00:00Luke, thanks to our last video, I've been walking around town using the Odyssey, reading
00:04everything I can.
00:05Isn't it a little hard to put the Odyssey in your pocket?
00:07I've got ginormous pants.
00:09Wow, okay.
00:10Well, if you don't have ginormous pants like Cory, then maybe it's time to check out a
00:14free new app from Ryan Anusberger.
00:17It's called Live Read.
00:18Let's check it out.
00:26We are back with another TechConnect and we are looking at a specific app, Luke.
00:32Do we ever just not look at like a specific app?
00:34Yeah, sometimes we just generally open up the app store and then we go, hey, look at
00:40this app.
00:41Those are cool.
00:42Generally looks good to me.
00:44No, we are looking at a specific app today called Live Read.
00:48Correct.
00:49Tell me, what do you think Live Read does?
00:52If you've never used the app, let's pretend.
00:54Yeah.
00:55There's a couple of options.
00:56Okay.
00:57Number one, it could mean that it reanimates your dead body and then reads to you.
01:04Wow.
01:05That went dark pretty quick.
01:08Number two is it reads to you in a live manner, as in on the spot and unfiltered.
01:17Oh.
01:18Well, I'm a little nervous for the demonstration that we're about to do, but I do believe it's
01:23closer to your second option.
01:25But yeah, we're looking at an app called Live Read.
01:27It is iPhone only, and you're going to see from our demonstration today that basically
01:32what it does is you point your camera at any text.
01:35Mm-hmm.
01:36As it sees, it starts to read live.
01:39Um, quick question.
01:40Yeah.
01:41How do you know it's Live Read and not Live Read?
01:44Well, that is a good question.
01:46And we are going to have the developer on, hopefully, in a later show.
01:49And so he can confirm with us if it's Live Read, Live Read, Live Read, or Live Read.
01:55Very good.
01:56Very good.
01:57Very impressive.
01:58All right.
01:59Stick around for the demonstration.
02:02Woo.
02:03Okay.
02:04So let's see how Live Read, or Live Read, or Live Read, or, uh, what's the other one?
02:10All of those ones.
02:11Let's see how it performs when we come to real-world tasks.
02:14Now, Corey, we have already used this on standard pieces of paper, for example, magazines, books,
02:18newspapers, and mail, and it works perfectly well in all of those tasks.
02:22So we're not going to show those here, because those are kind of more standardized things,
02:25and we can confirm this app does a good job of reading them.
02:28But how about some of those more difficult tasks?
02:30Well, we're going to start off here with a rounded container.
02:34And, uh, just to give you a little spoiler here, these are hard surface disinfecting wipes.
02:40This is a larger container, but it is rounded, and I was curious how this app would handle a rounded surface.
02:45So, Corey, are we ready to try this?
02:48I was born ready.
02:49You were born ready?
02:50Okay.
02:51Um, I can't tell, to be honest with you.
02:53That I was born ready?
02:54Yeah.
02:55I'm going to take your word for it.
02:56Rewind.
02:5747 years ago.
02:58Yeah, can we do a flashback here, Jonathan?
03:01Oh!
03:02I'm ready!
03:03All right.
03:04So, let's try this rounded object.
03:06I'm going to open the Live Read app, and what I'm seeing on the screen is a live camera view.
03:11And I'm going to go ahead and point my phone at this container, and we'll see what it says.
03:16Startery.
03:17Startery.
03:18Hard.
03:19Surface.
03:20Disinfecting.
03:21Wipes.
03:22Lemon Sand.
03:23Cleans.
03:24Disinfects.
03:25And deiteries.
03:26Kills 9.9% of bacteria.
03:27That's not much.
03:28Fast and effective cleaning.
03:29Effective against odor causing bacteria.
03:31Alcohol.
03:32Skip backward by swiping to the left.
03:33Solvent.
03:34Bleach free.
03:35Effective.
03:36Fast and kills not cleans.
03:37Disinfects and deiteries.
03:38And forward by swiping to the right.
03:39Fast and effective alcohol.
03:40And I'm going to stop it with a single tap.
03:42Solvent.
03:43Bleach free.
03:44All right.
03:45I love, to be honest, I love the simplicity, right?
03:46Yeah.
03:47Just pointing, starts to read, and then those three simple gestures, tap to stop.
03:51Yep.
03:52Swipe left to go back.
03:53Swipe right to go forward.
03:54Yep.
03:55Those are totally intuitive and really makes just getting text super easy.
03:58And they work.
03:59And so with seeing AI.
04:01Unlike these wipes that only get 9.9%.
04:05Just for the sake of, you know, of accuracy, it should have been 99.9%.
04:10Yes.
04:11And that's right.
04:12I mean, you see this with OCR.
04:14Yes.
04:15Like you got to use a little of common sense to go, okay, obviously it probably meant 99.9.
04:20I would love it if it was only 9.9 and they were just advertising it really proudly.
04:25Do they come like pre, there's bacteria actually on the wipes?
04:30I like it.
04:31But yeah, with seeing AI, you know, that quick text mode, it just keeps on reading and you
04:35can't stop it.
04:36So I really like the fact you can stop this with a single finger tap.
04:39Yeah.
04:40Works really nicely.
04:41And it did a good job of the object.
04:42And now obviously as some of those words were curving around the edge of our container,
04:46it struggled with some of those words.
04:47And that's kind of normal, you know, what you'd expect.
04:49But for the most part, it was a container with different size font, with different styles
04:53of font, different colors of font.
04:55And it did a good job reading it.
04:56Yeah.
04:57So, so far so good.
04:58But let's try an even tougher task, Corey.
05:00Yeah.
05:01We're going to try and read a birthday card that contains stylized printed font, but also
05:06handwriting.
05:07Ooh.
05:08Not it.
05:09Well, I'm glad you made that noise because it's a Halloween card.
05:11All right, let's check it out.
05:13Luke, I was looking through some past mail and I actually came across a card for my son
05:24from his grandma.
05:25Okay.
05:26Now she always puts money in there and I probably should have given him this, but maybe you could
05:31read it first and then instead of giving it to him, I'll just have him watch this video.
05:34Oh, sure.
05:35Let's see what it says.
05:36Oh, oh, there's the money.
05:37Oh, wow.
05:38Very generous.
05:39It was a dime.
05:40I was just going to say, it sounds like a dime to me.
05:42You're calling and it's done.
05:43There you go.
05:44Very generous.
05:45Yeah.
05:46All right.
05:47So I'm going to point this at the camera here and this is going to be the card that
05:49we're looking at.
05:50So it does have some stylized fonts on the front surface and on the inside we have some
05:54stylized fonts, but also handwriting.
05:56Now this is ladies handwriting and it's in the kind of-
06:01What is it?
06:02I mean, what does ladies handwriting mean?
06:04It means it's very neat.
06:05Oh, okay.
06:06But it's in a joined up style.
06:07Gotcha.
06:08You know what I'm saying?
06:09Cursive?
06:10I always write in blocks because I'm a silly guy.
06:13Sure.
06:14But this is very nice.
06:15You have guy handwriting.
06:16I am guy handwriting.
06:17But this is very nice.
06:20Yeah, very nicely done.
06:21But it is joined writing and OCR generally has issues with that.
06:25So we're going to start with the front surface and see how the live read app does with that.
06:29First, I'll point the phone at the surface.
06:32Ranson, magic happens whenever you're around.
06:35No trouble.
06:36Grandson, magic happens whenever you're around.
06:39All right, I'll stop it there.
06:40No, obviously because it's not AI, we're not getting a description of the card.
06:44Yes.
06:45It's straight OCR and just reading the text.
06:47Now, and obviously that's great.
06:49I mean, we got what we needed from it.
06:51We did.
06:52Now, what do you think the chances are it's going to be able to read the handwriting?
06:54Well, I don't want to spoil anything, but OCR usually doesn't do a great job with handwriting.
07:02So I'm guessing it's not going to do a great job.
07:04So for the most part, especially this type of handwriting where it's joined up like this, OCR doesn't do a good job.
07:09But let's see how we get on here.
07:11I'm going to point to the camera there.
07:13Clear Sebastian.
07:14Smiles appear.
07:15Snacks disappear.
07:16Fun gets funner.
07:17Loud gets louder.
07:18So glad to have an amazing grandson like you to love.
07:22Happy Halloween.
07:23I hope you have a for Halloween.
07:26Love always.
07:27Grandma.
07:28Amazing.
07:29So for those that don't know, my son's name is Sebastian.
07:32So we heard Sebastian at the top.
07:33Yeah.
07:34So obviously she wrote that above the message.
07:36Yeah.
07:37Did a great job.
07:38Yeah.
07:39And then you could pick up, you know, you could tell where it went from the card to the actual handwriting.
07:44Right.
07:45And it did it almost perfectly.
07:47There was two words it got wrong.
07:49So it got, it said the word fur instead of deer.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Yeah.
07:54It mostly read the handwriting perfectly well.
07:56Yeah.
07:57Yeah.
07:58It did a great job.
07:59It did an amazing job.
08:00I'm honestly quite surprised.
08:01So I don't know what kind of magic's going on, but.
08:02Oh, about 10 cents worth.
08:04About 10 cents worth of magic.
08:06Yeah.
08:07So it seems good.
08:08Seems very good.
08:09Yeah.
08:10But let's jump into the settings and see what else we can do with this app.
08:13So we have almost covered the live read app.
08:17It is pretty straightforward, but we do want to jump into the settings call and see what type of settings we can change in there.
08:22So I'm going to go ahead and hit the settings.
08:24Settings.
08:25Right.
08:26Oh my gosh.
08:27I talked.
08:28Wow.
08:29So we have three things we can do in the settings.
08:31Number one is change the voice.
08:33I'm using Samantha, United States, but there are various other options.
08:37And so we have some UK voices.
08:39We have Irish voice.
08:40We have some Australian voice.
08:42So yeah, a few different ones to choose from.
08:44And let's just do Karen from Australia.
08:47Because I do want to check, Corey, what my cup here says.
08:52Okay.
08:53Just so I'm sure.
08:54Duncan registered sign.
08:56It's the best.
08:58So that was our Australian voice.
09:01Yes.
09:02Easy to change voices.
09:03Now, none of them are top quality.
09:05Yeah.
09:06It's not like the best on the market text-to-speech voices, but they do the job.
09:10Yeah, absolutely.
09:11You can understand them.
09:12Settings.
09:13We can also change our speech speed in between normal, which I've been using, slow and slowest.
09:18So depending on how quick your ears are, you can get it adjusted for you.
09:21And then finally, at the bottom, we have an option to show the tutorial.
09:24And this is just really just talking through the different commands that you can do.
09:28Tapping on the screen to stop.
09:29Swipe left to go back.
09:30Swipe right to go forward.
09:31So pretty straightforward settings menu.
09:33Nothing crazy.
09:34And just to mention that we are not using any screen reader.
09:37We're not using voiceover.
09:38So this is self-voicing.
09:40So I really do like that even the settings app is self-voiced.
09:44Just to give you confirmation that what you're tapping on is what you expected to be touching.
09:49So I think that's cool.
09:50Yeah, totally.
09:51All right.
09:52Well, let's wrap it up here, Corey.
09:54Give our final thoughts and get out of here.
09:56Live read does exactly what it says it does.
10:02And my honest opinion is you might think like, oh, well, like, what is it doing?
10:08It's so simple.
10:09But I think that's the genius part.
10:11I completely agree with you.
10:12Yeah.
10:13Very easy to use.
10:14And the fact that you can skip backward and forward and stop the reading, honestly, like,
10:19I mean, that's everything that you need right there.
10:21Yeah.
10:22I think this would be really cool.
10:23Like the examples we showed today obviously make sense.
10:26But think about being out in your environment.
10:28Maybe you're at a museum or a zoo.
10:30There's always those plaques up.
10:32You could just quickly have your phone read some of those things to you.
10:36Yeah.
10:37I think there's tons of use cases for this.
10:39It was very fast, very simple, intuitive.
10:42Even without touching the screen, you can just launch live read with Siri and then just
10:46point your phone at anything.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Yeah.
10:49You don't got to choose a specific feature channel.
10:50Just does what it does.
10:52Just does what it does.
10:53So very cool stuff.
10:54And it's free.
10:55You can't go wrong there.
10:56You honestly can't go wrong.
10:57So, yeah, props to Ryan.
10:59Nice bit of development on that.
11:00And we think it's pretty cool.
11:02And you might have been able to watch Ryan on our live show because we do a live show
11:06every two weeks.
11:07And we're hoping he's going to come on an episode or he may have already been on an episode.
11:11You can check out our live shows on youtube.com forward slash at Vision Forward Tech Connect,
11:16which is where this video is being hosted.
11:18They are every two weeks at 11 a.m. Central.

11:34That's techconnect.vision-forward.org where you can get free ACVREP credits on demand.
11:41Subscribe, like, comment, smash, like button, kind of all that stuff.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Smash the app store for live read as well.
11:50Oh, smash away.
11:51Yeah.
11:52Smash the live read button.
11:53Let's smash this video out of here.
11:55See you later, guys.
11:59See you later.
