Delhi court dismisses FIR plea against Sonia Gandhi in voter roll row

A Delhi court has dismissed a complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi. The petition, filed by a lawyer, alleged that Gandhi's name was included in the voter list in 1980, before she acquired Indian citizenship.

00:00Now, it seems the Delhi court has dismissed a complaint that was filed in front of it

00:13that was seeking an FIR against Sonia Gandhi.

00:16This was on an issue that was raised a few days back by BJP itself.

00:21Now, it was about how Sonia Gandhi was included in voter rolls

00:26even before she became a citizen of this country.

00:30Now, an order has been passed on the petitions that were filed

00:33to register a case against Sonia Gandhi.

00:38Well, it seems the Delhi High Court has dismissed those petitions

00:43and the order has been passed and this was an issue

00:47where the complainant had urged the court to direct a registration of an FIR.

00:52Joining us now is India Today's Srishti Oja on phone line.

00:58Srishti, what has the court said?

01:02Well, this is a favourable order for Sonia Gandhi

01:05which is coming from Delhi's Raus Avenue Court.

01:07As we know, a complaint was filed by a lawyer against Sonia Gandhi

01:11alleging that she became a voter way before getting Indian citizenship

01:15and this was filed before Delhi's Raus Avenue Court.

01:18The court today, however, has dismissed that particular complaint.

01:22We will get more details of what the court has said

01:25and what observations have been made once the order copies out.

01:30But the complainant, as far as the complainant is concerned,

01:32he had urged the court to direct registration of FIR.

01:36We are basically seeking directions to the Delhi police to investigate the case

01:40alleging that Sonia Gandhi's name was included in the voter list in 1980

01:44and then again, and then it was deleted in 1982.

01:49The complainant had also said that Gandhi got citizenship in April 23

01:52but her name was entered in the voter list way before that.

01:56So, these were the contentions which were put forth by the complainant

02:00but the court clearly doesn't seem to agree with the allegations made

02:05because they have refused to entertain the complaint

02:09or pass any directions are sought by the complainant.

02:16So, clearly, this is also related to the entire vote chori controversy that's going on.

02:21That is, when the BJP brought out this anomaly,

02:25they pulled out some documents and showed that Sonia Gandhi was part of the voters list

02:32even before she became a citizen of India.

02:35They pulled out Delhi's 1980 electoral rolls

02:39and said that her name was there even before acquiring citizenship

02:44and that had become a point of contention, a point of controversy

02:48and that had led to many people filing petitions

02:52and one lawyer asking for a registration of an IFIR against Sonia Gandhi.
