The birth rate across Wales, like the rest of the UK has been dropping for decades, so we’re asking people around Cardiff why they think that is. Is it the cost of raising children or the responsibility and apparent lack of freedom that comes with it?

00:00To be fair, probably things are going up, aren't they? Inflation.
00:04Yeah, I think things are going up and people aren't happy about that.
00:08It is getting harder. It's a year in scale one, definitely.
00:12I think it's like £127,000 or something like that over the course of between birth and 18.
00:18The cost of living and stuff like that is a massive thing,
00:21but then you've also got general happiness, you know?
00:24There's lots of depression because people are struggling,
00:26they're struggling with various different things.
00:28And the saying goes, happy eggs lay more hen. No, was it?
00:31Happy hens lay more eggs, innit? Yeah?
00:33So if people aren't happy, we're not going to be doing what we should be doing.
00:38I mean, I've got a 27-year-old and a 24-year-old,
00:42and I've got a five-year-old grandchild.
00:45And I think it's just the younger generations now are putting it off till they get into their late 20s,
00:5330s to that sort of family because they want to enjoy life.
00:57And I'll be honest, don't blame them.
