00:00A reading from the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 10, verses 12 to 22.
00:06Moses said to the people,
00:08And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you?
00:14But to fear the Lord your God and follow his ways exactly,
00:18to love and serve the Lord your God, with all your heart and all your soul,
00:23to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord,
00:26which I enjoin on you today for your own good.
00:29Think! The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the Lord your God,
00:34as well as the earth and everything on it.
00:38Yet in his love for your fathers, the Lord was so attached to them
00:41as to choose you, their descendants, in preference to all other peoples,
00:46as indeed he has now done.
00:49Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and be no longer stiff-necked.
00:54For the Lord your God is the God of gods,
00:56the Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome,
01:01who has no favourites, accepts no bribes,
01:05who executes justice for the orphan and the widow,
01:08and befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him.
01:12So you too must befriend the alien,
01:15for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.
01:19The Lord your God shall you fear,
01:24and him shall you serve.
01:26Hold fast to him and swear by his name.
01:31He is your glory,
01:33he, your God,
01:34who has done for you those great and terrible things
01:38which your own eyes have seen.
01:40Your ancestors went down to Egypt,
01:42seventy strong,
01:43and now the Lord your God
01:46has made you as numerous
01:47as the stars of the sky.
