We here at Vision Forward want to wish all you Tech Connectors a very Merry Christmas! We read your wish lists in the comment section and now we are giving you your present early!
Cory and Luke are back at it again! Bringing you the knowledge you need to safely get where you want to go this winter. That's right, we are taking another look at the free Indigo Nav App available for iOS and Android!
For those who missed it, here is a link to our Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY6oyVMLLVU
This time, your favorite Assistive Technology Specialists will demonstrate how to use this app in the real world. We are taking to the sidewalks and even going off road to show you how you can use this app to navigate yourself to a specific address as well as a custom destination point that might not exist on a map.
Like its predecessor, Nearby Explorer, Indigo Nav uses GPS to provide turn by turn instructions, but this time you'll receive additional information to provide a better understanding of your surroundings. You'll hear the names of upcoming intersections and you even get your own turn signal! And just like Nearby Explore, you can use the Look Around Wand feature to get a brief description of anything you point your phone at.
That's not all! The real value of Indigo Nav is the ease by which you can search, save and store various locations. Obviously you'll want to program in your home address to navigate back to, but you could just as easily save and name any spot you visit! Searching is easy too, either enter a street address, browse nearby locations or draw information directly from your Contacts and you'll be on your way in no time!
Join Cory and Luke as we revisit the Indigo Nav App!👍 Like & Subscribe for more tips on accessibility and assistive technology!

00:00You asked for it. You get it.
00:03Indigo and a half.
00:04Pop two.
00:14Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another exciting edition of Tech Connect.
00:18And today we are going off-piste.
00:20We are going outside to experience the glory of Milwaukee in late fall.
00:26Corey, are you excited?
00:27Actually, I was sort of dreading until we saw the weather today,
00:31and it's actually halfway decent out.
00:32Yep, 64 degrees, so it should be nice.
00:35Why are we doing this, I hear you ask.
00:36Well, the point is Indigo Nav Part 2.
00:40For those who are keen watchers of the channel,
00:42you will know that we released an Indigo Nav Part 1 video recently
00:45where we talked about this navigation app, which has got some cool features.
00:49You should go and watch that video if you haven't.
00:51But we did ask the question in that video,
00:53do people want a second video where we actually go outside and use it?
00:57And what did the people say, Corey?
00:59Yeah, if you've got time.
01:01No, they said yes, please.
01:03So we will be covering a couple of things today.
01:05We're going to show creating a route.
01:08We're going to show what it sounds like when you're on route.
01:10And then we're also going to do an unfamiliar off-route waypoint.
01:17Wayfinding?
01:18Way something.
01:20So we'll be doing that as well.
01:22All right, so without further ado,
01:23let's get outside and see what Indigo Nav is all about.
01:29All right, we're standing outside Vision Forward,
01:32and we're going to head to the park
01:33because what else do you do on a beautiful, sunny November day you go to the park?
01:37Yeah.
01:37So let's open up Indigo Nav.
01:40Open Indigo Nav.
01:45There it is.
01:46I remember that noise.
01:46You remember that sound?
01:47Yep.
01:48All right, if you watched our last video,
01:50then we know we're going to go down into the tabs at the bottom.
01:53We're going to choose the route tab.
01:56Route tab.
01:57Back West Well Street, 5532.
01:59And we have a couple of options here to create a route.
02:02We want the address one.
02:04Home.
02:04But points of interest.
02:05Button.
02:05Street address.
02:06Button.
02:06Search here.
02:08We got ourselves a nice search field,
02:10and we're going to look for Doyne Park.
02:12Cap F.
02:13Cap D.
02:13Cap D.
02:14O.
02:14O.
02:14Y.
02:15Y.
02:15E.
02:15E.
02:15E.
02:15N.
02:16So I'm typing it in as we speak.
02:18A.
02:18A.
02:19R.
02:19R.
02:19J.
02:20K.
02:21K.
02:21And it's hard to hear because it's very loud out here.
02:24But let's see if we got a result.
02:26Doyne Park.
02:265300 West Well Street.
02:27There it is.
02:285300 West Well Street.
02:29So we'll choose it.
02:31All right, now we have some options to choose what type of route do we want.
02:34We can choose from pedestrian, driving, transit, Uber.
02:39But we're going to be walking, so let's choose pedestrian.
02:41Oh, really?
02:41I thought we were going to take a helicopter.
02:42Well, we could do that.
02:43That's actually not one of the options.
02:44All right, there you go.
02:45Pedestrian.
02:46Let's tap it, and it'll create the route for us.
02:48Okay, let's create.
02:54There you go.
02:555 miles to destination.
02:555 miles to destination.
02:56Facing direction is south.
02:57Proceed straight.
02:58Start going south on Anholy Road toward W.L.
03:00Street in 200 feet.
03:02Turn left.
03:02All right, so we got some really good information there letting us know how far away it is, how
03:06long it's going to take, and what our first step is.
03:09Now, real quick before we start, if we swipe through this, there is an option for more information.
03:14If we go in, then we're actually going to see each step laid out, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, all
03:19the way through however many steps it is, so you can actually review your complete route
03:25before you get going.
03:26But let's rock.
03:27Are you ready?
03:27I'm relying on you.
03:28Let's go for it.
03:34Turn left on W. Wells Street in 116 feet, destination 7 o'clock, east.
03:40Oh, we even get a little blinker noise.
03:42Check that out.
03:43I like it.
03:43All right, so it's telling us to turn left on W.S.
03:46Oh, okay, okay.
03:47See how good his cane skills are here.
03:49Oh, come up.
03:50Here we go.
03:51Oh, very good.
03:52Oh, thank you.
03:59Oh, we got our blinker noise.
04:00Hey, we're turning left.
04:03Okay, turn left, buddy.
04:05I'm following you here on the left.
04:07Follow me or are you following?
04:08Okay.
04:09I'm following you.
04:09We're going to turn left right now.
04:11You could trail.
04:11There's a grass verge on the left if you want me to trail it.
04:19This should take us right down to the parking lot.
04:21Oh, it just told us to continue straight.
04:23Oh, okay.
04:24Oh, thanks for the heads up.
04:25There are plenty of times when you might want to create a route to a place that is not on
04:34a map.
04:34It just so happens, Corey, actually, I need the bathroom, and I do see there's a port-a-potty
04:37over there in front of us.
04:39So maybe we could create a map to a map to a map to a map.
04:41You didn't know this, but I have a mission in life to go to every port-a-potty in every
04:44park in the world.
04:45How many have you done so far?
04:47Oh, this will be our first.
04:48So let's work out.
04:49All right.
04:50So I am on the route tab here, and I'm going to swipe over to waypoint.
04:53Waypoint route.
04:54Button.
04:55And we'll tap that.
04:56Record new waypoint route.
04:57Button.
04:58And our first option here is record new waypoint route or record, depending if you're a record
05:04or a record.
05:05And we're going to do this and then walk through it once so that it learns what the route is.
05:10Name.
05:11All right.
05:12We're going to give it a name.
05:15First port-a-potty on my mission to meet all port-a-potties.
05:19Why am I meeting them?
05:20I was going to say, are you like having a conversation?
05:22Are you going to sit down and have tea?
05:24All right.
05:25Let's swipe right.
05:26And we'll save it.
05:27Save.
05:28Waypoint one.
05:29First port-a-potty on my mission to meet all port-a-potties is 10 o'clock.
05:32North zero feet.
05:33All right.
05:34So let's walk it.
05:35Okay.
05:36Let's go.
05:37We're going to go over some grass here, first of all.
05:39Concrete.
05:40We're walking across a basketball court here.
05:42Okay.
05:43And we want to make sure that the dangerous part is there is a basketball net.
05:46Now we're just going to skirt it just on our right here.
05:49Now, if I'm not mistaken, while you're recording these routes, you can actually add waypoints along
05:55the route too.
05:56Oh, very nice.
05:57So if you wanted one there as a, you know, heads up that you need to walk around it.
06:01There she is.
06:02You want to say hello?
06:03Hello.
06:04Now let's stop the recording.
06:05Right.
06:06So, so far so good.
06:07But, uh, yeah.
06:08Port-a-potty.
06:09We'd have to see how well this works.
06:10Inserted port-a-potty.
06:11Save.
06:12Okay.
06:13So we saved our waypoint.
06:14Back button.
06:15Waypoint route.
06:16Heading.
06:17Location.
06:18Button.
06:19Waypoint 3.
06:20Port-a-potty is ahead.
06:21Waypoint 1.
06:22Waypoint 3.
06:23Port-a-potty.
06:24All right.
06:25So we have created our waypoint route.
06:26Yeah.
06:27Just in time, Cowie.
06:28I have to say.
06:29I'll see you later.
06:30I wouldn't go in there if I were you.
06:32Oh, oh.
06:33Hey, Cowie.
06:34What's going on there, buddy?
06:35I'm too lazy to walk.
06:36All that walking from the park.
06:37So I'm just rolling in on the track.
06:38Hey, what's up?
06:39Rolling up.
06:40Oh, wow.
06:41Uh, listen, Cowie.
06:42I know that you fed up with walking, but I have a little bit of an issue.
06:43Okay.
06:44Uh, I can't find my wallet.
06:45Pretty sure I left it in that port-a-potty.
06:46That is a you problem.
06:47It is.
06:48I'm going to make it into another problem, though.
06:49Okay.
06:50This is my suggestion.
06:51Okay.
06:52Okay.
06:53Uh, I can't find my wallet.
06:54Pretty sure I left it in that port-a-potty.
06:55That is a you problem.
06:56It is.
06:57I'm going to make it into another problem, though.
06:58Okay.
06:59This is my suggestion.
07:00Okay.
07:01I'm going to drive us down to the park and then, you know, that waypoint move that we
07:04created?
07:05Yes.
07:06Yeah.
07:07I'm going to have you just use that.
07:08You can walk out to that port-a-potty and pick up my wallet for me.
07:10Will you buy lunch?
07:11Mmm.
07:12Sure.
07:13All right.
07:14Deal.
07:15Let's do it.
07:16Let's do it.
07:17All right.
07:18I agreed to go get Luke's wallet, even though it's in the port-a-potty, but that's okay.
07:22We have a waypoint route recorded, so let's just go to our routes tab here.
07:26Roots tab.
07:27Back button.
07:28And let's find waypoint.
07:29Create route.
07:30Look around.
07:31GPS.
07:32Home.
07:33Points event.
07:34Street address.
07:35Contact.
07:36Waypoint route.
07:37Here we go.
07:38Record new waypoint route.
07:39And let's see if we can find an existing.
07:40Swipe right.
07:41Load existing waypoint route.
07:42There we go.
07:43Load existing waypoint route.
07:44Add waypoint.
07:45Dimmed.
07:46Button.
07:47And let's see if we can find ours.
07:48First port-a-potty on my mission to meet all port-a-potties.
07:49That's the one.
07:50Let's tap on here.
07:51First port-a-potty on my mission to meet all port-a-potties.
07:545,300.
07:55Story Hill.
07:56Milwaukee.
07:57Wisconsin is 11 o'clock.
07:58East 166 feet.
07:59All right.
08:00So it tells us our first waypoint on our route is a little bit at 11 o'clock.
08:06I think it said 300 and some feet.
08:08So let's get going and see if we can find it.
08:11All right.
08:12I think I'm getting kind of close.
08:21I'm going to stop and let's check our waypoint.
08:24Waypoint three.
08:25Quarter-potty is 11 o'clock.
08:27Northeast 11 feet.
08:28All right.
08:29We know we're close.
08:30We're going to make that turn.
08:32And oh, I think we're here.
08:36Waypoint three.
08:37Quarter-potty is ahead.
08:38North three feet.
08:39Three feet.
08:40But it's not really three feet.
08:41I'm here.
08:42All right.
08:43Wish me luck.
08:44I'm going to go in.
08:45I'm going to see if I can find his wallet.
08:47Oh, my God.
08:51It's gross in here.
08:53Oh, help me.
08:54Oh, here's his wallet.
08:56Aha.
08:57Success.
08:58Well, Corey, you did successfully find my wallet, but I have to say there was quite a bit of editing magic that went into that.
09:08Yeah.
09:09I'll be honest.
09:10It probably, well, I don't even know how it's going to look after editing, but we did have an issue with the waypoint route.
09:15I like the idea.
09:16I don't know.
09:17Two things.
09:18Yeah.
09:19I don't know if we were doing it wrong.
09:20And if we were, I went, you went to look up the Indigo Nav user guide online and couldn't access it.
09:27I tried using under settings going to help.
09:30There's an audio tutorial and a user manual, but neither of those would load either.
09:35Yeah.
09:36So we may be doing the waypoint routes wrong.
09:39And if we are, please put it down in the comments and let us know how we're doing it wrong.
09:43Well, people won't know because we're going to make it look so smooth.
09:46I don't even think they can make that look smooth.
09:48It was a bit of a nightmare trying to get it to work.
09:51It was.
09:52But other than that, Corey, how did you find the app?
09:54Yeah.
09:55I mean, okay.
09:56So from a GPS perspective, great.
09:57It does a good job.
09:58I like some of the sound cues.
10:00The blinker is kind of cool when turns are coming.
10:02So everything I like, the only two issues was one we just talked about the waypoint.
10:06The other one I had an issue with was a bit of it when it's announcing streets as you approach them.
10:12I would prefer my own preference.
10:15I would like them to announce the street, maybe 30, 40 feet ahead of you saying approaching such and such street in 40 feet.
10:24Even if you're not turning on it, it gives you a heads up that you've got a street coming.
10:27Yeah.
10:28But instead, in the demo, you saw we were pretty much at the street, if not a couple of feet into the street before it announced it.
10:39So not a huge deal, more maybe of a personal preference for me.
10:43All right, Corey.
10:44Well, with that being said, I think we have done our work for today.
10:46So why don't we get out of here?
10:48Yeah, I think we're going to get out of here.
10:49Yeah.
10:50And guess what?
10:51What?
10:52I think I'm driving.
10:53What?
10:54It's a good job he's got Indigo Nav.
10:56That's all I can say.
11:00I got my cane too.
11:01So don't you worry about that.
11:03I feel so safe.
11:04Oh, I'm too tall.
11:09All right, Corey.
11:10Whenever you're ready.
11:11No one needs seat belts.
11:13Let's go.
11:18The ending scene is a joke that is not meant to be taken as safety advice.
11:22Vision Forward does not recommend folks drive while blind, even while using the Indigo Nav app.
11:27It's because of the strikeouts.
11:28You must be scared of the other.
11:29You must be scared of the other.
11:31Can't sit down?
11:32I snored in the building.
11:33Okay.
11:34I'm so sorry.
11:35You will see the end of here.
11:36I could say that in the first place.
11:37You can think of the hole in the bottom.
11:38There's no one's going to be careful.
11:39You're never going to be careful.
11:40You're going to be careful.
11:41You're going to focus.
11:42That's the way that you're going to find a vector.
11:43How the stream is going to be called?
11:44What's going on?
11:45You'll have to choose.
11:47The top of this plan is the top of this plan.
11:49That's the top of this plan.
