00:00My name is Mark Worman. I am the sole creator of Graveyard Cars, and along with me is Aaron Smith, who is the co-creator of Graveyard Cars.
00:09I kind of figured out which of those statements is true.
00:11Yeah, it'd be 90-10 at the most.
00:14This is a fun episode we had put together recently.
00:18Yeah.
00:19We were talking upstairs in the conference room about how shows like Overhaul and one of them, you know, a pioneer show, my friend Chris Jacobs and Chip Foost,
00:28they would take a car from beginning to end in one episode. It was a big payoff.
00:32The network always wanted us to do that. They said, man, if you can do one car in an episode, you'll rule the world.
00:37Yeah.
00:38Well, it just doesn't happen on a restoration. Some of these restorations take five years or longer.
00:42What we decided to do this part of the season was something we've never done before,
00:46which is take all the footage we have of a car getting restored, cram it together. We'd call it a mashup.
00:52Yeah, and we've done mashups before on single cars, but this time we wanted to, like, give you a little bit more payoff,
00:58I guess, a little bit more instant gratification. So we're bringing you two fully restored cars in this hour.
01:04Yeah.
01:04Now, the two cars that we are bringing you for this episode, we're going to start out with a 1967 Plymouth GTX,
01:11and then the second half is going to be the 1969 Roadrunner convertible.
01:15What makes it unique besides being a convertible on the Roadrunner?
01:18A Hemi for one.
01:20Very rare.
01:21Yeah, very rare.
01:21Power windows.
01:22Power windows.
01:24We've got bucket seats and, oh, I love the color. So, Q5.
01:29Q5 seafoam. So, to my knowledge and the people in my circle, like Tony Dattar-Bagasino,
01:35yeah, that's the only one in the world built like it.
01:38The other car, there were a few of them made, but we haven't found another one with the exact same options.
01:42That's the 67 Plymouth GTX. My good friend, Brett Torino, still owns that car today.
01:47He sold off millions of dollars for the cars, and he only kept three of them.
01:50Two of them are ones I've done. That one and the 1974 Met.
01:53I don't want to spend much time talking about the cars. They're fantastic cars.
01:57So get ready. You're going to take a bit of a time travel because some of the faces that you'll see in these episodes are no longer here,
02:05but they did a good job when they were. So, are we ready to roll?
02:09Let's do it.
02:10Enjoy.
02:12You know, 1967 was the very first year for the GTX, and we've talked about it before,
02:25that it was one of their very first muscle cars that was also a luxury edition.
02:29It's amazing to me that a company like Chrysler would come out with an introductory year like 1967
02:34and not just be walking on eggshells to say, hey, how's the market going to like our 67 GTX? It's all new.
02:39They said, I don't care if you like it or not. We're going to put a 426 Hemi in it, and we're going to make it convertible.
02:45And if you don't like that, we're going to put a four-speed in one, too.
02:47My name is Brett Torino. Aaron and I work together in a collection that I own, and primarily Mopar cars.
03:00I've had a love for Mopar ever since I was a young man. One of my favorite cars is sitting behind me right now, which is why we're here.
03:07About six months ago, I received a phone call from Aaron McLeese of the Torino Collection asking me if we had any room to do any more restoration work.
03:16They had seen the show. They had seen the cars that we do. They were very impressed with it.
03:20And so after discussing the terms and the conditions of a restoration, we put a deal together and had the car shipped up here to Graveyard Cars.
03:27You know, this GTX that represents everything that was great about Detroit, you know, it's a Hemi, it's a four-speed car, it's a big car, and I just love it.
03:39So I'm driving it up to my ranch, and all of a sudden I see the hood ornament wobble, bounces off the hood, hits the windshield, I got the top down, I throw my arm up, I grab the ornament, I caught it in midair, and at that point I knew it was time to get some work done on the car.
03:57Thank you. Thank you very much. It's great to see you.
04:02Oh, I'm so excited about the car. I can't wait to get the dang thing back, hop in it, turn the key, and drive it.
04:10So today we're getting ready to disassemble the 67 Hemi GTX four-speed convertible.
04:14It's not that old of a restoration, but it has been restored.
04:18It just wasn't done exactly perfect, and so Brett, being a perfectionist like myself, would like us to disassemble it, restore it correctly.
04:26If we can use some of the original parts, which is why this is going to take a little bit longer to do, the disassembly, we're going to be more cautious, then we will reuse them.
04:34So let's take the rear differential out of it.
04:37That'll mean we need to get a slide plug for here, a yoke to slide into there, okay?
04:42Okay.
04:42So get me a yoke to slide into it out of one of the other cars we've taken the motor and transmission out of lately, and get me a droplight.
04:48Okay.
04:48Well, you've got to start rounding up tools.
04:51Now, see, this is interesting, because today these cars are big dollar cars, they're collector cars, but back in the day, somebody was pulling a trailer with this.
04:59That's cool.
05:00I mean, that's what they were built for.
05:01They were utilitarian vehicles.
05:03Hold those in.
05:04Everybody ready to drop out.
05:06Nope.
05:08Nope.
05:08It's not going so well.
05:12Too many people trying to do too many things.
05:15I don't think that the guys are used to taking a car apart like this.
05:23I mean, I've taken all kinds of cars apart, but I don't think that they have taken one apart where it's so important to preserve the integrity of the original parts that are coming off.
05:31You know, they're three baboons, you know, with wrenches and screwdrivers.
05:34A lot of the components on it are survivor, not just survivor that they made it, but survivor good.
05:41The seats are actually beautiful.
05:43The disassembly of the drivetrain and the GTX really went well.
05:48Once the rear axle is down out of the car, you can concentrate on the front.
05:51It went smooth.
05:52You unbolt your K-member bolts.
05:54You take your upper control arms loose.
05:55You take your torsion bars out.
05:58The exhaust is already off of the car.
05:59We had disconnected the top side of it before we raised it up in the air.
06:03So really, then, after that, it's just a matter of getting the forklift in position and lowering that engine down out of the cradle.
06:12So the GTX is looking really good.
06:14There's a few spots that do need some attention.
06:16But for the most part, it's ready to get its first primer.
06:19And I think that Brett Torino is going to be really excited to find out that we're moving ahead to that point.
06:24And that's one step closer to getting the dark blue paint on it.
06:27I'll put three or four coats of color on it, two coats of clear, get the whole outside of it painted.
06:45So this will go back to the body man as soon as I'm done.
06:48He'll assemble the whole car.
06:49We'll clean up any areas that might need a dressing.
06:52And then we'll block it down again, and then it'll be ready for final paint.
06:57So I got the GTX all masked, ready for paint.
07:05I'm going to go in there first and get the doors all jammed.
07:08And then we can hang them on the car and do the final paint.
07:13So I sealed the doors.
07:15That takes about 10 minutes to really dry.
07:17I lay the blue down first because it's a smaller area to mask off.
07:21Give that about 30 minutes so it's nice and dry so I can tape on it.
07:25Tape off all the blue.
07:26I'm going to lay the black down.
07:29Then right after I lay the black down, I can unmask it.
07:31Then that's where you're going to have your two-tone.
07:34And then I'll give that about 10 minutes.
07:35Then I go in there and put two coats of clear on it, and it's done.
07:44So right now I've got the whole car all long blocked in 320.
07:47Mark and I last night fitted the doors, the fenders, got everything aligned properly.
07:53So we're doing the final block on it now, scuffing out the jams.
07:57And then when I take it outside to wash it and get all the dust off it and whatnot,
08:01that's what I'll do in my wet sand with 600.
08:03And then it'll be ready for color.
08:18So once I got the pre-paint completely done, I'll let it cure out real good.
08:22I'll sand it, block it, prep it, and get it ready for the final paint job.
08:52So right now I've got six coats of color on it.
09:07I'm giving it about 15 minutes to finish drying.
09:10Then I'm going to go in there, put three coats of clear on, and I'm done.
09:12So I'll have the GTX wrapped up paint-wise today.
09:17I'll get it cut and buffed and over to assembly next week.
09:20The car came here just to get freshened up on the body and paint, and that was it.
09:24So the assembly should go real fast.
09:29The GTX is painted, cut, buffed, and sent out to the assembly shop.
09:35Now it's time to install the newly restored dash from Instrument Specialties.
09:43Have you got side bolts in place yet?
09:45Yeah, side bolts are in place.
09:46Okay.
09:47This will go up here.
09:50I'll let you give a little...
09:52Let me try getting here for you, Mike.
09:53Yeah, there it goes.
09:54Beautiful.
09:55There you go.
09:57The dash went in like butter.
09:58Right now Dave is installing all the rest of the wiring.
10:01He's plugging the plug in place together where they're supposed to go, chasing them down,
10:04putting everything where it needs to be.
10:05Here's our goal, all right?
10:07Once he gets that dash done and everything wired in place,
10:10we're going to be able to put a battery in it, and we can do a systems check.
10:13With the dash installed, it's nearly time to assemble the interior.
10:23But first, the GTX needs its window glass and its signature white convertible top.
10:31Convertible tops can be particularly difficult,
10:33so the ghouls bring in an expert to get the job done to Mark's exacting specifications.
10:47With the convertible top in place and the trim pieces tightened down,
10:52it's time to test the electric convertible top mechanism.
10:55The ghouls move on to the installation of the GTX's monochromatic blue interior.
11:09Some items like carpet are completely replaced with new original equipment replicated components,
11:16whereas the original pieces that are in good condition,
11:19along with the hard-to-find pieces, are cleaned up and restored.
11:23When working with survivor and near-survivor-quality cars,
11:28it's best to save anything that can be feasibly preserved.
11:32As Mark always says, it's only original once,
11:35and collectors will pay top dollar for well-preserved original components.
11:41With the assembly complete, it's time to take this ultra-rare Hemi GTX convertible out on the road.
11:48Yes, we're ready to start this mother humper up.
11:50All right.
11:51Ready?
11:51Let's do this.
11:52Nope.
11:53Oh, look at that.
11:54Oh.
11:55Perfect.
11:57Wow.
12:00Not bad.
12:01That's not good.
12:02It does sound pretty good.
12:03On the engine portion of it, that thing ran really good.
12:06If you recall, he was threatening my life if it didn't run exactly the same as it did when it was here,
12:11and if it didn't sound exactly the same.
12:12So I made sure we didn't touch any of that.
12:14I got my audio boy out back recording it.
12:17We're recording that mother blanker in stereo.
12:19It reminds me of my rapping days.
12:21Turn my headphones up, man.
12:231-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
12:28I can actually hear the cylinders firing.
12:30Sounds good.
12:33I can't hear the cylinders firing.
12:38So we're going to do our last-minute check, button up, make sure it's ready for the road,
12:43do our parking lot test, and take it out and go do some damage.
12:46Can't wait.
12:47So I'm excited, yeah.
12:48I mean, it's the first time we've actually driven that car.
12:51I didn't even drive it when it came in here, so I'm looking forward to it.
12:53Not every day you get to drive a 67 GTX 426 semi four-speed convertible.
12:58Okay, I'm going to fire it up.
12:59Okay.
13:03What are you guys doing?
13:04Hey, we're not ready to go for a spin.
13:05Without me?
13:07What's his face for?
13:08What's wrong with you?
13:10You going?
13:11Heck yeah.
13:12Are we going to put the top down?
13:13Let me put the top down.
13:15More power to her.
13:17Congratulations.
13:19Welcome to hell.
13:19Guys, I can't even see.
13:41Drove good, ran good, track good, steered good, brake good.
13:44Brewers just built that transmission, so it's like butter in there.
13:48That car's tight.
13:49It feels really, really good.
13:51We've got a handful of little things, some brush touching to do, adjust a carburetor on
13:55one of the carburetors, brush touch some of the bolts underneath the hood, and that's
13:59really there and ready to go.
14:06Hello?
14:08Hey, is this Brett?
14:09This is Brett.
14:10Just got off the phone with Brett Torino, and I want to be Brett for a day.
14:15He's everywhere.
14:16Don't think for a second he's not in the air.
14:17He's in the air.
14:19Because I say, well, hey, Brett, this is Mark at Graveyard Cars.
14:22He said, oh, I thought I might be hearing from you.
14:24I heard through the grapevine.
14:25You might be calling me.
14:27How does he know?
14:28Because he has people everywhere, I'm telling you.
14:30That's why he's Brett Torino.
14:31I'm not.
14:31Anyway, he didn't know for sure if it was done, so I told him it was done.
14:35He's very excited.
14:36And I said, I guess then the question is, you know, this is all on you.
14:40We'd love to see you tomorrow.
14:41But how about the day after tomorrow?
14:46Are you serious?
14:46The 1967 Hemi GTX has been detailed and waxed, and the ghouls are getting it prepared for
14:58its reveal to the owner, Brett Torino.
15:01That's really a pretty color.
15:03It is.
15:04This whole thing's coming out.
15:06Coming out really nice.
15:08I think we're good to go for delivery.
15:10Piece of cake.
15:11You forgot something.
15:13I don't do the engine stuff.
15:15The fender tag.
15:17The fender tag.
15:19Yeah, I have it over in my toolbox, actually.
15:20So while you're doing this, then, I'm going to go over and get that fender tag and spray
15:24it real quick.
15:25You better.
15:25Mark's going to be pissed.
15:26Yeah, you can get over it.
15:31Well, I have two.
15:33You know what I should do?
15:34Yeah?
15:35Come here.
15:36I got a great idea.
15:37Okay.
15:38You are so going to be in on this.
15:40This is the fender tag that is correct for this car.
15:42This fender tag is not.
15:44This is for a Superbird.
15:46So I'm thinking, I paint them both blue.
15:49Yeah.
15:50You install this on this car.
15:52Okay.
15:52The Superbird one?
15:53The Superbird one on this car, and we don't say s*** tomorrow.
15:57Okay.
15:57At all.
16:00Our 1967, hemi-powered, four-speed, 354 Dana, blue-on-blue GTX convertible is completely
16:07done.
16:08I mean, restored, detailed, sitting out back waiting for its owner to show up.
16:13That's where we're at right now.
16:14Everybody's excited about Brett showing up.
16:16Yeah.
16:16I met Trino on his last visit with Elsa, and they're awesome.
16:19I can't wait for them to come to the shop and check out their car and just visit with
16:23them.
16:23Honestly, they're such cool people.
16:24And here we go into the Taj Mark Hall, I call it.
16:28Wow.
16:29I can't wait to see it.
16:31I miss it.
16:32It's a beautiful convertible Hemi four-speed GTX.
16:36One of my favorite cars of all time.
16:39Mark's world.
16:40Mark's world.
16:40I think that this moment right here is one for Brett that he'll remember as well because
16:49it is his favorite car.
16:50It is done right.
16:51He'll be able to enjoy it, maintenance-free, have fun, have a ball in it, and truly get back
16:56to, I think, the appreciation he had for cars when he first started his collection.
17:00Amazing.
17:01And I'll remind you, just as I already know you now, certain little things.
17:05Like how it sounds.
17:06The exhaust is exactly the way it is.
17:07I'll be hearing that car before I see it, right?
17:09I know the whole routine.
17:11Right, Mark?
17:11Yes, sir.
17:12Everything's going to work out.
17:13I understand there was a recording made, some decibel printout or something that had
17:18something to do with, you know.
17:21Do you want me to send it to NASA?
17:22I'm telling you, I did my best, all right?
17:24It sounds the way it did before.
17:26So we're going to bring you guys out back, have you wait, and I'm going to bring the
17:30car around the corner and let you see it for the first time in three years.
17:33It's worth the wait.
17:34So excited.
17:35It's been a while since you've seen it, huh?
17:37Too long.
17:38Way too long.
17:39I'm going to line you guys up here.
17:41Bing, bing, bing, bing.
17:42My reaction is, where's the car?
17:45I didn't want to spoil you when I came around the corner.
17:48All right.
17:49It's my only one.
17:50It's your only one.
17:50That's right.
17:52I thought you said, I'm going to lie.
17:53You sure you're ready?
17:54I mean, we can go do something else.
17:55I'm ready.
17:55No, come on, bring it out.
17:57I'm here to help you.
17:58You believe that, don't you?
17:59Come on.
17:59He seemed a little excited.
18:01I mean, he was glad to see everybody and meet and greet, but I think he really wanted
18:05to see the car.
18:07Wow.
18:08I hear it.
18:09Sound the same?
18:10I hear it.
18:10It sounds better.
18:13I guess it.
18:13He hasn't heard it for so long.
18:14That's right.
18:15It's a good Anabelle.
18:16Wow.
18:16It's a good car.
18:17It's a good car.
18:18It's a good car.
18:19Oh, my God.
18:21Look at this thing.
18:23Woohoo!
18:26Yay!
18:26All right.
18:31I knew that when I went around the corner and saw the smile, pretty much I was out of the
18:35woods.
18:35Wow.
18:37Wow.
18:38It is awfully pretty.
18:40Oh, my God.
18:42Here, let me give you a hug.
18:43Oh, my God.
18:45This thing.
18:47This thing literally could bring tears to my eyes.
18:51Mark, amazing.
18:52God almighty, Mark, I am just blown away.
19:05That's just beautiful.
19:06Now, I know you've got red cap batteries down there, and if you want to put one in it, but
19:10I never had much luck with them lasting.
19:12You guys playing games with them?
19:14Huh?
19:14This.
19:16What's that?
19:17It's a little darker.
19:18But that's just because he painted it.
19:20Yeah, he just painted it.
19:21This?
19:21Yeah, we'd love that.
19:23When he comes out and you're looking at the car and you pop the hood, make sure you notice
19:27that's the wrong fender tag for it.
19:28Yeah, I'll look very curious.
19:30Yeah.
19:30Is it my imagination, or is that a, hang on.
19:36Is that a limelight Superbird four-speed?
19:38So, when I look over the fender and I see a Superbird fender tag, I mean, you do, your sphincter
19:44puckers up just for a second.
19:45You have that little moment where you're not sure if you're coming or going.
19:48What are you looking at me for?
19:55That's the fender tag that you gave Will to paint.
19:58For this car?
19:59No, it's not.
20:00Somebody better have to...
20:01It's okay.
20:02It's okay.
20:04It's okay.
20:05You know, I have a healthy sense of humor, as everybody knows, and I like a good joke
20:09and I like to have fun.
20:10I just didn't see Brett playing along.
20:12That was cool.
20:13That was funny.
20:14Yeah, I enjoyed that a lot.
20:16It's good to have a laugh.
20:17I think once everybody's kind of nerves calmed down a little bit and we had the opportunity
20:21to digest the car, relax a little bit, know that it was real and everything was happening
20:26and everything was going to work out, that's when he really started to gain the appreciation
20:30for the car.
20:30This is art.
20:50Yeah, I can't wait.
21:00This car will get driven and I wanted it to be able to be driven, you know.
21:04It wasn't restored to park it in a building and stare at it.
21:10I want this car to be driven and it will be driven.
21:13It was a great day.
21:14You know, I know my GTX has been here several years, but for me, getting the car back right
21:22and knowing what I get back, you know, it's worth the wait.
21:28You know, I wouldn't want a car back that wasn't perfect.
21:32At least I know when Mark and the gang are working on my cars, when the car is ready to
21:37leave, that car is going to be as perfect as it could be.
21:40And so, for me, the wait just makes the reunion that much more special.
21:46The test drive went great.
21:48The car sounded great.
21:50Everything went absolutely perfect on it.
21:51No problems, no errors.
21:53All in all, once that was done, he had to fly out of here.
21:56We said our goodbyes, shook hands, and it was just a great visit.
22:00Always welcome back here.
22:01He's part of the family.
22:04I mean, just thank Mark, thank everyone, Royal, the whole gang that, you know, I've watched
22:09over the years, thrilled to be able to know him, all great people.
22:17And a heck of a lot of fun coming out here today.
22:20Enjoyed every minute of it.
22:22Hope you guys enjoyed the 67 Plymouth GTX 426 semi four-speed convertible.
22:41We are about to introduce one of Aaron's favorite cars because of the seafoam turquoise.
22:45And not just because the owner has the same last name as me.
22:48Oh, no.
22:48Absolutely not.
22:49Yeah, Mr. Smith.
22:50Good guy, though.
22:50Yeah.
22:51This is a one-of-one 69 Hemingway Roadrunner convertible power windows, automatic on the
22:56column, bucket seat car, seafoam turquoise, beautiful car.
23:00We only did one other seafoam car in all of our years here.
23:04What one was it, Aaron?
23:05Was that the GTX?
23:06It was, from Mr. Manning, the Manning family.
23:09Yeah, that was a gorgeous one, too.
23:10All right, we don't want to take much time.
23:12Enjoy the restoration.
23:13This is beginning to end.
23:14Have graveyard cars that do it if we could do it all in one episode.
23:16The pressure is on for the team to make sure customer cars are getting finished without compromise.
23:24Recently, painter Will Scott applied the final paint to our 1969 Roadrunner convertible.
23:30Q5 Seafoam Turquoise is very similar to teal, and it's one of the rarest and arguably most beautiful colors to come from Chrysler.
23:39Equal to this color's beauty is its difficulty to spray, reducer, air pressure, airflow, and pattern angle must be precise.
23:47After the paint job is complete, the ghouls can go to work on the engine compartment, starting with the air grabber.
23:55This particular air intake installation uses a special riveter.
23:59Fortunately for the team, Alyssa's former training with a B-Dazzler will pay dividends.
24:04Let's rock this thing out.
24:19Really didn't hit any roadblocks while we were putting the rest of the pieces on the Hemi.
24:23Everything that's crucial to that drivetrain going in the car is ready to go in the car.
24:28We're ready to move this around to the other side and marry them together.
24:31With the engine and rear suspension built out, Mark and the ghouls can now install the massive 426 Hemi drivetrain into this ultra-rare Roadrunner.
24:44Nothing like putting an 800-pound...
24:45Wow, that's probably more like an 11 or 1,200 one.
24:48Oh, yeah.
24:48You're talking about a Q5 Seafoam Turquoise 69 Hemi Roadrunner convertible.
24:54I mean, they only made seven Hemi Roadrunner convertibles, and it's the only one in Q5.
24:58I got grease here.
24:59The shocks are in place.
25:00That's bad, boys.
25:01That's good.
25:02Yep, should go right in the spot right there.
25:06So you have the front, both sides, leaf spring hangers, shackle hangers, and shocks are tight.
25:13Yep, all the front perches are tight.
25:15Let's get that front end stuck together.
25:17When it comes to the installation of a 426 Hemi in anything, the problem always is size, size, size.
25:23You're trying to stick this great, big, huge elephant engine in a regular-sized normal car.
25:27With as many hands as we have on deck, we shouldn't have any troubles.
25:31What you want to do is get the engine installed without beating the hell out of everything around it.
25:34Hold on.
25:36What the f*** are you laughing at, Nancy?
25:37You want to come leg squatting?
25:39You little b***h.
25:40I can bring the f*** back down, you think?
25:42You want some help?
25:43I'm not in my strength zone.
25:44This is my strength.
25:45Now I'm in.
25:47Don't hold on to the crossmember or the sway bar.
25:49It's not going to go anywhere.
25:52You're a dumb son of a f***.
25:54Okay, we've got the front two K-member bolts in.
25:59Now we can put the transmission crossmember bolts in.
26:01Once that's in, we can raise the car up and put the rear K-member bolts in.
26:06And then we're finally buttoned up.
26:07That is the tightest fit I've seen on a Mopar yet.
26:10Look at that baby go together.
26:15All right.
26:15All we have left is some cotter pins we've got to put in and the drive shaft exhaust.
26:20And all of a sudden, the bottom of this car is going to be wrapped up.
26:23Be driving before you know it.
26:33With engine and rear axle installed, the Ghouls can install the brake lines, fuel lines, and fuel tank.
26:40Then they can build out the firewall and the rest of the engine compartment.
26:44Before moving on to the interior.
26:58Mark decides to check in with the team before they install the Red Streak Firestone tires on the 1969 Hemi Roadrunner convertible.
27:07Now what's cool about this is this gets the painted wheels.
27:10So it has the, I think, a 15-6 painted wheel, painted body color, uses the poverty hub caps on it, and originally would have been a Red Streak tire.
27:18I think that that's one of the neatest combinations, especially when you're talking about a turquoise car with turquoise wheels.
27:23They look the same.
27:24It's just a different brand.
27:25So with that, basically, I'll green light you guys.
27:28Go ahead and put the tires on, get them mounted up.
27:30I can't wait to see it done.
27:31They lubricate both beads, install the lower bead, install the upper bead, set the beads with air pressure, and then inflate to the proper PSI.
27:40Dave brought me over.
27:46He's got the system now, the exhaust system from Accurate Exhaust for our 69 Hemi Roadrunner.
27:51This is a replica of the original exhaust.
27:53Originally, they were mild steel.
27:55This system is mild steel.
27:56The owner of this car doesn't want any fancy schmancy late model weird stuff.
27:59He wants it to look, function, and appear as it did in 1969.
28:03All right.
28:04So the first thing we're going to do is always build the exhaust from the front back.
28:08So we're going to put the H-pipe on.
28:10And these are always tricky because of the torsion bars.
28:12Am I right?
28:13Yeah.
28:13They're tough ones.
28:15I'm going to move that bottom bolt out a little.
28:18There we go.
28:19Okay.
28:20Boy, my chubby little hands hardly fit in here.
28:22You know it?
28:23Oh, it's tight in there.
28:24It is tight.
28:25In that torsion bar.
28:25Good grief.
28:30So right now, we've got the H-pipe installed, which is always a little bit harder.
28:34Over on that right side with the heat riser.
28:36But it's in place.
28:37Something to point out.
28:37This is the original mild steel that they're made out of.
28:40All right.
28:41From the factory.
28:42It's not the late model stainless stuff.
28:44It's not the aluminized.
28:45This is the original type of material that this exhaust was built out.
28:48So it will rust a lot quicker than aluminized or stainless.
28:51But it's what the owner wanted.
28:52He wanted it to look, appear, and function, sound exactly the way it did in 1969.
28:57So that's what you see set in here.
28:58Tom, down at Accurate, he builds every one of these, breaks every one himself,
29:02bends every one, welds every one.
29:04Right now, we've got our H-pipe on, which is the main pipe that bolts to the manifolds.
29:08We have the mufflers on, and they're just kind of mocked into place.
29:11So now we're getting ready to put the over-the-axle pipes on and the resonators and tips.
29:16Oh, look at that.
29:17Bad boy just slide right on there.
29:19Nice.
29:19Ms. Nice.
29:20I call it Ms. Nice.
29:21Ms. Nice.
29:22Ms. Nice.
29:24All right.
29:24We've got a little much coffee this morning, getting kind of crazy out here.
29:27I like to have a little fun.
29:32And now we've got everything mocked into place, every single piece.
29:35We're going to go to the front of the car.
29:37We're going to start at the head pipe.
29:38We're going to start bolting it down, and we'll watch our clearances, tolerances,
29:42make sure we don't have anything too close to the floor of the car,
29:44work our way back to the tips, and it'll be ready to fire up.
29:48So today we're getting ready to put some decals on our 69 Roadrunner convertible,
30:06426 ME automatic, Q5C foam, only one in the world like it.
30:10Alyssa helped me with doing some assembly line markings and the finer points of detail,
30:14installing labels, installing exterior graphics.
30:16That's also the finer points of detail.
30:18So I wanted to have her help me and start developing that skill set for her.
30:23All of your Roadrunners on the cold air induction are going to have the Coyote Duster decal in 69.
30:29This particular one here is for our 70 Coronet, which is a Dodge,
30:33and it actually calls out the Hemi.
30:35But on the Roadrunner, even with a Hemi in it, cold air induction, N96, you'd have got that.
30:39Okay.
30:40These are your running birds.
30:41These are your standing birds.
30:42One of these standing birds goes on the dash.
30:44We don't have the dash back from instrument specialties yet.
30:47And when it does come back, it'll probably be on it.
30:49These are the running birds.
30:50These are the ones that lead into and go away from the Roadrunner nameplate that you see on the door right here.
30:55So I always call Tony D'Agostino back at Tony's parts because he has survivor cars.
30:59He also has OE Gold Class winning restored cars.
31:03He's got a six-barrel car that's the highest quality restoration in the country.
31:07I had him take up-close photographs so I know what the exact length and distance and height is relative to the actual car cell.
31:14When I looked at Tony's pictures, they were exactly 13-sixteenths of an inch off of the R.
31:22Right at the end of my tape measure, put a piece of tape vertically.
31:28All right.
31:28Now we have to transpose this because the bird's going to go right there.
31:34So you'll take another piece of tape.
31:36Do you need that 13-sixteenths mark?
31:38Right.
31:38But you can't put the bird over that, right?
31:40So you want to take this and put it right up against it.
31:45And then take that down.
31:46So now you know the back of your decal goes right there and that's 13-sixteenths of an inch.
31:51You can double check it.
31:54Perfect.
31:55Then when I was looking at his photos, the datum plane is exactly in line with this right here.
32:00So the bottom of the running bird, the dust trail right here, the bottom of his little dust trail,
32:05even though this one drifts down a little bit further than that,
32:08is parallel with the bottom of that emblem.
32:11So rather than guessing, we're going to put a piece of tape on there.
32:14Set it underneath the back of the R, right at the back of the word.
32:18Right there.
32:20Go ahead and nail that down.
32:21That looks good right there.
32:25See that?
32:26Yeah, that looks good.
32:28Tac Clock just gets any dust that's underneath there off of it.
32:32Application gel.
32:38How long will these decals last?
32:41Well, in some cases, they last as long as the cars last.
32:46Especially today's vinyl.
32:47It's so much better than yesterday's vinyl.
32:49But yeah, there's cars out in the graveyard that still have their original decals on them.
32:54Okay, I'd have to say that's pretty darn good.
32:56This might be a stupid question, but it's weird to me that you wouldn't put the decals on
33:00and then do the clear coat over the decals to help protect them.
33:03Well, the factory didn't do that.
33:06So we can't really do that.
33:08Okay, so squeegee.
33:10Starting from the middle out.
33:11But the clear coat would protect it.
33:12I agree.
33:14And that's, see, it's right on that tape line.
33:16That's right up against that line.
33:18That's where you want it.
33:19Right now, I think that's plenty.
33:23So I'm going to pull it, fold it down.
33:26Ooh, that's vibrant.
33:28That is beautiful.
33:30And that's all in there.
33:31You can't really move it around anymore at all?
33:33No, it's done now.
33:34Okay.
33:34If you put it on wrong, you're peeling it back off and ordering another one.
33:39That's really pretty.
33:40Looks good though, doesn't it?
33:41Yeah.
33:42Okay, so that one's good.
33:44Let's go put the other side on.
33:46Then we'll put the decalent on.
33:47And then we'll put all the information labels on.
33:48Okay.
34:11Did you teach Will how to put on decals?
34:13Or where did he learn how?
34:15He doesn't know how.
34:17I thought he was going to put the decals on the back half of the Phantom.
34:20Yeah, you're talking about the billboards?
34:21Called him correctly.
34:22The billboard stripes?
34:23Yes, he is.
34:24Yes, yes, he is.
34:25So how is that going to work out?
34:27Yeah, I don't know.
34:27Maybe next time he should think about that before he shoots his mouth off.
34:30He always picks my work apart.
34:31So he's going to learn the hard way on that one, isn't he now?
34:34It's just like the whole back half of the car, right?
34:38Pretty much, yes.
34:39I'll just go ahead and put this on real quick.
34:50So here, see this crevice?
34:53And you see this crevice, right?
34:55They're going to be centered right in between them.
34:58And he's going to be, the middle of his legs is going to be the middle of that lock cylinder.
35:03That's how that critter is going to go.
35:14Hello, little roadrunner.
35:15Hello.
35:17It makes me want to be a better roadrunner.
35:19You know what I'm saying?
35:21Okay.
35:22Would you agree that the roadrunner is ready for its maiden voyage on the open road?
35:26It is.
35:27We're ready to go.
35:28I'm ready more than ever.
35:29Let's do this.
35:29Give me one thumbs up.
35:32Three, give me the fourth.
35:33There you go.
35:34Take a look at those thumbs.
35:35Phenomenal car.
36:01I mean, what a driver.
36:02And you haven't got a chance to be out in these things.
36:04But some of the cars that I've driven on the initial run don't work out so well.
36:08Because they're cars.
36:09There's a thousand pieces that can go wrong.
36:11But honestly, this car just smooth as glass.
36:14No problems.
36:15Drove like a dream.
36:16Temperature gauge work.
36:17Fuel gauge works.
36:18All the instrumentation.
36:19It's just phenomenal.
36:20Another one bites the dust.
36:24And another one gone.
36:26And another one gone.
36:27Another one bite the dust.
36:28Are we done?
36:29I want to get to you.
36:30Another one bite the dust.
36:31Stop it, Greg.
36:31Yeah.
36:33What is that?
36:34Another one bite the dust day.
36:36That's what he said.
36:37Bite the dust day.
36:39Bite the dust.
36:40Bite the dust day.
36:42It's a queen.
36:43It's from back in the 70s.
36:44I grew up on it.
36:45It doesn't matter.
36:47Okay, the car is done.
36:49You have no fun.
37:04Hi, guys.
37:05Hi.
37:06How are you doing?
37:06Hey, how's it going?
37:07Good.
37:07How are you?
37:08Pretty good.
37:09Thanks, Alyssa.
37:09I'm Darrell Smith.
37:11And my 69 Hemi Roadrunner convertible
37:13has just finished restoration
37:15and I'm coming to pick it up.
37:17Linda.
37:17Nice to meet you.
37:18How are you doing, Darrell?
37:19Hey, how are you?
37:19Good.
37:20Good to see you.
37:20So it was awesome to bring all the guys
37:22from the paint and body shop out front
37:23on this reveal
37:24because they're really the guys
37:25that do a lot of the work.
37:27You know, so it kind of helps keep them going
37:29when they get a thank you.
37:31You know, that goes a long ways.
37:32He was never a big fan of...
37:33No I am team.
37:34He was never a big fan
37:35of the whole crew coming out for reveals.
37:38Did you see the old crew?
37:38The last time I saw it
37:46was probably six months ago.
37:48It was pretty much painted
37:49but it still hadn't been assembled yet.
37:51The engine and trans weren't in yet.
37:53None of the interior.
37:55No drivetrain at all.
37:57Pretty much just a body?
37:58Just a body with nice looking paint.
38:01Right.
38:02I mean, none of you know where it is.
38:04They just told us to come out front
38:05for the reveal.
38:06Oh, I hear it.
38:09Oh, you can hear it now.
38:11Oh, look at that.
38:12There it is.
38:13Look at that.
38:14Woo!
38:16Wow.
38:16That's beautiful, huh?
38:17Amazing.
38:18Look at that.
38:18The color is amazing.
38:19Yeah, it is.
38:20It's just incredible.
38:22The color just lightens up tremendously
38:25and it just looks awesome.
38:28Hey, get out of the car.
38:29My turn.
38:31Come on, man.
38:32I get to drive it once in a while.
38:34I get all the work on it.
38:35Look at this color.
38:37Is that a gorgeous color?
38:39This car looks awesome out here.
38:40Hello, brother.
38:41Hey.
38:42Woo!
38:43How'd you like the sound of that?
38:45The sound.
38:45Yeah, I heard that.
38:46Hello, darling.
38:47How are you?
38:48I'm doing good.
38:49By the way, I didn't approve that.
38:52But you just did.
38:53I never went over 2,000 RPM.
38:54Our original contract said that.
38:57That is beautiful.
38:58This car, 69 Hemi Roadrunner Convertible.
39:01What'd you do cam-wise on that?
39:03Because I guess I'm not familiar with that.
39:04It's a stock 70 hydraulic cam.
39:08For a hydraulic Hemi?
39:09For a normal Hemi?
39:11For a Hemi, yeah.
39:12It's got such a nice bump to it
39:14and it's so responsive.
39:14It's perfect.
39:14Yeah.
39:15And hopefully I never have to take the valve covers off
39:17to adjust the valves.
39:18I hope you never have to do that.
39:19They're not easy.
39:20They're not easy.
39:21It's not easy to even get them off,
39:22let alone once they're off.
39:24This car is awesome.
39:25It really is pretty.
39:26It's a nice color.
39:28A no-excuse car,
39:29it's amazing to me
39:31how something like this has survived so long.
39:34And I will say, in fairness to the car,
39:37I've driven the car.
39:39Yeah, I was going to check the rear tires
39:41to see the wear on.
39:42There's still plenty of tires.
39:43Okay.
39:43It's the second set.
39:44That's what I thought.
39:46What are you doing?
39:48Judas?
39:50No, we didn't smoke the first set of tires off.
39:52But it just drives so nice.
39:55And I attribute it to the guys
39:57that did a great job on the car,
39:58but also the fact that I think
39:59it started life as a good car.
40:01It was taken care of since about 76 on.
40:05Yeah.
40:05I'm going to ask you,
40:06because I know you know your numbers,
40:08probably as good as I do,
40:09especially on cars like this.
40:11How many did they make total Hemi automatics?
40:13Six.
40:14Six total Hemi automatics.
40:15U.S. production.
40:15U.S. production.
40:16None of them went to Canada.
40:18Were the four speeds the Canadians?
40:19There was three Canadian cars,
40:21but there was only 10 U.S. production cars.
40:24And of those,
40:24how many are painted Q5 seafoam turquoise?
40:27That one right there.
40:29Only car in the world, folks.
40:30Only one, yeah.
40:30Only car in the world.
40:38Just in case you took an extended bathroom break,
40:41here's what happened.
40:42The team knocked out the remaining interior
40:44on the Roadrunner convertible
40:46and along with Mark,
40:47installed the factory-replicated mild steel exhaust.
40:51But don't forget Will.
40:53He touched up the paint
40:54and buffed the Hemi Roadrunner.
40:56Plus, he told all the body shop guys
40:58to meet him out front.
41:00That may not seem like a lot,
41:01but,
41:02well,
41:04maybe he had a busy week.
41:06Finally,
41:07Daryl Smith showed up
41:08to see his newly restored,
41:10one-of-a-kind
41:111969 Hemi Roadrunner convertible
41:14in the very rare
41:15Q5 turquoise.
41:18But,
41:18the big question is,
41:20will Alyssa
41:21get to drive it?
41:24Come on.
41:25It's a half a million dollar car.
41:27What do you think?
41:28I was going to say
41:29and a quarter.
41:30Well,
41:30you got to add something
41:30when you're down to five miles.
41:33What's in it?
41:33Hey, Mom and Dad,
41:34is that looking good?
41:35It is.
41:36Yeah.
41:36It is.
41:38Look at that.
41:39Like a brand new car.
41:40Probably better than they did
41:41when they were new.
41:43Aw,
41:44hell yeah.
41:46Hell yeah.
41:47Meet me.
41:49Well,
41:49it's the first time
41:50I've driven it
41:50for about four years
41:52and the car
41:53handles incredible.
41:55Braking was good,
41:56cornering was good,
41:57and performance is excellent.
42:00And the car looks really sharp.
42:01My wife was thrilled
42:04when I got on it.
42:05She thought it was
42:05one of the greatest
42:06running cars
42:07she's ever been in.
42:09And it was a lot of fun.
42:10I enjoyed it.
42:12Well,
42:12the last time I drove it,
42:13it felt pretty loose
42:14and it had a tendency
42:15to wander around
42:16in the lane.
42:17And now it feels real tight.
42:21There's no softness to it.
42:22It rides good.
42:24It corners good.
42:24It's just really nice.
42:26It's right on.
42:28My friend,
42:29thank you very much.
42:29I appreciate all your patience.
42:31I know it took a little longer,
42:32but I hope in the end
42:33you're happy, happy, happy.

42:42The car's beautiful.
42:43Owner's having a ball.
42:44The car runs and drives and tracks.
42:45He lets go of the steering wheel
42:46and it's just tracking down the road.
42:48Great.
42:48Royal did a phenomenal job
42:49on the alignment.
42:50Brakes feel great.

42:51So be careful
42:52and we'll see you in a couple of weeks
