00:00Liverpool City Council successfully obtained a £27,500 grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force,
00:08administered by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, to help clean up gum and reduce gum littering.
00:14We've been on the streets of Liverpool to ask you about how clean you think the local streets are.
00:21Well, Liverpool won because it's privately owned and privately run. It's completely litter-free.
00:28I think it's a mess, but people have to be encouraged to dispose of litter,
00:37but the bins have to be backed up by support. The bins have to be emptied regularly, streets have to
00:44be emptied clean regularly.
00:47I just don't know why people can't just do their little bit to make the world better for everyone, really.
00:53Put your stuff in the bin, put the stuff in the right bin, it's not that difficult, is it? Really,
00:56you know?
00:57Really, the other streets in Liverpool are not that bad for lesser. I think it's, I think, I don't see
01:04any great problem with lesser.
01:08Maybe I haven't been observant enough, I don't know, but I don't think so.
01:12The council's one of 50 across the country that have successfully applied to the Chewing Gum Task Force.
01:17Now it's fifth year for funds to clean gum off pavements and prevent it from being littered in the first
01:22place.
01:22Liverpool's now received Chewing Gum funding for four consecutive years, totalling more than £100,000 to support clean-up efforts
01:30across the city.
01:31So far, the grants have enabled the council to invest in specialist machinery and dedicated staff to remove gum from
01:37streets with particular attention given to residential neighbourhoods and high-profile areas of the city.
01:42This latest award will allow the team to continue work within these areas and step up engagement with residents and
01:49visitors about the impact of gum litter.
01:52You've got to encourage people to, positively, but I get annoyed when I see people dropping litter.
02:02You can see Chewing Gum in there, but I've yet to see or notice anyone actually spitting out Chewing Gum.
02:09But obviously they are, because the evidence is on the pavement.
02:13But I've never seen anyone do it. They must do it when no-one's looking.
02:16Council services have been cut. Government funding to the council has been cut. They've had to make more cutbacks than
02:23they should have done.
02:24I put litter in your streets firmly on the people who live in the streets, to be honest.
02:29The facilities are there to dispose of your own rubbish. Why people don't use them, I have no idea.
02:36One thing that really annoys me is when I see people chucking things out of cars.
02:41I mean, I'm a driver, and when I'm driving around and I'm stopping at a traffic light and I see
02:46somebody chuck a bottle, not a bottle, but McDonald's stuff out onto the pavement.
02:54I think, what the hell's going on here? I'm tempted to get out and hand it back to them.
02:59I think that's something that I'll be better off, but when I'm running around and I'll sit down here in
02:59the roadway.
02:59I'm basically, but I'm sorry.
