00:00Do you know the Dodge Rebellion had a Navy?
00:02This is the Chrysler 15-foot runabout.
00:05It's a Chrysler 75 horsepower motor.
00:09We're setting courses for a rendezvous with the leader of the Dodge Rebellion.
00:18The leader is here.
00:21New Dodge Charger, the dream car that had to see the light of day.
00:25All ahead and pull from a splash of sports car spirit in luxury car style.
00:33Custom features on Charger the Standard.
00:37Buckets, foreign act, tag up front, center sports console.
00:43Hideaway headlight, taillight, the cross to stern.
00:48And all principal rendezvous with new Dodge Charger.
00:52The Dodge Rebellion wants you!
00:56Oh, give me a home
01:00Where the things all are wrong
01:03Where the deer and the antelope play
01:10If you didn't have Mark Orman, you'd have to invent him.
01:18How did I get here?
01:19And the skies are not cloudy all day
01:26I have no idea why my dad is crazy!
01:34It's not easy being the number one player.
01:39Mark hates everybody.
01:41He always asks.
01:43When the hell will it come?
01:47I just want it!
01:49I have no idea why my dad is crazy!
01:51And the skies are not cloudy all day
01:57And the skies are not cloudy all day
02:05They're coming to get you, Barbara.
02:08Well, quite a journey here with our 66 Hemi Charger.
02:17This thing goes back a long way with us.
02:20By the time that car showed up here, the body was assembled, but had all the trim off of it.
02:25No engine, no transmission in it, but it had the original rear end.
02:29Had the original fender tag to it.
02:31The dash assembly, all of that was intact.
02:33The interior was intact.
02:35Just kind of one of those cars that got pulled apart many years earlier and nobody put it together.
02:41It looked a lot better in the beginning than when we actually got it dipped.
02:45It needed a couple of quarter panels on it.
02:48One of the doors had been previously repaired poorly.
02:50One of the rockers had been repaired previously.
02:53Now, we were fortunate because, if you guys recall back, Stan Lynch had gone out somewhere and unearthed the 1967 Charger,
03:02which the sheet metal is the same for the most part, and brought it by here of all ironic things.
03:06And I thought, well, why not?
03:08I think he made Alyssa cut his hair for it or something.
03:11It's unfortunate.
03:12It's not my problem.
03:13That was a great help towards getting this car done.
03:16The body man replaced both quarters with used donor quarters, sections of the wheelhouse.
03:22I believe it's the left fender that got replaced.
03:24We used a 67, but just changed the holes for the top molding on it.
03:28That car was difficult because there was nothing made for it.
03:32When you get in the 6667 or the first generation Chargers, there's very little made for them.
03:36But we navigated our way through that, sent it out to the mudroom.
03:39Mud guys did a good job on it.
03:41And Will really needs credit on the body and the paint because the body and the paint is beautiful on this car,
03:47and that's a difficult color.
03:48I will say that.
03:49I love giving him crap, and he isn't as good as I am.
03:52And I don't mind saying that either because it's just true.
03:55But on that car, he did a phenomenal job.
03:58The drivetrain, I was able to round up a 1966 426 Hemi for the car.
04:03I called Brewers for a transmission.
04:06They came up with a 1966 18-spline Hemi 4-speed.
04:10Dan back there went through it and rebuilt it, sent me pictures when it was all blown apart.
04:14Everything he does is very sanitary, and it's kind of how we do things too.
04:18He's a 4-speed nut.
04:19That's just what he does is 4-speeds.
04:21We're in the last stages of this car right now.
04:24The stages that if they go well in the next week or so, we'll be able to deliver this car.
04:32Okay.
04:35You know, honestly, I haven't done a 66 Charger before.
04:38There were so many learning curves on this thing, it's not funny.
04:41I'm just so thankful that Mike back in Instrument Specialties does this,
04:46because I don't think I would have been able to do this dash justice.
04:51After the crate was opened up and saw all of the things I'm talking about,
04:54the intricacies and the level of detail and the re-chrome work and the paint work
04:58and the electroluminescent gauges all done, if I'm going to educate my audience,
05:01I can't do it secondhand, I can't learn something today and then teach it to you.
05:05I've got to know what I'm talking about, and frankly, I don't.
05:07So I had Mike come out so we could go over all the dash and do a quality check on it,
05:11make sure everything's working like it's supposed to.
05:13If it's going to fail, it needs to fail now while he's here.
05:16I'm Mike Mancini, I started Instrument Specialties in 2007.
05:25I wanted to concentrate on really high-quality interior component restoration.
05:30I started doing it myself at my home and then turned it into a large business that it is today with 15 employees.
05:37We get the chance to work on all different makes and models from the 1900s all the way up to the mid-1980s,
05:43and we see all sorts of interesting things with those clusters.
05:47So I'm finally where I could have you out and take a look at your dash.
05:51Thank you very much.
05:52You're very welcome.
05:53Looks beautiful.
05:54A while back, I restored a 66 Charger dash, very unique dash, electroluminescent gauge cluster for Mark,
06:00and he asked me to come out for the initial fire-up to make sure everything was working okay.
06:05So when I look at that dash, I just see like a work of art, right?
06:09Not just what you guys did, but the fact that the factory did it.
06:12Look at the chrome, the amazing amount of chrome.
06:15I know you know because you did it.
06:17It's a beautiful design.
06:18I mean, they really just pulled out all the stops on this dash from a design standpoint.
06:23We do a lot of different makes and models, and this is probably one of the most design-heavy dashes that I've seen.
06:33Well, I cannot agree more with what Mike's saying about that.
06:36That thing's a work of art between the electroluminescent gauges, the chrome work, the paint work, the bright finish work, how everything works.
06:42It isn't just an instrument panel that goes into a car. It is a work of art.
06:46And there's a lot of different parts. That lens set has retainers and outer parts, inner parts.
06:52I mean, it's a very complicated bezel just to get it apart and put it back together.
06:56Just one part, one component.
06:58The other thing I thought was cool is the inside hood release.
07:01Yeah.
07:02That's amazing.
07:03I know.
07:04Was that on any other Mopars?
07:05I can't think of any of that.
07:06I'm pretty sure the C-bodies would have had them.
07:09Yeah, but mid-size?
07:10None of the mid-size, none of the mid-cars.
07:12Yeah, I don't think so.
07:13Roadrunner satellites, GTXs, no.
07:15I think that was a charger unit.
07:16I don't know that.
07:17I would not swear, so don't hate on me out there in TV land, but that's what I think.
07:22And the high voltage end of it is it has a little transformer thing or something you were talking about.
07:27Yeah, there's a power pack, they call it.
07:29So this lighting system works through the electricity coming out of that power pack at high voltage AC,
07:35and then it travels through a thin nichrome wire to all of the individual points on the needle and the dial.
07:42The ink on those pieces are electricity conductive, and they illuminate as soon as the electricity hits those pieces.
07:50And that's why you get that glowing effect when you turn that on.
07:53Well, it would shock you if you touch that.
07:55Yeah, you don't want to touch it.
07:56If, say, I was working on the dash on the bench, and I had it plugged in to test the lighting,
08:01and I touched the dial or the pointer, I would get zapped real bad.
08:05God dang.
08:06So you want to be real bad.
08:08So you don't want to be fooling around up underneath your dash either necessarily with your hands.
08:11You want to send it to a professional.
08:13Gotcha.
08:14I.E. you.
08:15Yeah, because I don't do them.
08:17To that note, I think that meeting these guys that are so knowledgeable, it's humbled me.
08:24And I didn't know everything I thought I knew, and that there are people that know more.
08:28But it's also made me a much more well-rounded technician.
08:31When I work on something, even though my standards were high before, I kind of pretend when Mike comes out and looks at it.
08:39Yeah, it'll fly, the owner will never know it.
08:4199% of the people at the car show won't know it.
08:43But what happens when Tony D'Agostino comes in with a Philly sandwich in his hand?
08:48The third screw, the third should be chrome.
08:51You know, I can't take it.
08:53That third makes me crazy.
08:55I would like to see the electroluminescent dash.
08:58What do you think?
08:59Let's light it up.
09:00Do you have faith?
09:01I have faith.
09:02Okay.
09:03Dimmer, I can dim it bright and dim just like a regular dash.
09:06Yes.
09:07Okay.
09:08I've got to turn the lights out.
09:09Hang on.
09:10You cannot appreciate that without the house lights off.
09:14There we go.
09:20Coming up.
09:21You know, I'm on the spot here.
09:22I don't want to disappoint.
09:24It's a car.
09:25Anything can go wrong.
09:27Brian broke his ankle.
09:29So we're putting the exhaust system on.
09:31I have never installed one on a 1966 Hemi charger before.
09:36A lot of people say I try to make you look crazy.
09:38I really don't.
09:39I try to make you look sane.
09:40I leave in what's usable.
09:42It's a miracle.
09:44It's a Christmas miracle.
09:49There we go.
09:51I love how each and every individual number or letter is lit up evenly.
09:56And you do not see that ever on a normal dash.
10:00Again, a Cuda or a Challenger.
10:02And Cuda and Challenger, of course, there are opera lights.
10:04Right.
10:05Shine down on it.
10:06The B bodies are backlit.
10:07But they're backlit sporadically with little 194 bulbs.
10:11Those make it difficult at night to see everything.
10:13Very difficult to see everything.
10:15When you're going down the street at night with that.
10:18See, I've never driven one of these cars ever.
10:20Have you driven one?
10:21I have.
10:22And it's something to see.
10:23It's a beautiful look.
10:24You know, Mike is right about something driving one of these cars at night because after we're
10:28all done with the car and I got a chance to go out and drive it.
10:31And it's just an interesting feeling.
10:33It's just I can't really quite word it.
10:36Maybe rich is the word.
10:37Maybe rich is the word I'm looking for.
10:39Something that just says everything's working like it should.
10:42I mean, I can't believe, like you said, how on earth could they have made that thing?
10:48And why did they make it?
10:50And why did they put it in the charger?
10:51But Tony says it was supposed to be the big dollar, I guess, one-off unique turbine cars.
10:58I'm happy to report that the gauges did work 100% perfectly.
11:03They glowed exactly as they were meant to be.
11:06It was really fantastic to see that light up with the lights out.
11:09And I'm happy that Mark is happy with the cluster.
11:12Well, that is really something.
11:14I thank you so much for going through that.
11:18You were worried.
11:19Admit it.
11:20It's a car.
11:21Anything can go wrong.
11:22You never know.
11:23You want to be, you know, I'm on the spot here.
11:24I don't want to disappoint.
11:26I like putting people on the spot.
11:28I love it.
11:29That's going to be a beautiful car.
11:31It's got a beautiful dash assembly in it.
11:33Absolutely beautiful car.
11:34You guys did an amazing job on my charger dash.
11:38See that car come together.
11:39Yeah.
11:40Too bad you can't hang out a couple more years.
11:42We'll have it probably running.
11:43And maybe two years after that, we'll have it driving down the road.
11:49Okay.
11:50So over the years here at Graveyard Cars, I've installed quite a few exhaust systems.
11:53Some complete ones, some partials.
11:56I have never installed one on a 1966 Hemi charger before.
12:00And I'm looking forward to this one.
12:02So as always, the first part you want to put in is your head pipe.
12:05In this case, we're doing a Hemi.
12:06So it's the H pipe.
12:08And I'll just show you a couple of things.
12:10The reason they call it an H pipe is kind of looks like a big funky H.
12:15It's got this crossover tube.
12:17All Hemis have that.
12:18Some other engines have it.
12:19I think the 440 HP four barrel has it, but the six barrel doesn't.
12:22Six pack doesn't.
12:23Now, another thing to show you to set that there.
12:27These have a heat riser tube that goes to the back of the intake manifold.
12:33It allows warm air to come in, warm up the air underneath the carburetor so that it runs better when it's cold.
12:40So stove pipe right here slips up into this one right up in here.
12:47So we have to be mindful that that is going to slide in.
12:50Then this yoke and this yoke go on to the flares.
12:54This strap right here is in place because we can avoid a lot of weight and awkwardness and misery by setting the H pipe over the top of this right here.
13:04And then all we have to focus on is making our connections at the front.
13:07Right, Dougie?
13:08That's right, Mark.
13:09Tell everybody on TV land that's right.
13:11That's right.
13:12Okay.
13:13It's always a pleasure, sir.
13:15Always a pleasure.
13:17My cat didn't like you growing up.
13:19Me?
13:20Saw something in you.
13:22Sent something in you.
13:23Okay, I gotta leave my side low on the H pipe while you make your connections.
13:27So what the heck is this?
13:29Tigger doesn't love me?
13:30Tigger did love me.
13:31All animals love me.
13:32Tigger's not here to defend himself anymore.
13:35He's been gone for 50 years.
13:37This is just another way Mark likes to try to wind me up.
13:40It happens every day of my life.
13:43You want me to go up a little bit in the back here for you?
13:46Perfect.
13:47Okay?
13:48Yep.
13:49Go ahead and install your bolts.
13:50This is what we do here at Graveyard Car.
13:51Someday we're going to do this live, right Doug?
13:53Really?
13:54So I can catch all the things that I cut out.
13:56A lot of people say I try to make you look crazy.
13:59I really don't.
14:00I try to make you look sane, but I leave in what's usable.
14:03Your cat hated me?
14:05I'm about to be honest with you.
14:07This part about him triggering things, you know, having that trigger that sets things off.
14:12I mean, it happens in humans.
14:13But my cat, Tigger, a beautiful cat.
14:15A little black kitty cat.
14:17A little white nubs on his toes down here.
14:19A little black dot, right?
14:21That's adorable.
14:22You know, he never hated anybody.
14:23Tigger loved everybody.
14:24Tigger was a lover, man.
14:26Whenever Doug would come around, he would just act differently.
14:29Say, hey, Mark, I'm going to check you out.
14:30I'll be out back, man.
14:31Let me know when Red leaves.
14:33Stuff like that.
14:34Hey, if Dougie comes in my room, I'm going to probably pee in there or something, you know?
14:38He'd be purring, sitting on my lap, phone in the ring.
14:40Mom would say, Dougie, Dougie's on the phone, Markie.
14:42And all of a sudden, Tigger would just kind of get all awkward-y, like Alf just walked into the room.
14:48I loved Alf.
14:49Okay.
14:50Well, I think you're missing the point, but okay.
14:53Okay, I'm on my flare.
14:55Nice.
14:56Very nice.
14:57Hey, this is going together pretty good so far.
14:58Well, it is nice, isn't it?
15:00Okay.
15:01All right, let me get my bolt started here.
15:05Oh, boy, this is where my fat little sausage fingers don't do a lot of good here.
15:09But that's all right.
15:11You got both of yours started already?
15:13The top one's in place.
15:14Once we get this wrestled up into place, I can get that up and out on there.
15:18Okay.
15:19All right, let me get one started.
15:20Yes.
15:21We're looking good over here.
15:22Okay.
15:23I'm just going to do these finger tight because, folks, what you want to do is you want to build
15:26your exhaust system from the front to the back.
15:28You want to leave everything loose until you know what all of the trajectory, what all the
15:33alignment of all the pipes is because we still have mufflers on this car over the axle
15:38tailpipes to put in.
15:40If this is tightened down, we won't have the wiggle room that we need at the back.
15:44Look at this.
15:45Look up in there at that flange connection.
15:47Gosh, beautiful.
15:48It's perfect.
15:49Good job.
15:50All right.
15:51So now we're going to grab some mufflers and get those put on.
15:58Ha!
15:59Cut.
16:01Check that karate chop.
16:03That'll scare you.
16:051966 was the first year for the Dodge Charger.
16:09Now, originally this car was supposed to be a turbine car.
16:13The turbine engine project failed, so the turbine Charger failed along with it.
16:19However, it was a great looking car, a great design.
16:22Chrysler had a lot of money invested in it.
16:24They decided to continue to produce it with a conventional engine.
16:27The standard engine, the 66 Charger, was a 318.
16:31Optionally, you could get the 361 two-barrel, which also happened to be the last year for
16:37the 361.
16:38The 383 four-barrel was also optional in the 66 Charger.
16:43What other engine could you have gotten this car?
16:46Is it the 440 Magnum, the 426 Hemi, the 446 pack?
16:52Think you know that answer?
16:53Stay tuned after the commercial break.
16:55We'll let you know how you did.
16:59Okay, folks.
17:00How'd you do?
17:01The 1966 Dodge Charger came standard with a 318 engine.
17:07It was also available with a 361 two-barrel, a 383 four-barrel, and one other engine.
17:15Was it the 440 Magnum, the 426 Hemi, or the 446 pack?
17:24If you said the 426 Hemi, you got it right.
17:28Only 468, 1966 Dodge Chargers were ever built with a Hemi.
17:35Of those, 250 were four-speeds and 218 were automatics, making this 66 Charger 426 Hemi four-speed an incredibly rare and highly valued piece of Mopar muscle history.
17:52So, with the H-pipe in place, we're going to move our way backwards to the mufflers.
18:01This is a clamp that's going to slide over the H-pipe.
18:05All right, and you want to put your muffler on first, which should be this one right here.
18:11This is a Hemi muffler, and I just want to point out that on this muffler, you see an A and a B with an arrow.
18:19So, the flow on this one goes through, and you'll notice they're offset.
18:24If I hold it like that, you can see this is over to the side, and it's over to the side with this dent.
18:29And then you go to this side, it's centered in the back.
18:32That's because this is a relief for the drive shaft.
18:36So, knowing that it goes like this with the A at the front and this to the drive shaft, we're ready to install.
18:44Go ahead, Douglas.
18:51Okay.
18:52The bracket that you see back here right now is going to slide over the muffler itself.
18:59And this has the adjustment to go up and down.
19:02So, our pipe is actually going to slide right through that opening there.
19:05So, Doug, now you can go ahead and slide that in there.
19:09So far, so good.
19:10It slid right into place.
19:11We did pre-fit everything because that's a smart thing to do.
19:14Now, on this one, this is the driver side.
19:19You see that we have our relief, and this is inset that way.
19:24Now, when we do that, it will put this writing on the bottom.
19:29But on the other side, if you look, the writing is on the top.
19:33That's the way it has to go.
19:34This is a left or a right, but only one of them is going to leave this writing down.
19:39So, in this case, we're ready to put the driver's side on.
19:44Just like that.
19:46And I'm going to put a clamp, just a little something-something on that clamp so that it stays there.
19:52All right.
19:54And then you push that up.
19:57I'll push this one in.
19:58Same thing as we did on the other side.
20:00All right.
20:01I think I got it.
20:03I think it's going to stay right there.
20:05I think I'm good.
20:06Okay.
20:07So, now we have our mufflers in place, our H-pipe.
20:11You'll note that you can't see the writing on the bottom of this one, but you do on this.
20:15That's because the reliefs that we showed you to clear the driveshaft, that's the orientation.
20:20Everything has to go together.
20:21So, the next thing we're going to do are the tailpipes.
20:25I have these laid out to start with the right-hand tailpipe for Doug.
20:30At the back, here is our rear hanger.
20:34And here is the Jed Clamp-It.
20:36It has a relief in it right here.
20:39And that relief is going to go into that spot on the body right here.
20:44And that's what that's going to look like when it's in place.
20:48So, I'm going to slide that on there.
20:51Slide it into place.
20:53That goes there.
20:54Yeah.
20:55I like that.
20:56It's a miracle.
20:57It's a Christmas miracle.
20:58All right.
20:59Now we're going to put our clamp into place.
21:01Can you run that down a little for me there, Roosky Bear?
21:04Or hand me the ratchet.
21:08Whoops.
21:09Oh.
21:10Okay.
21:11And that goes a little something like that.
21:13There we go.
21:17Beautiful.
21:18Hand you that back.
21:19Now, how about we do the driver side.
21:21This is going fast.
21:22We still got a lot of work to do.
21:24So, everybody in TV land knows.
21:26Because Brian broke his ankle and cannot do this stuff.
21:30So, we're putting the exhaust system on.
21:32That's in case you all are wondering.
21:33I'm going to wind this up for you.
21:35Wind it up.
21:43Yeah.
21:44All right.
21:45We've got everything in place for this.
21:46H-pipe, mufflers, tailpipe.
21:47Pretty simple system.
21:48Now we're just going to go through and tighten everything up.
21:49After that, we're golden.
21:50We're going to let it down and start working on the interior.
21:51See that?
21:52That's magic, baby.
21:53All right.
21:54All right.
21:55After the break, carburetors are going to leak.
21:56Yep.
21:57Cooling system will leak.
21:58Mm-hmm.
21:59Belt should come off and hit me in the eye and remove it.
22:00Yeah.
22:01And we deserve it.
22:02You forgot to flip it.
22:03We're golden.
22:04We're golden.
22:05We're going to let it down and start working on the interior.
22:06See that?
22:07That's magic, baby.
22:08All right.
22:09After the break, carburetors are going to leak.
22:10Yep.
22:11Cooling system will leak.
22:12Mm-hmm.
22:13Belt should come off and hit me in the eye and remove it.
22:26Yeah.
22:27You forgot the flames.
22:28Oh, yeah.
22:29Fire.
22:30Oh, fire good.
22:31This is exactly why I get scared starting up an engine for the first time.
22:34Why don't you crank it over?
22:36Where's my earplugs?
22:46What have you done?
22:52Okay, so Doug and I right now are getting ready to start up our 1966 Hemi Charger.
22:56Last thing we did was install the exhaust system, which went pretty well.
23:00My question is, do you feel good about this?
23:03What's going to go bad?
23:04Carburetors are going to leak because they were freshly rebuilt.
23:06Yep.
23:07Cooling system will leak.
23:08Mm-hmm.
23:09Probably backfire and blow one of the mufflers off to the tune of $300.
23:12Yep.
23:13Okay.
23:14Belt should come off and hit me in the eye and remove it.
23:16Yeah.
23:17Okay.
23:18And it should have all kinds of engine noises that are untenable.
23:20Right.
23:21And that's because we restored it using nothing but the best parts and took two years to do
23:25it.
23:26And we deserve it.
23:27Okay.
23:28You forgot the flames.
23:29Oh, yeah.
23:30Fire.
23:31Oh, fire.
23:32Good.
23:33Why don't you go ahead and hop in the car.
23:34We're going to try it.
23:35We've got it where it cranks over.
23:36We have not tried to officially start it.
23:38We have the timing.
23:39We have it primed.
23:40The filters are full of fuel.
23:42We don't know.
23:43But, Doug, if you would like to, you can certainly...
23:46Yeah, there's your handsomeness.
23:47There you go.
23:48Stay up like that.
23:49I like that.
23:50He's on GoPro now.
23:51So, an initial fire off is always kind of scary because you never know what to expect.
23:55But, in this case, this engine was never run on the engine run stand and it was built
23:59five years ago.
24:00There is a multitude of things that can go wrong here.
24:02So, I have my fingers crossed that everything goes well.
24:05All right.
24:06Why don't you crank it over.
24:10Where's my earplugs?
24:12Pump it a few times.
24:13I think there's fuel up in the carburetors.
24:15I don't know.
24:21I don't think you need clear flood.
24:25I think you need fuel.
24:26There you go.
24:37Okay, hang on.
24:38We got fire.
24:43Okay, hang on.
24:44We got fire.
24:49I'm going to crank it.
24:50I just let it choke itself out.
24:53This is exactly why I get scared starting up an engine for the first time.
24:57You could have fuel leaks, backfires, a multitude of things could go wrong.
25:01Okay, so in this case, we do have some fuel leaks at the fuel line connections.
25:05We have a little bit of timing advance, some popping, and we've also got an ignition switch going out.
25:10The fact is, if this was easy, anyone could do it.
25:21Okay, when I rotate this, watch this choke butterfly.
25:27See how that opens it and closes it?
25:31So I'm just going to open it all the way up and tighten my screws back down.
25:34So when you see me putting something in that choke butterfly to open it up, it's just because the choke thermostat is adjusted too tight.
25:41You know, it's not that cold in the shop.
25:43It's warm enough that that choke doesn't need to be shut.
25:45So when I put something in there to open that butterfly up, it will lean it out so it can start.
25:50It was acting like it was flooded, like the choke was slammed shut.
25:53It's because the choke was slammed shut.
25:54And once the car is up and running, we can play with that and dial it in and adjust it to perfection.
25:59Okay, why don't we try it again?
26:10I'm going to pull the advance forward a little bit.
26:13See what we got.
26:14See if it kicks back or not.
26:16I'd pump it a few times, give it some fuel.
26:37Look at that!
26:44What have you done?
26:47I blew it up.
26:49Well, that's misfiring.
26:52Why'd you misfiring?
26:54Okay, try it again.
26:56Pump it.
27:02And now I hear the music to my ears.
27:04She's running and she's running good.
27:07Maybe I spoke a little too soon.
27:11The timing might still be off a little bit.
27:15I wonder if I still have it too retarded.
27:17Let me just run it around until it drags.
27:19Okay, try that.
27:21How's that feel better?
27:26Yeah.
27:27Remember I used to dance all the time?
27:31I'd walk like an Egyptian.
27:32All that crazy.
27:33And now it's easy.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Well guys, so you know, if Mark is dancing, the engine is running.
27:38Used to do the coffee grinder.
27:39Back in the day.
27:40Remember the coffee grinder?
27:41Remember the coffee grinder?
27:43No.
27:44No.
27:45Women couldn't stand it.
27:46No.
27:47No.
27:48No!
27:49I can't stand it.
27:50I can't stand it.
27:51No!
27:52I can't stand it.
27:53You know what I mean?
27:54I can't stand it.
27:55I can't stand it.
27:56Remember I used to dance all the time?
27:58I'd walk like an Egyptian.
27:59All that crazy I know.
28:00You'd hit you out there.
28:01Well guys, so you know, if Mark is dancing, the engine is running.
28:03Used to do the coffee grinder.
28:06Back in the day.
28:07Remember the coffee grinder?
28:08No!
28:09Hey, that ain't bad
28:19for an initial fire.
28:36I'm going to shut it off.
28:39I'm not sure what all that rattling is underneath there.
28:42I'm not either.
28:43Okay.
28:44The good news is we got it running.
28:46That means that the engine is good.
28:49Carburetors are good too.
28:50They're not puking.
28:51What we've got to do on it is we've got to set the initial timing on it.
28:56You're going to have to top off the radiator, find out what's rattling underneath there.
29:00Something rattling.
29:01It might be the throw up there, I don't know.
29:06Once we do that, we'll check all the gauges and make sure they work and then if all the
29:12gauges work on it, we'll call in the windshield for it.
29:15We still have the console and the seats to put together in it and a couple of detailing
29:18items on the outside and then this one is done.
29:21So the next thing you're going to see go in is the console and the shifter.
29:24Good job, Rooster.
29:25Good job.
29:26Do a little show them.
29:27Show them what I was doing there.
29:29What's that dance?
29:30Your whole body.
29:31No, no.
29:32That's a seizure.
29:33A seizure?
29:34Yeah.
29:35A dance is where you've got the whole body kind of grooving into it.
29:37I can't dance.
29:38I can't dance.
29:39I just can't do it.
29:40It's like your whole body is just a great big fluid motion.
29:43You just shake it up and you let it go and your arms kind of go wherever they can go.
29:48God, that's horrible, Mark.
29:50No, that's that.
29:51You've just got to stop.
29:52Trust me.
29:53Trust me.
29:54Still to come, we're pretty close to having everything done on this car that we needed
30:06to get done.
30:07This is a 1966 Charger.
30:09That's a car I typically might just walk right past at a car show.
30:13But when I got to build one, it was pretty fascinating.
30:15I've grown a new appreciation for the car because of just how rich it is.
30:19We've got to drive down the road and see how we do.
30:22Let's see if we can't lay a little rubber out here.
30:45This is a 1966 Charger.
30:47That's a car I typically might just walk right past at a car show.
30:50But when I got to build one, it was pretty fascinating.
30:53This car had some very unique features and one of them was the console.
30:56This console runs from the front under the dash all the way back up between the rear
31:02seats to the rear glass.
31:03This is a full console.
31:04This is like space age stuff, right?
31:06So of course, it's the only 66 we have sitting here and somebody a few years back took it apart.
31:13So here I am with a mountain of parts, and we're talking stainless that has to be refinished,
31:17chrome that has to be re-chromed, aluminum.
31:20You anodize the aluminum.
31:22Three different types of metal with three different types of finishes on this console, which incidentally
31:26has three different main sections.
31:29You've got your traditional front section, you know, where your shifter is, your door opens,
31:33right?
31:34The glove box door there, console door.
31:36Then you've got a center section, and then you actually have a rear section with a fold-down
31:40armrest.
31:41I was able to find a factory diagram of the 66 Charger console.
31:46It's like a special section in the manual just for the console.
31:50Same with the headlight doors, by the way.
31:51So I had like a five-page document just on how to put this console together.
31:56Hundreds of fasteners, hundreds of parts that were refinished, and ultimately they all went
32:00back together really well.
32:02And then there was the wiring, of course, but hey, we were able to get it done.
32:05I was able to get it installed in the car, and at that point, we're pretty close to having
32:08everything done on this car that we needed to get done.
32:12So really all we have left to do is install the front seats, and we can take this out for
32:16a maiden voyage.
32:19Well now we have a complete car that's ready to go out and do a final test drive on.
32:23Take a look at that.
32:24Step back, look at some of the before pictures of the car.
32:26We'll share those.
32:27Look at it now.
32:29I've grown a new appreciation for the car because of just how rich it is.
32:33It is loaded with features.
32:35Would cost a fortune on any other car to do.
32:38The sleek profile of the side of the car is very unique.
32:43The blunt hideaway headlight grill setup, very NASCAR inspired in my opinion.
32:49The interior is off the hook, right?
32:51I mean, it's got bucket seats, got a console that runs in the back window, all the way
32:55to the windshield.
32:56Stunningly beautiful.
32:58It has features that you don't see on other cars.
33:01Not just the dash, but all of the intricacies of it.
33:04And it is as close to perfect, probably closer than it ever was when it left the assembly line.
33:09So all I have to do is take it out and drive it and call the owner.
33:13The 1966 Dodge Charger was really a revolutionary car.
33:16It was luxurious.
33:18The interior was even more luxurious.
33:20Four bucket seats.
33:22Pulled down panel that separated the trunk from the main compartment.
33:25You could actually sleep in the back of this car.
33:28It had an electroluminescent dash.
33:30That meant that at night it looked like the instruments glowed in the dark.
33:34It was also one of the first cars to feature hideaway headlights.
33:37You could get other options if you wanted to pay more, but those were standard.
33:43What option could you not get in a 66 Charger, regardless of how much money you had?
33:48Was it speed control, power windows, air conditioning?
33:54If you think you know the answer, stay tuned after the commercial break.
33:57We'll find out together.
33:59Okay folks, it's the moment of truth.
34:03What option was not available on the 1966 Dodge Charger?
34:08Was it air conditioning, power windows, or speed control?
34:15If you said speed control, you got it right.
34:19Both power windows and air conditioning were available on the Charger in 1966.
34:25Unless you optioned the Hemi.
34:27In which case, air conditioning was out the window.
34:35Okay everybody, initial test driving our 66 Hemi Charger.
34:38This one's been with us for a long time.
34:40This is a factory 426 Hemi 4-speed with a 354 Dana in it.
34:44We've had the engine running, set the valves.
34:47It's a solid lifter engine, so they're a little clattery.
34:50That's normal at an idle that goes away once it warms up.
34:53All right, we've had the alignment done.
34:54All the fluid levels are topped off and we are ready to cruise down the highway.
34:58This is my favorite part of the whole build is I get to go out and drive it and do what I want,
35:02put it through the paces, so I'm excited.
35:04And isn't that nice?
35:09Sounds great.
35:11Instrument Specialties did the entire dash assembly in this.
35:16Restored it with the Electro-Luminescent which we featured earlier.
35:20What a fantastic looking and feeling cockpit in a car.
35:24This is just a really rich car on the inside and I love it.
35:28I absolutely love it.
35:29We, as Tony D'Agostino would say, took a couple of liberties and we added power steering and power disc brakes.
35:35We put a lead system on it from Lead Brakes.
35:37It's got the power brake booster, got the bell crank, got the master cylinder,
35:42everything you need for your brakes on this system.
35:45And then we put the 73 and up later style discs on the front.
35:49So he's got power disc brakes, power steering.
35:51We have all the original parts if anybody ever wanted to change it back.
35:54So, the last thing to point out here is this shifter is an inland shifter.
35:57Normally with an inland shifter you have to pull up this tee, go over here and go into reverse.
36:02Now, I'm going to do that again except now I'm going to just do it without pulling up the tee.
36:06And notice it still goes into reverse.
36:07That's because I bought a conversion box, shifter box from Brewers,
36:13that allows you to run an inland shifter on it,
36:16but normal shifting where it just has a detent gate for reverse over and up.
36:21Kind of cool.
36:22And those often times fail, those little trigger pulls.
36:25So that's a good thing.
36:26Alright, here we go.
36:27First gear just pulling out of the shop.
36:31Going to drive down the road and see how we do.
36:33There's furs.
36:41Very nice shift into second gear.
36:43Those are the main things you want to be listening for in your initial road test is weird noises.
36:48Once you get past the weird noises or something not working like it should,
36:52then you can worry about rattles and bumps and squeak and leak department.
36:56That was one of the departments I was in at the dealership.
36:59You'd have to go through these cars when they were new and take them for a drive
37:03and make sure they didn't have any squeaks and leaks.
37:06There's second gear again.
37:08A little cold, a little hesitation there.
37:10There's third.
37:11I will mention Brewers did rebuild the 4-speed for this car.
37:15It is not the original one, but it is a date coded correct one.
37:19Of course, they didn't have a vent on this car in 1966.
37:22So it's about as right as you can get.
37:25Okay.
37:26There's second.
37:27Now.
37:28Now I've got a good first and second.
37:30We just had third a minute ago.
37:32There's third.
37:35And there's fourth.
37:38Beautiful.
37:39Beautiful.
37:41Such a luxurious car.
37:43Such a luxurious car.
37:45Honestly, driving this car, I'm as pleased with the build as it looks.
37:49It drives the same way.
37:50I have no rattles.
37:51Nothing.
37:52Brian did a phenomenal job on it.
37:53It holds the road.
37:54Now they're a little bodacious.
37:56These things like to flop around because they are old bias ply tires that are on it.
38:01It's old technology.
38:02So it doesn't handle like a new Challenger would, but it sure holds the road nice.
38:07And like I say, with no rattles, you go over the railroad tracks.
38:09You're not getting anything weird.
38:11The windows roll up and down.
38:12Beautiful on it.
38:13All the gauges and instrumentation work.
38:15No wind leaks.
38:16That's something else I have to listen for.
38:17A rattle in the trunk.
38:19I give it a 10 out of a possible 10 for its drivability so far.
38:23This car is solid.
38:25I'm absolutely loving the feel of this.
38:28Our power steering works great.
38:29These are big cars, so they're not overly responsive.
38:32Okay.
38:33All right.
38:34It's okay.
38:35It's all right.
38:36I love the fold down back seats and rear buckets.
38:38That is just super cool.
38:39Gear oil's got to warm up in this old four speed because they just aren't like today's transmissions.
38:44They shift like butter.
38:45They take a little bit to get going.
38:46That was nicer.
38:47So I've got a really unique car that's restored.
38:5110 out of 10 concourse restoration as they say.
38:56And an interesting point is I drive this around, you get some of the sights and sounds.
39:00If this was a Hemi Cuda with a four speed in this shape in 19, and it was a 70 or 71, it's half a million to $2 million car.
39:10This little old girl, because they're not as popular as the pony cars like the Acuda and the Challenger and Muscar, later and Muscar stuff, probably only has a value of around 175.
39:23But if you drove the two cars, you would prefer to drive this one over Acuda, I promise.
39:31Still a little bit cold.
39:32Temperature gauges down.
39:33So when it sneezes like that and you kind of see it buck jump, it's just grabbing too much cold air at one time.
39:39Okay, we're going to get up here to my favorite turn now.
39:42I'm doing about 45.
39:44Now I'm in fourth gear.
39:46I'm up to 50.
39:49So there's 55.
39:51That's a freeway speed here in Oregon.
39:54Tachometer's about 3,000 RPM.
39:56This is one of those cars you wish you had an extra gear for.
40:00I will point out that one of my only beefs with the Chrysler's availability back in the day is if you had a track pack or a super track pack, meaning an A33 or an A34,
40:09an A33 would have got you a 3.54 to 1 axle ratio Dana.
40:13An A34 would have gotten you a 410.
40:15Both of those are pretty low gears.
40:17This car tacks up pretty high at freeway speed, meaning I kind of wish it had 323 Dana.
40:22I wish it would have had that because I think a lot of people would after driving the other ones have probably chosen to go with a little taller gear and not make it sound like you're just coming unglued at the seams at 60 miles an hour.
40:33When you're doing 55 miles an hour, I think it was reading almost 5,000 RPMs.
40:37Tach working, speedo working, gas gauge working, oil pressure gauge working, everything working like it should.
40:45Remember 66 doesn't have a self-canceling feature, so if you don't turn that turn signal back off yourself, it's going to stay on and irritate everybody around you.
40:56You know, it's a muscle car.
40:58You've got to put it through the paces a little bit just to make sure that under a heavy load, heavy demand, that we're not having some kind of failure.
41:07Because if something's going to break or fall off or rattle, it's going to do it when it's at its max torque, not me just driving around like this.
41:15So I just learned that I don't over rev the engine.
41:18It's a new engine.
41:19You've got to be mindful of that.
41:20But you can certainly get a little bit of effort on the thing.
41:23And that's what we're going to do.
41:25Let's check that turning radius.
41:28Now, see, that's nice.
41:30That's actually sharper than most.
41:32I will have to hit reverse there.
41:33Oh, can't find it, grind it.
41:37So like I say, overall, this car drives really nice because it's going 3,000 miles away from me when it leaves here.
41:44Because it's a 426 Hemi, a 4-speed, and a 354 Dana, I decided to do something a little bit different.
41:50I don't do it with all the cars, only the ones I really feel good about.
41:53I did a snorkeler for you, several of them.
41:56Wind it up, wind it up, drop the clutch, and let her go.
42:00Let's see if we can't lay a little rubber out here.
42:03Oh yeah, here we go.
42:06Okay, we've got a warmed up car.
42:08It is about 190 degrees, so we shouldn't be sneezing right now.
42:13Tacks working, everything's green light go.
42:16We have fuel in the tank.
42:18It would appear to me that we are ready to go here.
42:24Here we go.
42:31Yeah, that's what you want it to do.
42:34Boy, that's healthy.
42:36Beautiful.
42:38We have a complete car, folks.
42:40I am not hearing one rattle.
42:42This is an initial test drive.
42:43I got no rattles.
42:44Brian did a fantastic job.
42:46First off, this is an unorthodox car for us to work on.
42:49He's never worked on one before.
42:51Quite frankly, I've never restored one before.
42:53So there's a lot of parts rounding up, but he did a great job.
42:56You hear that?
42:57There's no rattles.
42:58He'd pick it up in here.
42:59There's nothing.
43:00Beautiful.
43:01This is a successful maiden voyage.
43:05We'll go on to drive it for about 100 miles.
43:07I like to put about 100 miles on them before I ship them home to the owners.
43:11When I can.
43:12Sometimes it's raining and you can't.
43:14Especially in January.
43:15Don't worry.
43:16But right now, I think.
