00:00I do not regret the year that was cut off from my head and thrown out in the garbage can.
00:06Because it's all those things that made me what I am.
00:10And what I am is one bad son of a bitch.
00:14Nick Foley, the underdog who became a champion.
00:17I gotta tell you, this feels pretty damn good.
00:21The champion who became a Hall of Famer.
00:23It's the moments of greatness that go on to define who we are.
00:28Whether under the guise of mankind.
00:31There's no place like home.
00:33Dude love.
00:34Have mercy.
00:36Or even Cactus Jack.
00:37Bang bang.
00:38There has never been a WWE superstar quite like the legendary Nick Foley.
00:43Yo Adrian, I did it.
00:45Today we look back at the very best of the hardcore legend.
00:49This is WWE's Greatest Moments.
00:55Have a nice day.
00:58Acknowledge me.
01:00Oh my God.
01:02No call to the bear man.
01:03This is surreal.
01:06Look at this.
01:08It landed.
01:14Welcome everyone to WWE's Greatest Moments.
01:17I'm Michael Cole.
01:18And on this edition, we're looking back at some of the greatest moments of one of the true icons of our business.
01:24Mick Foley.
01:24Foley was nothing like professional wrestling had ever seen before.
01:28A performer who put his body in harm's way for the entertainment of audiences everywhere.
01:35Mankind from 15 feet.
01:38What do you got that to the canvas?
01:40Early on in his career, Mick Foley as Cactus Jack was uncontrollable and unnerving.
01:45And his debut on national television was anything but ordinary.
01:50There you see that box of Sting sees it.
01:55I was in this giant oversized gift box getting ready to break through for the most important moment of my career.
02:04Here's your winner, Sting.
02:07It's like, I have to make every moment count.
02:12Cactus Jack just ran through Theodore Long.
02:15He's attacking Sting.
02:17When Nick stepped in the ring with Sting, Nick had an opportunity to show everyone just how ahead of the game he truly was.
02:24I dropped the best elbow of my entire career on Sting, who'd stood there and took it and made me look like I was somebody.
02:40That was one of the most important nights of my entire career.
02:43When you think of hardcore wrestling, two names come to mind, Cactus Jack and Terry Funk.
02:54These two legends went to absolute war against each other for years overseas with such extreme battles that American audiences hadn't seen at the time.
03:02That is, until ECW provided the platform.
03:06It was at Hostile City Showdown, 1995, that Cactus and Funk showed the states just how hardcore they could get.
03:17Terry Funk, you're one of the toughest, but I've got this, Jack!
03:22This should be an outstanding, hardcore matchup!
03:26Terry was my mentor, he was my idol, but he made you work.
03:31Cactus going out after Terry Funk!
03:33I would put my body on the line.
03:36For me?
03:37Funk hammering Cactus!
03:39Whips Funk into the table!
03:41I want that crowd to continue to say, we love wrestling.
03:47Oh my, Cactus misses!
03:49With him and Terry Funk bringing all of this from Japan, no one had ever seen anything like that before.
03:56Oh my!
03:57It might not look that revolutionary to today's eye, but back then it was 100% the alternative.
04:04And the way the fire is flickering off that mass of blood on my face was, like, oddly beautiful.
04:19Did he tell the chance!
04:24Cactus Jack defeated Terry Funk, but at what cost?
04:29I left that match in much worse shape than I entered it.
04:32Now everyone knew Mick Foley was a main event performer.
04:38By the end of 1995, Cactus Jack had grown tired of the extreme nature of ECW, stemming from a sign in the crowd directed at his three-year-old son.
04:50Dewey Foley is a three-year-old boy.
04:55You're sick, son of a bitch!
04:56Cactus renounced the hardcore ways of the promotion and felt the fans had become too bloodthirsty.
05:02He let his feelings known in one of the most memorable promos of all time.
05:09Professional wrestling will never be respected.
05:13No matter how many teeth I lose.
05:15No matter how many ears I lose.
05:19No matter how many brain cells have to die!
05:21I thought there was a little bit of that feeling of being confined to doing what the crowd wanted us to do, and then not having them appreciate it.
05:30Where have we really come to lying in a hospital bed in Munich, Germany, watching my ear being thrown out into a garbage can, not being able to take it on the trip back, because I don't know the German word for formaldehyde.
05:49Mick was at the forefront of the whole hardcore movement, if you will.
05:54It was a thought, almost unimaginable, that Cactus Jack could turn on the ECW audience.
06:00I've sacrificed myself for the past ten years and left the better parts of my past lying on concrete floors!
06:08You could tell that Mick really meant what he was saying.
06:12What the f*** you?
06:14Who the hell do you think you are?
06:16And so I actually said the f*** you out loud to the audience, because I meant it.
06:21We're not a wrestling organization anymore!
06:24We're the world's damn biggest puppet show!
06:28Mick Foley would make his way to WWE in 1996 and take on a new persona, the deranged mankind.
06:35I'm finally creating my very own symphony of destruction.
06:43The boiler room dweller was unlike anything WWE audiences had ever seen before.
06:50Jim Ross was tasked with getting to know more about this unorthodox superstar in a tell-all interview we wouldn't soon forget.
06:56What do you think the biggest misconceptions are that the WWF fans have as it relates to mankind?
07:06That I'm a bad person.
07:10The Mick Foley interviews, this was an opportunity for Mick to share.
07:15They were throwing worms at me, Jimmy.
07:18So I picked up the largest specimen, Jimmy, and I sucked it down!
07:22You think girls wanted to kiss a boy who had worms on his breath?
07:27I'm a good tisser!
07:29I said, what if I gave completely honest dancers, but I do them in the character of Mankind?
07:36And I was asked, like, do you think you could do that?
07:38And I said, oh, I know I can.
07:40I made a movie about myself where I was a wrestler.
07:44I was dude love.
07:46We're here for only one reason.
07:47One reason only.
07:49Fame.
07:50Honor.
07:51Fortune.
07:52Glory.
07:53He would shoot these funny little films.
07:54I just remember hearing the stories of him jumping off the roof of his house into a bunch of boxes.
08:03The character Mankind was a piece of who Mick Foley was.
08:08I walked out the first time I saw a barbed wire in place of ring ropes, and I said, I'm finally home!
08:15Already a week goes by that people don't ask me about those interviews.
08:18We felt like we had something special.
08:21If there's something wrong with my mind, I think I'd be the first one to know.
08:26I consider that interview with Jim Ross to be on the list of the ten best things I've ever done.
08:32And I was a made man from that moment on.
08:35Mrs. Foley's little boy is finally home!
08:40We learned that as a child, Foley had created a character named Dude Love.
08:44Dude Love is here!
08:45Who made his WWE debut that summer.
08:48Taking some serious, serious, ask me another question because that dude is honorable!
08:55The dude was scheduled to take on Hunter Hearst Helmsley in a Falls Count Anywhere match on Raw.
09:00With so many faces of Foley, you never knew what to expect.
09:06Hunter Hearst Helmsley set to meet Dude Love in a Falls Count Anywhere matchup.
09:12Balls Count Anywhere, well, that's not exactly my bag, baby.
09:18Dude Love was kind of like the comedy character.
09:21Mankind, my main mandible, up high, big man.
09:24Oh, you're too slow.
09:28Mankind, he was a sympathetic person.
09:31Mankind, but there's that other guy.
09:33Cactus Jack!
09:35He's back!
09:36Somebody sniked me!
09:38I thought he was dead!
09:38He's alive!
09:40He's alive!
09:41It may be the darkest day of your life.
09:44Cactus Jack was a psycho.
09:45Bang, bang!
09:46For a man that has wrestled on nails in barbed wire, this will be a day at Central Park!
09:56And in comes Cactus Jack, a character that Mr. McMahon did not think would ever step foot inside a WWE ring.
10:05It becomes the biggest response I've ever received.
10:09And we've never seen Cactus Jack in the WWF until tonight!
10:14It was like a dream come true, Cactus Jack in Madison Square Garden.
10:18And I grew up taking trains there, hitchhiking, and now we are rocking the house.
10:23This match has no disqualifications.
10:26It balls down anywhere!
10:28Imagine you're sitting in a seat as a fan, and then, not so long after, you are now debuting and performing in Madison Square Garden, where you used to be as a kid.
10:40Kudos to Mick.
10:42Cactus Jack wins!
10:44By 1998, the Mankind character saw some drastic changes.
10:51Drew, I know that Vinny's got a sweet tooth!
10:54Especially when it came to the boss, Mr. McMahon.
11:00Mr. McMahon was hooked up to a heart monitor and a respirator in a hospital due to a bruised ankle.
11:06And he was the ultimate cranky patient.
11:08Easy.
11:09God.
11:10Just easy.
11:11So when I showed up at the hospital in East Lansing, Michigan...
11:15You're not proud, upside down!
11:18Vince, it's me!
11:20It was with the idea that I was going to cheer him up.
11:22I don't want any visitors!
11:24And he pulls out this sock and he puts his hand through it, and he's got Socko painted on it.
11:29Mr. Socko!
11:31Say hello to Mr. Socko!
11:33I don't think anybody else thought it at the time that that moment would turn into one of the things that Nick Foley is remembered for.
11:42It's Socko!
11:43The Man of the Claw with Mr. Socko!
11:46Socko being part of the WWE ethos, still now, cinema.
11:51And now you, too, can be a part of the rave and rage of Mr. Socko with your very own Mr. Socko t-shirt.
11:58The character had endeared himself to people.
12:01It was one of the best things to ever happen to me.
12:07In 2004, Randy Orton was a brash up-and-coming star who dubbed himself a legend killer.
12:13Making a name by attacking and disrespecting those who paved the way.
12:18You're not a legend.
12:21You're a coward!
12:25One instance led to him disgracefully spitting in the face of Foley.
12:30And when it came time for the two to be face-to-face one more time, things got heated.
12:38I'd like you to just spit in my face again.
12:45There you go!
12:46Mick Foley allowed me to spit in his face because we knew that the fans would just despise me for it.
12:55And they did.
12:56And it's still only spit. It's still just spit.
12:59Randy, you gotta realize...
13:00I go on to say, this is not a big deal.
13:02I'm a father of four.
13:04I've been thrown up on, I've peed on, I've been pooped on.
13:07So being spit on by you one more time is not really a big deal.
13:11You knew that something deeper was gonna come out of Mick Foley.
13:15You can't just go and spit on Mick Foley and not expect repercussions.
13:18When you spit in my face, you spit on my name, you spit on my legacy, you spit on the very business that I love.
13:30And I cannot, cannot, cannot, cannot, cannot accept that.
13:36He knew how to garner any kind of emotion that he wanted to elicit at any specific time.
13:42Not only will I accept that hate that exists in my heart, I will welcome it home as a long-lost friend.
13:48It's all about finding that resolve inside of you and bringing that, you know, monster back to the surface.
13:54Because I worked too hard and suffered too long to have my reputation taught about by you, you little bastard.
14:01And it turned out to be, I think, the best storyline I was in.
14:06By 2006, Mick Foley certainly had a Hall of Fame resume.
14:09But he always felt like something was missing, his WrestleMania moment.
14:15While Mick had several WrestleMania bouts, he never felt like he stole the show.
14:20A highly regarded matchup on the grandest stage of them all can undoubtedly cement one's legacy.
14:25And Mick Foley wanted just that.
14:28Mick Foley has gone from being a hardcore legend to a cuddly teddy bear.
14:33You and me and WrestleMania in a hardcore match.
14:39This match is a hardcore match.
14:44If you are on WrestleMania and your goal is not to steal the show, you don't belong at WrestleMania.
14:50He hit it!
14:51He hit it!
14:52The spear!
14:52Wait a minute.
14:53Foley had barbed wire underneath that shirt wrapped around his chest?
14:56This was a different match in that it almost felt like the audience was worried.
15:02White to the face, right between the eyes of that, he's busted open!
15:05Oh, God.
15:07There's just a crescendo of reactions.
15:10Oh, no.
15:10Contacts!
15:11Oh, take a look at it!
15:12Take a look at it!
15:13Take a look at it!
15:13Oh, my!
15:14Oh!
15:15Oh!
15:16When you're in the heat of the moment, you're all in and you're doing it.
15:20And you have to be.
15:22Because otherwise, there's no way you can pull it off.
15:25Oh, my God.
15:26Oh, my God.
15:26Here we go.
15:27Oh, my God.
15:28What's going to happen?
15:29Look at it!
15:31Oh, my God!
15:32I knew, without a doubt, I just had my WrestleMania moment.
15:36Cover!
15:37One, two, three!
15:40I think it's the most violent match in the history of WrestleMania.
15:43And I knew that wouldn't be forgotten.
15:46What's up, Brian?
15:47Awesome.
15:48There's a smell of forearm hair burning.
15:51A little bit of skin as well.
15:52Knowing that Edge and I created that moment together, knowing that I have that exclamation point
15:58at the end of my career, it means I can appreciate it every single day.
16:03Mick Foley has more heart than perhaps any superstar we've ever seen.
16:12Bruno Sammartino.
16:15Hulk Hogan.
16:16Stone Cold Steve Austin.
16:18They all have one thing in common.
16:21The illustrious WWE Championship.
16:24The richest prize in the game was an achievement that Mick Foley never thought would be his.
16:28That is, until one unforgettable night on Raw in 1999.
16:35As you stand in the middle of the Rock's ring, you're not worthy of being a world champ.
16:40What I'm going to do very simply is beat the living hell out of you.
16:46Mankind was set to face off against WWE Champion The Rock in one of the most emotional moments
16:51in the life of Mick Foley.
16:56The championship is up for grabs.
16:58The Rock against Mankind.
17:01I, in my heart, don't feel like I'm WWE title material.
17:07He didn't look like a superhero.
17:09He looked like an everyday guy.
17:11This was the cool kid versus the outcast.
17:14It was a recipe for fans to hate me.
17:19Oh, we got big problems here now!
17:24He's up against the odds with an opponent like The Rock.
17:28And then...
17:29It just felt beautiful after all these years working.
17:53It felt like more of a lifetime achievement award than a WWE title.
17:59I gotta tell you, this feels pretty damn good.
18:03The world loves an underdog story.
18:06And we got to live that in Mick Foley.
18:08I like to dedicate this match to my two little people at home and say,
18:14I got to go dead!
18:15It is now time for our number one moment.
18:23One of the greatest rivals in the career of Mick Foley has been that of The Undertaker.
18:27Over the years, these two would wage war in some of the craziest matches we'd ever see.
18:33A boiler room brawl.
18:35A buried alive match.
18:37Mankind is not moving.
18:38And their most infamous one.
18:41Inside the demonic Hell in a Cell.
18:46The Hell in a Cell match is officially underway.
18:50When Undertaker and Mick Foley start walking around up there,
18:53it's obvious that it is not safe to be on top of Hell in a Cell.
18:57And they get to the edge.
18:58And there's no warning of this.
19:01Undertaker just grabs Mick Foley.
19:04Oh, man!
19:06The God Almighty!
19:07The God Almighty!
19:08They've killed him!
19:09God is my witness!
19:11He is broken in half!
19:12It's one of the most iconic moments in WWE history.
19:18He getting up for this.
19:20Look, look!
19:20And look at him.
19:21You're kidding me!
19:22How in the hell is he standing?
19:23Oh, my God!
19:25I'm like, that's the toughest son of a bitch right there I have ever seen in my life.
19:29It's time!
19:30It's going back up!
19:31No way!
19:32And so is The Undertaker!
19:33No way!
19:34It makes him look like a superhuman.
19:36just by doing that and surviving and then coming back.
19:40He throws him off on the other side!
19:42There's...
19:42Oh!
19:43That's it!
19:44He's dead!
19:45When The Undertaker chokeslam me and I go through, that chair follows me down.
19:50It smashes into my face.
19:54Still missing those teeth.
19:55And one of them ends up lodged in my nostril.
19:58and seeing his tooth come out of his nose, it was just all so real.
20:03He's a different being, Mick Foley, man.
20:09And that night, he proved that to the world.
20:14Even with the loss in the record books that night, Mick Foley proved that he will go through
20:18anything and still fight back.
20:20There's no doubt Foley cemented the respect that fans worldwide have for him that night.
20:25The Hardcore Legend turned WWE Hall of Famer has proven time and time again that dreams do come true.
20:33There will never ever be another Mick Foley.
20:37Well, that'll do it for this edition of WWE's Greatest Moments.
20:39I hope you've enjoyed this look back at some of the best moments of the one and only Mick Foley.
20:45Have a nice day!
20:46We'll see you next time.
