The Hable Easy is a compact eight button controller designed to help users better operate their touchscreen devices.

Once connected via Bluetooth, this device allows a smartphone or tablet to be used without the need for any touch gestures such as double tapping, swiping, or preforming a rotor gesture. Instead, each of these operations is mapped to one or occasionally two of these buttons.

In conjunction with a vocal assistant like Siri and either TalkBack or VoiceOver, the Hable Easy allows low vision and blind individuals to operate their devices without the use of a touchscreen! Our AT Specialists: Cory and Luke, are here to bring you all the information you need to know about this exciting piece of Assistive Technology!

00:00Welcome back to TechConnect, where we're keeping it breezy with the Hable Easy.
00:04Wow, that's cheesy.
00:15Alright, we are back with another TechConnect, and like Luke said in the intro, we are keeping it breezy.
00:21Back once again with the renegade master of the depot.
00:24That's one way to get you into the video. Just stomp your way in.
00:29Now, we are looking at the Hable Easy. Look, we had done a TechConnect Live with Frake.
00:34I always forget his last name.
00:35Van Walensis. Thank you very much.
00:37I really hope I got that right.
00:38Check it down in the description. You can see that longer video looking at the Hable Easy.
00:43But we are going to look at it today, look at what the buttons do, and give a demonstration.
00:49We're going to be showing it with an iPhone. It does work with both iPhone or Android.
00:54And really, the point of this device is to make using your touchscreen easier by not having to touch the screen at all.
01:01That definitely would make the touchscreen easier.
01:03It would, and you might be saying, Corey, that's impossible.
01:06A touchscreen phone? You must touch it.
01:10Not here.
01:11Wow.
01:12So, let's take a look at the Hable Easy itself. Luke, what would you say to Si? Like a deck of cards? A little taller than a deck of cards?
01:20Yeah, that's a very good comparison. A little narrower, maybe a little taller, but definitely comparable to a deck of cards.
01:25And probably the same thickness. Very light in the hand. You can, you know, it's quite easy to hold.
01:31That's why it's called the Easy. That is very true.
01:34So, the way that I'm going to orient this device is on the left side is the USB-C charging port.
01:42So, it does recharge via USB-C. And it gets a pretty darn good battery life because, really, there isn't a whole lot going on.
01:52And, obviously, it depends on how often you use it. And then, on the right side is a little switch. And that, in the down position is off. Sliding it up will turn on the device.
02:03How about the middle position?
02:04There really is no middle position.
02:05Oh, okay. I'm just checking.
02:06Yeah, just up and down. That's really about it.
02:08Then, on the front of it, there's a total of eight buttons. I'm not, they like to number the buttons, Luke.
02:15I didn't understand the numbering concept all that well. So, I'm just going to-
02:20Oh, he only counts a five of the buttons.
02:22That is the problem. So, I'm going to start and just talk about what the buttons do quickly.
02:26If we start at the very top of the unit, there is a single oval button. And that acts as our home button.
02:33Below that, we have a row of three circle buttons. Starting from the left, we have dictation button.
02:39Middle button is our magic tap, which would be our two-finger double tap. The right button is our Siri button.
02:47Moving down from that, we have another row of three buttons. Starting from the left is our swipe back, or if it was a swipe left gesture.
02:56Middle is our select, or single finger double tap. And then on the right is our swipe forward button.
03:04Below that is another round oval button, and that is our back button. Very easy to feel, nice and tactile.
03:12If you have a little issues feeling them, in the box, you also receive some stickers that have different shapes, arrows, circles, things like that.
03:23And you can put those on each button to make feeling them a little bit easier.
03:29I've also used the device with a client and put bump dots on it to make them even a little bit bigger and more tactile.
03:35So that is an option as well.
03:38All right, now that we know what the buttons do, we should dive in and actually show it in action.
03:43Let's do it.
03:44Let's do it.
03:45All right, it's time to see the Hable 1 in action.
03:50I am going to launch our phone app so we can get into context.
03:55Through this demonstration, I will not touch the touch screen at all.
03:59So it will be the Hable only.
04:02All right, here we go.
04:03We went through the button layouts already.
04:04So let's rock and roll.
04:08Open phone.
04:10Okay.
04:11I found this on the web for home.
04:16All right, let's open up our phone app using Siri.
04:22Open phone.
04:29Come on.
04:30Phone.
04:31There you go.
04:32My card.
04:33Very good.
04:34All right, let's find that add button.
04:35Hey, heading.
04:36Corey Bell.
04:37Section index.
04:38Dictate.
04:39Search.
04:40iCloud.
04:41Add.
04:42There it is.
04:43We'll go ahead and select.
04:44Text field is editing.
04:45First name.
04:46Insertion point at start.
04:47All right, it's helpful already telling us where we are.
04:48I'm going to use the dictation because remember, I'm not touching the screen.
04:51Here we go.
04:52Luke.
04:53Tap F.
04:54Foxtrot.
04:55Okay.
04:56Now, it didn't tell me that it put Luke, but that's okay.
05:01We can swipe off of it.
05:02Last name.
05:03Text field.
05:04And let's come back and check it out.
05:05Text field is editing.
05:06First name.
05:07Character mode.
05:08Insertion point at start.
05:09Oh, it didn't put anything.
05:10It did not put anything in there.
05:11It did not like your name.
05:12Let's try one more time.
05:13Luke.
05:14Inserted Luke.
05:16There you go.
05:17It took twice.
05:18You're twice as nice.
05:19All right, here we go.
05:20Clear text button.
05:21And we're going to go over to last name.
05:23Text field.
05:24Text field.
05:25Insertion point at end.
05:26And we can use dictate again.
05:28Skywalker.
05:29Inserted sky.
05:31Oh, it doesn't like Luke Skywalker.
05:33But we're going to just put it in as Luke.
05:36Now, as you can see, we are doing all of this just by using the Hable Easy.
05:41I'm not going to go through the entire process of putting in a contact.
05:45Well, that's because you don't know Luke Skywalker's number.
05:47I also don't know Luke's guy either.
05:50But as you can see, we can simply do it just by using the physical buttons on the Hable Easy.
05:57Now, there are some advanced features that are available.
06:01Yeah.
06:02Now, I will be honest though, Luke.
06:04One of them I can't get to work.
06:05Aww.
06:06So, we should be able to hold down the swipe right button to jump all the way to the end of a screen.
06:14Or hold down the swipe left button to jump all the way to the beginning of the screen.
06:19It's not working for me for whatever reason.
06:22I have put a message into Frank to find out what I'm doing wrong.
06:26And we'll drop it down in the comments letting people know what my mistake was.
06:31But that can be super helpful, especially if you've got a long list of things that you want to get down to the bottom.
06:37You know, for example, when you open up the phone app, you've got those phone tab across the bottom.
06:42It'd be nice to be able to jump right down there.
06:45The other interesting thing it can do is your rotor gesture.
06:49I know some people struggle with the rotor gesture.
06:51It's a strange gesture.
06:52It can be, yep.
06:53And so, we haven't talked about real quickly how that can be done.
06:56So, I wanted to just mention it.
06:58We can hold down the two center buttons in those rows of three.
07:03And that will go ahead and do your rotor gesture.
07:06It only goes in one direction.
07:09And then once you've gotten to the option you want, if you want to swipe up,
07:14you can hold down the middle button of the top row of three plus the top oval button.
07:19And that will be a swipe up.
07:21To do a swipe down, it would be the center button of the bottom row of three plus the bottom most oval button.
07:29And that will do a swipe down gesture.
07:32Was Harry Styles involved in the development of this?
07:35Why Harry Styles? One Direction?
07:37Nice.
07:38It only goes in one direction.
07:40Cue Harry Styles.
07:42And we dance all night.
07:44Do the best song guys.
07:45But, I find that using the Hable Easy can make doing a more complicated task like Contax a little bit easier.
07:55It's almost as if they called it the Hable Easy for who uses it.
07:58That was easy.
07:59It makes it able to do it easy.
08:01With your hand, the Hable.
08:04Well, that was the Hable Easy and boy, it sure was breezy.
08:12But, what did we think about it, Corey?
08:14Well, why don't you tell me?
08:15I thought it pleased me.
08:17Good effort.
08:19No, I actually see a really good use case for the Hable Easy.
08:24I think that there's two groups of people it can be great for.
08:28Those that may struggle using a touch screen.
08:31I think it's becoming harder and harder to find devices that are not touch screen.
08:36Oh, yeah.
08:37Unless you're going with like the smart vision or the blind shell.
08:40But, the Hable Easy makes using a touch screen much easier.
08:45Oh, yeah.
08:46Or, the second group is just, even if you are comfortable using the touch screen, you may just find at times you want to use the physical buttons.
08:53Maybe you want to keep the phone in your pocket or it's across the room from you, whatever.
08:57You basically can do everything you'd want from answering the phone to completely controlling device.
09:03So, I think it is a winner.
09:05Yeah.
09:06I mean, it's like a remote control for your phone.
09:07It really is.
09:08And who doesn't love a remote?
09:09Exactly.
09:10And don't forget as well, you can also use the Hable Easy as a Hable One Braille input device for your phone.
09:18So, it's the same hardware as the Hable One.
09:20And we did a video with Freak on the Hable One.
09:23So, you guys could check that out if you want to see how that works.
09:25But, yeah, you should be able to use it as either of those two kind of methods, either of those two devices.
09:32So, very cool stuff.
09:33Indeed, not too expensive either.
09:35Corey, what was the retail?
09:36If I'm not mistaken, I think it's $209.
09:38Okay.
09:39Why that number is sticking in my head, I'm not 100%.
09:42I think you might be right.
09:43But I think it's right around that price, which I think is pretty reasonable.
09:46Oh, yeah.
09:47Very good.
09:48So, check it out if you haven't already.
09:50And, of course.
09:52Oh, you know what I forgot to mention?
09:54One really cool thing, and you'll probably hear it in just a moment.
09:59Okay.
10:00But when you get your Hable Easy, and you get the box, and you open it up as a nice little present,
10:07you are going to hear Freak himself talking you through getting the device and unboxing it.
10:14So, cue Freak.
10:17Hey, welcome to your new adventure with Hable Easy.
10:21I'm Freak, the founder of Hable, and I am here to guide you through setting up your new smartphone assistant.
10:27Now, don't worry.
10:28I'm just a small audio player in the box.
10:30If you want to restart this audio, just close and open the box again.
10:35Alright.
10:36First things first.
10:37Let's turn on your Hable Easy.
10:39Just flick the switch on your device.
10:42You'll know it's on when you feel that friendly vibration saying hello.
10:46Now, grab your phone or tablet, and let's get connected.
10:50Also, inside the box, you will find the tactile stickers I sent you.
10:55You can put these on the buttons to make it easier to remember what each button does.
10:59If you ever feel like you need a helping hand, just reach out to me at support at IamHable.com.
11:06My team and I will always be here to help you soar.
11:10Enjoy your journey with the Hable Easy.
11:12I know you've got this.
11:14Thank you, Frake.
11:15That certainly was educational, and that is a unique feature of this device for sure.
11:20And another unique feature is our live show, Corey.
11:23Yes.
11:24Because we are unique and special individuals, and you can check out our live show every other Thursday.
11:29The next live show will be the week after this video releases, and it's at 11 a.m. Central.
11:34So make sure to tune into the YouTube channel to check me and Corey's live antics.
11:39Yes.
11:40And make sure you please subscribe to the channel.
11:42It does really help us moving forward.
11:45Go ahead and hit that like button and put something down in the comments.
11:50Could you see yourself using the Hable Easy or maybe the Hable one, or do you already have one?
11:56And what's your favorite thing to do with it?
11:59You can also head over to techconnect.vision-forward.org for more content, including webinars for free ACVREP credit.
12:09All right, Corey, let's get out of here.
12:11I've got my mind on chips, and they've got to be cheesy.
12:14So let's wrap it.
12:15I am feeling a nice summer breezy.
12:17See you all later.
12:19Summer breeze, makes me feel fine.
12:24Go and feel the dad put in my mind.
