00:00The United Nations General Assembly High Level Week 2025 continues with the first day of general debate, as world leaders explore solutions to intertwine global challenges.
00:20And Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promised to hold elections in his country one year after the end of the Israeli army's genocide in Gaza.
00:34On Monday, Ecuadorian security forces violently repressed peaceful protests organized by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities.
00:42Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesus Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:53The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Week 2025 started under the theme Better Together, 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.
01:18This happens at a pivotal moment to renew global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity and share action for people and planet.
01:33The 80th session marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations with unofficials and heads of state and government reflecting on the achievements of the past eight decades
01:45and the path ahead for a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system.
01:52This year's high-level meeting highlights the urgency of delivering on the promise of the sustainable development goals and reinvigorating global cooperation, especially in these difficult times that the world is experiencing in some of its regions, such as Gaza.
02:08The United Nations built something extraordinary, a place where all nations, large and small, could come together to solve problems that no country could solve alone.
02:22And yet, at this very moment, the principles of the United Nations are under attack as never before.
02:28As we meet, civilians are being attacked, and international law is being trampled in Gaza.
02:37In the General Assembly Hall, the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the To-State Solution took place.
02:51There, representatives from various countries expressed their commitment and support for the Palestinian cause and people in the face of constant aggression from the State of Israel.
03:03The conference reaffirmed international commitments to the To-State Solution and seeked to mobilize support for its implementation.
03:11And we say here today that the only solution to this conflict is a two-state solution.
03:24The viability of a two-state solution depends on full and universal respect for international law.
03:32Therefore, all states, including the State of Israel, must comply with the collective obligations under international law.
03:48We call on all other countries to take a similar historic step that will have a great impact on supporting the efforts towards implementation of the two-state solution
03:57and achieving permanent and comprehensive peace in the Middle East region.
04:02Mr. President, Excellencies, we are all concerned by the grave crises in the Middle East.
04:11It requires urgent actions, and it's on all of our minds.
04:16Since our meeting in last July, we have seen confirmation of a famine in Gaza.
04:26And the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory has concluded that genocide has been committed in the Gaza Strip.
04:39In addition, during the General Debate, the Annual Meeting of Heads of State and Government that takes place at the beginning of the General Assembly Session,
04:55Her Excellency Annalena Baerbuck, President of the 80th Session of the General Assembly,
05:00presented her vision under the theme Better Together, emphasizing unity, solidarity, and collective action.
05:10This building has served as a monument to our shared hopes for a better future.
05:16It is true that we have sometimes disagreed and confronted each other.
05:25But we have also triumphed.
05:29For 80 years, this institution has promoted progress, sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights.
05:41Today's commemoration is not the story of one institution in the history of thousands,
05:49even millions of people who aspire to turn hope into reality.
05:55The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly will run from September 22 to 30,
06:05and will cover topics of vital importance to humanity.
06:09Among these events will be the Climate Summit,
06:12the first biennial summit for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global economy,
06:18implementation of commitments on development financing,
06:21the high-level meeting to launch the Global Dialogue on Thy Governance, among others.
06:27During the second day of the United Nations General Assembly,
06:31several of the 163 countries are expected to sign the resolution recognizing the State of Palestine,
06:39as part of the so-called to-state solution,
06:42which proposes an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza,
06:46with East Jerusalem as its capital.
06:52In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro celebrated a call by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
07:09to recognize Palestine as a state, as well as the 162 countries that will sign the resolution this Tuesday at the UN General Assembly.
07:18Look, it is very important, very important to move beyond the issue of origin.
07:26The United Nations, as an official resolution that constitutes international law,
07:30is part of the framework of human rights law, and international public law.
07:35In 1967, it decided the borders of the State of Israel, and the borders of the State of Palestine.
07:41That must be respected, and East Jerusalem was decided by the United Nations as the capital of the State of Palestine.
07:48It is totally unjust, but it is the legal decision.
07:50Tomorrow there is a General Assembly, a world conference with 162 countries participating, and they will sign a resolution recognizing the State of Palestine.
08:00Venezuela recognized the State of Palestine many years ago, under Commander Chávez.
08:04We have a Palestinian ambassador here, and we used to have a Venezuelan ambassador in Palestine.
08:11But our embassy was not closed, they bombed us, the Venezuelan embassy in the West Bank was bombed.
08:17So, I believe that tomorrow, September 23rd will be a historic day because the world is telling Palestine that they have the right to be an independent state, and to exist.
08:26We have a short break coming up, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tresu English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
08:38We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:56Welcome back.
08:57Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has promised to hold elections in his country one year after the end of the Israeli army's genocide in Gaza.
09:10The announcement was made during a high-level international conference as held as part of the United Nations General Assembly.
09:17In addition to the elections, the head of state committed to implementing a series of reforms, such as the education system reform.
09:23The leader, who was unable to attend the conference in person due to the United States denying him a visa, assured that the goal is to build a modern and democratic Palestinian state.
09:34With this announcement, he responds to the international community's calls for changes in governance.
09:39In Palestine, UN-backed aid groups are struggling to deliver basic survival aid to the people of Gaza due to persistent access restrictions and attacks on humanitarian convoys.
09:54Various experts from the international organization emphasize that Israel's efforts to prevent international aid to the Palestinians represent a clear violation of human rights and are the main cause of the current state of famine and malnutrition in the enclave.
10:10According to eight distributors, the situation in Gaza Strip is becoming unsustainable due to logistical failures deliberately caused by Netanyahu Zionist army attacks on the organization's facilities, the targeting of civilians seeking food, and the constant displacement caused by the genocidal operation aimed at taking the city of Gaza.
10:29Thousands of people were evacuated from northern Philippine villages on Monday as one of the year's strongest typhoons threatened to cause flooding and landslides.
10:52According to the country's authorities, super typhoon Ragazza has reached sustained winds of around 215 km per hour with gusts up to 295 km per hour when it first made landfall on Panhuitan island of Cagayan province.
11:08The country's national defense forces have issued a warning about the natural phenomenon and are urging the population to take shelter, secure doors and windows, stock up on supplies and limit travel.
11:22In this sense, super typhoon Ragazza is approaching Hong Kong, prompting the closure of schools and many businesses.
11:31About 700 flights at the Hong Kong International Airport have been canceled as operations are suspended from Tuesday evening until early Thursday to ensure safety.
11:39The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a typhoon signal number eight, its third highest warning signaling serious hurricane-strength winds and heavy rainfall expected to cause flooding and disruptions across the city.
11:51Emergency services and local authorities are on high alert and sea levels are anticipated to surge significantly along coastal areas.
11:58Hong Kong is bracing for a typhoon threat comparable to the devastating typhoons, Mangkut in 2018 and Hato in 2017, which caused widespread damage and injuries.
12:14And on Tuesday, China declared the Eurasian Economic Forum 2025 open in the southeastern city of Hian.
12:19With representatives from 40 nations in attendance, the event will be held until September 25th under the theme Bringing Together the New Dynamics of Eurasia to Create a New Pattern of Sustainable Development.
12:31The event includes 13 sub-forums on topics ranging from mining investment and logistics to youth dialogue, traditional Chinese medicine, cultural exchanges and trade promotion.
12:39The forum is part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Year of Sustainable Development, and since its launch in 2005, it has promoted key projects worth more than $137 billion.
12:51You know, topics in Guatemala, defense lawyers broke their forced silence by denouncing the systematic and abusive use of the crime of terrorism in a criminal case being kept secret against former indigenous leaders from Totonicapan, who led nationwide protests in 2023.
13:12A correspondent, Santiago Boton, has the details.
13:14To former indigenous leaders of the Maya people of Totonicapan, face charges of terrorism, an unusual charge that the defense considers anomalous in a case brought by the public prosecutor's office to criminalize social protest.
13:34There is malicious, improper use of criminal law, and in this specific case, of the criminal offense of terrorism one assesses it right.
13:42With serious events that have occurred in other countries.
13:47Luis Pacheco and Hector Chaclan voluntarily served as indigenous authorities of Totonicapan, in 2023.
13:55The charges arose after their people-led protests that stopped the coup attempt by the public prosecutor's office of Consuelo Porras, after the general elections.
14:04So what is really happening is an attempt to create a process, using criminal law to try to suppress social protest.
14:16Both former officials have been in prison since April 2025.
14:20No judge has taken the case, alleging a conflict of interest with the Foundation Against Terrorism, the entity that reported them.
14:27That is precisely where these patterns of criminalization are reflected, as recognized by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which has established that one pattern is precisely the delay in proceedings, keeping people in prison, and in uncertainty about their legal situation.
14:42The team of lawyers also denounces the improper use of legal confidentiality by the public prosecutor's office, and the judges to keep this and other cases secret, despite the fact that the law establishes a period of only 10 days.
14:59Five United Nations reporters have spoken out about these and other arbitrary detentions in the country, but the institutions in question seem to be downplaying international concern.

15:54Welcome back.
16:03On Monday, Ecuadorian security forces violently repressed peaceful protests organized by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities.
16:10In response, the protests intensified, blockades increased, and the call for an indefinite national strike was confirmed.
16:17At least 24 people were reportedly arrested, many of whom were attempting to peacefully mediate with balanced security officials.
16:24There were more than 10 injuries reported in various cities across the country, including two military personnel.
16:29CONAI, supported by unions, trade associations, and various Ecuadorian movements, called for a national strike demanding the repeal of Decree 126,
16:37which eliminates the diesel subsidy, rejects resource exploitation, and threatening protesters.
16:49We stay in Ecuador in the city of La Tacunga, in the province of Cotopaxi.
16:52A national strike began against the measures of Daniel Novoa's government.
16:55Despite the fact that a peaceful march was held, the armed forces and the national police closed the access roads to the city, to the movements and organizations.
17:04A massive march took place in the city of La Tacunga, Ecuador, the temporary seat of Daniel Novoa's government.
17:14Different unions expressed their complaints against the executives' measures, which, according to the people, affect Ecuadorians.
17:21We have to resist and be in resistance, sustain that resistance that is why we are here.
17:29Today we are passive, we are not crazy here, but the government has to work and prioritize projects such as the Ministry of Public Health,
17:36it has to give money to the provincial councils, it has to give the budget to the municipalities.
17:41Now because the workers are up in arms because they are not being paid because there is no money.
17:46So that is where it has to prioritize.
17:53One of the measures that triggered this march, which is part of the national strike, was the elimination of the diesel subsidy because it would lead to an increase in the cost of various products for Ecuadorians, as well as an increase in bus fares, and the cost of daily living.
18:12The message is that he is delivering on his campaign promises, although he did say that he would not touch the price of diesel.
18:22That was the first thing he did. It affects us all directly or indirectly.
18:27Therefore, they demanded to be heard by the government. They tried to enter the city from various points to reach Noboa, but they were met with intimidation and threats, a city that was completely militarized.
18:48If the government doesn't listen, then we will move forward and see if the people in Vicente León Park can hold out for as long as we resist.
18:59In 2019 we stayed for 11 days, in 2022 for 18 days, and today we will see how long we will last, but it all depends on the government.
19:09The protests lasted about six hours with chants and banners in hand. The people expressed their rejection of the executive, even closing various roads, such as the main access road to La Takuna, limiting the departure of buses that had arrived for a march in support of the executive.
19:32In this context, we are not afraid. We have been told that those of us who express or say that we disagree with the policies will be sent to prison for 30 years.
19:44I don't know if there is enough prison space for everyone. So it seems to me that the coward is actually Daniel Nobo because he is hiding behind the repressive force of the police and military and is evading his responsibility to the Ecuadorian people.
19:57He adds, this first major mobilization is only the beginning of the national strike and that in the coming hours they will define strategies to continue expressing their rejection of the measures taken by the government of Daniel Noboa in defense of the people of Ecuador.
20:19This Monday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the United States government of killing young people with missiles in the Caribbean in alleged operations against drug trafficking.
20:37The Colombian head of state condemned that bombs fall on the impoverished rather than where drugs are massively consumed.
20:44Petro's comments took place during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly where he linked the genocide in Gaza with the criminal operations of Washington in the Caribbean, calling the demonstration of the power of barbarism.
20:56The Colombian president also rejected the UN's complicit attitude when referring to the decertification of his country by the United States,
21:03asserting that the drug policy has failed because it is not based on science, but rather on whether the substances are produced in the Global South or the Global North.
21:15And the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Ivan Hill, recalled that his country is a territory free of drug trafficking according to reports from international organizations and therefore questioned the presence of U.S. military in the Caribbean.
21:30Using the pretext of fighting illegal drug trafficking in Latin America, specifically South America, Venezuela has been falsely accused of being a facilitator of these routes, and therefore it should be militarily threatened.
21:49Well, I want to remind in this United Nations venue that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in its 25 reports prior to this year, since 1999, has declared Venezuela, a territory free of illicit crops, a territory free of narcotic substance production,
22:13and a territory that does not play an important role in money laundering related to narcotrafficking.
22:20That is to say,
22:25the main crimes associated with narcotrafficking, and the main organizations that monitor this situation, have certified Venezuela as a country completely free of these crimes.
22:37Venezuela's commitments are absolutely associated to the commitments we have made as an international community to combat drug trafficking.
22:44This Monday will establish the Committee of Solidarity with Venezuela and its Fishermen, a Cuban initiative that brought together more than 25 nations in support of the fishermen and fisherwomen of the Bolivar nation.
23:02The meeting took place in Havana, the capital of Cuba, and was headed by the Minister of the Food Industry, Alberto López Díaz.
23:10Countries from around the world participated telematically, including Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Serena, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Belgium and Congo, among many others.
23:19From different parts of the world, the voices of protests coincided with the claims of the Bolivar nation and called the Caribbean nations threatened by the terror and excessive operations of the United States.
23:29Trade unions and maritime workers also joined in, rejecting Washington's war-mongering impositions.
