Makati partners with private medical group to launch obesity care program

Makati Life Medical Center on Sept. 6, 2025 launches a comprehensive obesity care program in partnership with the Makati City local government, marking the first public-private initiative of its kind. According to Dr. Dennis Sta Ana, president and CEO of Makati Life Medical Center, the collaboration is aligned with the city's strong focus on nutrition and health. The program leverages existing successful models and aims to adapt them to address the needs of Makati residents.

00:00As I mentioned earlier this is the first public-private partnership and we have
00:04the local government as a partner and very big on the agenda of the mayor is
00:09of course nutrition there goes obesity so what I learned in this summit is
00:17actually there are already programs that you know we can parachute to the local
00:23government so it's something that you know we can visit and see how we can
00:28apply it to Makati City. Can you walk us through what's included in the obesity
00:35care? For being a public-private partnership the city allows us to treat
00:43illnesses. Obesity is an illness as you heard. So part of the list of surgical
00:53procedures that's allowed by the city is actually metabolic surgery so comparing
01:00it with a bariatric or some would say that if you do metabolic or bariatric
01:07surgery it's for beautification or aesthetic. It's not. If you talk about metabolic
01:15surgery it sort of prevents early death for a big enough or a big segment of the
01:23community that is obese. So the purpose of the city allowing us to do those kinds of
01:35surgeries actually to prevent early death for those that are really obese.
