WATCH: Carmarthenshire Council's campaign to tackle fast food littering
8 months ago
Carmarthenshire County Council is reinforcing its public awareness campaign under the Caru Sir Gâr project, called ‘Save £125 – bin it, don’t risk it!’ to tackle the issue of fast-food litter across the region.
Building on the campaign launched in November 2024, this renewed effort - funded by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund - continues to highlight the importance of responsible waste disposal and the environmental and financial costs littering imposes on our communities.
Littering continues to take a heavy toll on Carmarthenshire’s parks, streets and natural landscapes each year.
Items like fast-food packaging and drink containers not only spoil the environment but also create a financial burden for the county.
By reinforcing the campaign, the Council is reminding the public that all littering offences are subject to a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £125, reduced to £95 if paid within 10 days. Failure to pay could lead to court proceedings with potential penalties of up to £2,500.
This campaign focuses on the issue of littering linked to fast food items. Packaging from fast food often remains in the environment, posing a threat to wildlife and contributing to visual pollution.
By disposing of waste responsibly, we protect our environment and look after our local communities.
As part of the campaign, the Council has produced a short video highlighting everyday moments when residents choose to dispose of waste responsibly.
Filmed in familiar locations across Carmarthenshire, the video reminds viewers that something as simple as using a bin can make a big difference. Residents are encouraged to watch and share the video to help spread awareness.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Edward Thomas, said:"This campaign goes beyond just avoiding penalties – it's about building a sense of pride in our community and safeguarding our local environment. By taking small, responsible actions when disposing of waste, we can all help keep Carmarthenshire clean and green.
We’re calling on everyone in Carmarthenshire to be part of the solution. Let’s take care of our parks, streets and public spaces. Avoid a £125 fine - bin it, don’t risk it.”
