01:00...to beat up with two by fours…
01:01...chairs…
01:02…anything that he can get his hands on.
01:04Bruiser Brody was insane.
01:12On July 16, 1988…
01:15…this insanity bled out of the ring, into real life…
01:18…when Bruiser Brody was violently killed in a locker room…
01:21…moments before the opening bell.
01:24In the world of professional wrestling…
01:55I wanted to be the next Bruiser Brody.
01:58The stories I've heard surrounding Brody's death have always troubled me.
02:02After 30 years, we tracked down three wrestlers willing to tell their version of what happened that night
02:08and to chronicle the life and death of one of wrestling's greatest outlaws.
02:12Just in case you don't know who I am, I'm Tony, Mr. USA Atlas, brawled at the shoulder, narrow at the hip,
02:20tower of power, too sweet to be sober.
02:22One of the last people to see Bruiser Brody alive was Mr. USA Tony Atlas,
02:28a former bodybuilder turned wrestler and a current WWE Hall of Famer.
02:33Okay, LT, stand up. Take the clothesline over the top.
02:36Cameraman, watch out.
02:40That was the shittiest finish I've ever seen.
02:43Dirty Dutch Mantell is one of the business's most infamous villains in front of the camera.
02:48Has the taste returned to your mouth after I slapped it out just a few seconds ago?
02:53And one of wrestling's greatest minds behind the scenes.
02:56In your experience, did you ever work with Brody?
02:58I never did. I never had a match with Brody.
03:00Why's that?
03:01Well, hey, bait to shit, I love you.
03:03And then there's the madman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher.
03:08Abdullah was also Bruiser Brody's greatest in-ring nemesis.
03:13And, you know, this is a very graphic display of exactly what the world of professional wrestling is all about,
03:20the dark side, so to speak.
03:22I've been in the business for 53 years.
03:25What else can I say?
03:28My name is Abdullah the Butcher, right?
03:33I'm not a wrestler.
03:34I don't grab holds.
03:35I use karate.
03:37I use jujitsu.
03:38Okay?
03:40I'm not a wrestler.
03:42I can beat you up any time that I want to beat you up.
03:46You understand?
03:47And the guy behind the camera, give me the forks so I can stab it all in his head.
03:54Then you'll know.
03:57Let me tell you something.
03:59Don't you ever say that me and Brody was fake.
04:05We are not fakes.
04:07We kept bringing them back and back.
04:10And the people would say, when I seen that match, that was no bullshit.
04:17What would a match resemble between Abdullah and Bruiser Brody?
04:23A bloodbath.
04:24Every night.
04:26We were like killers.
04:28We kept pounding.
04:30When you get Abdullah Butcher and Bruiser Brody in the ring,
04:33there's going to be a lot of blood.
04:35Because Abdullah had his fork.
04:37And they did it every night.
04:38It was just a formula.
04:41Oh, I loved the fork.
04:43I could stab him in the head, stick it into the mouth.
04:46Do everything.
04:47Probably 85% of the match was outside the ring.
04:52He struck fear in the hearts of fans.
04:54When he went down to the ring, people moved out of the way.
04:57That's an art.
04:59Brody reputation in the business was he was a main eventer.
05:03He could make you a lot of money.
05:04So that's why he was so popular.
05:06That's why so many promoters wanted him.
05:07Because he could put asses in the sea.
05:09He was a superstar.
05:20And at that time, he was one of the biggest stars in the late 70s, early 80s.
05:26He was one of the biggest stars in the world.
05:29Bruiser Brody, he was a legend.
05:30He was a legend back before he died.
05:34Oh, my gosh.
05:43Oh, my God.
05:44Every time I come out here, I find something new.
05:47Look at this.
05:48Another one.
05:48Some sentimental stuff associated with it.
05:52There's a lot of it, though.
05:54Here's a whole pile of photographs in here.
05:57I mean, take a look at that.
05:58Oh, boy.
05:59I first met Frank in Australia in the hotel that I was working in.
06:06I had no idea of his character because I only saw Frank Goodish.
06:11I never saw Bruiser Brody.
06:13Frank was very quiet, very intelligent, even back in those days, just like a regular person.
06:22So he never lost sight of who he was.
06:24He didn't become the character he created.
06:27That's football, honey.
06:28In my own case, I spent three years with the Washington Redskins in 1969, 70, and 71.
06:36I was an All-American high school football player.
06:39I went to school on an athletic scholarship.
06:42I'm doing that.
06:43We're rolling for this, huh?
06:44Yeah, we've been rolling.
06:45Okay, good.
06:46Oh, okay.
06:46I'm sorry.
06:48I won't.
06:50I don't think you said anything there.
06:53Yeah, I did.
06:54You did?
06:55Yeah.
06:55And I don't think it's good that anybody knows that I'm Frank Goodish.
06:59No, right.
06:59Don't let anyone have you.
07:00Frank was kind of a little bit of a renegade.
07:04We were together for a long time, and he just came up with this idea.
07:07Why don't we stop off in Vegas and get married?
07:11He said, I'm going to tell you now, it is not going to be an easy life.
07:15Out of a year, he maybe would only be home three months of that year.
07:20It was a challenge, but you do it.
07:21When Jeff was born, he changed so much, because then he wanted to do for his family, and he
07:29wanted to provide for his son.
07:32So it changed him, even made him softer than who he really was.
07:37When he was around his son, they had a really good relationship.
07:41I do believe I've subconsciously possibly blocked a lot of things out, unfortunately.
07:45So a lot of stories I hear are stories that other people tell me about my dad.
07:50At the same time, it's hard to hear these stories, because they're stories that people are telling
07:53me, and I don't have a lot of stories I'm going to tell.
07:55It was like this character that he created, that it was separate from the person I knew.
08:02I would take him to the airport, and he would just be dad, husband, get out of the car, had
08:10his hair pulled back, walk through those doors, take his hair down.
08:14He became Bruiser Brody on the other side, and I could actually see the whole transformation
08:18take place.
08:19In July 1988, Frank departed for a booking in Puerto Rico, an isolated wrestling territory
08:31notorious for its wild blood feuds and the zealousness of his fans.
08:35It was a blood city.
08:40It was blood all the time.
08:41Big shows, you'd have three or four matches of blood in it.
08:44Because remember, I told you, people believed, and they believed when you saw blood that it
08:48was serious.
08:49Ricky Brody wants to stop him.
08:51Look, the blood is just coming up.
08:53The people are violent people.
08:57They wanted violence.
09:01People throw rocks at you, they throw piss on you, they throw urine on you, they throw
09:06feces on you.
09:07They stoned me.
09:09They used to take cups, put glass or stones and throw them at me.
09:14They want to see somebody get hurt.
09:16They want to see somebody get carried out on a stretcher.
09:19Every place you go, they love violence.
09:23Some weekly planners, 1987, 1988.
09:35It's just his daily activities, it appears, his workout schedule and regimen and where he's
09:41traveling to, San Juan, Puerto Rico, of all places.
09:45Yeah, I believe it was the 16th and 17th that that happened, unfortunately.
09:52In July, 1988, Frank Goodish left his family in Texas and entered one of the most violent
09:59wrestling territories in the world.
10:01His family could not have imagined that this would be the last time that they would see
10:06him alive.
10:07In the summer of 1988, Bruiser Brody left his family in Texas and entered one of the most
10:17violent wrestling territories in the world.
10:21It wasn't only his Puerto Rican fans who were waiting for his return, but some unresolved
10:25business and a bitter, long-standing grudge.
10:28The World Wrestling Council is Puerto Rico's main wrestling promotion, which was established
10:34by wrestlers Guerrilla Monsoon, Victor Jovica, and Carlos Colon.
10:39Carlos Colon!
10:41Carlos Colon!
10:46Carlos Colon was the boss.
10:50He's also a WWE Hall of Famer now.
10:53He was probably as big a star as Roberto Clemente.
10:55Carlos Colon's right-hand man was Jose Juertes Gonzalez, a local wrestler celebrated in the
11:02ring as invader number one.
11:05Gonzalez also acted as the company's booker, the person in charge of the creative direction
11:10and outcomes of wrestling shows.
11:13Frank understood the value of his character consistently appearing as an unbeatable monster
11:19to fans, as a way to keep them coming back for more.
11:22He took this aggression to a new level when he wrestled a young Jose Gonzalez, when Gonzalez
11:28was hoping to make a big impression in the WWF.
11:34Brody and Invader, they didn't really care for each other.
11:37Their personalities did not mesh.
11:40Even their matches, you could tell they were something not quite right with them.
11:44He was a pretty decent guy, if he liked you.
11:47If he didn't like you, he would beat the living crap out of you.
11:52But I just seen Brody take people in the ring many a time and just beat them unmercifully.
11:57He would just beat them to death.
11:59Well, I've tried to piece it together over the years.
12:01What brought this on?
12:02Let's go back in the past.
12:04In the mid-70s, they were grooming, I heard, Jose Gonzalez to be like the next Puerto Rican star.
12:12Bruiser Brody came in and had a match with Jose Gonzalez and just beat the shit out of him.
12:17He ate him up.
12:17I mean, the whole face was swollen, head was swollen up, looked just like a pumpkin.
12:22Brody beat him so bad that S.D. had to take him to the hospital.
12:25S.D. Special Delivered Jones, he was a wrestler.
12:28We put him in the car and S.D. took him to the hospital.
12:31And he turned to S.D. Jones and said, one day I'm going to kill that man.
12:37He was angry.
12:39I mean, his head looked like a pumpkin, brother.
12:41Bruiser Brody was worried about one image, and that was Bruiser Brody.
12:45Once the people see you get beat once or twice, that brand, and he knows this,
12:52the brand becomes kind of violated, and he didn't want that to happen,
12:57and that's why he acted the way he did.
12:59I don't know about the other professional wrestlers.
13:02I only know about Bruiser Brody.
13:04And when I go in the ring, it doesn't matter whether I'm in Texas or New York.
13:09It doesn't matter whether people like me or dislike me.
13:12I'm going to be just as aggressive every night.
13:15But I also heard that Brody was making huge money in Japan,
13:19and he had wanted to invest in a wrestling promotion somewhere.
13:26And he had Puerto Rico in mind.
13:28And there was an owner, a part owner, a minority owner,
13:31named Victor Quinones, who had 10% or something.
13:35But a lot of it was owned by Guerrilla Monsoon.
13:38And I think Victor Quinones was brokering a deal between Monsoon to sell his shares to Brody,
13:46which would have made Brody probably a minority owner.
13:50I think he bought part of that company.
13:52They wanted his money, but they didn't want his ideas.
13:55And Brody ain't that type of guy.
13:59Brody had his opinions.
14:00If you didn't like them, too bad.
14:02Can you tell us your name?
14:03David Manning.
14:04I was the booker for World Class Championship Wrestling.
14:08I was a little worried because Frank was going to Puerto Rico to wrestle.
14:11Frank said they owed him about around $20,000, $25,000.
14:15And he had asked for the money politely.
14:17He had been waiting for the money.
14:19He told me before he left, remember I said this, I'm coming back with my money.
14:24And he said, if I have to beat every one of them up, I'm getting my money.
14:27Brody had mentioned to people that, and if he took over, he was going to get rid of Jose.
14:33And also, Jose Gonzalez had just lost his three-year-old daughter.
14:37She died in a swimming pool accident.
14:39She drowned about three months earlier.
14:42Now, his job is being threatened.
14:45He doesn't like Brody in the first place.
14:48So you add all those ingredients, it's like fire and gasoline.
14:53An explosion was going to happen, and it did.
15:00Can I please tell the story?
15:01I'm back here.
15:02Because I want to tell it.
15:04Okay.
15:04I want to tell the story.
15:06See?
15:07Okay, okay, okay.
15:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:09Because I've been out for two days, I've been talking about everything but Brody.
15:13And I want to tell this story so bad, I've been able to explode.
15:16I've been carrying this story around in my chest for how many years now?
15:22This is how me and Brody started our day.
15:25Yeah?
15:26Yeah, yeah, we were working out in the gym that morning.
15:29The same routine we did, you know, this last day here on earth.
15:32So I go to the gym every morning anyway.
15:36And so me and him, we worked out together.
15:38And he said, hey, Tony, you want to go get something to eat?
15:40So I said, oh, sure, I got to go get something to eat.
15:42And then he turned to me at breakfast, and he said, I waited a long time to get in down here.
15:50So I just got the impression that maybe, just maybe, that he bought in the company.
15:55He said, you are going to see a lot of changes.
15:59We was at the hotel, and Bruiser Brody and Dutch Mantel was sitting on the steps outside in the front of the building.
16:10And I said, Brody, I figure you'd be gone by now.
16:13He said, I'm waiting on Jose Gonzalez.
16:16He's supposed to pick me up.
16:18And I, right then, I said, that's unusual.
16:21Why would Jose, the booker, leave his main event?
16:26And I said, you could ride with us if you like.
16:28So we went to the show, and traffic was horrible leading into the stadium.
16:34Because cars were lined up, so you know it was going to be a sellout.
16:37And we hopped out, and we took our bags to where the dressing rooms were.
16:43Now, looking back on it, it was kind of strange.
16:46Because when I walked in, I remember I got a strange feeling.
16:49But Jose was sitting there.
16:50I said, he's here.
16:52As soon as I come to the door, I saw the three of them sitting there, talking.
16:56Jose, Carlos Colon, and Victor, they were sitting there in the football hut.
17:02Yeah, it kind of seemed a little strange.
17:04Because I've never really seen them together like that.
17:08And it didn't look like they were in conversation.
17:11They were just sitting there, which was even more strange.
17:14Gonzalez gets up from his seat, looked me straight in the face, and left.
17:22Never looked at Brody, never looked at Dutch, and he walked out of the dressing room.
17:27And Brody sat down right beside me.
17:30And I sat there maybe five minutes.
17:31And that feeling of tension, it just got stronger.
17:38So I said, I got to get out of here.
17:40I got to move.
17:41I got to something.
17:42Maybe if I move around, it'll go away.
17:44So I get up and walk out.
17:45I go, and I sit in the dugout.
17:48And I'm watching the crowd come in.
17:49So I had my art pad.
17:52I set my bag down.
17:53I set my chair.
17:54And I started sketching.
17:55Brody came over, and he looked at it.
17:58He said, that is freaking fantastic.
18:00He got all excited, big smiles on his face and everything.
18:03And he said, I wonder if you could do one for me.
18:06So he opened up his little pouch, reached in, and pulled out a picture of his son.
18:12Jose came back into the dressing room.
18:14I looked up, and Jose was standing there.
18:17And he had a towel over his head.
18:22Brody, can I talk to you for a minute, please?
18:25Just like that.
18:26Can I talk to you for a minute, please?
18:28And Brody said, yeah.
18:30And he walked in there.
18:32And that's where it happened.
18:34It's not unusual to discuss match plans privately, but on this evening, the conversation between
18:40Brody and Gonzalez would descend into an unthinkable nightmare.
18:47In Puerto Rico, before his match, Bruiser Brody is summoned to a private meeting with talent
18:55booker Jose Gonzalez.
18:57There was a history of bad blood between Brody and Gonzalez, and wrestler Tony Atlas was witness
19:03to the growing tension.
19:04He had a bag in his hand, a picture of his son in this hand.
19:10And when he turned away with the picture, that's when I noticed Carlos stirring at me.
19:14As I'm looking at Carlos, I hear this sound.
19:19Oh!
19:19So I looked up.
19:23Brody was halfway hunched over.
19:25I thought Jose punched him in the stomach.
19:28That's what I thought.
19:30That the first thought came of me.
19:31Damn, he hit Brody.
19:33I said, oh, this is going to be a fight.
19:36So then he hollered again.
19:37Oh!
19:38I looked at Jose's face, and his eyes was bloodshot red.
19:45Then I saw the knife.
19:47The knife went in the air like this, with blood dripping off of it.
19:51I sprung up out of my chair, wrapped my arm around Brody's waist, just like this.
19:56I yanked him back, just in the nick of time to keep from his throat getting cut.
20:01And because I pulled him back, the knife came out and cut his ponytail off.
20:06That's how sharp that knife was.
20:08Carlos shoot right by me.
20:10And he grabbed Jose and pushed him up against the wall and said, no, Jose, no, Jose.
20:15And Carlos was keeping people away from Jose, telling the wrestler, y'all stay back, stay back.
20:20So I take Brody, and I take him, and I lay him down on the ground.
20:25And I felt his intestines and blood all over this arm here.
20:30This whole arm was drenched in blood.
20:32And he looked up at me.
20:33He said, brother, don't let them hurt me no more.
20:36Please, brother, don't let them hurt me no more.
20:38He said, don't let them, not him, them.
20:42That's why I didn't know who the hell he was talking about.
20:45Who else is involved in this, I'm thinking.
20:47I said, ain't nobody going to do anything to you.
20:51Carlos tried to approach Brody after I laid him down.
20:55I told Carlos, I said, don't bring your ass over here.
20:58I will knock your mother head right off the shoulder.
21:01He said, Tony, calm down.
21:02I said, calm me down.
21:04I said, y'all just stabbed me.
21:05I had nothing to do with it.
21:06I said, you're a goddamn liar.
21:08I said, y'all work together.
21:09So then Brody turned at my leg.
21:13And he said, let him over.
21:15So as I make my way back through the tunnel, I could hear the noise.
21:19And it was kind of dark in there, but I could see the lights in the dressing room.
21:23Something was going on.
21:24And that's when I asked Mark Youngblood what happened.
21:26He said, invader, invader, stab Brody.
21:30The dressing room is in a panic.
21:33And I see Brody laying, laying in front of me.
21:36And Carlos is leaning over him, talking to him.
21:40He said, Brody, is there anything I could do for you?
21:42That's what Carlo asked Brody.
21:44Brody said, just take care of my family.
21:46And I don't know what Carlos was saying, but I'm sure he's saying, hang on there, man.
21:50We're going to get you help.
21:51We're going to get you help.
21:52But I do remember Brody looking up at Carlos and telling Carlos, tell my wife I love her.
21:58That's the only thing I heard him say.
22:00So that right there tells me that he doesn't have a lot of faith in his own survival.
22:06The shower had a door on it that wasn't clear.
22:09It was translucent.
22:11That you could see light behind it and figures.
22:13Vader never came out of that shower.
22:15He never came out.
22:17And he was in there with Jovica, who was part owner of the company.
22:21And they were screaming at each other.
22:22There was nothing I could really do, just watch.
22:27He walked out of the shower, walked around Brody's feet, went to his bag, got his keys, and he left.
22:35And his shirt, they said, was torn.
22:37Which tells me that whatever happened in that shower, that it was a physical confrontation with Brody ripping the shirt.
22:47It took at least 35 to 45 minutes for the ambulance to get there.
22:52They tried to put Brody on the girding.
22:54They couldn't lift him.
22:55Brody was about 300-something pounds.
22:57He was too heavy.
22:57So I got down in the squat position, squatted all the way down, and slid my arm underneath him.
23:03And he looked up at me and said, don't you drop me.
23:06And I said, don't worry, brother.
23:07I curl more than what you weigh.
23:09So I pulled him gently and laid him on the girdle.
23:13The old man walked back to the back of the ambulance to shut and lock the door.
23:18He said, before I shut the door, is there anybody here that want to go with him to keep his company?
23:25So I said, I go, and I jumped and got on the ambulance.
23:29And I remember guys looking at me like, what in the is wrong with Tony?
23:33He should stay out of this.
23:34You could almost feel they're thinking this.
23:37Nobody was saying nothing, but you could almost feel that they were thinking what is wrong with him.
23:41Like I've said before, I'm not a religious person.
23:43Never have been.
23:44Probably never will be.
23:46But I did go and say a little prayer for Brody.
23:49But whatever worth it could be, if it could help him find it, couldn't hurt.
23:53If we were sitting there in the ambulance, Brody was laying there, and I started crying again.
24:00I mean, I couldn't hold back the tears.
24:02And I sung this song, if heaven ain't a lot like Dixie, I don't want to go.
24:08My voice got choked up, everything got choked up.
24:11I just told him, I said, you're going to be all right, brother.
24:13I said, I'm going to stay with you, man.
24:15I said, I'm with you, man.
24:17I'm with you.
24:17There's an old saying in professional wrestling, consider yourself lucky if you make it out with one true friend.
24:25On this night, Brody had that true friend in Tony Atlas, but he would need more than that to make it out alive.
24:33Tony Atlas finally made it to the hospital with Bruiser Brody in critical condition, although Atlas's struggle to save Brody's life was far from over.
24:49We get to the hospital, and he lay there for probably about 15 or 20 minutes.
24:52I got freaking tired of waiting on the doctor.
24:55So I finally got one doctor that spoke a little bit of English, and I said, I've been telling people my friend's been stabbed.
25:03How come nobody's going to see him?
25:05He told me, he said, a stab in here is like a cold in the U.S.
25:10It's no big deal.
25:11He said, well, I would get to him when I can and turn to walk away from him.
25:16I grabbed him around the waist, yanked him up all the way up on my shoulder just like this, and I carried him there to Brody.
25:23So finally he looked at Brody, he lifted Brody's hand up, and was like this the whole time, just like this.
25:32At the same time he lifted his hand up, I remember I was taking his shoes off.
25:36When I saw his feet, and it was blue, oh, no, no, no, no, no, because I knew this is real bad.
25:46So I said, doctor, please get him in now, now, you got to go now.
25:48He started calling on people, come on, come on, we need some help here, we need some help here.
25:53I got so freaking mad when I saw that, I punched the wall.
25:57I buried my fist probably about up to my elbow in that wall, that's how hard I hit that wall.
26:02While chaos and confusion erupted at the scene of Bruiser Brody's stabbing,
26:07rumors began to fly and word reached across the stadium to Abdullah the Butcher in a second dressing room.
26:13The doctor came and says, Brody was cut or stabbed or whatever.
26:21I said, come on, you know, I thought it was a joke.
26:24In my opinion, I thought it was working an angle.
26:28But when the doctor told me, then I says, holy shit, because the doctor wouldn't be lying.
26:37And that was it.
26:38Brody was, he'd already been taken out.
26:40But the police walked in and thinking, well, it's just another crazy, wild wrestling brawl.
26:48They didn't think it was real.
26:50I was, I was banging on the operating room door talking about what the is going on in there?
26:54What's going on in there?
26:55And the doctor came out and he said, Tony, he had two eight-inch cuts.
27:02He said, we got his intestines back together.
27:06He said, the only problem we have in that is that his liver was sliced.
27:11He told me he was going to be okay.
27:12He said, he's stable.
27:14He said, but what you need to do, you need to go home because everybody in here is more afraid of you.
27:20I wanted to be as far away from that dressing room as I could be.
27:26Then I saw Invader walk in, and he had on a different shirt.
27:31He continued business like nothing had happened.
27:33I don't know why he came back.
27:35I really don't.
27:37I'm thinking, man, what balls this guy's got?
27:40The thing that was so horrible was when I got back to the dressing room.
27:50It was more horrible than the stabbing.
27:52It was more horrible than him laying on that table.
27:56The most horrible thing that happened on that night was going back to that dressing room and hear laughter.
28:04First, I couldn't believe they didn't cancel the show.
28:09That was the first thing I was thinking.
28:11And opening up the door, and the blood on the floor ain't even dry yet.
28:17And they in the dressing room laughing and joking.
28:21And Pat Lee turned on the back talking about how great the matches were and what a wonderful show it is.
28:25I took the freaking chair, and I threw it across the damn hallway.
28:32There was a policeman that said, hey, hey, hey, come down, calm down.
28:35He said, did you see what happened?
28:38I said, hell yeah, I saw what happened.
28:39He said, did you get a look?
28:41Did you get a look at the fan that stabbed him?
28:45I said, what were you told?
28:47He said, everybody in here said that Brody was stabbed before he got in the dressing room, that a wrestling fan stabbed him in the hallway.
28:55He stumbled into the dressing room.
28:57I said, that's a damn lie.
28:59I said, that's some of the bitch sitting right there is the one that stabbed him.
29:02He said, you mean Vader?
29:03I said, yes, I mean Vader.
29:05That sucker right there, that's who stabbed Brody.
29:07I said, ask everybody in dressing room.
29:09He said, they're all telling the difference.
29:10I said, all that, they're all liars.
29:12I said, he the son of the bitch that stabbed him.
29:15He was telling the cops, hey, hey, that's the guy you need to arrest right there.
29:19He pointed to Jose Gonzalez.
29:21A woman sitting right in the chair right there, he was putting his wrestling gear in his bag.
29:25It's like nothing happened.
29:26That's the part that messed with my head so much.
29:28It was like nothing happened.
29:30If you're a policeman and you come into a situation that you think could be staged,
29:37they didn't think it was real.
29:39Tony knew it was real, so they were actually engaging each other from different perspectives.
29:44That's why the disconnect.
29:47In professional wrestling, the line between fiction and reality is intentionally blurred.
29:53As the night's events continued to unfold,
29:56it would be nearly impossible for anyone to tell the difference.
30:00Or to know the truth.
30:09While Bruiser Brody was fighting for his life at the hospital,
30:12Tony Atlas' eyewitness account of the stabbing was making the rounds.
30:16So then that night you wrestled?
30:18Carlos Colon, your timing is over.
30:21That night I wrestled Aaron Sheik, the night of the murder.
30:23I just went and did it.
30:25I just went in the match.
30:26He locked up with me.
30:27He said, how's Brody?
30:29The doctor said he's going to be okay.
30:31He said, you wrestling fan, they told me that they dangerous.
30:35And I said, Jose Gonzalez did it right there.
30:39The sheet just straightened right up, just like that.
30:43That mother, Jose Gonzalez, Vader mother, killed the King Kong of the Brody.
30:51He rolled right out of the ring and went straight back to his locker room.
30:55We only wrestled for maybe one or two minutes.
30:57I go to my room and a guy named Fabio Vega, they call him TNT.
31:04He said, Tony, I got you a bag.
31:06I went to your room and got your bag for you.
31:09I said, for what?
31:11He said, don't go to your room.
31:13They are looking for you because you talking.
31:16So I took my bag and I went down to the beach and I walked the beach the whole night.
31:23I tried to lay down and get some sleep and kept waking up every time I hear something.
31:27I just kept looking, I'm paranoid as hell now.
31:31I go back to that hotel, walk to the front desk and I told the girl and I said, listen,
31:38if Brody gets any calls to his room, please put them through to my room.
31:43They said, okay.
31:45The phone started ringing about midnight.
31:48Kept ringing, ringing, ringing.
31:51By this time it's one o'clock in the morning.
31:53I said, I'm going to answer and give them a piece of my mind.
31:58So I picked up the phone and there was this woman and she said, this is Nancy Cologne.
32:05Well, Nancy Cologne is Carla's Cologne's wife.
32:09I'm calling to let you know there's been an accident and I think you better come to Puerto
32:14Rica.
32:14So I called the hotel and they put me through to Dutch.
32:18She said, who is this?
32:19I said, well, this is Dutch.
32:22She said, well, what happened to Dutch?
32:24And I knew it was pretty serious.
32:26But I was saying, well, Brody had an accident and it's pretty serious.
32:33And that maybe you should come to Puerto Rico.
32:36He didn't have any details.
32:38After I got the call, I tried to go to sleep.
32:41I couldn't sleep.
32:41Like I said, the adrenaline was flowing.
32:43About eight o'clock, I get up.
32:45I go downstairs to the front desk.
32:49I said, can you do me a favor?
32:50And she said, yeah, what do you need?
32:51I said, can you call the hospital that my friend Brody is in?
32:56She said, yeah.
32:57So she calls out there and she's speaking in Spanish.
32:59And I hear luchador, I hear wrestler.
33:05And then she starts crying.
33:08And I look at her and she said, I'm sorry, your friend didn't make it.
33:14I said, what?
33:16She said, no, he died last night.
33:24How did you first learn that Brody had passed?
33:28Abdullah told me at the meeting when I slept on the beach the whole night.
33:32So now I'm going back to the hotel.
33:34I saw Abdullah and some of the wrestlers in the lobby.
33:39And they said, totally, we're having a meeting.
33:41And they're waiting on you to tell them what happened.
33:44Did you ever have any hotel room meetings?
33:49Hotel?
33:50Hell no.
33:51No.
33:52No, sir.
33:53No, no.
33:53Abdullah told us that he didn't have a meeting.
33:56He lied.
33:57Maybe they did, but not me.
34:01You understand?
34:02He lied to you.
34:03If that's what he told you, I'm telling you what happened.
34:07I had 5% of the business.
34:09You see what I mean?
34:10In a way that people did not want to talk to me.
34:13What do you mean?
34:14Well, if you own some of the territory, right?
34:17Who's going to come and say, oh, this happened, or this guy done this, this guy done that?
34:23They were in their own little bunch.
34:27So why would they come and talk to me?
34:29Brody was a friend, and I didn't want to be in all the gossip, what they were talking about.
34:35Nobody heard me say shit.
34:37That's a shame.
34:39That's a damn shame that he done that.
34:41Dutch Man Tell asked him.
34:42He was there in the meeting?
34:45I think we all met in somebody's room.
34:50And somebody said, man, are they investigating this, or what?
34:55I mean, a man died.
34:57What's going on here?
34:58I just started thinking, in this territory, this happened?
35:06That's why I left.
35:08I said, well, I saw it.
35:10So I go down, I make my report to the police department.
35:14He said, your story is different than everybody else's.
35:17He said, we will be contacting you for a court date.
35:23He said, now that we got a witness to it, we're going to arrest him.
35:28Then they took me, and I gave my statement.
35:30And then all through the night, they took statements from the wrestlers.
35:34He did say, he says, you tell Carlos Colon we run this island, not him.
35:39I think they asked, did I see a weapon?
35:41I did not see a weapon.
35:43As a matter of fact, no weapon was ever recovered.
35:46That weapon, whatever was used, what knife was used, has never been recovered.
35:51I've got my bag.
35:53I went to the airport.
35:55And I left.
35:57Then I made arrangements.
35:59I said, I got to go to the airport.
36:02Got on the plane with Jeff.
36:03Get off the plane, waiting to see if anybody was going to pick me up.
36:08So I looked around, and here's Abby.
36:09I was going, and this lady, and this little boy walked up, and she says, oh, Abdullah, you don't know me, but I'm Frank's wife.
36:19She says, how's he doing?
36:23I said, what?
36:25She said, well, how's he doing?
36:27I said, they didn't tell you?
36:29Tell me what?
36:30I says, he's gone.
36:32And she grabbed me.
36:36And she said, oh, no.
36:38All you think about is surviving.
36:41All I thought about was I saw a man get stabbed in his mouth, holding on, and dying with a picture of his son in his hand.
36:48He never put that picture down, brother.
36:50When I put him on the ambulance, he had the picture in his hand.
36:54He laying on the floor, he's still holding that picture.
36:56He'd go in the operating room, he'd never put that picture down, brother.
37:02Never.
37:03The irony of Brody's greatest nemesis delivering this news was only the beginning of the unthinkable events that would follow.
37:12Alone with her son in a foreign land and dealing with the shocking circumstances of her husband's death,
37:24Barbara Goodish found the strength to make the necessary arrangements.
37:28Nancy was Carlos Colon's wife.
37:31She took me to the morgue, and of course, everybody is speaking Spanish.
37:35They took me to the window, and you could just see all these bodies in there.
37:39And then, of course, the reality, boom, just really started to sink in.
37:48Not sure how long it took before it set in.
37:50We were in the hotel room, and I remember crying just incessantly for hours, hours and hours, and I was yelling, screaming.
37:58I still didn't realize the magnitude of what had happened.
38:00And it probably took, I don't know how long, 10, 15, 20 years, maybe.
38:04When everything happened, it was like, what do I do?
38:06And how do I bring him back to the States?
38:11And it was like I heard his voice.
38:13And it was like he was saying, Barbara, you know what to do.
38:17And at that moment, it was, I need to cremate him down here and take him home with me.
38:23There was a very simple ceremony in Puerto Rico.
38:30I mean, nobody was there except me and Jeff and some of the wrestlers and some of the Puerto Ricans.
38:35And Jeff picked out his dad's casket.
38:39It was blue.
38:40When did you hear Jose was arrested?
38:47About three, four days later.
38:49From what I hear, he was taken down to a local precinct, never was put into sale.
38:55Bail was made for him immediately by some big businessmen there, and he walked back home the same day.
39:00And so did you come to learn anything about Jose Gonzalez or any of this stuff?
39:05I know that the, I'm not even going to say his name.
39:09I know that the attacker did it.
39:12From what I can hear from everybody, the whole court case was a sham.
39:16I mean, do you think there was a cover-up?
39:18No, it was not a cover-up.
39:19The only guy that could have covered was Javik and I, and we didn't do that.
39:23Right.
39:23You know, we told the judge in the courtroom, we said, what really, what we saw, we didn't do that.
39:30Because I didn't see any stabbing, I didn't see any weapon, I didn't see anything.
39:34A guy named Tony Rumba, the Boston bad boy, banging on the door, said,
39:37Tony, Tony, put your channel, put the TV on a certain channel.
39:40They're talking about the Puerto Rico thing.
39:42I flipped the TV on, I see Jose on TV.
39:46Coming out of the courthouse.
39:50I said, what, they had a hearing?
39:51He said, no, they have a child, they let him go for self-defense.
39:57You got to be kidding me, they never contacted me.
40:02So you never got contacted?
40:03Never.
40:05Never did.
40:07Never did.
40:08Finally, my subpoena came in the mail for my appearance.
40:11And I already knew the verdict when, by the time my subpoena arrived at my door.
40:18It was 10 days late.
40:19That's why the verdict came back, not innocent, but not guilty.
40:23And Jose never testified.
40:25But they believed what his attorney put out, that he was just merely acting in self-defense.
40:30The fans in Puerto Rico believed wrestling was real.
40:34That was the major reason that Jose was acquitted.
40:37Because they believed Brody was this character, this wild-looking psychopath, hulking figure.
40:45And his defense was self-defense.
40:47Do you believe it was really self-defense?
40:49I don't know, really.
40:50I don't know.
40:50You know, I respect the law.
40:53So sad, I really, you know, I wouldn't want to talk about this anymore because it makes
41:02you sad.
41:02One month after Bruiser Brody's passing, All Japan Pro Wrestling hosted a massive tribute
41:11show, inviting both Barbara and her son Jeff to be honored in front of the 17,000 fans
41:17and attendants.
41:18The honor that they respected and being in that ring and hearing that 10-bell count and hearing
41:26everybody chanting, this whole building, chanting his name, Brody, Brody, Brody.
41:33And I'm just standing there in the ring with Jeff and it was the most, I mean, just to know
41:39how much he was respected.
41:41May peace be with you, Bruiser Brody.
41:44Bruiser Brody was a brawler, mythic proportions, and will always live on as such in the world
41:50of professional wrestling.
41:51I didn't ever guess that I was going to be a professional wrestler.
41:55Once I started in professional wrestling, learned the ropes, if I had it to do over again,
42:02I think that I would probably even pass up my three years in the NFL and devote them to
42:07wrestling because it's been that good to me.
42:09He was one of its biggest stars in the 1970s and 80s and is considered one of the all-time
42:14greatest wrestlers in Japanese wrestling history, where he's still celebrated today as an icon.
42:23Yeah, justice would be great.
42:26Some personal justice would be more gratifying than some legal justice, honestly.
42:31Mr. Brody, every dog has his day.
42:40He cannot kill a legend.
42:42See, legends never die.
42:44So if that was Jose's theme, is to kill a legend,
42:49he fell miserably.
42:54Nobody knows the exact circumstances, including the words, if any, exchanged between Frank Goodish
43:02and Jose Gonzalez on the night of Brody's death.
43:05It remains one of wrestling's darkest, most intriguing mysteries.
43:09Join us next time as we continue to explore the untold stories of professional wrestling.
43:28Brody.
43:29I wish he was here.
43:31Yeah.
43:32I wish he was here.
43:35He dished it out.
43:36I dished it out.
43:37And we kept going and going and going and going.
43:40After the little butcher knows that Bruiser Brody is the king of Bruiser Brody.
43:50Brody.
43:54I wish him.
43:57I wish him.
