Course records have been smashed at one of the country's most popular marathon events. It's been twenty years since an Australian took out the Gold Coast marathon title. Today, 26-year-old Haftu Strintzos brought it home.

00:31actually not easy at all a record 43,000
00:34athletes competed across the weekend's
00:36events despite the participation boom
00:41organizers have no desire to overtake
00:44Sydney as Australia's largest marathon
00:46listen we're at capacity I think but we
00:49need to change things slightly around if
00:51we wanted to grow the event more than 80
00:53percent of competitors came from outside
00:55the region hoping for a new personal best
00:58I actually flew in from Canada last
01:00yesterday we're North Gold Coast so we
01:02represent the North it's not just about
01:04fast times the marathon wraps a weekend of
01:06opportunity to fundraise with nearly 1.5
01:09million dollars to be donated to charity
01:12from this year's event while some running
01:15costume others took part for loved ones who
01:18couldn't trying to do it for all the
01:20people that have had cancer they don't get
01:22to experience this the battle they go
01:25through there's nothing what we'll go

01:29Broderick and son Kyron clocked up a
01:31grueling 78 kilometers across four
01:34events in honor of his sister Kayla who
01:37died last year after a lengthy cancer
01:39battle the end goal is just about raising
01:42awareness so that people don't have to go
01:43through what my sister went through a
01:45crowd of thousands cheered them on it
01:48gives you a bit of energy just to push
01:49through the line to finish it off
