00:00:13I ask you, I know some of you might not remember, some of you might remember,
00:00:20that I've asked you to write down on a sheet of paper any prayer requests you might have,
00:00:27any situation you might be in. We have our prayer box that is on the offering table up front
00:00:35at the point in time in the service that I'm going to be asking you to bring.
00:00:39If you have a request, we're going to read it down. We're going to go before the Lord.
00:00:43There are some situations that arise in our family that we need extra help.
00:00:48And today we're going to be asking the Lord for that. Amen.
00:00:50At this time we're going to turn it over to God.
00:00:53And so for those, I should make this announcement. I'll make it again at the announcing time.

00:54:33We thank you for allowing us to be in your house of worship one more time.
00:54:37God, we ask that as I stand behind this sacred desk, that you will hide me, that they won't see me, that they shall see the one that you have called to preach the gospel in this hour.

00:54:49We thank you that this word will touch the hearts of your people, that they will leave it a different way than they came, that chains will be broken, lives will be changed.

00:55:02I want to talk to you for the few moments that I was to share from this topic, singing in the dark.
00:55:10Singing in the dark.
00:55:14Acts chapter 16 records a series of conversions that happened during Paul's second missionary journey.
00:55:21His witness for Jesus Christ at this particular time during the infancy of the church spanned outside of the parameters of Jerusalem into Asia, minor, and into Europe.
00:55:34And in this particular event, he got a call from a vision that called him out of Troas into Macedonia.
00:55:41And when he got to Macedonia, Deacon Harris, he settled there in this capital city named Philippi.
00:55:47And there in Philippi, once he settled, the Bible tells us that around verse 13, that when he arrived in Philippi, he stopped by the river and conducted a riverside prayer meeting.
00:55:58And as they were there praying in that area, those that were around them saw and heard their devotion to God.
00:56:06But when we travel down to verse 14, the Bible tells us that they now come in contact with a woman by the name of Lydia, who was an entrepreneurial woman.
00:56:17It is in this verse where her and her entire household, because of the commitment that Paul and Silas had to God, that her and her entire household were saved and baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
00:56:30At that river, we saw their devotion to God.
00:56:34When they arrived at Lydia's house, we saw their discipleship.
00:56:38And after we moved from the conversion of Lydia between verses 16 and 19, we now have an encounter with a young girl who has a spirit of divination.
00:56:48And because Paul understood what this young girl was saying, he understood it, but he understood also that the words that she had had power.
00:56:58And so he cast those words out of her in the name of Jesus Christ.
00:57:04In verse 13, they were at the river.
00:57:07We saw their devotion.
00:57:09When we got to verse 14, we saw their discipleship in Lydia's house.
00:57:14When we get to this verse, we now see their call for deliverance in this young girl.
00:57:21Nobody bothered them when they were at the river.
00:57:24Nobody bothered them when they got to Lydia's house.
00:57:27But now we have come to a bump in the road, Sister Carter, because now Paul and Silas have cast out this spirit of divination from this girl, which now sends the economy of the enemy into a deficit.
00:57:42So let me say this again.
00:57:43When they were at the river, nobody bothered them.
00:57:46They prayed, they sang songs, and yet nobody said a word to them.
00:57:51They just observed them.
00:57:53In the next verse, they got to Lydia's house, and they had their discipleship on display, and they saved her and her entire household, and yet nobody still bothered them.
00:58:04But when they got to the young girl who could tell everybody's future, who could tell what was going on in the next life, they got in trouble with the people that were in charge.
00:58:15Why did they get in trouble?
00:58:16Because they didn't bother nobody at the river.
00:58:20They didn't bother anybody at Lydia's house.
00:58:22But now when they get to this young girl, they now understand that because you have caused me a problem in my life, now I must now cause a problem in yours.
00:58:33And my brothers and sisters here at Emmanuel, I got to understand something.

00:58:38That every now and then you will encounter people who don't have a problem with your prayer life.
00:58:44They don't have a problem with how you call on the name of God.
00:58:47You can invite as many people as you want to to church.
00:58:50But the moment you start to disrupt what is going on in their life, they now have a problem with you.
00:58:57Oh, I wish I had somebody at Emmanuel who could just talk back to me for a few minutes, who understands what it feels like.
00:59:05You've been to prayer meetings.
00:59:06We all, we know what prayer looks like.
00:59:08We have prayer on the Bible line.
00:59:10We have prayer every Monday and Thursday here at Emmanuel.
00:59:14We have Wednesday night Bible study, Sunday morning worship service.
00:59:17Nobody bothers us, but as soon as the enemy realizes that we are putting his kingdom under attack, it shifts his entire plan.
00:59:27And sometimes, my brothers and sisters, the enemy does not like it when the saints of God are disrupting his plan.
00:59:35I wish you could high five your neighbor this morning and tell him you ought to mess up the devil's plan.
00:59:40Mess it up.
00:59:41No matter what the devil said about you, mess up his plan.
00:59:44Whatever he has in store, mess it up.
00:59:48And so now, Paul and Silas, because they have disrupted the plan of the people that are in charge,
00:59:56the Bible now tells us that the leaders in Philippi have now given an order to take Paul and Silas and to throw them in jail.
01:00:09When they were at the river, nobody bothered them.
01:00:13When they went to Lydia's house, nobody said a word.
01:00:17They cast out the spirit of definition from this young girl, and now everybody is upset.
01:00:22Paul and Silas have now been beaten, they've been bruised, they've been bloodied, and now the text tells us that they've been thrown in jail.
01:00:34Their feet are in stocks.
01:00:36Their hands have been shackled.
01:00:38They've been thrown into the lowest part of the jail.
01:00:41But what I like most about the text is that after all of that, they still had a praise in their heart.
01:00:48Y'all missed it, y'all quiet, y'all sleep.
01:00:52Let me say that again.
01:00:54They went down to the river, and they prayed.
01:00:57They went to Lydia's house.
01:01:00They had discipleship.
01:01:01They went to the young girl, and they cast out the spirit of divination,
01:01:07showing that they had power in the name of Jesus.
01:01:10They have been beaten, they've been bloodied, they've been bruised, they've been bound.
01:01:15And after all of that, they still had a praise.
01:01:20Y'all still quiet, let me say that again.
01:01:22They went down to the river.
01:01:24They prayed unto God.
01:01:27They sang their songs.
01:01:28They went down to Lydia's house, and they had a nice little meeting.
01:01:33They told her about Jesus, and she got saved.
01:01:35Her children got saved.
01:01:37Her entire household was baptized.
01:01:39They came into contact with the young girl.
01:01:42They cast out the spirit of divination.
01:01:44They've been beaten, they've been bruised, they've been bloodied, they've been bound.
01:01:48But after all of that, they still had a praise.
01:01:53I wish I had somebody at Mount Olive, that knows what it feels like to have to go through trial.
01:02:01After trial, test.
01:02:03After test, you've cried yourself to sleep.
01:02:06But you still got a praise on your lip.
01:02:10Look at your neighbor and ask them, do you still got a praise in your heart?
01:02:13Do you still have a praise?
01:02:14After all you've been through, after all you've lost, after all you've endured, do you still have your praise?
01:02:22Now, the text tells us, be seated, be seated, please.
01:02:29The text tells us that while they're in jail, that at midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God.
01:02:42Now, Pastor, sometime after my ordination, you told me to go get some books, do some study.
01:02:52And that's what I did.
01:02:54Now, I learned how to study a little deeper.
01:02:56And so, I came across this word, midnight, Deacon Harris.
01:03:01And midnight is, it's very, it's very important to understand what midnight represents.
01:03:09Because midnight is the darkness of yesterday, but it's the beginning of a new day.
01:03:18When the clock strikes midnight, it means that even though I'm still in the darkness from yesterday, I still have hope for today because I'm still here.
01:03:34Oh, y'all missed it.
01:03:35Let me say that again.
01:03:36Yesterday has died.
01:03:39Today has been born and tomorrow has been conceived.
01:03:44Which means if I survived yesterday, when the clock strikes midnight, I ought to have a praise on the inside.
01:03:52Because that means that I've survived everything that came my way yesterday.
01:03:58But when the clock strikes midnight, I ought to have a praise to tell the Lord, thank you for a new day.
01:04:06Ought to be able to let the devil know that what you tried, it didn't kill me.
01:04:11What you did, it didn't take me out.
01:04:13What you did, I should have lost my mind, but I'm still here.
01:04:16Is there anybody here at Emmanuel that's thankful for the fact that you still got your mind intact?
01:04:24And so Paul and Silas have been placed in this jail cell.
01:04:29They've been bloodied.
01:04:31They've been beaten.
01:04:33They've been bound.
01:04:35Their feet have been thrown in the stocks.
01:04:37The hands have been shackled.
01:04:40They've been placed in prison.
01:04:42Now, upon my further study of the text, theologians would suggest that Paul and Silas were not just thrown in any old jail cell.
01:04:56But they were thrown in the dungeon part of the inner prison.
01:05:01Which means, Deacon Harris, I've never been to jail, but I had to do some research.
01:05:07And based on how, I'm being serious, thank God, I'm just being serious.
01:05:12I did some study on how the architecture of those buildings were.
01:05:16And where the inner cell was, it was placed in such a place in the prison that if anybody made a sound, the entire prison could hear what was going on.
01:05:28Now, what I like about the text, Webb and Sheila, is that while Paul and Silas were in jail, they did not allow the situation that they were in to stop them from doing what God had called them to do.
01:05:44Even though they were arrested for preaching Jesus Christ, even though they were arrested for doing what God has told them to do, they still had a place.
01:05:55And even though they were now placed in jail, their feet have been in stocks, their hands have been bowed.
01:06:00But they have made up in their mind that even though you put my feet in stocks, and even though you have shackled my hands, you forgot one thing.
01:06:09You didn't close my mouth.
01:06:12And I wish I had somebody here at Emmanuel that could just thank God for the simple fact that the enemy may try to do whatever he want to do to you, but he has never closed your mouth.
01:06:23And so Paul and Silas, while they're in the jail, I like to think they were looking at each other.
01:06:34And even though they couldn't see each other physically, spiritually, and mentally, they knew that they were in the same room.
01:06:42I can imagine Paul looking at Silas and Silas looking at Paul, and they was like, well, what are we going to do now?
01:06:48And Paul said, well, I don't know what you're going to do, but I'm going to bless the Lord.
01:06:55And I can imagine him lifting his hands and saying, pass me not, oh, gentle Savior, hear my humble cry.
01:07:11Now, while on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.
01:07:22Now, stop right there, because I can see Paul doing that.
01:07:25I can see Paul saying, I can see Paul, even though his feet have been in stocks and his hands have been chained up, he still let out a praise.
01:07:32And so he looked at Silas and said, Silas, what you going to do?
01:07:35Father, I stretch, he couldn't stretch his physical hands, but spiritually, my hand, true to thee, no, though I know.
01:07:58Oh, come on, y'all, come on and sing it.
01:08:00If thou withdraw thy safety, oh, come on, from thee, oh, where thou shalt I.
01:08:21Now, can y'all lament, are y'all there with me, are y'all in the prison with me?
01:08:25We don't took a field trip, but we're looking at Paul, and we're looking at Silas.
01:08:29And the text tells us that while they were praising God, while they were singing praises to him, they didn't know what was going on.
01:08:36But an earthquake came and shook the very foundation of the prison.
01:08:41Oh, I'm almost out of here.
01:08:42And while the earthquake was shaking the prison, the text tells us that every prisoner that was in the jail, their shackles came off.
01:08:50And I wish I had somebody in here that could just help me close this sermon tonight, this morning, because you got to understand that your praise is so powerful that it could shift the very trajectory of the people that are around you.
01:09:04You ought to thank God this morning that whenever you give God praise, it's not just a praise for you, but it's a praise that could change the lives of your children.
01:09:14It'll change the lives of your brother.
01:09:15It'll change the lives of your sister.
01:09:17It'll change the life of your entire family.
01:09:19If there ain't anybody in here that can help me preach this sermon this morning, because I found out, I found out, that while the earthquake was reeling and rocking, when the earth reeled and rocked like an old drunken man, that the chains fell off of the people in the prison, and the jailer came forth.
01:09:42But Paul said, but Paul said, do thyself no harm, for we are all still here, and I wish I had somebody in here that could help me close this sermon, because the jailer ran to Paul.
01:09:56And when he saw what happened, and when he saw what happened, I could imagine he heard the praise, he heard the prayers of the people, and said there must be some type of power in the name of Jesus.
01:10:10I said, what must I do to be saved?
01:10:14Is there anybody in here that could thank the Lord that somebody's going to come to Jesus because of your commitment to God, because of your commitment to Jesus?
01:10:25So keep on praying, and keep on fasting, and keep on serving, but hold up, Reverend Evans, because even though the earth, it had an earthquake in that text, I had to do some more research.
01:10:40There was another earthquake that shifted the whole world, because one flag on a hill called County, they marched, my Lord, from Judgment Hall to Judgment Hall, yes they did.
01:10:55They marched, my Lord, all of the Villadores, they laid him on a cross, they put nails in his hand, they put nails in his feet.
01:11:08They lifted him high, and they dropped him low, but they forgot one thing, that if I be lifted up, I'll draw on me, unto me, or y'all gon' let me preach this thing.
01:11:25So we stayed on the cross, from the sixth to the ninth hour, we stayed on the cross, until the sun drift away, until the sun refused to shine.
01:11:36And the moon drift away, Reverend Evans tells us all the time, that the sun refused to shine, because two suns, they can't shine, at the same time, the S-U-E, and the S-O-E, because the S-O-E was high, and lifted up, and shining, in the light of his hope.
01:11:58They laid him in a tomb, he stayed all night Friday, he stayed all day safe, but early Sunday morning, he got up, with all power, in his hands, and the earth, it reeled in a rock.
01:12:15The veil in the temple, was thrown down the middle.
01:12:19Is there anybody in here, that's glad that he died?
01:12:22He dies with you, he dies with me, and because he lives, I can face tomorrow, because he lives, all fear is gold, and now I know, life is worth living, because he lives.
01:12:40Liberty loved me, dying to save me, buried to carry me, my sin far away, rising, he just survived.
01:12:51Survive, freeing me forever, one day, one day, one day, he's coming back.
01:13:05Singing, singing in the dark.
01:13:10Sometimes, we experience so much in life, that we think that our situation has silenced us.
01:13:21We think that our situation has caused us to have our backs up against the wall.
01:13:29We think that we can't keep going.
01:13:33But just like Paul and Silas, even though it may look like it's over, it's not over, until God says it's over.
01:13:44And there may be somebody here this morning, and you might be going through your own darkness.
01:13:50You might be in your own prison, in your mind, prison in your financials, a prison in your home.
01:13:56But I got good news for you, that if you keep singing in the dark, God's going to pick you up, he's going to turn you around, he's going to place your feet on a solid foundation.
01:14:06There may be somebody here this morning.
01:14:11We offer Christ to you.
01:14:15You can come now, while the blood is running warm in your hands.
01:14:24Maybe you're already a member.
01:14:26When you say, I can't do this journey by myself.
01:14:30If I need somebody to pray for me, I need somebody that's going to help me get through this thing.

01:14:41You can come now, while the blood is running warm.
01:14:43Even if you don't need it, then they need somebody that you know that needs prayer.

01:16:53I'm standing in the gap.
01:16:54Jameer asked me, say, Grandma, the table of church, because I want to go to the church,
01:17:01and I want to go in front of the church, and I need prayer for my mama and my brother.
01:17:07So, Justina just had another baby.
01:17:10Okay.
01:17:11She almost died, and the baby had breathing complications, but, you know, grace of God
01:17:19and much prayer, much power that they're okay.
01:17:22I wish she would be here, but so her son felt the need to be here for his mom, so that's why we're here this morning.
01:17:30You know, the great thing is, Jameer want his mama.
01:17:34Y'all see this?
01:17:35Normally, it's the mama want the son, but now it's the son want the mama, because the, you know why?
01:17:41Because the Lord has placed inside Jameer something special.

01:17:54But let me, let me say, Jameer is already somebody.
01:17:57He's going to be a great young man of God, because he wants to lead his family.

01:18:15I know that some people just don't have that grip or that understanding of what prayer can do.
01:18:28But I'm here to tell you that's powerful when the church starts praying.
01:18:31If you have faith this morning, I'm going to ask you to stand and point your hand towards these that are here.
01:18:40Lord, we don't need, we don't need the words that we're speaking to morning to just a foul on deaf ears.
01:18:48God, we need you to hear our prayer.
01:18:51We're very aware, you're God, that hear and answers.
01:18:55God, we need you to touch this morning, Niteria, right now, Lord, from the top of our head down to the sole of our feet.
01:19:03She's going through some trials that only you can solve, Lord.
01:19:08You a way maker, God.
01:19:10You open doors that we didn't even know were there.
01:19:14We're asking you to open up doors from the north, south, east, and west.
01:19:18Open up doors, Niteria didn't even know, Lord, that you may be able to let her know what kind of God you are.

01:19:29Touched Beverly this morning.
01:19:31You brought Beverly from a long way, God.
01:19:34You're continuing to touch her.
01:19:35And I ask you to continue to minister to Beverly.
01:19:37All in her mind, all in her heart, all in her spirit, that she would grab hold unto you with all she have, Lord.
01:19:44And that she won't even let go.
01:19:46We're praying for Karen Gray's family, Lord.
01:19:50We realize that there's some ups and some downs.
01:19:53And we see even in Justina, Lord, that she has no interest in things that are spiritual.
01:19:59But you got to wait a uniqueness that can turn us all around.
01:20:05You know how to get our attention.
01:20:06We ask you, Lord, wherever Justina is right now, touch her right now.
01:20:12Medicine to her right now.
01:20:13Touch her mind, touch her heart, touch her spirit, Lord.
01:20:17But, Lord, not just touch her.
01:20:19Turn her from the opposite.
01:20:21Oh, Lord, that she may fall down and give her life to you.

01:20:27Little brother who wants to be in the house of prayer.
01:20:32There's some folks here, Lord, that just stand in need of you.
01:20:35We're asking you to touch in a mighty way.
01:20:37Lord, we believe not by our ability, but we believe in your ability.
01:20:45You said, Lord, if we walk by faith and not by sight.
01:20:50Oh, God, we will see the invisible become visible.
01:20:54We're asking you, Lord, to make that which we can't see come visible to us.
01:20:59That we would give you glory in the way we walk and talk.

01:22:56that somebody would give up their way of the world and come and accept you as Lord and Savior.
