There will be mostly clear, sunny skies today, with more cloud building in through the afternoon. A few showers will develop around some coastal areas in the Southeast and through the Channel. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 23/09/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Alex Burkill.
00:00If you've been enjoying the often fine dry weather that many of us have had to start this week, well the good news is it's going to continue for a little while yet.
00:08It's all because we have high pressure across the country. We can see that in the earlier satellite imagery.
00:13Not a huge amount of cloud around, but if I put on the isobars and the fronts, worth highlighting there is an occluded front across the southeast at the moment.
00:21That's brought a fair few showers across parts of East Anglia and Kent and is going to continue to do so as we go through the rest of today.
00:28Some of these showers could actually be a little bit heavy at times as we go through the afternoon, but elsewhere it's a largely dry picture.
00:35Lots of sunshine through the morning, a bit more cloud though as we go into the afternoon.
00:39That being said, there will still be some bright or sunny breaks in amongst the cloud and the sunshine is pretty important because if you get the sunshine, it's going to feel relatively warm.
00:49Temperatures peaking in the mid to possibly high teens quite widely, but if you're stuck under the cloud, feeling a fair bit fresher with temperatures just that.
00:58A little bit below average for the time of year.
01:01Also worth noting in the southeast with the showers, there are some blustery winds and those will continue as will the showers for a little while as we go through the evening and the start of the night.
01:10Also overnight, there's going to be a weak front coming in from the east.
01:13So a bit of cloud and a few outbreaks of rain pushing across some northern eastern parts of England, pushing into some central parts as we go overnight and maybe a bit of cloud, bit of rain pushing into the far east, southeast of Scotland as well.
01:27But away from these areas, it's looking like another dry night with lots of clear skies.
01:32So again, we are going to see temperatures taking a bit of a drop.
01:35Towns and cities mid to high single figures, but rural spots, very low single figures, some getting close to maybe a touch below freezing.
01:42So a little bit of frost in a few spots.
01:44And again, similar to last night, really, we could see a few pockets of mist and fog developing as well.
01:49So a bit of a slow start across some parts of northern England, a bit damp at times perhaps, but any cloud, any rain, it's going to gradually move towards the west and it's going to break up as well.
02:01So as we go through the morning, most places will stay dry with some bright, sunny weather around.
02:06And by the afternoon, really, I'm not expecting much if any rain, really just one or two spots here or there if the clouds thick enough.
02:13But most places stay in dry. And yes, there will be more cloud bubbling up at times.
02:17And so it's not going to be quite as sunny as it will have been through the morning for most.
02:21But there will still be some bright, sunny breaks around.
02:24And again, the sunshine is important when it comes to the temperatures.
02:27So mid to high teens quite widely, always feeling warmest where you get that sunshine and away from the east, southeast where we have some blustery winds.
02:35Also, the winds picking up a little bit across the far northwest.
02:38Now, you will notice some cloud and rain out towards the west of us.
02:41That's going to stay there as we go through the end of the week.
02:44But as we go towards the weekend, well, some question marks.
02:48There's currently a major hurricane, Gabriel, out in the Atlantic.
02:51That's going to track its way eastwards, likely to come towards the Azores and then head towards Portugal as we go through towards the very end of the week, the weekend.
02:59But a trailing front associated with it is set to come across the UK for Saturday.
03:05So that could bring some fairly wet weather, definitely a bit of a change from what we've had through much of this week.
03:11But if you want to have more information about Hurricane Gabriel and also Typhoon Ragassa, which is affecting parts of Asia, well, check out the deep dive with Anna, where she'll be interviewing one of our hurricane experts.
