00:00It's the breathtaking race that gets the heart pumping.
00:06Let's go Sydney!
00:09With a lot on the line, there was no time for cold feet.
00:12It's been 20 weeks leading up to today, so just glad to get here uninjured.
00:16In their tens of thousands, they ran from North Sydney Oval,
00:19across the Harbour Bridge, went around the city's east,
00:22before finishing at the Opera House.
00:24Known for its rolling hills,
00:26the 42.2-kilometre course is as beautiful as it is brutal.
00:31Ethiopia's Hailey Mariam Kiros took it in his stride.
00:34Kiros ran the fastest marathon ever in Australia in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 6 seconds.
00:42I've been training for a while and also coming here and seeing the course,
00:46but I realised I was strong around that 38 to 40 mark.
00:50Dutch multi-distance runner Sifan Hassan also claimed victory,
00:54smashing a race record by 3 minutes,
00:57with her time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 22 seconds.
01:01And it is good. I feel really happy and I'm so grateful to be here.
01:05The elites weren't the only ones making history.
01:08A record 35,000 people took on the course,
01:11becoming the first ever to run a world major in the Southern Hemisphere.
01:16Sydney joins the likes of Boston, Chicago, New York, London, Berlin and Tokyo.
01:22And with the most elevation of all, it has undoubtedly made its mark.
01:26I didn't know that Sydney has so much up and down the hills,
01:29like Switzerland, the mountains.
01:32It's fitting that that was the hardest marathon I finished,
01:35because I don't know if I would have had this been anywhere else.
01:39There were familiar faces, those reminding people to pace themselves.
01:43Sydney turned up, it's really good.
01:45I'm cooked, cooked as cooked.
01:47Others chose to just run their own race.
01:50Running pluggers, surfboard, board shorts.
01:52Running one step too far.
01:54on this long step too far
01:55No we're good.
01:56program in thirds long,
01:57we're cool, right?
02:00Is there no much money coming off?
02:02That's cool.
