After ABC suspended comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show following a threat from the head of the Federal Communications Commission, Democratic lawmakers have criticized the Trump Administration’s apparent pressuring of ABC, calling for Carr’s dismissal and introducing a bill to strengthen free speech protections.
00:00We are in a moment of peril, dire peril in America.
00:04Because yesterday, Donald Trump said he intends to put a dagger through the heart of what America is about.
00:13When he said that he doesn't believe in free speech.
00:18That maybe the licenses and ability to speak of people and broadcast companies that disagree with him should be taken away.
00:30When Donald Trump says the FCC should consider revoking licenses of networks with shows and hosts who are against me and who give me only bad publicity, he is talking about a dictatorship.
00:43That's what dictatorships do.
00:46They shut down anyone who has any disagreement with them.
00:50But that's what he's threatening to do today through Brendan Carr.
00:53He said, I would think maybe their licenses should be taken away.
01:01It'll be up to Brendan Carr.
01:03That is censorship.
01:05It is disgusting.
01:07It is a violation of the First Amendment.
01:11What Trump is doing comes right out of she and Putin's playbook.
01:15Where are our Republican colleagues?
01:17They know this is wrong.
01:18Silence.
01:20Obescence.
01:21To Donald Trump's destruction of free speech and democracy.
01:27He is launching in broad daylight an attack on one of the most basic freedoms in America, which is free speech.
01:34And it's being channeled through his flack at the FCC, Brendan Carr, who coerced ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel for his comments that he or Trump didn't like.
01:43For the longest time, everyone, Ronald Reagan on down, have defended free speech.
01:49But if you lose freedom of speech, it's the road to autocracy.
01:54Mr. Carr is one of the greatest threats to free speech in American history.
02:00He must resign immediately, and if not, Trump should fire him.
