00:00Severe weather has made a return to the Central Plains over the last couple of days.
00:05Accuether meteorologist and storm chaser Tony Laubach is then in his dreams here out there with us.
00:10If you're ever kicking back up, he joins us live from Perry, Oklahoma to discuss today's threat and what your plan is to chase for the day.
00:18Wait a minute, Tony. Are you sure it's not Perry, Florida?
00:23Yeah, I know. And I set myself up here.
00:26I kind of did that on purpose because Perry, Florida has been a frequent spot for hurricanes.
00:32Fortunately, at least we're not dealing with that here in Perry, Oklahoma.
00:36Pardon if the service goes out. It was on full.
00:38And then, of course, the minute we go live, the service starts to drop.
00:41So hopefully out here in the boonies, we stay with you here through this hit.
00:45You see the cows behind me. So very Oklahoma-like in this part of the country.
00:50And we're going to be talking about Oklahoma-like storms.
00:52Unfortunately, as you mentioned, we had the severe weather here over the last couple of days.
00:57I found the one severe thunderstorm in the state of Kansas yesterday.
01:01This on I-70 in northwest Kansas, mainly producing damaging wind was the big threat with that.
01:08We did see a little bit in the way of some hail there north of the interstate.
01:11But primarily, this was the 60 to 70-mile-an-hour winds that we saw with this cell as it started to work its way.
01:17Pretty much blew up right over top of me here near the Grainfield area, creating some very low visibilities for travelers on I-70.
01:25Even I had to pull over at one point just because the rain was coming down so hard and the wind was blowing that so strong.
01:32Made visibility very, very difficult at times.
01:35But fortunately, those storms weakened throughout the day.
01:38We got a second round that developed overnight.
01:40That one a little bit more well-behaved.
01:42We saw a few warnings pop up overnight, including over near the Wichita area.
01:45Storms rolled through between 2 o'clock this morning and even had storms as we rolled in about 8 o'clock this morning.
01:52And that is going to really be a key piece to the puzzle today in terms of severe weather.
01:58Let's show you the map of where we're going to be looking at things.
02:00I'm going to be targeting the Fort Smith, Arkansas area.
02:03You see where our moderate risk is here, that orange bubble there across eastern and southeastern Oklahoma into parts of northwest Arkansas.
02:11In terms of chase terrain, some of the worst areas to chase in the central plains and as you get into the Mississippi Valley.
02:18So I'm going to be playing it a little differently than I normally would say here in the open areas near Perry, Oklahoma.
02:24As you'll be sticking mainly to some of the heavier run interstates and state and U.S. highways.
02:31And basically try to kind of work yourself with the storms as they develop here later today.
02:35Expecting those storms to fire along the outflow boundary left behind from those storms that we saw last night.
02:41That is going to be the key play today.
02:43Really where we're going to see the maximum tornado risk is going to be where that boundary ends up setting up.
02:48That could be anywhere along and south of Interstate 40.
02:52Again, Fort Smith is going to be the area I'm going to be kind of working my way here over the next several hours.
02:56And I'll be kind of sitting around waiting as those storms start to develop.
03:00Again, depending on how quickly these clouds clear out, temperatures warm up,
03:04will kind of dictate how early in the afternoon we start to see the development of these thunderstorms.
03:09There's going to be a window, as Bernie mentioned, of that tornado threat.
03:14We could see that, again, maximize there along that outflow boundary early in the afternoon between, say, about 2 and 5.
03:20But we expect a lot of storms to fire kind of along that front.
03:23And that will start to transition that risk to more damaging wind.
03:27Certainly won't keep the isolated tornadoes out of the question there as we get later into the afternoon and evening as well.
03:31So expecting a busy day, probably one of the more higher-end days we've seen in quite some time.
03:36Pretty well a hard time to work in the first full day of fall.
03:42But as we get into that transition season, as you know, we talk about it all the time here on the AccuWeather Network,
03:47that second severe weather season typically gets started about this time of year.
03:52And today is going to be no exception for folks in eastern and southeastern Oklahoma and parts of western Arkansas.
03:59Even down into northeast Texas could see a little bit of action later today as well.
04:03So expecting a busy day on tap for us here across this part of the country.
04:07And we'll be bringing updates to you live this afternoon here on the AccuWeather Network.
04:11So stay tuned as I'm hitting the roads here once again.
04:15Yeah, I hear that plane going.
04:16There's your private jet flying off without you there again, Tony.
04:19Yes, yeah, the private jet.
04:22All right, Tony.
04:23We'll check back with you later.
04:24We'll see you later.
