01:46les kicks,
01:48les vanges, les readinges
01:50et lesirler la main-sheet at l'avant,
01:52qui les les le sail a l'air en et en-en-en.
01:54Chaque marryé,
01:56tout est la route un peu différente,
01:58mais ceci a choisi ce mode,
02:01c'est-à-dire ce mot qu'est-à-dire qu'ont-ça-c'est ?
02:02C'est-à-dire qu'on a sailé sur ce moment-là,
02:03on se peut savoir de ce qu'il y a le بين
02:05les choses vous avez.
02:06C'est-à-dire qu'un autre baie de l'amoké
02:06où nous avons fait la bonne équipe ici.
02:08Donc, nous sommes dans le perfect chapitre ici,
02:10Look at this, if you want to be working on your foils, like Biotherm needed to do, you can crane them out, bring them up to the pontoon, give them a little bit of a clean, give them a little bit of a sort out, it's an ideal place for a quick pit stop.
02:24So next on the pontoon, Team Holson PRB.
02:28This is another boat that's really low, it's really light, I mean, we say light, light for an Emocca, it's a big beast and it needs to withstand a lot of pressure.
02:37But that coach roof, really low, on Biotherm and on Holson PRB, it's impossible to stand up tall, we're seeing the sailors doing all sorts of yoga moves on the deck, just to try and get their back going.
02:49But have a look at the foil here, so this is, this is the magic, and it's pretty rare that we actually get a chance to look at it really, really close.
02:57They're actually doing a few little repairs here, you can see a little bit of gel coat that they've just been adding on here, I'm just checking my fingers, yeah, and I've just smudged it.
03:05Sorry guys, I might have just left my fingerprint on that.
03:08But the shape of this foil, compared with Biotherm, compared with Team Milizia, radically different.
03:16This one, it's almost straight, from here to the water, it's almost straight, it's got a little curve in it, but it's mainly straight.
03:23So when it goes into the water, there's a lot of foil down underneath.
03:28On Biotherm, on Milizia, they're really curved.
03:31So they grip into the water in a slightly different way.
03:34Again, just different philosophies for the teams.
03:40They've got multiple routes of access, got this nice big one at the back here, we've got these little ones in here, and that's where we see the sailors standing up, and helming the boat out at sea.
03:50And look at that difference in that mainsheet system here, right at the back of the boom, there's only one system controlling.
03:59Then we get onto a real, this is a real fan favourite, Paprik Arcaire, this is Johan Richon.
04:04Where's the hatch on this? It's really hidden away.
04:07This is a boat, that once you get inside, you're in, and the hatch is there, it's that little black lip, and you can slide it forward.
04:18It's the only route in and out of this boat.
04:22It's designed for one person, I mean, most Immokas are, but this was designed for Johan Richon, how he wanted it for sailing round the world, deep in that Southern Ocean.
04:32So the ergonomics have been designed to keep him in, safe, and kind of out of the elements.
04:38But that goes further, the hull, the shape of it, we're starting to get onto boats that are looking larger and bigger and thicker.
04:45And the bow on this boat, whereas on Holsten PRB, Beotherm, the deck, the bow deck, would be sort of concave.
04:54This one is convex, the water will hit it and it will drain off, there's a lot more volume here.
05:00This boat is quick when it's windy, it was built for the Southern Ocean, it was built for blasting downwind.
05:06And when we have had those conditions, it's been quick in this fleet as well.
05:09The trouble for Johan Richon and the rest of his team is he needs to find out how to make it quick in the light winds.
05:14Now the little chance to take a look at the foil, and this foil, similar philosophy to Team Holsten PRB.
05:21Flatter section here, rather than those big curbs that we're seeing on Beotherm and Team Milizia.
05:27But just take a look at where it says Akea on the front there.
05:32There's a chine, there's a ridge, there's a corner, and it runs right the way along.
05:37Because these boats are designed to go fast and really skim the waves, they've kind of got that surfboard built into them.
05:46When the wave hits, hopefully it kind of directs the worst of the spray down,
05:50but also just lifts the bow up.
05:52Everything about these boats is built for that moment where the big winds come, the big waves come,
05:58and you've got to deal with it.
06:01So this boat here has been in the hands of somebody that's been able to get the very best out of it.
06:07Thomas Rian.
06:08Now he has handed it over to Ambrosio Beccaria, but Thomas Rian is still on board.
06:13So there's a lovely little hand over there.
06:15Because you talk to any of these sailors, what really matters is not that the boat's fast,
06:19but that the sailor knows how to make it fast.
06:22That intellectual property is really valuable.
06:25All the little tuning notes that they have, all the little settings.
06:28So if you've picked up this boat, if you're Ambrosio Beccaria, you're thinking,
06:32where do I even start?
06:33Well, you get the guy that used to race it and race it well.
06:37You get Thomas Rian on board, and then he can share with you all that information.
06:41And this is a beautiful boat, somewhere in between what we saw with those really low-down,
06:48lightweight boats and Paprikarka.
06:50The bow is quite up.
06:52It's got quite a lot of volume on there.
06:53You can see the way it kind of rolls out to the side.
06:57But the copier here, smaller, less windage, less obstacle for that wind and the waves to kind of
07:04roll past, and it's quite open as well.
07:06Another foil here, which is using that straight section,
07:09but you can't quite tell.
07:11But actually, when I get up close to it as well, it's got a really big curve.
07:14Just on this back section here, it's got a really big curve in it.
07:18All these designers, what they're trying to do is they're trying to make a foil that does everything
07:23well.
07:24In the light winds, it lifts out of the water.
07:27In the medium winds, it just barely disturbs the water, giving you a little bit of lift.
07:32And in the heavy winds, it's controllable and just lifting the whole boat up.
07:35Trouble is, you can't do all three.
07:37It is impossible to make a foil which is good at the medium and the extremes of the speed
07:42and the wind ranges.
07:43So maybe that's why it is a slightly different shape.
07:46It's got quite an aggressive curve on the elbow and at the tip.
07:50It's got a really clear sort of inflection just at the top there.
07:55And that's a little interesting because when it's fully extended and down on the water,
07:59we're used to seeing that tip almost kind of out of the water, is worth chasing.
08:03That little bit of a difference right there, just at the end.
08:06But it really does seem to be something that, well, they're staking their hopes on.
08:11I keep saying that each of these boats is a little bit different, but this one is really different.
08:19And going into the last edition of the race, they were so different that everyone was just saying,
08:24oh, it's too big, it's too heavy, it's too clunky, it's too boxy.
08:28They were nervous about it to the point where actually at the start of the last round of the
08:32world race, there was some discussion about, can we get a rule change?
08:35Can we take some equipment off?
08:36Can we change things?
08:37Because they wanted their boat to be lighter.
08:39But then they got on the race course and everyone was amazed at how well this boat
08:44did deal with the light winds, but also those heavy winds as well, smashing through the waves.
08:48There's a couple of reasons for this.
08:50The boat, the hull, the deck is so high compared to the others.
08:54And that's all volume.
08:56If you dig that bow into the water, it's just going to lift itself straight back up again.
09:01The other boats with those lower decks, when it digs in, it gets stuck in like a knife into the ground.
09:06And you take a look at the back here, there is so much superstructure and space.
09:13All of this back here is living quarters.
09:16And that means you're going to sleep a bit better.
09:19You can stand up.
09:20I mean, not only can you stand up, actually, you've got to stretch to touch the ceiling.
09:24It's been built around a philosophy of if I keep my sailors well rested, comfortable,
09:28it's bright, it's easy, it's pleasant to be in there, then they're going to be able to concentrate more
09:33when I need them to.
09:34And they've been proved right.
09:36You've got that forward section for work.
09:37You've got that back section for living.
09:39Nobody else has anywhere near the level of comfort.
09:43Interestingly, actually, Francesca Klapcic, who did the last race on board 11th Hour Racing Team,
09:48won the last race.
09:49She's been on board this thing and she said it's amazing.
09:51Just the fact that you can stand up is incredible.
09:54There we have one of those big curvy foils.
09:59On the deck, just in front of the mast, they've got that big white box.
10:10That box has nothing inside it.
10:13There is no purpose for that box in terms of systems.
10:16There's no pulleys, there's no ropes, there's no hydraulics, no electronics.
10:19There's nothing in there.
10:20It's a void.
10:22The reason it's there is it goes back to what I was saying about them being a bit too heavy.
10:26The crew wanted to take some weight off their bulb,
10:28make the boat a little lighter, a little bit more springy.
10:32But there is a rule in Imoka.
10:34If you tipped your boat right the way upside down,
10:38so the keel was pointing in the air,
10:41the boat needs to be able to pull the keel to the side and then right itself.
10:45Well, if you take weight out of the bulb,
10:47when the bulb goes over, it's less effective to pull it over.
10:50So the only option they had was to put a big balloon on the deck.
10:54And there's a beautiful chance to pan from the beast that is Team Milizia,
10:59the weight, the colossal size,
11:02to the sleekness of Canada Ocean Racing Be Water Positive.
11:08And you should recognise this boat.
11:12This was 11th Hour Racing Team.
11:15This boat in different people's hands has been so quick.
11:19It's been so fast.
11:20Now it's in the hands of Scott Scheuer and he's just fallen in love with it.
11:24His aim is to do the Vendée Globe in 2028 on this boat.
11:27And everything that we're seeing here with the Ocean Race Europe,
11:29the Ocean Race around the world,
11:30it's all about learning against the best in the world to try and find that speed.
11:35It's somewhere between the comfort that we saw with Team Milizia.
11:40Indeed, there's a little bit of space in there.
11:42And the reason that there's a bit of space,
11:44and they're using that full width for the coach roof and everything.
11:46It's the only boat that has been designed specifically to house five people.
11:54Every other boat is a solo boat when it started its life.
11:58And then there's been some modifications.
12:00Concave deck,
12:01trying to be light, trying to be low in the water.
12:05It is quick.
12:07There's something about this boat.
12:08They've got a winning formula.
12:09Those little curves, those little edges.
12:11I mean, check out here.
12:12If you look at the bow here, compare this with Paprik Arkea,
12:15how much the deck tumbles down to the water,
12:19and how much of a flat bottom you have right up front.
12:22That surfboard approach to try and skip the water.
12:25But we said you can nose dive with that unless you have the volume.
12:28And they do nose dive on board this boat.
12:30This boat is a really rough ride.
12:32Fast, speedy, but also pretty hectic.
12:35Flat section foils to really give you the lift.
12:38This boat's really, really quick.
12:40Scott Shaw has got to work it out.
12:42He's got to find that intellectual property that I was talking about.
12:44He's got to find the settings.
12:46But I'm sure he's going to be able to do it with Pip Hare, Brian Thompson.
12:49They've got an amazing lineup.
12:50And each leg they've been getting better and better.
12:56One more mocha to take a look at.
12:58Team Amala.
12:59And we've had to wait for another day because it is an older boat.
13:02And it is slower.
13:03Certainly was slower on leg two.
13:05But there's an awful lot to love about this design.
13:08This was the old Hugo Boss launched in 2019.
13:11It was striking then, and I think it's still striking now.
13:14The deck looks fantastic.
13:16This was one of the first boats to really embrace the fully enclosed cockpit.
13:22And inside, it is quite like a cave.
13:25But there's one thing that has aged poorly.
13:27And that's the foils.
13:28You can see already that the foils in these boats are different.
13:32Normally, they'd be coming out towards us and sliding into the hull.
13:38But here, they come out through the bottom and they pierce their way out through the top.
13:42That was the old style.
13:43That was the old way of doing it.
13:45But there's a reason why it hurts.
13:48If you look here, you can see that what Alan Rohrer, the skipper of this boat, has done is he's extended the length of the foil, the cord of the foil, to try and give himself a little bit more wing area and a little bit more lift.
14:02But what it means is it won't actually fit inside the hull any more than this.
14:07So they're always out, or at least partly out.
14:11And that means in the light winds that we've been seeing in the Ocean Race Europe 2025, that's going to be a hindrance.
14:15You're not going to be able to pull those foils completely out of the way.
14:18The deck, really nice and low, really sleek.
14:22The boat looks fast, even though it's tied up to the dock.
14:24But those windows are really small.
14:26And inside, it's dark.
14:27The walls are black.
14:29And there's not a lot of space.
14:30The whole concept of the boat was that the previous skipper would be able to be tucked away in a chair, spring out with one step straight onto the winch, straight onto the controls.
14:42This is the boat that's probably the hardest to squeeze all five people on.
14:47It has its handicaps, absolutely.
14:50But it is in the hands of some pretty good sailors and some really enthusiastic youngsters as well.
14:54So there we have it, seven Amokas for the Ocean Race Europe 2025, each of them different.
15:02Some with some big advantages, others suffering some disadvantages.
15:06However, in the hands of some good sailors, each boat might find their leg to shine.
