00:29To jest W.W.E.'s Gratest Moments.
00:38Acknowledge me.
00:39My God!
00:41To the beer man!
00:43This is surreal!
00:45Look at that!
00:46It's landed!
00:52Welcome everyone to W.W.E.'s Gratest Moments.
00:56I'm Michael Cole, and on this edition, we're looking back at some of the wildest moments to ever happen on late-night television.
01:02The destination program known as Saturday Night's Main Event.
01:07The original run of Saturday Night's Main Event began in 1985 as a special during the time slot coveted by the massive hit, Saturday Night Live.
01:16Saturday Night Live will not be seen tonight, so we can bring you the following entertainment special.
01:21So kick back and relax for Saturday Night's Main Event.
01:25For the first time in nearly 30 years, professional wrestling was back on network television.
01:33NBC will soon begin a regular late-night television program combining rock, comedy, and wrestling.
01:39Executive producer Dick Ebersole explains why.
01:42The wrestling is not really the most important thing. It's the drama and the theater of it all.
01:46Dick suggested to Vince that he change his product around a little bit to make it more massive appeal.
01:54Welcome to the greatest festival in wrestling, Saturday Night's Main Event!
01:59But the first one on Mother's Day weekend, May 11th, 1985.
02:05Big show, for sure. I remember Nassau Coliseum in New York.
02:09I mean, it was like a big, bright, light show.
02:12And a huge slam to the canvas.
02:14Drop the elbow, that's a thunder.
02:16When NBC had these matches, kind of the old-school wrestling sensibility merged with a bigger television presence.
02:23Let's go down to ringside for what we call Piper's Pit.
02:28I don't know what it's like myself, but you are a loser.
02:30To be on network TV, especially taking the place of Saturday Night Live, it was huge.
02:36Oh, yeah! Look at this!
02:39You know, what was so cool about Saturday Night's Main Event, it was entertaining!
02:42You know, my mother's never been in New York before, and I thought this was a very special time to bring up her mother's name.
02:47We had a Mother's Day party.
02:49What a party, by the way, Cindy.
02:50Oh, thank you very much. I hope everybody's having a good time.
02:53It definitely fits the spectacle of what WWE at the time was trying to do.
02:58We'll get you back to more action. Don't go away.
03:00Trying to capture as many viewers as possible.
03:03Look at the animal!
03:04And it was the highest-rated show of the year in that time period.
03:08We certainly hope that you had an extraordinary time. We certainly did.
03:14WWE certainly captured new fans with Saturday Night's Main Event, which meant even more eyes on Hulk Hogan.
03:21The greatest professional athlete in the world today!
03:25In February 1992, tensions were mounting between Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice.
03:29And when Hulk Hogan was named number one contender for the WWE Championship, Sid was none too pleased.
03:36Hulk Hogan!
03:37Is it because I'm not a big movie star like Hulk Hogan, the big, immortal one himself?
03:44It came time to take on Ric Flair and The Undertaker in a tag-team match.
03:48Would the two superstars be able to put that all behind them?
03:51Or will justice be served?
03:54And there's a tag!
03:59So, let's see what the Hulkster can do!
04:03That was like the beginning of our feud.
04:05At that point, the biggest thing that I've ever been a part of.
04:08Submission home applied!
04:11Hogan reaching for the tag!
04:13What's going on?
04:14We knew we were on to something big.
04:17We had to build this story slow, but we had to keep the momentum building.
04:21Hogan reaching for the tag!
04:23Subject!
04:24Hogan reaching for the tag!
04:27Here it is!
04:28No!
04:29Justice!
04:31What's he doing?
04:33Justice is turning his power!
04:35Oh, Hogan!
04:36He's taking it!
04:39He was just the opposite of my character.
04:41He was the bad boy.
04:42Like, the evil kid.
04:44Justice has been served!
04:45It has not!
04:46Don't get any better than that.
04:48To me, I think it made my whole career.
04:50Justice walked out of Hogan!
04:53WWE fans had always tuned in to see the action and mayhem inside the square and circle.
04:59But Saturday night's main event provided much more than that.
05:02You are Uncle Elmer.
05:04And right neighbor, I'm Uncle Elmer.
05:06A good old Uncle Elmer is a very likeable guy.
05:10He's a lot of fun.
05:11And congratulations in order to you, Uncle Elmer, because you're going to be tying the knot.
05:15And we'll get married.
05:16That's right.
05:17I sure am.
05:18In 1985, Uncle Elmer was set to wed his longtime girlfriend, Joyce, in what would be the first
05:24wedding on network television in well over a decade.
05:27Oh!
05:28Oh!
05:29Really?
05:30Uncle Elmer's wedding was the first nationally televised wedding since Tiny Tim got married
05:39on The Tonight Show.
05:40And that was a huge ratings monster.
05:43So I think WWE was hoping for some of the same with Uncle Elmer.
05:48It's been Gene Oakland playing the wedding crown.
05:51Oh!
05:52Look at that.
05:53Now that is beautiful.
05:54It's a hillbilly wedding.
05:55You've never been to a function like that.
05:57Like, what better way to experience new cultures than to watch it on television?
06:01All right, here it comes now, Jess.
06:03I cannot love a WWE wedding.
06:06You just know that everything's going to go perfectly and nothing's going to go wrong.
06:10The ultimate villain, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
06:16The ultimate villain, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
06:29What I remember most about Uncle Elmer's wedding was Jesse Ventura's commentary specifically
06:36when the two of them kissing looked like...
06:38Two carp in the Mississippi River going after the same piece of glory.
06:42That was over 40 years ago and I can recall it verbatim.
06:46Just a great line.
06:47All right, Elmer!
06:49You did it!
06:50You did it, Elmer!
06:51The Uncle Elmer wedding was completely legit.
06:54He really did get married.
06:56So if you love live weddings, WWE was the only place to be.
07:01Still to come.
07:06This man's the star of the 90s.
07:08Go!
07:11In its first year, Saturday night's main event was proving to be a ratings hit.
07:15Professional wrestling was on the main stage of a nationally broadcast network.
07:19And audiences couldn't get enough.
07:21Needless to say, if you wanted to make a name for yourself, Saturday night was the place to do it.
07:27Jake the Snake Roberts was a prime example.
07:30If you keep playing with snakes, you're gonna get bit.
07:35In May 1986, the snake was set to do battle against the beloved Ricky the Dragon Steamboat.
07:40What followed was one of the most volatile acts in Saturday night's main event history.
07:47Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, one of the most popular athletes in the World Wrestling Federation today.
07:51Saying hello.
07:52Off the road now.
07:54Ooh!
07:55What a close line!
07:56The match has not even started yet.
07:58It was a really serious atmosphere and moment.
08:11My head legitimately hit the cement.
08:14Oh, no!
08:15Steamboat!
08:16Unconscious!
08:17He has to be totally ill about it!
08:20I damn near herniated myself trying to get him into the ring.
08:23No, he was horrifying, man.
08:25Oh, yeah.
08:26I think Damien's coming out with some air.
08:28Ah!
08:29Look at that snake!
08:30Ah!
08:31You see Ricky Steamboat cover with that snake.
08:33Jake kind of choking him, taunting him with the head of Damien.
08:36Like his mouth!
08:37That's the worst thing I've ever seen in my life!
08:39They're starting to send people from the back out there to check.
08:42I'm screaming, look at what you made me do.
08:46Backstage with the doc.
08:47I didn't have any concussionary after effects.
08:51But the whole side of my face blew up.
08:53The dreaded steel cage match was a sight to behold.
08:58And when steel surrounds the squared circle, audiences paid attention.
09:02Two opponents are locked in to settle their differences.
09:05And the only way to win is to escape the cage.
09:08In January 1987, the rivalry between Hulk Hogan and Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff
09:13had reached its boiling point.
09:15This steel cage is a dead end for Mr. Wonder.
09:19The two were set to wage war inside the structure.
09:22With a controversial ending the likes that network television hadn't seen before.
09:32First time ever a steel cage match has been on network television.
09:36Rivalry was built up so strong.
09:38Can't have the whole package for a bad guy.
09:40Hall Andorff wasting no time at all!
09:44Mr. Wonderful has started the match off quick!
09:46Everybody was talking about this.
09:49They're going up opposite sides!
09:51Mr. Wonderful's gaining on him!
09:54Oh, he's done!
09:55Wonderful will first!
09:57Hulk Hogan's feet and Paul Orndorff's feet touched the ground at exactly the same time.
10:03It was a tie!
10:05A steel cage match cannot end in a tie!
10:08The referee has instructed Paul Blasler to continue the match!
10:13He's done!
10:14He's done!
10:15He's done!
10:16He's done!
10:17He's done!
10:18He's done!
10:19He's done!
10:20He's done!
10:21He's done!
10:22He's done!
10:23And drops the leg of the champion!
10:25Orndorff did a great job.
10:26The entertainment factor was at an all-time high and we did pull it off.
10:30Successful title advance!
10:32Best cage match probably ever.
10:34People still talk about that cage match.
10:37Still to come.
10:38This ain't the movies here!
10:39Mega power!
10:40Mega power!
10:41Mega power!
10:42Hey, you!
10:43What do you think you're doing there?
10:44Are you talking to me, sir?
10:45Yeah, I'm talking to you!
10:46I ain't no sir!
10:47I'm the Mountie!
10:48One of the most reviled superstars in 1992 was the man known as the Mountie.
10:51The corrupted Canadian officer carried around a cattle prod to shock respect out of his opponents.
11:04The Mountie always gets his back!
11:08And when Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated him for the Intercontinental Championship, the Mountie vowed to teach the Hot Rod some law and order.
11:17I'm gonna take my instant battle back tonight!
11:23We're gonna have some fun here on Saturday Night's Main event!
11:26We're ready for our first match-up!
11:28The Mountie, he did a lot of damage, not only to WWE superstars, but to the reputation of Mounties all over Canada.
11:36And now, look out here comes a bulldog!
11:38No, look at that!
11:39Hit the referee!
11:40I love villains who cheated and I love villains who had gimmicks.
11:45Oh, wait a minute!
11:46It's a shot stick!
11:47He's gonna shock it!
11:48I still remember the shotgun happening.
11:52Wait a minute!
11:53That's it!
11:54No!
11:55No running, Piper!
11:56How can it be?
11:57Look in the air!
11:58Piper has it in his head!
12:00Piper knows how to play dirty.
12:02Fighting fire with fire.
12:04What should he do?
12:05He should let him out!
12:07No, no, no!
12:08Oh, yeah!
12:09Put him on for a play!
12:11Piper gets rid of the shot stick!
12:13The shot stick!
12:14The referee comes around!
12:16He hooks the leg!
12:17Two, three!
12:18Oh, yeah!
12:19The referee!
12:20He shocked him!
12:21He shocked him!
12:22Can you believe it, man?
12:23It seems like everything we tried to do against Piper, nothing ever worked!
12:26Ah!
12:27Shocked him!
12:28He had a vest on that the shock stick couldn't work with!
12:32I still love it to this day!
12:34It was just like, what the hell is going on?
12:36You gave us all that, huh?
12:39You gotta have credit where credit's due.
12:41I think it's a very clever piece of business to throw in there.
12:48Hulkamania was indeed running wild in 1989.
12:51The immortal Hulk Hogan was not only WWE Champion, a network TV star, but a Hollywood main eventer with the theatrical release of No Holds Barred.
13:06Back in WWE, Hogan had his own problems in the form of the big boss man for the WWE Championship inside a dreaded steel cage.
13:14Tonight, there's gonna be a big surprise!
13:19A surprise!
13:23What is going on?
13:24Zeus wants a real white confrontation here, McMahon!
13:29This ain't the movies here!
13:31Zeus is a crazy monster.
13:33Who the size of that monster?
13:35Watching Zeus and Hogan kind of square up, knowing that they're in this movie together.
13:40Kicked to the chest area by Zeus!
13:42That's kind of part of the magic of why you fall in love with pro wrestling.
13:45Zeus is just leaving him laying!
13:48And Hogan's still got it contained with the boss here!
13:51The first man out of the cage wins!
13:54His throw to the top of the cage! Hogan, bring it on!
13:57A suplex!
13:58I can't believe it!
13:59I've never seen a suplex at the top of the cage before!
14:02I mean, everybody in the audience and everybody behind the stage, we were going,
14:10Oh! Did that really happen?
14:13For Hulk to do a big move like the superplex, people go, Oh my God! This is incredible!
14:19Hulk saved those for special moments.
14:21Hogan wins!
14:23That is your champion!
14:24That was a crazy night because we had such a great reception.
14:30There was perhaps no hotter team in the 1980s than Axe and Smash of Demolition.
14:35The duo dominated the squared circle, quickly capturing the tag team championships at WrestleMania 4.
14:45For the next 16 months, many tried and many failed to dethrone the champions.
14:53Heading into their historic 478th day as the title holders, Demolition were set to lock up on network television against the skilled combination of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, the Brain Busters.
15:12Demolition was on 478 days as tag team champions, so I remember watching Demolition growing up and just being like, Oh, these guys are never gonna lose.
15:22And they are intimidating. Just to take a look at them is intimidating.
15:27As a kid, you're watching this, you have these two, like, almost literal monsters, face paint, black leather spikes.
15:33Like, my money would not have been on the Brain Busters.
15:37To have this new team come in that were hot, they had Heenan in their corner, it was a big deal.
15:42We got total chance, I saw a ball cut!
15:44Wait a minute, Arn Anderson threw a chair in the ring, Tully Blanchard!
15:47Oh!
15:48Oh!
15:49He hit Smash with the chair!
15:50Arn Anderson covering one, two, three, they get it!
15:54Demolition, they lose on live national television to the Brain Busters.
15:58So this was something that a whole new audience was seeing their first title change.
16:03Demolition!
16:04Demolition!
16:05It's invisible!
16:06And we know who we are!
16:09Bravo!
16:16Up next, it's our final 2 moments on the countdown.
16:18What will take the number 1 spot?
16:20spot.
16:23Throughout the
16:24years, Saturday night's main event was the stage
16:26for many WWE superstars
16:28to shine on late night network
16:30television. And that's exactly what
16:32Shawn Michaels did in November of 1992.
16:34The heartbreak kid was rapidly
16:36climbing the ranks of WWE
16:38and found himself in an intercontinental
16:40championship match against the British
16:42Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith.
16:47Intercontinental championship
16:48matchup. The British Bulldog
16:50swearing up against Shawn Michaels.
16:52The intercontinental title is
16:54the workhorse title, especially back
16:56then. This was the title that
16:58was grooming the next world champion.
17:01Right now, you're likely to see
17:02a classic wrestling encounter.
17:04In my mind, it's like, oh my goodness, this is an
17:06opportunity for me maybe to establish
17:08myself as a top guy, so to speak.
17:10Look at that. Did you see that maneuver?
17:13Look at that. Look at that.
17:14And it's in the covering
17:17off of that buckle. There's a steel ring
17:19underneath that. Turned back up.
17:20What was so special and so remarkable about
17:22Shawn's style was that it's timeless.
17:25You could place that work from that
17:26time and have it in a match today
17:28and it still holds up.
17:30Oh. Wait a minute.
17:33No.
17:34Yes.
17:34Yes.
17:35We got a new
17:36NCAA medal champion.
17:38At the time, there was a shock that the
17:40Bulldog had lost the title.
17:41When you get that title, you're pretty much
17:51saying to the world, I'm on my way to become
17:52world champion.
17:53This man's the star of the 90s.
17:55Intercontinental champion,
17:57Shawn Michaels.
17:59It is now time for our number one moment.
18:02In October 1987,
18:04Macho Man Randy Savage had become one of the
18:06most popular WWE superstars
18:08of the era.
18:08They can't handle the Macho Man Randy Savage.
18:11The cream of the crop.
18:12Nobody does it better.
18:14There was no denying how captivating Savage was
18:17as Macho Madness swept the nation.
18:19Needless to say, Savage was the odds-on favorite
18:21when taking on Intercontinental champion
18:23the Honky Tonk Man.
18:25Macho Man, you sure can't dance like
18:27the Honky Tonk Man.
18:29This time, however, Macho Man
18:31had some mega backup.
18:33Welcome to this capacity crowd
18:39at the Hershey Park Arena.
18:41Macho Man was the first thing that I wanted
18:43to be when I grew up.
18:44He was so special and so amazing.
18:46He leaves.
18:48Yes.
18:48A new champion to be proud.
18:51Brett is a president.
18:52He's in trouble right now.
18:53I'm saying.
18:54Look what the Hart Foundation is doing to Randy Savage.
18:56And then to see this moment
18:59where he's vulnerable.
19:02Oh, my goodness.
19:04Elizabeth almost struck by the Honky Tonk Man.
19:07You don't know.
19:08Oh, no.
19:09At that instant, when I pushed her,
19:12that was really, really a big deal.
19:15My gosh.
19:16Has he got anybody that's going to come to help him?
19:17Is anybody that's going to save him?
19:19Wait a minute.
19:19Elizabeth is back.
19:21Elizabeth is coming back.
19:22What courage and what brilliance this lady has.
19:25It was crazy.
19:26And all of a sudden, here comes the Hulkster.
19:28The Hulkster, hovering away.
19:30Cleaning house.
19:31When they came together,
19:32it was like something was going to be unstoppable.
19:35We're going to turn right together.
19:36We're going to go into the Hulkster.
19:38With me and Randy, we were gold.
19:41The Hulkster man is extending that hand.
19:43We could be seeing the beating of the Mathis and the Manians.
19:48Yes.
19:49And it was like the handshake heard around the world.
19:52The kids still do it to this day.
19:53I don't think we'll ever have a little moment right back then.
19:57The mega, yeah, the mega, yeah, the mega power.
20:01Yeah.
20:01Mega power.
20:06The handshake that literally stopped the world in its tracks.
20:09The madness and the mania coming together
20:11in the biggest moment audiences had ever seen
20:14on Saturday night's main event.
20:16The initial run of this program was so successful,
20:19WWE recently revived it,
20:22giving today's fans a chance to make their own memories
20:24of what Saturday night wrestling is all about.
20:27That'll do it for this edition of WWE's Greatest Moments.
20:30I hope you've enjoyed this look back
20:32at the very best of Saturday night's main event.
20:35We'll see you next time.
20:36We'll see you next time.
20:37We'll see you next time.
20:37We'll see you next time.
20:38We'll see you next time.
20:38We'll see you next time.
20:39We'll see you next time.
20:39We'll see you next time.
20:40We'll see you next time.
20:41We'll see you next time.
20:42We'll see you next time.
20:42We'll see you next time.
20:43We'll see you next time.
20:44We'll see you next time.
20:45We'll see you next time.
20:46We'll see you next time.
20:47We'll see you next time.
20:48We'll see you next time.
20:49We'll see you next time.
20:50We'll see you next time.
20:51We'll see you next time.
20:52We'll see you next time.
20:53We'll see you next time.
20:54We'll see you next time.
