 in 6 year 11 students vape regularly and the health authority wants to put an end to it.

00:00Vaping has become a serious problem for schools all across the country, with more and more

00:05young people having tried vapes, and a dramatic rise in the amount of children who vape regularly.

00:11According to recent data from Public Health Wales, roughly 1 in 6 Year 11 pupils now vapes

00:16regularly and as many as a quarter have tried vaping across all year groups. Both of those

00:21numbers are higher than ever before, and new legislation being proposed by the UK government

00:26is aimed at bringing that number down. Public Health Wales backs the legislation, which

00:30includes banning anyone born after January 1st 2009 from ever buying tobacco products,

00:36bringing vaping packaging in line with smoking, and giving greater powers over enforcement

00:40and sales of vaping products. A spokesperson for Public Health Wales says that more children

00:45are struggling with nicotine dependency, and it is now a once-in-a-generation opportunity

00:50to pass important, life-saving legislation. The Welsh government are hoping to ban single-use

00:55vapes along with the UK and other devolved governments.
