Join our family adventure to Bunnings as we expand our high-rise balcony garden with fresh vegetables! 00:00so anyone that's been following our gardening videos will know or a gardening sort of mini

00:09series will know that these are the beautiful plants I got for Mother's Day from a garden

00:15center so there's the fern growing this is my favorite plant but we've had a really we've had

00:21a really brutal winter actually to be honest like there's been a lot of wind coming off

00:25from the Narang River here and so this has had a little bit of a hard time but I've turned it over

00:32so these are the leaves that caught the brutal wind but I've turned it over this beautiful creeper is

00:38going to go all the way down the pot and so I'm really looking forward to that but anyways I've

00:42got a little collection of flowers here now it's time for some vegetables so this is what I've been

00:48doing like I've got this is another gardening hack I have I wear these plastic disposable gloves to

00:54work with the soil you know it's um it's just it prevents from getting under your nails and

01:00everything so this is what I'm doing here and this is where I'm planning to have some vegetables

01:06because obviously I mean it's there's so many benefits to growing your own vegetables I mean

01:10that's a no-brainer but but just that just the feel-good aspect of being able to pick something

01:15from your own little garden and one motivation or one motivator for me was that my we've got two

01:25balconies in this high-rise apart two main ones sorry and the front one that faces the sort of the road

01:32and the beach over that way is the one that my hubby is supposed to be looking after and he has got some

01:38junk plants out there and I'm very jealous because he actually managed to grow in that weed infested

01:45half dead garden of his a red tomato so when I saw that I thought well there's no excuse for this

01:52more tended garden because I really do love gardening there's no excuse for us or me me and

01:59Spencer Spencer can be my helper not to have vegetables out on this side of the balcony so that's what I've

02:06been doing here so this is the potting mix that's now pre-moisted which is going to allow me to put it

02:11into the planter without then that runoff so there's our little um drain hole there and if I

02:18let water that's all dirty and brown covered run off that it's going to stain the side of the building

02:23and the building's just been repainted so my neighbors will not be very impressed so um but

02:30so I'm going to plant um I'm planning on some some tomato plants here and maybe a herb pot too

02:36however there's one thing missing and that is a planter for the tomatoes and I think we've got

02:43enough potting mix but basically we're going to go to bunnings which is which I'm really looking

02:47forward to and then I'll be able to come home with a planter and put some beautiful green moistened

02:53soil in the planter and very excitingly plant some vegetables probably tomatoes I've got my eye on

03:01plant some tomatoes so we're going to rally up the kids now and go to bunnings

03:07yes it's going to be very sunny in the plant section of bunnings

03:18it is a nice song okay let's get you strapped in

03:39you rented the car park for your destination

04:00yeah bunnings work bunnings darling

04:05yeah it's fun it is fun yeah you can walk but I'm carrying you across the car park

04:14look oh watch it look at all these beautiful plants

04:23a wine barrel

04:33I am because I want a planter for the tomato so long one but I also want just a pot for

04:39herbs and I I wonder if a wine barrel looking one would be nice

04:44maybe but let's go let's go have a look at the long planters for the tomatoes

04:53so they don't have they don't have many actually there are vegetable plant or you know the planters

04:59that I've got in mind for the tomatoes this one's probably looking like the best option it's a bit

05:05pricey though it's like nearly 70 dollars but they've got a few others but I I do think that this size is

05:12probably going to be all right for our balcony I've just got my eye on my

05:16yeah the little one wants to go to the slide so I've just got his eye on my look like well I think we'll get this one

05:22isn't too bad we'll put it in the trolley

05:29yeah

05:35yeah we're gonna get one of these look I have looked at the other pots I used to

05:45have a wine barrel hot really big one in a house with that so I think I am going to

05:51get a wine barrel because they just kind of look cool these are obviously real wine barrels

05:56darling don't go far please I'm going to get one of these okay

06:00so we're going to have the herbs they're very light so they're obviously out of some sort of um

06:09I mean it's kind of a bit synthetic but I do what do you think darling we'll put some herbs in this

06:15yeah all right well we'll get this one and it's actually got quite a bit of

06:21water in it from probably last night's rain let's put this one in do you want to pop it there

06:25that's the way excellent job all right okay well that's our two pots so now we've obviously got to

06:33get plants to go into the pots I think we've got enough potting mix at home

06:36I have decided to get one more bag of potting mix we do have a bag at home but given the size of that

06:46planter I'm looking for some vegetable oh they must have one specifically for vegetables so what

06:52are we going to get a vegetable yes yes tomato vegetable and herb this is exactly what I'm after

06:59because I'm going to get some tomato plants all right let's get this one darling look this is very

07:04heavy though oh actually let's get this one I'm going to get this one darling these are heavy all right let's put this one in

07:16all right all right we're all set now all we need is the plants

07:32so yes I've got this look darling I've got this magnificent parsley that Amy chose

07:41so this is a beautiful parsley parsley something that we will absolutely use I need a coriander though

07:48I want coriander as well so do you want to go and pick me a nice coriander or should we go looking

07:52I know the coriander

07:54so while Spencer's enjoying a little bit of slide time I've snuck off with my beautiful choices

08:07tomatoes so this large pot of parsley coriander and basil you can't have tomatoes without basil

08:14but now you also need steaks if you're going to be attempting tomato plants so I was told that the

08:21steaks were at the back end here so there's these are really big though but let's have a look what

08:28they've got they've also got a whole selection of potting mixes like a massive selection of potting mixes

08:33ah these steaks look like the size that I'll be after so I think I think I'll get these ones

08:49all right these look perfect they're not too big and they're not even too tall so

08:54so I think they're going to be just perfect

09:03so of course the next thing I need to to secure the tomato plants onto the steak

09:09is something to tie them onto the steaks with so this is their section of strings and twine and

09:16all sorts of things so we're going to pick one of these

09:20I love rustic stuff so I really like this jute twine but might be a bit thick

09:24but you don't want to use something too thin either because it'll probably cut into the plants they've

09:34got the plastic ties up here but I want something that looks a little bit more rustic

09:54ah this looks nice and gentle either that or

10:06a twine here I think I'll go for this one jute tree webbing natural and biodegradable

10:24uh

10:41ice cream time the cafe here is awesome and he is very excited about it we better pay for it

10:47so I'm going to get covered in ice cream

11:10we're already covered in chocolate we're holding it from the stick end now though so that's good

11:14that's an improvement all right darling there's tomatoes over here

11:25so they've got they've got a couple of magnificent big ones here

11:30however that probably defeats the purpose of watching them grow

11:33so this is the one I had my eye on actually because I have I was looking at these while

11:45Spencer was in the slide or using the slide this one is quite lovely this one's big and I've got the

11:51stakes and the twine so I can tie it up straight away so I might get this one this is the only one of this

11:57size I've seen here though let's just move this so I've got this here

12:04you get very used to doing things one-handed when you go out shopping with a toddler all right um

12:11so there's other smaller tomatoes around here so I might have to get a couple of little babies oh yeah here

12:29okay well we've got these ones all right well how many tomatoes in that plant I think

12:34I think I think three I think we could have three easily

12:40so let's maybe get this one as well

12:49one looks pretty good

12:53these two I think as well as the bigger one slightly bigger one all right what do you think

12:58so I've just spotted these tomato cages so of course if you're gonna go crazy with you know

13:15real hardcore growing tomatoes or like a big tomato crop yourself I guess you could get this but I'm

13:20happy with my wooden stakes I think they look rustic oh oh no we lost a bit that's all right darling

13:27five second rule that's all right that's the way we can't lose the last bit of ice but that's all

13:34right um yeah so I'm happy with these it's all right because do you want to get down do you all right

13:42yeah you're all right you can walk now all right well I'm happy with my steaks I'm very happy with my

13:48purchases I've got beautiful herbs I've got the parsley the coriander and basil you can't grow tomatoes

13:55without basil and I've got three beautiful tomato plants including that really big one

14:02so that is so cool and we've got the planters so I think we've got everything and I'm covered

14:07in chocolate I think and Spencer's covered in chocolate but at least he's happy so let's go home kids

14:14because we've got some planting to do go on love yeah we'll go the car come on

14:29so I'm having fun out here I've planted the three tomato plants and what I realized as I planted them

14:37is I have two different varieties I did not realize that when I was planting them

14:42these two are just plain old tomatoes and even the label is just tomato whereas this one is

14:49apparently a little bit more special it's an heirloom um sunrise sunrise bumblebee so it's a

14:57little bit more special I think so um I have high hopes for some delicious sweet tomatoes from that one

15:05now obviously I've got to do the steaks I'm going to put a big steak for this one these came with their own

15:10little steaks so I'll probably leave the little steaks on just till they get a little bit bigger

15:15and then I'll pop them on here the herbs are still a work in progress as all gardening is always a work

15:22in progress and plus I'm starting to lose daylight now as the sun is starting to set but you know

15:27what interestingly this is so funny I use this bag of potting mix and this is not a new bag of potting mix

15:35we've had this bag of potting mix sitting in that corner there since I did the mother's day plants

15:40a couple a few months ago now anyway I found this in the potting mix it is a green weed it's green

15:53I don't know how it was growing in that bag but it was in a sealed bag like that is unbelievable that

15:59there was a weed in that bag so that's been growing in this bag of potting mix and I just realized that

16:06the twine I bought it is a little bit thick so that's all right it's gentle though I really wanted

16:12a gentle twine so what I'm just going to do is I'm going to cut this in half here and then um and then

16:19use this to um wrap around obviously just very gently I don't want to choke the plant or put anything

16:27too thin on it to cut the plant circulation because obviously the plant I don't know what it's called

16:34for plants but plants would have their own circulation and Piper's helping me so that's nice

16:40he's the only kid that's helping me at the moment so Spencer's happy with his toys and Amity is busy too so

16:48see so um so I'm going to then just gently pop this around here I'll probably just start on the base

16:55give it a nice tie and that's just going to give it a little bit of support and I like the wooden stakes

17:05as opposed to plastic and I like just the rustic sort of look of this I could probably even cut that

17:10in half again I think I will for the rest but um you know like this is just such a lovely project I

17:17absolutely love gardening I think this is going to be a perfect spot they're going to get beautiful

17:21morning sun and they're going to get sun most of the day so I'm just delighted and Piper's thinking

17:27about drinking the um the water he's going to try it's a little bit too to um there you go darling

17:34he can't really reach

17:46no I can't really reach at the moment he was now I thought he was going to drink out of that

17:50but anyway this is so fun I absolutely love gardening and when you live in a high-rise building

17:55now he's going to eat the parsley having some greenery for humans and animals alike

18:04just makes you feel closer to nature and healthier that's going to be good for Piper's gut
