00:00So the Canes, they win 27-24 to open up the season.
00:03Leroy, what did you make of it, buddy?
00:05What are your first impressions?
00:09So one of the things that was really cool, they got after him early, soon.
00:23And the thing that went unnoticed by a lot of people but didn't go unnoticed by me
00:29it's a different level of football when you can be physical, aggressive, and not have penalties.
00:40That's a sign of a good football team.
00:43Especially when the refs aren't screwing you.
00:45And I think towards the end of the game, there was a lot of grabbing and stuff by both teams
00:50because they were a little tired, but that's a whole different conversation.
00:54Steamy monsoon.
00:55The fact that they did not have a penalty, a University of Miami football team did not
01:03have a penalty while being physical and aggressive, I was like, this is a good football team.
01:11Because that, you know, sometimes players fake that.
01:16They faked that by thinking, oh, I'm going to push and shove.
01:21Wow, that's me being physical.
01:26There was only one mistake, and that was the poor.
01:30Remember I was telling you about defenses?
01:32You can flash something in front of their eyes and they'll chase it like a cat.
01:36Yeah, that was annoying.
01:38Dude was covering the tight end.
01:39Somebody ran underneath him.
01:43Now, football savvy says, I don't care if he catches that, I'm not giving up this big play.
01:49And you stay with the tight end.
01:51He got nervous and he stopped and got caught in no man's land.
01:55And they threw it to the tight end.
01:57The only, you know, and man, it's hard when the game gets into those pivotal moments,
02:07trying not to do too much.
02:09And that's exactly what happened.
02:12Bro, how good did Rupert Bain look yesterday?
02:14I was saying this.
02:17First of all, reminding me of Christian Wilkins from this standpoint.
02:23All over the field.
02:24Yep.
02:26Rushing the passer.
02:27Ball gets thrown.
02:29Runs over there.
02:30Ball gets batted in the air.
02:32Catches it.
02:33And then runs up the sideline.
02:35Yep.
02:35Yeah.
02:36That's the dog right there.
02:37No, he was awesome.
02:38I was, the most impressed I was in the game was, first of all, that kicker was sketchy.
02:48But crunch time, crunch time, that ball could have went 60.
02:52Oh, dude.
02:53He did it so.
02:54I mean, it was like, wow.
02:56And they kept showing the stats.
02:57Four for nine.
02:58I'm like, I didn't like that.
03:00Four for nine.
03:01Don't tell me.
03:01Four for nine.
03:03That's like me kicking for him a couple of years ago.
03:06Dude.
03:06I was like, and like, we were saying like, you know, we kind of had like the look to him.
03:12And, and, and, and I didn't want to say nothing.
03:16I held back because it wasn't his fault, but he had a little Janikowski in him, a little rumble in the jungle.
03:26Right.
03:26His shirt was a Smedium.
03:31Right.
03:32They're all Smedium.
03:33I think that's how they make all the guys.
03:34But you can't be Smedium with a, with a, with a little pouch.
03:37Right.
03:38And unless you got, and I don't know why the, all the defensive linemen got single digits in teams.
03:43I don't know that.
03:44Right.
03:44I don't know.
03:45It was crazy.
03:46Right.
03:47They're like all like.
03:49The smaller you are, the bigger your number can be.
03:51It looks so weird.
03:52It looked, it did look weird, but I was.
03:56So impressed because I got understanding how things were done and everybody was complaining.
04:04And I was watching the game with my buddy, Mike.
04:08And he was saying, oh, here comes the prevent defense.
04:11And I'm like, here's what you want.
04:15Okay.
04:16You want them to burn as much clock as possible.
04:22And so the way the game was going, they were methodically moving the ball down the field, which was great.
04:31No big chunks, no nothing.
04:33Then they hit the tight end.
04:34Everybody blamed it on, you know, prevent.
04:37It really wasn't.
04:38Everything else, keeping it in front of them, let them throw those little short passes, come up.
04:42They were tackling great, right?
04:46Swarming to the football.
04:47Everything was great.
04:48The only thing that happened was, as a football player, there are going to be periods of time where you have to understand what I can allow and what I can't.
05:00And at no point in time should you let somebody run past you or get behind you.
05:05That was the only mistake.
05:06And I got it.
05:08I understood all that.
05:09Unfortunately, they went down and scored.
05:12Yep.
05:13Then the Canes went down, did their thing with, let me just say this, two of, one for Notre Dame and one for Miami.
05:25Two of the sickest catches I've seen.
05:27Oh, my God.
05:28Yeah, that kid from Notre Dame did have the sick catch.
05:30Right.
05:31And I was like, wow.
05:34Okay.
05:35But.
05:36And they weren't even doubters.
05:37They had to review both of them.
05:38But, like, they were, like.
05:39Right.
05:39They did a great job of, like, keeping possession on both of them.
05:42Yeah.
05:43Unbelievable.
05:43It was unbelievable.
05:45I would tell you this.
05:47The way that front four got after Carr when they came back after they took the lead, that's what you haven't seen.
05:57That was nice.
05:58Here in Miami.
05:59They got after them with four.
06:01They could not stop them.
06:03They could not block them.
06:05And it was, like, holy smokes.
06:09And it wasn't a blitz.
06:10They got after them with four.
06:13Dude, it was.
06:14They blitzed once the whole game.
06:15Once the.
06:16It was amazing what they did.
06:19And I'm going to tell you, the sign of a good football team, if you can get after the quarterback with four, it's going to be a long day.
06:25Because all you're going to see all year is dump offs, crossing routes, screen passes.
06:32And if they get after the ball carrier like they did, like, man, I think.
06:39I was.
06:39And the other thing that was impressive is, like, you know, there was a lot of new.
06:43Like, these are a lot of the guys who've, you know, they're transferred over.
06:45The new guys are kind of all coming together.
06:47And then a true freshman are coming out there and balling out.
06:51So, like, these are not guys who have been to each other a ton.
06:53Right.
06:54Right.
06:54That kind of cohesiveness is pretty impressive.
06:56And who's number 10?
06:59Malachi.
07:00Huh?
07:00Malachi Tony.
07:02He's 17.
07:03I know, dude.
07:04Dude.
07:05Like, I was like, wow.
07:07And because I said, he doesn't.
07:09He might be fast, but he doesn't really look at you.
07:11He ain't even got his man muscles yet.
07:14He's the high schooler.
07:15When I heard he was 17 this morning, I was like, huh?
07:18You can do that?
07:20Yes.
07:20That's crazy.
07:22It was amazing.
07:24So, I was impressed at, one, how they bounced back.
07:33I was a little disappointed in you got all those turnovers, and you only got, like, you
07:37didn't really score.
07:39You know, old Toes was 17 when I walked on Barry University's campus.
07:42Had to use my Bucs ID to get into a certain bars, you know?
07:48Anyway.
07:50So, I would say, like, I was so impressed with, and here's the thing.
08:01All week, what did we hear?
08:03Those two running backs, that physical front goal.
08:05And I'm telling you, like, yeah, they had a couple of nice runs, right?
08:12A couple of nice runs, but, like, I mean, how many of those dumbass hurdles did we have
08:15that went nowhere?
08:16Gosh, I was like, oh, you did this hurdle?
08:18It was, it was, and just no other way to explain it, a good football game with ebbs and flows.
08:27And the thing that, if you're a Cain's fan, you should be most proud of is that, no, it
08:34never seemed like you were out of it.
08:36It was never a situation of, oh, no, here we go again.
08:39It was always a situation, okay, let's get him.
08:42Okay, now let's get the quarterback.
08:44Okay, let's do this.
08:45It was, you never felt that the game got out of hand.
08:52And, and so, and the way they got after that quarterback, I mean, look, the only reason
08:59why they didn't have more sacks is because, and, and I personally believe that if you get
09:04a ground up penalty, that should count as a sack.
09:06Agreed, 100%.
09:07Because, because you're basically just throwing it to get rid of a sack.
09:11And, and here's what I would say.
09:13You remember late in the game where they, he threw it and they had to review it, whether
09:19it's a.
09:20Yeah, a two-handed thing?
09:21Yes.
09:21Because as soon as the ball hits an offensive lineman, it's grounded.
09:27So that's all, that's all you need to know.
09:30As soon as it hits the offensive lineman, I don't care if a running back's on the other
09:35side, as soon as it hits the offensive lineman, that's grounded.
09:39End of discussion.
09:40So once you see it hit, I think 64, right?
09:44It's automatic grounded.
09:46Whether there's a receiver in the area or not.
09:48Look, he showed good moxie.
09:50Because, like, I, obviously there were times where he looked like, like, you could see
09:53the bright lights on him for a second.
09:55And so, like, for him to settle in and bring his team back and give him a chance.
09:58Yes.
09:58You know, props to him.
09:59But yeah, I thought, I thought that defense, I mean, like, man, Bane and Mesdor, I mean,
10:05they're two monsters.
10:06You know what was, you know what was something that drove me absolutely crazy?
10:13Let me set this up.
10:13Who holds his face?
10:15Oh, my God.
10:16Marble mouth.
10:16Let me, let me, let me, let me, let me set it up for you.
10:21So the Canes come out the second half and eight minute drive, right?
10:30Balling, balling.
10:32So then things happen.
10:35Then Notre Dame goes on a little run.
10:38They have a, where they get the ball.
10:40So, um, and then they're driving end of the quarter, they score like the first play
10:47to fourth quarter, right?
10:49Then they score, score again and then kick a field goal and they go, the Canes have given
10:57up 17 in the fourth quarter.
10:59And I'm like, if you're an outsider looking in at that, that's kind of skewed because of
11:06the fact that it took them all third quarter to even get close.
11:10Right.
11:10And then they got there with like, uh, the first play to four.
11:14I think that's, that's probably what like drove a, if you were going to, like I've been
11:18saying today, like any Canes fan who wants to be upset with how the game went down, like
11:24it's, I know you went through a rollercoaster of emotions because it felt like it was going
11:28to blow out city and this was going to be really easy.
11:31And then you ended up with squeaky cheeks at the end, but that was the fun of it.
11:35Like that's what fun of rivalry games are.
11:37You ended up beating a team that was in the national championship last year, right?
11:41You get your first win versus a top 10 team in eight years.
11:44What did you think?
11:45What did you think that game was going to look like?
11:47First of all, you knew it was going to be a, a, a butt glinter, a nail biter.
11:51You knew all these things were going to happen at some point.
11:54Yeah.
11:54I think people just got to the point where it was like, Oh, once, because the Canes, you
11:59know, when they came out in that first drive of the second half and basically just with,
12:02it was like eight minutes long, almost.
12:04Right.
12:05That's what I'm saying.
12:05That eight minute drive told me that like, yeah, there was very impressive, very impressive
12:13when you could come out, take that commanding lead.
12:17But you still had a lot of football left and, and you had to, you know, there was really
12:23only one big, there was two big plays.
12:26There was a 30 yard run, which like, holy smokes, there were no, there was nobody over
12:32there.
12:32No.
12:33Right.
12:33Nobody.
12:35Um, and then you had the, the pass.
12:37I think the, the, the run was just a good, a well-schemed play that you ran away from
12:44everybody who seemed to be on the other side of the ball.
12:48If it went back and forth, like you'd feel like anybody who, I get it.
12:51There was people who are worried that Mario Cristobal is too conservative and he's the
12:56number one thing that's been, that's been hit in his entire resume has been game management
13:00and that you try to lead too much, but like.
13:04The management of the management of that game was fine.
13:08Right.
13:09And, and here's where, you know, sometimes you look at things and you have to look at
13:15it like this.
13:16Understand what they're doing and understand the execution of what they're trying to do.
13:22And sometimes you have a mistake or poor execution and you immediately go to the plan.
13:30And so again, if not for that big play to the tight end, you're thinking totally different
13:39as they have to methodically move the ball down the field.
13:42And I got to tell you with that pass rush, there ain't no way in hell they're going 10
13:47plays, throwing those little dinks and dunks with somebody not going to grab.
13:50Yes.
13:50That being said though, if Hoot Hoot doesn't hit that kick and we end up losing that game,
13:54I'm thinking it's Georgia tech all over again because I'm having the, the, the, the angst
13:58of, of intangibles running down the field.
14:01Right.
14:02Right.
14:02But it was a great game.
14:03Like, like, look, there were some classic moments, Carson back onions throws.
14:08Yeah.
14:09You know, you got some young talent.
14:11You got some great transfer talent that came in and they did that in not ideal conditions.
14:16So like, you got a chance, like your first look together to get to do that on that kind
14:20of a stage.
14:21Yeah.
14:21It was one of the moments of the weekend.
14:22It was fantastic.
14:23It, it, look, it was, I watched a lot of football this weekend, right?
14:31And some of it was ugly because it was the first game of the season.
14:37I watched Texas, Ohio state like, oh my goodness.
14:41Like, we were talking about that before he got on old arch.
14:45Right.
14:45Oh, but you know what I would say?
14:48Like, it didn't help that they were batting the ball around for him.
14:52Um, it didn't help that.
14:56And, and, and remember what I say to us about Mike McDaniel sometimes, sometimes you overcoach
15:02a situation.
15:03Like you try so hard.
15:05In fact, Notre Dame did it early in the game.
15:08They tried so hard to protect their quarterback, throwing the short passes, doing a lot of the
15:14quick stuff or whatever that you waited until you get down before you drop him back.
15:21Now I understand after the fact why they were doing that.
15:25Cause that front four got after car.
15:28Right.
15:29But when you watch what Texas did, they did the same thing.
15:35Like you let them play.
15:37And sometimes you overcoach a situation so that it looks that way.
15:43And they go, why are you throwing all these short passes?
15:46Like at what time, at what point during that game did you figure out, I hope they keep throwing
15:53these short passes.
15:53Cause that crap ain't working.
15:54They are getting out and they never stopped.
15:59They never stopped.
16:01And, and so when you say we got two of the best, uh, we got the best tandem of running
16:07backs and the NCAA yet you choose to throw a little short passes.
16:12Like, what are you saying to your team?
16:14So like, yeah, play football.
16:18And I was impressed that the fact that both offensively and defensively, they execute
16:24it really well.
16:26They had some mistakes, right?
16:28But they executed really well based on when was the last time you've said this statement?
16:37Notre Dame had more penalties than the university of Miami.
16:41Hell about any team.
16:43I don't think they did have more penalties in Miami.
16:45It was close.
16:46It was six, five, but the rest is screwing us.
16:49Oh, okay.
16:49Oh, when's the last time you said Miami didn't have double digit?
16:52I don't know.
16:54It's a, it's a, like, yeah, man, that, that, that was the most impressive thing to me was
17:00how sound and, and efficient they played football yesterday.
17:06So you would agree that the rest are trying to screw Miami at the end?
17:10No, but kind of, but kind of, you see what I was saying?
17:14Right?
17:14Like kind of, like kind of, like those, those passive, come on.
17:18I mean, like they were calling them on them too.
17:22I mean, hey, check this out.
17:25Hey, dude, can you stop hugging the wide receiver?
17:30Please.
17:31I think he did that for a purpose.
17:33I think he knew it was going to be, I think he knew it was going to be.
17:35One, he dove at him and clipped his legs.
17:37But how many times did you see him hanging on with the jersey?
17:39But they never called it on them.
17:42No, yeah, they did.
17:43Not till the end.
17:44That's what I'm saying.
17:46The refs are trying to screw us, dude.
17:47I'm telling you.
17:48Brittany, you saw it too, right?
17:50No.
17:50I was there.
17:50I saw it.
17:51Yeah, she saw it.
17:52By the way, she's banged up to it.
17:53It was ACC.
17:56Doesn't matter.
17:57They hated it.
17:57Well, the Canes and the ACC, it's a touchy relationship.
18:00The ACC refs notoriously hate Miami.
18:02Yeah, notoriously hate Miami.
18:03And they want, and they love Notre Dame.
18:05Because they've been trying to flirt with Notre Dame forever.
18:07Oh, please don't pay another pay.
18:08All right.
18:09All right.
18:10If you say so.
18:11I'm like, I was just happy with the game.
18:13It was a well-played game.
18:15Played with, you know, like normal mistakes.
18:21Nothing crazy.
18:24They didn't have no, what do they call them?
18:27They didn't have any swag penalties.
18:30No swag penalties.
18:31No swag penalties.
18:33I would tell you what.
18:36That was a physical football team.
18:39It was really impressive.
18:40Really impressive.
