00:00The following commercial originally aired in the fall of 1969.
00:05Pay close attention, as there will be a test.
00:10So from the bottom of the line to the top, they all could be Dodge material.
00:30You belong in Dodge. You belong in Dodge. Now the seventies have begun. Time to tell it to everyone.
00:42You belong in the dashing Dodge. It's the one thing to know. When you're ready to go. When you're ready to go. When you want a performance star.
00:55Watch you see the performance star. You belong in a mover. You belong in a mover. You belong in a mover.
01:03You belong in a mover that's Dodge. You belong in a Dodge. You belong in a Dodge.
01:18Oh, give me a home. Where the things follow wrong. Where the deer and the antelope play.
01:37If you didn't have Mark Orman, you'd have to invent him.
01:40How did I get here?
01:42And the skies are not cloudy all day.
01:54I have no idea why my dad is crazy.
01:56It's not easy to make you ever want to hear.
02:02Mark hates everybody. He always has.
02:04He always has.
02:28They're coming to get you, Barbara.
02:30Are we ready?
02:38I'm ready.
02:39Okay.
02:40Let's do this.
02:41So what we're going to do first is we're going to roll the rear springs down.
02:46So we can position the shock mounts in the body here.
02:50Okay.
02:51Spring perches to be correct.
02:53Okay.
02:54So if you want to roll your side.
02:55Can we go a little closer?
02:56Yep.
02:57Perfect.
02:58Did you get them through there?
02:59Yep.
03:00The nuts are on the hoist there.
03:01Okay.
03:02If you want to start those.
03:03Go ahead and start them.
03:04Yep.
03:05So for those of you who are either new to the show or long time viewers.
03:09This 69 Roadrunner came to us as a 383 car.
03:13A 383 automatic.
03:15The owner of the car now inherited it from his friend who passed away.
03:20His name is Scott Draper.
03:21Scott sent the car out here because he wanted it done right.
03:25Number one.
03:26Number two is he wanted it converted over to look like an A12 car.
03:29Which is going to be your 446 barrel in this particular case.
03:33He didn't care so much about it being a four speed or the Dana rear end.
03:36But he is going to want the lift off hood for it.
03:39We had Scott out on the show a few years ago.
03:42And he told the story and it's really, it's a very endearing story.
03:46And this is kind of part of the fabric of graveyard cars.
03:50My name is Scott Draper and I'm out here today at Mark's shop.
03:54Talking about my best friend in high school, 69 Roadrunner.
03:58He unfortunately passed away four years ago.
04:01And this was his car since high school.
04:04And a vision of his was someday to get it restored to the degree that he wanted it to be.
04:11And he was a perfectionist.
04:13That's why I sought out this shop to make his dream come true.
04:19Yes, this car was an original 383 four speed car.
04:24I can't recall exactly how long that motor lasted.
04:27Steve did a lot of street racing back in the day.
04:29His vision was to make it a 440 six pack A12 car, tribute car.
04:36And pretty much had it assembled to that degree.
04:40It was a running car when I brought it out here, but it needed a lot of just perfectionism.
04:46When I was looking for a place to entrust the car with, I reached out to Mark and kind of gave him my story.
04:53He said, we'd love to take the car on.
04:55I understand it's a long process and there's a lot of things that have to be done.
05:00As you can see right now, it's in the disassembly stage and excited to be out here today from Iowa to check on it and talk to Mark about the scheduling of it moving forward.
05:13Now you see why this car has a lot of history to it, but there's more to it than that.
05:18Today, as we work on this car, I will reveal the crime of the century that was committed as a result of this car being here.
05:27And why Alyssa is having to work with Doug today under the given circumstances.
05:35So, stay tuned.
05:39Pretty easy. How's yours going on?
05:41Very good.
05:42Very good.
05:43I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad sign of what's to come.
05:47Are you ready?
05:48Yep.
05:49Grab mine.
05:55I don't know why my dad's so insistent on me working with Doug.
05:59Don't get me wrong, I love working with Doug.
06:01I just got a bunch of parts I need to put away and he's been hounding me to get that done.
06:04It's weird to me because it's just a 69 Roadrunner that originally was a 383 and we're putting a 440 in.
06:10I don't understand why I absolutely need to do this with Doug.
06:13However, I mean, knowing my dad, he's up to some evil plan.
06:16It's either that or maybe I'll learn something.
06:19Look at that.
06:21Beautiful.
06:22Pretty nice, huh?
06:23Yep.
06:25Right there?
06:27Yeah, I think that's good. Yep.
06:29Okay.
06:32Did I hear you say that my dad's gonna come help with the engine?
06:35I guess.
06:37Why? Is there nobody else?
06:39Well, yeah.
06:40We don't need him.
06:41He's a pain in the what?
06:43So there's no one else that could come in?
06:45Sure there is.
06:46He just wants to give us a hard time, that's all.
06:48Oh my gosh.
06:49Right?
06:50So at least he's gonna be running the forklift.
06:53Right.
06:54It'd be worse if he was actually under here with us, I think.
06:56Well, at least if he's on the forklift, he's kinda out of our hair a little bit, right?
07:00Yeah.
07:01I am with Alyssa on this one.
07:03I believe Mark is up to something.
07:05Why?
07:06Mark is always up to something.
07:08What are you doing, kangaroo?
07:11Crackle!
07:12Oh no.
07:13She can't guard chasing me.
07:17For one, I don't need any help installing this drivetrain.
07:21I've installed dozens of them by myself.
07:23And two, when Mark is volunteering to drive the forklift, that just means he's insisting.
07:29And three, again, anybody can drive the forklift.
07:34Why is he volunteering?
07:36I guess he can be kinda helpful sometimes when he's out of our hair.
07:40As long as you don't need to be positive reinforcement, you should be good.
07:43Okay.
07:44Okay.
07:46Okay.
07:56So where's the kids at today, Alyssa?
07:58The girls are at school, and then my son's with my mom.
08:03Oh, nice.
08:04It's not ratcheting?
08:05Why is it not?
08:06Does she enjoy having him over?
08:07She comes over to my house to watch him.
08:08Uh-huh.
08:09But yeah.
08:10How are your grandkids?
08:11They're doing good.
08:12All eight of them.
08:13Jeez.
08:14It's so weird talking about my kids, because I have four now.
08:18And when we first started the show, I had just given birth to Emma.
08:21And that was almost 15 years ago.
08:24I don't know.
08:25Do you have some wipers or something?
08:27Yeah, I think my dad's a pretty good grandpa.
08:30I mean, he doesn't call her names yet.
08:32Waits until like, I don't know, four or five.
08:35It's just gonna actually comprehend what he's calling her.
08:37But right now, he just baby talks to her.
08:39It's really cute.
08:40And he's kinda scared to hold her still, but he talks to her and watches her from a distance.
08:46Are you getting hungry?
08:47Oh, I like your hands.
08:48I mean, I don't know if you guys recall.
08:49But back in the day when Emma used to come to the shop with me and my mom would help watch her, my dad actually woke her up from a nap so he could go show her the roadrunner bird on a roadrunner.
09:01And then I couldn't get her back to sleep.
09:03I'm on the phone and I turn around.
09:06There's my dad leaving with Emma and all of her blankets after it took me two hours to get her to go to sleep.
09:11Hey, you wanna see the roadrunner?
09:13Wanna see the pretty roadrunner bird?
09:16Look.
09:18Didn't ask me anything.
09:20Rule number one is not to wake a sleeping baby.
09:23So...
09:24Beep, beep.
09:28How tight do you want these right now?
09:29That's good enough.
09:30Okay.
09:31So now we can raise the car up and attach the shocks.
09:35Okay.
09:36This is the tricky part, right?
09:37We're halfway there.
09:38So the reason we use the pogo is because we're gonna attach one side at a time.
09:53Okay.
09:54Because if we lift the center, the car is just gonna tip forward.
09:58Oh!
09:59Okay.
10:00So we only do one side at a time.
10:01So sketchy.
10:02Yeah, it is.
10:03These car bodies are pretty light without the drive train in.
10:05Oh my gosh.
10:06And I'm standing right under it?
10:07What we do is...
10:11Okay.
10:12The shock is extending.
10:14Okay.
10:16So we'll take the nut and one washer off here.
10:20The other one stays on.
10:21Okay.
10:22So if you could raise that up just a little bit more, Alyssa.
10:27A little more?
10:28Perfect.
10:29There we go.
10:30Perfect.
10:31Right there.
10:32Put the washer.
10:34Perfect.
10:36You don't need an extension.
10:39Just like that.
10:40Perfect.
10:41So when we're installing the rear end, after we have the rear end bolted into place, we install the shocks one at a time.
10:48And the reason we do that is because the Hemi leaf springs have a lot of leaf springs.
10:53They're really stiff.
10:55And if we were to push this up in the middle, it would push the car right off the hoist.
11:00So we do one side at a time.
11:02We raise it up, attach the shock, lower it down, move the pogo to the other side, raise it up, attach the shock, take the pogo off.
11:10Then it's all bolted in place.
11:12So if this was a small block car with the lighter rear springs, we probably could lift it up right in the center, attach both shocks at the same time, and we'd be done.
11:24But not with the Hemi suspension, I promise you guys.
11:27See how common it is just me and you working together?
11:30Watch how quickly that's going to change when my dad enters the picture.
11:33Right.
11:34It's going to be just chaos for no reason.
11:50As tight as it'll go?
11:51That's good.
11:52Right there.
11:53I don't know why I had to give it one more.
11:55Yeah.
11:57You need your own tools at home, don't you?
11:59I do.
12:00Okay.
12:01Is that it?
12:02That's it.
12:03Pretty straightforward.
12:04The rear end's in.
12:05Great.
12:06So then what?
12:07We have to go grab my dad?
12:08I guess so.
12:09I guess we have to do that.
12:10Okay.
12:11Don't say I didn't warn you.
12:12We could have grabbed Brian.
12:13We could have grabbed Will.
12:14Is he still here?
12:15Like, really?
12:16My dad?
12:17Well, he's the boss, so I guess I'll go get your dad.
12:19Okay.
12:21It couldn't get worse.
12:25Coming up, Tony D'Agostino returns to Graveyard Cars to give us some of his hard-earned Mopar knowledge.
12:33So let's get into some of the finer details.
12:35Meanwhile, Mark enters the picture to torture, to help with a drivetrain install.
12:42But will Mark's family feuding end up compromising this delicate installation?
12:48Clear for takeoff.
12:49No, I don't want to talk like that.
12:51Find out when Graveyard Cars returns.
12:54I've been selling parts since 1979.
13:03And while you can look up some information about them online, you're not going to find everything.
13:07That's why I'm here.
13:08I'm Tony D'Agostino from Tony's Mopar Parts in Harrington, Delaware.
13:13Welcome to Tony's Tech Tips.
13:15We've got a number of markers here we're going to be going over.
13:29The information on these rivets, the letters here, and what these brackets are there for.
13:34So let's get into some of the finer details.
13:36Each rivet has three digits on it.
13:38The outer rivet, the first number is what we care about.
13:41That's a nine.
13:42That represents the year this was made, 1969.
13:45The other two digits aren't really important to us.
13:48They have to do with the internal plant information as far as the line it was on, the shift it was on.
13:53That's nothing that's going to concern us.
13:55This is important.
13:56This tells you the day of the year it was made.
13:59And in this case, it's 248.
14:02So the 248th day of 1969 is the day that this lower control arm was made and assembled.
14:10These numbers are important because you need to make sure that your control arm was made prior to your car's scheduled production date.
14:17Let's look at another control arm.
14:19The lower rivet tells you the day of the year that it was made.
14:23In this case, it says 073.
14:26And the outer rivet, the first digit is a nine.
14:29That's all we care about.
14:30This lower control arm was made on the 73rd day of 1969.
14:35And those dates need to be prior to your car's scheduled production date to be correct for it.
14:40Let's take a look at one more date code just to make sure you know it really well.
14:44Let's look at the outer rivet first.
14:46The first number is a four.
14:48So this is a 1974 production control arm, which is pretty late for us.
14:52And the date of the year it was made is 010.
14:57So the 10th day of 1974, this lower control arm was assembled.
15:02You would have to have a 1974 model car with this control arm to be right for it.
15:07And in this case, it's for an A body with a front sway bar.
15:11How do we know all that?
15:13Stay tuned.
15:14And after the break, I'll show you how.
15:16How do we know all that?
15:17In the original commercial we aired at the top of the show, which of the models featured the M-46 simulated quarter panel air scoops?
15:36air scoops? Was it A. Super B, B. Coronet RT, C. Dart Swinger, D. Dodge Charger, or E. None of the
15:48above? Stay tuned and find out after the break. Okay folks, how'd you do? Which of the 1970 Dodge
16:02model cars featured in the opening vintage commercial had simulated air scoops on the
16:07quarters? If you guessed Super B, you are wrong. While the Super B did offer M46 options on the 1969
16:16models, it was not an option or standard equipment in 1970. The Charger and Dart also did not offer a
16:24simulated scoop on the quarter panels. Therefore, the answer is Coronet RT. If you ever wondered why
16:32you don't see 1970 Coronet RTs without these scoops, it's because it was standard equipment.
16:40This Graveyard Cars trivia is brought to you by Tony's Mopar Parts. Still open despite what
16:47Mark said on national television.
16:55Okay everybody, green light go here. Before I fire up the machine, I just want to check and make
17:00sure microphones are all working. Doug, have you got a copy on this, sir? Yeah. Yes. Your name is Doug?
17:07Doug. And here we go, right on cue. Time to torture us with the new headsets.
17:19Just say yes please. Hi Mark, I have a copy of that. Okay, so the headsets. I've been using these
17:23headsets now for a few seasons in our driving footage. It's a safety precaution. You look a
17:28little silly in it, but it's a safety precaution. This allows me to tell those, no Mark, gentlemen and
17:35lady, not to do what they did last year. Do you remember what happened last year?
17:39They're going to hit that camera. They're going to hit that camera. What's he?
17:43In this particular case, it is payback for what I alluded to earlier, the crime of the century.
17:49This 69 Roadrunner was sent to me for restoration like I mentioned earlier. As a large part of Scott's
17:59down payment that was due, he handed me the keys, the title, to a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT with 600
18:09original miles on it. That car was stolen from me by my own flesh and blood. She conspired with will
18:15to take it out and to joyride it. She knew how I felt about it. It is the kind of a crime that doesn't
18:21just go away. There is no suitable penance for that. Today will be a portion of the penance and
18:28since we were working on that 69 Roadrunner, I thought, what better way to begin chiseling
18:34away at the payback for little Miss Alyssa Rose. Car thief, gone in 60 seconds.
18:41All right, everybody. With that, I'm going to do a fire up of the forklift. And in three,
18:49two, one, ignition.
18:56Can everybody still hear me do a quick audio check? Dougie, can you still hear me? You got
19:01a copy?
19:02I can hear you. Great. Alyssa?
19:04Yep.
19:04This is great.
19:05Still hear you.
19:06This is great.
19:06Yeah, this is wonderful.
19:07Okay.
19:14I'm going to... Doug, where'd you go? I don't get the headset devices. This is so awkward. I
19:21mean, we can hear each other fine without these things. I am going to raise the engine and the
19:26transmission by means of this forklift up. And then, um, sir, go ahead. No, see my what,
19:33hon?
19:33Nothing.
19:34No, microphone down.
19:36This seems like this is a lot of nonsense. Like, this should be easier.
19:39So you just want me to just ram this right through the firewall and just call it good for
19:43the day?
19:43I've done it a million times. Okay, look, this has gotten blown out of proportion for way
19:47too long. I did not steal a car. I borrowed it. I'm seriously so excited.
19:52Hey, don't wreck it.
19:53It smells new. In fact, this is Will's fault. I asked Will if I could drive it and he said
19:59yes.
20:00Hey, just the guy I was looking for. Okay.
20:03What's your plan?
20:05I really want to take the Challenger for a drive. And my dad said no. So, I mean, it's
20:12easier to say sorry later on and ask for permission, one of those type of things.
20:16Okay, you haven't even got the gate open.
20:18Okay, well, go. Come on.
20:19You've got to hurry.
20:20Okay, he's right here.
20:21It's a Hemi.
20:22He's right here?
20:22I know.
20:23He's right there.
20:24Okay, well.
20:25Then, if I don't, if I remember correctly, he opened the gate for me. He helped me out.
20:29Just go, I'll cover for...
20:30Will, what are you going to say? What are you going to...
20:32Then you ran to the store real quick because it's 100 degrees. You're thirsty.
20:35If he wants to get even with anybody, get even with Will. He's the devil.
20:39I'm going vertical. I'm going vertical.
20:44I'm going to stop when I believe it is... Okay, I'm going to stop when Dougie waves.
20:47Alyssa, what you got over there?
20:49I feel like that's way high.
20:50That's a little too high.
20:51You're going to have to see that.
20:52That's a little high. Thank you.
20:53That's why you're here. That's why you're wearing the headset, okay?
20:56You have the perfect angle to see that.
20:57You're not an AT&T operator.
20:59I have tortured Will for years over this.
21:02How many times? I mean, look at the things I do to Will.
21:04Go back and count them up. Holy cow.
21:06I've made him ride a minibike home in the rain.
21:09So I guess at the end of the day, I have to look at the bright side.
21:12I think it's good gas mileage.
21:14If I crash, I'm not going to go far to hit the ground.
21:19But I'm Will Scott from the number one painter here at Graveyard Cars.
21:23I have a reputation.
21:24I can't be going around town on a minibike.
21:26It looks ridiculous.
21:27Okay. That's some cool stuff, man.
21:30That's cool stuff.
21:32So I'm already all caught up with Will.
21:34He'll still have a few little zingers coming down the road.
21:36But this is about Alyssa.
21:39And you can't blame Will for something like that anyway.
21:41Can you?
21:42I mean, if Will told you to jump off a bridge,
21:44would you jump off of a bridge?
21:45No, you'd use your common sense.
21:47Lives aren't at stake.
21:49This isn't an order like Colonel Jessup gave the order in A Few Good Men.
21:54Did you order the tour, Red?
21:55I did the job you sent me to do.
21:57Did you order the tour, Red?
21:58You're going damn right I did.
22:00He says it's okay to take your dad's car.
22:01It's not okay to take your dad's car.
22:03That's what this is about.
22:05It's about revenge.
22:06Revenge is mine, saith the Lord.
22:10That's Romanians 1219.
22:13So, biblical.
22:14Mark likes to do this thing.
22:16He takes things out of context.
22:17He twists them and manipulates them.
22:19It could be a movie.
22:20It could be a book.
22:21Whatever it is.
22:22He's really fond of doing it with the Bible.
22:23He likes to take scripture and takes the verse and just completely just manipulates it.
22:29Takes it out of context and then uses it to support whatever it is and tells me, oh, well, you know, it's divine.
22:34God said it.
22:35It's the, you know, it's the word of God.
22:36Physician, heal thyself.
22:38Right?
22:39I don't want to get all biblical on everybody, but, oh, man.
22:44Luke 423.
22:46If you were passed in judgment, I believe the Bible's very clear about that.
22:49Filipinos 2.7.
22:50Judge not.
22:51Least ye be judged.
22:52There's a couple problems with that.
22:54Let there be light.
22:56Genesis chapter 1, verse 3.
22:59Biblical.
23:01So, to borrow a branch from Mark's tree, even the devil can cite scripture for his purpose.
23:07And that's Shakespeare.
23:07After the break, tensions mount as Mark continues his unique brand of punishment.
23:18How would you do that?
23:19This is like interrogational torture.
23:21You break them down.
23:23But will his shenanigans backfire when they make problems for the production?
23:28We decided to cut this thing down a lot.
23:30I think you're still going to experience the torture that every one of us felt that day.
23:35Find out when Graveyard Cars returns.
23:44Okay, is everything going okay, Doug?
23:46Are you liking what you're seeing?
23:47Are you seeing what you're liking?
23:51It's looking all right.
23:53Melissa?
23:53Yep?
23:54I'm going to keep coming back towards the back.
23:56See how nice this works?
23:57How great this is.
23:58Right there.
23:59What did you say?
23:59Hey, Doug, I don't know.
24:01Why won't you say something?
24:02I need words.
24:03So, I understand if Mark's just trying to torture Alyssa for stealing his low-mile challenger,
24:08his precious challenger, you know?
24:11You're part of the culture today that needs instant gratification.
24:14Do you watch that talk tick thing?
24:15Sorry, guys.
24:16But why do I have to be tortured for this?
24:19I didn't tell her to steal it.
24:20I didn't steal it myself.
24:22In fact, I've never stolen a car in my life.
24:25Tilt back.
24:26I'm going to tilt the vehicle.
24:28Tipping back.
24:29One degree, two degree, three degree, four degree, five degree, six degree.
24:33Good.
24:33Good at six degrees.
24:34Can I get confirmation on that?
24:38Doug, confirmation on six degrees?
24:40Oh, yeah.
24:40That's wonderful.
24:41Alyssa, confirmation.
24:42Yes, that looks good.
24:43Copy that.
24:44If you guys could say, Roger, or repeat the message back to me, it would be great.
24:48You want us to repeat the message back to you?
24:50Say, yes.
24:51Six degrees.
24:52Copy.
24:52Six degrees.
24:53Copy.
24:53Okay.
24:54I'm going to go towards the back of the vehicle now, which is going to bring the engine into
24:59the cavity more.
25:01You don't need to do that.
25:02Okay.
25:02Yeah, you do.
25:03You need to go up.
25:04My biggest apologies to both of you.
25:07Recently, I bought a book and I began reading it.
25:11And as I navigated my way through it, there were quite a few points.
25:15The book, quite simply, grabbed that here for you.
25:17Surrounded by idiots.
25:31Different colors represent different types of idiots.
25:36The biggest takeaway I had was be on the offense, not on the defense.
25:41It's like football, right?
25:42The more time you are down there, the more points you're going to score.
25:44I've always been on the defensive here.
25:46Right in there on that, inside of that.
25:49No, no.
25:49Oh, thank God.
25:50White.
25:50Why have you gone crazy?
25:52I didn't mean with the yellow.
25:53I meant with the white.
25:54Was I supposed to know that?
25:55Oh, mama.
25:56Why are you painting without me?
25:58Why, without your...
25:59Because I try to avoid doing all that s*** with you.
26:01So I just come...
26:01What defecation is that?
26:04No, because you always come out and interrupt me.
26:05Don't leave your wingman, man.
26:07Never leave your wingman.
26:08Do you want to come in at four?
26:10How long will it be now?
26:11I don't know.
26:13We've been on the road for an hour.
26:14I don't know.
26:15How long did I say it was going to be?
26:16You repeated it three times.
26:17Three hours?
26:18Three hours.
26:18I have two hours left.
26:20But now, now I'm on the offensive, and that's what's going to get me around the curb.
26:24Okay, just like I say, it's like any game you want to play, you need to be on offense
26:29to score points.
26:30If I had been on offense that day, she wouldn't have known where the keys to the car were.
26:34Now, read back to me, say, apology accepted, 10-4.
26:40Okay.
26:40Apology accepted, 10-4.
26:42Alyssa?
26:43Copy.
26:45That'll work.
26:45The opening commercial included several Dodge model cars for 1970.
26:53Which of these cars featured concealed headlamps?
26:57Was it A. Super B?
26:59B. Coronet RT?
27:02C. Dodge Charger?
27:04D. Dodge Challenger?
27:06Or E. None of the above?
27:09Stick around after the break and find out.
27:16Okay, folks, let's see how you did.
27:20Which of the cars in the opening commercial featured concealed headlamps?
27:24If you said Dodge Charger, you are correct.
27:28In fact, in 1970, the only Mopar muscle car you could get with hideaway or concealed headlamps
27:36was the Charger.
27:38Concealed headlamps, sales code L37, were standard equipment on all Dodge Chargers from 1966 all
27:46the way to 1970, and optional on the 71 and 72 models.
27:52This Mopar Trivia is brought to you by Vans Auto, who works with Tony's Mopar Parts, who
28:00is still very much open for business.
28:03You're welcome, Tony.
28:11This reminds me of Top Gun.
28:13Remember the first one?
28:14He said, break right on three, two, one, break right.
28:17I think this is what Jeffrey was talking about.
28:19And then they broke right, but they went into a flat spin, and that was...
28:23How is that looking, Doug, over there?
28:24Is it going to clear the engine compartment?
28:27Remember when Goose got his back broken by hitting that damn canopy?
28:32Well, folks, we have reached an all-new level of insanity for our fearless leader.
28:36And I had a feeling, I had a bad feeling, because the last time Mark had me sit down and work
28:41on his computer in the search field, the first thing that popped up was interrogational
28:44torture techniques.
28:45That was not remotely what I was looking for.
28:47Okay, what are we doing now?
28:48Slowly going up.
28:49Yeah, we're going to go up.
28:50Okay, because I no longer can see.
28:52So this is instrument flying.
28:55People's lives are in your hands.
28:57I'm going up.
28:58This is like interrogational torture.
29:00You break them down.
29:01You watch those crime shows when somebody's committed a crime.
29:03They don't bring them in there and feed them pizza and soda pop.
29:06They give them a limited amount of water, a limited amount of food, limited bathroom breaks,
29:10and they pound them until they, quite frankly, in a lot of cases, they confess to something
29:15they didn't even do, just so they can get out of there.
29:17That is a successful technique.
29:19That is what this is.
29:25Murder, car theft, both felonies.
29:29I need a clear for takeoff from both of you.
29:31Clear for takeoff.
29:31Go ahead.
29:32Go up.
29:32Yes.
29:33Clear for takeoff.
29:34I don't want to talk like that.
29:35Clear for takeoff.
29:36Clear for takeoff.
29:38Taking off.
29:39T minus three seconds.
29:41Two, one, going vertical.
29:47First rocket booster.
29:49See, it's going in good.
29:53I think it's going to have to go back a little bit more.
29:57I'm going to stop there until I hear further directions.
29:59I cannot have to.
30:00Are you clear on your side, Alyssa?
30:02Yeah.
30:03I'm just seeing that my holes aren't lining up, though.
30:05Which way does it need to go on your side?
30:07It needs to go back.
30:09Back?
30:10Yeah, see where this is, where this is.
30:12Waiting for further directions.
30:14Okay, I'm going to shift this to the right a little.
30:17Oh, gosh.
30:17Okay, I'm going to see if you guys have a lot of time here.
30:19And the reason is, well, one, the show is only an hour long.
30:22And two, you didn't do anything wrong.
30:24You didn't take a car without authorization, so you shouldn't be punished.
30:27We decided to cut this thing down a lot.
30:29Bare minimum, get you across the story, the core idea of this very boring drivetrain install.
30:36But even so, even cut down, I think you're still going to experience the pain, the torture that Doug, Alyssa, and frankly, every one of us felt that day.
30:48I'm just holding.
30:49I'm in a holding pattern.
30:50Is that 10-4, everybody?
30:53Did you watch Top Gun recently or something?
30:55Is that why you're talking like this?
30:56I watch Top Gun every night.
30:58Before I go to sleep, I watch a few good men.
31:00The movie, not in real life.
31:07I'm about to borrow another page from Mark's book.
31:09Let's take a scripture verse out of context.
31:12Peter said that to the Lord, a days is a thousand years.
31:15And anyone who's edited on this show feels Peter's pain.
31:20Shifting passenger side.
31:22One inch.
31:23Okay, I guess all we can do now is just raise it up and see.
31:27Yeah.
31:28I need affirmative action, please.
31:30Affirmative action.
31:31Vertical?
31:32Yep.
31:33Vertical, Doug?
31:34Yep.
31:34Copy that, everybody.
31:3510-4?
31:36Copy that, 10-4?
31:37Copy, copy, copy.
31:37Okay.
31:38My 10-20 is about to go vertical.
31:41Yeah, break left.
31:44Definitely breaking left.
31:46I'm an excellent pilot.
31:48Okay.
31:49Mad Hatter was my handle when I was a kid.
31:51This one is pitched underneath the trigger.
31:53I go, breaker, breaker.
31:55There's a man that's stuck up there.
31:57So, I went on Monday Night Long Island iced teas for a buck.
32:00Was he talking to you?
32:01I met up with that Stardust or chicken.
32:03Remember that girl you used to date with the forehead?
32:06Great.
32:07Big.
32:07I don't know loves hearing about this.
32:09Huge forehead.
32:11Yeah, there's a lot wrong with the forehead when the red...
32:18Big old ugly Roebuck thing.
32:20Maybe that's why he didn't have very many girlfriends.
32:23Okay, Mark.
32:26We did it.
32:26Well, you guys are just the best of everything.
32:28So, at this point, I am going to lower the forklift down and back up out of the way and
32:35assess the situation.
32:37Now, are you guys okay with that?
32:39Yeah, just give me one more second.
32:42No.
32:42Alyssa, you can't take them off because you can't hear.
32:44I'm not.
32:44Just adjusting.
32:45I missed so much.
32:48I'm just getting ready to talk about something really important in here.
32:53Is that loud on those?
32:54Yeah, that's loud.
32:55Thanks for that.
32:59Why would you do that?
33:00And with that, you are welcome.
33:03Enjoy the rest of the show.
33:04Still to come, when Alyssa and Doug are finally rid of Mark.
33:10But I'm happy to help if you want me to put these back on again.
33:12I think we got it.
33:13They can now work on wrapping up the Roadrunner's drivetrain in peace.
33:18Makes our life a lot easier.
33:19But before we see this bird descend on all four wheels, Tony D'Agostino gives you his tips
33:26on lower control arms and how to confidently acquire the correct ones.
33:31Let's identify these sway bar brackets.
33:33When Graveyard Cars returns.
33:40You would have to have a 1974 model car with this control arm to be right for it.
33:46And in this case, it's for an A-body with a front sway bar.
33:50How do we know all that?
33:52I'm going to show you.
33:53So let's go back to our first lower control arm.
33:55Stamped into the front of our lower control arm are four letters.
33:59RW above LF.
34:02RW is for the Carnet and Belvedere body types, which is a B-body.
34:06And we know that this fits all 1962 through 72 B-body cars.
34:11Not to be confusing, but it also fits B-body cars.
34:15It's all Kudas and Challengers.
34:16The reason why they didn't change the RW or add BJ to it is because it was an existing
34:21made part and they just stuck what they already had.
34:24The LF below that means it's for the left side of the car and this is the facing front
34:30side.
34:31Let's look at another lower control arm to see what letters are on this one.
34:35V-L-L-F.
34:37So V-L stands for the A-body cars, which V is for Valiant and L is for Dart.
34:44And the LF means it's for the left side of the car and this is the front side of the
34:48lower control arm.
34:49Let's look at one more just to confirm what we've learned.
34:52It reads V-L-R-F, which again, V-L is for the A-bodies.
34:58And the RF means this is the right side control arm and this is the part that faces forward.
35:03So now I bet you're wondering, what are all these different brackets here for?
35:07These brackets were used if your car had a sway bar.
35:09This car obviously did not have a sway bar, so there was no bracket on it.
35:14But there is a variable on the sway bar bracket.
35:16You need to know the right type of bracket to use for the year of your car.
35:19So let's identify these sway bar brackets and which cars they're for.
35:23This is what I'm going to call the early type.
35:25This style bracket was used on 66 to 69 B-body cars.
35:29The same bracket was also used on 67 to 72 A-body cars.
35:33So if your car had a sway bar and fits in those years, you're going to need to get a control
35:38arm that has this style bracket on it.
35:40That's the outer part of the lower control arm.
35:43This type of sway bar bracket, which is located just off center from the lower control arm,
35:48was used on 1970 to 1972 B-bodies, all E-bodies, which is the Cudas and Challengers, and 73 to
35:566 A-body cars with disc brakes.
35:59It's important to note the distance from the outer part of the lower control arm to where
36:03the sway bar bracket's mounted.
36:05The later type is mounted pretty far away from it, a good six inches.
36:08And the early type is located at the very outer edge, maybe an inch or so in from the end
36:14of the control arm.
36:15So if you have any of your Cuda or Challenger, this is the type sway bar bracket you're going
36:20to be looking for, or if you have a 70 to 72 B-body.
36:24This style bracket was used on the 66 to 69 B-body cars, and also the early A-body cars,
36:30the 67 to 72 cars.
36:32So on with that information, now you know what you need for your car the next time you're
36:37out looking for one, whether it's at a swap meet or online or at a guy's garage.
36:41You don't have to rely on somebody else's information, now you can rely on your own knowledge.
36:45In the original ad at the top of the show, which car model was a two-door post?
37:02Was it A. Charger, B. Super B, C. Coronet RT, D. Challenger, or E. None of the above?
37:15Stick around and find out after the break.
37:18What do you think, folks?
37:25Which of the cars from the ad was a two-door post, and not a hardtop?
37:31If you guessed Charger, you are wrong.
37:35In fact, you couldn't get a Dodge Charger in a post-model.
37:38The answer is none of the above.
37:42It's interesting why Dodge chose not to feature any post-model cars in the ad.
37:48They certainly made a 1970 Super B in a post.
37:52Whatever the case, all the cars featured were hardtops.
37:57And by the way, hardtop means that the quarter windows rolled down.
38:02This Mopar trivia was brought to you by AutoMetal Direct, which is still open and operating.
38:13Just like Tony's Mopar parts.
38:14Going down!
38:26Going down!
38:31Are we going to put the wheels on it today?
38:34How far are you going to back up?
38:36Until I break glass and hear... I don't know.
38:40What's the saying? Back up until you smell poo-poo and hear glass break?
38:49Let's have a little gander poo at this little mother humper.
38:52So, you guys probably don't need my help in installing the front...
38:55But I'm happy to help if you want me to put these back on again.
38:57I think we got it.
38:58Okay.
38:59Doug, you want me to help put the upper control arms in place?
39:02No.
39:03Okay.
39:04All right.
39:05Thank you for your help.
39:05Yeah.
39:06So, finally, Mark has left the building.
39:09Left the building!
39:10Now, maybe Alyssa and I can get this thing wrapped up, get the front suspension put together,
39:15and get it on its wheels.
39:16Get it done.
39:17Okay.
39:18One more time.
39:21Marty has this little thing he likes to say.
39:23He says, grease, grease, grease.
39:25I say it all the time now.
39:27Grease, grease, grease.
39:28Okay.
39:29Makes our life a lot easier.
39:30Okay.
39:31Okay.
39:36Line it up, and I'll see if it's going to go in there.
39:40Once we installed the suspension of the car and my dad was gone, the next thing we did
39:44was install the torsion bars.
39:46You have to have the torsion bars installed in order to put the control arms together.
39:53It's going in!
39:54It's going?
39:55Yep.
39:56Excellent.
39:57Okay.
39:58So, Chrysler made quite a few different torsion bars for these cars.
40:02They made lighter ones, and they make heavier ones.
40:04On most of our performance cars, we use the 780, 781 Hemi torsion bars.
40:10So, the 781 is the driver's side torsion bar.
40:13The 780, the even number, is the passenger side torsion bar.
40:17These are the heavy-duty torsion bars that you would get with the Hemi suspension.
40:21If this car were a slant 6, it would use a smaller diameter torsion bar.
40:25But we're using the heavy-duty because we've got a 440 in this car.
40:28Okay.
40:29So, now we're going to raise up the lower control arm
40:34and line up our upper control arm.
40:38Connecting the upper and lower control arms is pretty simple.
40:41So, you take the lower control arm and bring it up.
40:44You take the upper control arm and bring it down.
40:46Once the control arms are close enough where you can marry them,
40:48you put the ball joint into the spindle,
40:50and then you put the nut on and you're done.
40:53Wait.
40:55Beautiful.
40:55I felt it grabbed.
40:56Okay.
40:56Beautiful.
40:57All right.
40:58Nice work.
40:59Okay.
41:00You're tight.
41:01All right.
41:01I'll get a wrench and I'll tighten it down.
41:03Once we were done with the passenger side,
41:04all we had left was the driver's side.
41:06After we get that buttoned up, we're ready for wheels and tires.
41:09I'm really looking forward to seeing this car on the ground with the wheels on it.
41:12So, we've got the engine, transmission, suspension hooked up.
41:20So, now we're going to be able to lower the car down,
41:23put the wheels and tires on.
41:25Nice.
41:25We're wrapped up.
41:26We are.
41:27Okay.
41:28We're going to cut.
41:33Okay.
41:34I didn't know how they want to do that.
41:36That's fine.
41:36That was great.
41:37That was a good button.
41:42Regardless of my methods, you guys may not agree with all of them.
41:49Look at that car sitting there.
41:58Alyssa was able to work under extreme pressure.
42:03Duress.
42:04If I can use that work, I use duress.
42:05And still came through and got the car done.
42:08It's on its wheels and tires.
42:09It's rolled out in the floor.
42:10We now have a car that will move around on its own wheels.
42:16That means we can finish putting the car together.
42:18Give it back to Mr. Draper, who, by the way,
42:20thank you very much for being patient with us.
42:22And he will have his car back in a few months.
42:35That's Graveyard Cars.
42:36Be sure to go to GraveyardCars.com and check everything out that we do.
42:42Go over to our YouTube page and watch our shorts.
42:45I got some funny stuff.
42:46Not my underwear.
42:47Just, they're called short videos.
42:50I don't think anybody wants to see my underwear.
42:52Besides that, there's Scooby-Doo.
42:54Is that okay with you?
42:55You had a problem with Scooby-Doo underwear, camera person?
42:58No.
42:58Didn't think so.
42:59We'll see you next time.
43:09Go over.
43:10Go over.
43:11Go over.
43:13Go over.
43:24Go over.
43:24Go over.
43:26Go.
43:26Go over.
43:27Go over.
43:29Okay.
