As more Perth councils jump on board with FOGO bins for food and garden waste, some of the earliest adopters of the system may be forced to scrap it. Contamination problems have seen the waste in the state's southwest sent to landfill since late last year. Now regional councils say, without urgent government help, the FOGO bins could be gone for good.

00:00What began as a waste solution for WA now heading for the tip itself.
00:07For months, food and organic waste known as FOGO has been dumped in landfill.
00:12The Bunbury-Harvey Regional Council stopped taking the waste due to high levels of contamination.
00:17A recent char of Dardenup-led tender failed to find a suitable option.
00:22Soon the Dardenup Council and others will look at scrapping the bins for good.
00:26As we approach Christmas it's 12 months of no FOGO. We're collecting it as FOGO but it's going to landfill and I think that's probably long enough.
00:34Councils have made a last ditch plea to the State Government to help save their FOGO bins.
00:39The ideal solution, a local processing facility. That could cost millions.
00:44We've asked for some cash, it's what we need. But in lieu of that, some other solution would be appreciated but we haven't been able to find it.
00:54Great work!
00:56In Perth, more councils are adopting FOGO backed by State Government grants.
01:00WA's largest council by population, the City of Stirling, is not yet convinced.
01:05We're not confident at the moment that those processing facilities are able to cater for the volume from the City of Stirling.
01:12WA's Environment Minister Matthew Swinborn says FOGO remains an important part of WA's move to a more circular waste economy.
01:20He says he's working with local councils to try and find solutions but the opposition says those solutions should have come a long time ago.
01:28What they need to do is either progress FOGO across the board and invest in it fully to make it work or walk away from it.
01:35You can't go halfway and expect local councils to pick up the slack.
01:39Southwest councils are adamant the clock is ticking to find a fix.
01:43They are motto-spoken-squいき.
01:45We have to do so-and-campus of the board and put the experts to try and get a fix.
01:47Let's take what they need for.
01:49It's to be straightforward to see what they need and it's not fitting.
01:50Let's take a look at the time.
01:51Now, we're waiting for the floor of the board.
01:53We will ask the floor of the board and be mindful of each other for the board.
01:55We will have to drive the floor of the board and be mindful of each other within a week,
01:56and to make the floor of the board.
01:58We will have to drive the floor to the floor and not disappoints with the Boatina on earth,
02:00we will have to go to the floor of the board and the floor.
