The risk for severe storms is rumbling from Texas to Ohio, including a tornado threat.
Transcript
00:00And right now, much-needed rain is returning to many of these areas, including the south-central U.S.,
00:05with some storms that will be breaking out from Texas into the mid-south through the middle of the week.
00:10Rain is going to ease drought, but also will bring flooding downpours, gusty winds and hail.
00:15In the northeast, a warm start gives way to showers and a few storms by Tuesday.
00:19A welcome change for drought-hit areas, though some severe weather possible.
00:23We're taking you to Oxford, Mississippi now to get into our top story,
00:28looking at that main area of severe weather.
00:31And, you know, I can't tell if the road is wet there or not.
00:35I think it is. I do think it is. It's difficult to see from that.
00:38But you can see the dark pavement as well in the sidewalks and so forth.
00:42So a steady rain falling in some parts of northeast Mississippi, thunderstorms elsewhere.
00:46I want to briefly take us up, just because there was recently a brand-new tornado warning issued here,
00:51east-northeast of Traverse City, Michigan.
00:53Then we'll jump back down to the south-central, but while we do have the radar here,
00:56I wanted to show you this hook. This is a nasty little hook on this cell near Bel Air, Michigan.
01:01Beware. So, again, pretty well-defined hook on the radar, even just with the straight-up reflectivity,
01:07pulling east of the Grand Traverse Bay.
01:09Looking at the velocity scan here, I'm going to get myself oriented with the radar site.
01:12The radar site's to the east.
01:14And, overall, the green inbound, red outbound.
01:17So there is some rotation that is pretty well co-located with the hook that you would see.
01:22So, Bel Air and other points here, east-northeast, through Antrim County of Michigan.
01:27Tornado warning in effect for you until 645.
01:30We've got some issues here in the Green River, Chestonia in Michigan.
01:33And we'll be looking at some other severe hazards in other parts of the country here.
01:38Anna's going to be taking a look at the Ohio Valley and points east.
01:40But we also have some severe storms on the map into areas of eastern Arkansas, northwest Mississippi, Clarksdale,
01:47also Mariana, Arkansas in Phillips County of Arkansas, southern and southwestern Lee County,
01:52first to see the storms move into the Mariana area.
01:55And then also on the Mississippi side into Kohoma County, Quitman County, and Tallahatchie County.
02:01We're facing a severe thunderstorm or two or three there as well.
02:05The severe threat of flooding in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area has recently diminished, which is good news.
02:11But we're also tracking some storms that are just going to begin to get going here into the big country of Texas.
02:16So we have some concerns there as well.
02:18Flash flooding is going to be an issue here in northern Arkansas, southern Minnesota,
02:21or southern Mississippi, southern parts of Missouri, I should say, and a little bit of northern Mississippi.
02:27But that expands east into more of Kentucky.
02:30And we've got some heat out there.
02:31Ninety-sixes in Lubbock and Odessa and Austin, Texas, very steamy for some.
02:36Others cooling back down, mid-sixties in Flagstaff.
02:39The severe risk continues to move east here.
02:41It'll be expanding tonight, becoming more robust in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma,
02:47and also into eastern Nebraska and western parts of Iowa.
02:50So some of this is tricky because it'll be breaking out as some people go to sleep, Anna.
02:54But right now, with many still awake, we've got severe weather rumbling through the Ohio Valley.
02:58Yeah, and really not great timing for this.
03:01It's that time of the evening.
03:02People are still out and about.
03:03They're still getting home from work.
03:05So certainly one of those times that you want your AccuWeather app sending you those post notifications
03:09about any watches and warnings that are issued for your area.
03:13So looking at the big picture here, you can see thunderstorms moving in their way into the northeast,
03:17but it's the Ohio Valley that's really the focus now.
03:19I'm going to take us to a different view of the radar now so that we can zoom in here
03:22and give you a better picture of exactly what's going on.
03:24Now, I mentioned at the top of the half hour here a messy setup with this line of thunderstorms,
03:29and the reason I'm saying that, I mean, you see all of the severe thunderstorm warnings
03:33and then now our two tornado warnings.
03:35Now, one of these has been ongoing for at least 15 minutes or so at this point,
03:41but another one issued a little bit more recently here.
03:44So switching to the closer radar site here, I believe the Wilmington radar site here
03:49to give you a better picture of exactly what's going on.
03:52Zooming into one of these, this is Highland, Ohio, and even parts of Adams County are included in this.
03:59So Highland and Adams County is here.
04:01Looking at our signs of rotation, we do see that inbound and outbound wind,
04:06so giving you that radar indication that, yes, this is why we have the tornado warning.
04:11Not the strongest signs of rotation necessarily here,
04:14but certainly enough that you should be seeking shelter,
04:17you should be getting to the lowest level of your home or whatever building you are in your tornado-safe location.
04:22Not just here, but we had farther south to this other tornado warning
04:26that has been ongoing for a little bit longer and actually just extended here into Adams County, Ohio here.
04:32So straddling the Ohio-Kentucky lines here with this whole line of thunderstorms.
04:37Again, looking at our signs of rotation, we're seeing some stronger signs here,
04:41some couplets where we have more of the red and the green closer together,
04:44those signs of wind going towards and away from the radar site here.
04:48So anybody in the path of this line of thunderstorms,
04:52you want to make sure that you are seeing weather or where you have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings
04:57because I would expect more tornado warnings and more severe thunderstorm warnings
05:01coming from this line over the next half hour, hour or so until we see things start to weekend.
