00:00A new enlistment day concluded in Venezuela, where the population volunteered to defend its homeland.
00:16On Friday, a U.S. appeals court ruled that most of Donald Trump's neo-charif are illegal.
00:30In Palestine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with the death toll now exceeding 63,000 since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, from the headquarters of Telesur English in Havana, Cuba.
00:55My name is Pablo Micheliche. We begin with the news.
00:58Thousands of Venezuelans responded to President Nicolas Maduro's call to join the Bolivarian national militia to defend their homeland against U.S. threats.
01:06Our colleague Bruno Falci gives us more details in the following report.
01:12In the community of January 23, in the Venezuelan capital, is one of more than 1,000 enlistment points spread throughout the country,
01:21where people voluntarily come to enlist to defend their homeland against the new threats of U.S. invasion.
01:29We are enlisting because we are getting ready for a possible aggression by the North American Empire.
01:37The Venezuelan people will always respond to face any type of aggression, with unity and joining its efforts toward community work, so that we can defend our homeland.
01:45We are always deployed across the country, working for the people.
01:49But at this particular moment, we enlist because we are determined to defend our homeland.
01:59Our historic land, our ancestral land, will not be trampled on again by any empire, whoever it is.
02:05A place of strong symbolism, where the leader of the Bolivarian revolution, Hugo Chavez, rests.
02:16Many people passed by here today, swearing with their lives to defend their country's sovereignty.
02:22In principle, enlistment is not mandatory.
02:29It is not an obligation for young people to go to the barracks to be trained as military personnel.
02:36However, the Constitution says that it is the obligation of all Venezuelans to defend their territory under sovereignty,
02:43and you don't have to be in the military to do it.
02:48A clear demonstration of the country's national unity in the face of any threat of interference in its democratic process.
02:58Here is the evidence. There is no obligation to anybody.
03:04We all have a sense of belonging. We are nationalists.
03:07We believe in peace, and we know that Nicolas Maduro has developed a diplomatic system for peace,
03:12and we are responding by complying with his call without any obligation.
03:17If the illegal economic sanctions applied against Venezuela were not enough,
03:24Washington is now making a psychological war, but the resilience of the people will not be broken.
03:33In the camera of German Medina, Bruno Falci, Caracas, Venezuela, for Telesur.
03:39Alva TCP Executive Secretary Rander Peña said Friday that the U.S. military maneuvers in the Caribbean Sea
03:47violated the 2014 agreement that declared Latin America and the Caribbean as a nuclear weapons prison.
03:54The U.S. military escalation has recently involved the deployment of nuclear submarines.
03:55It's not true. It is not possible that a nuclear submarine can bring peace to our country.
04:00a region that has decided to declare itself as a zone of peace.
04:06Following the 2014 proclamation in which the presidents met in Havana, to declare Latin America and the Caribbean,
04:09the U.S. military operations in their alleged fight against drug trafficking,
04:10and have announced a military deployment, the people knows it, and the whole world has seen it,
04:15that military escalation has recently involved the deployment of nuclear submarines.
04:19It's not true. It is not possible that a nuclear submarine can bring peace to a region that has decided to declare itself as a zone of peace.
04:29Following the 2014 proclamation in which the presidents met in Havana to declare Latin America and the Caribbean a zone of peace.
04:39The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova expressed that her government support to Venezuela
04:46in response to media questions regarding the United States aggression against the region.
04:50During her statement, Zakharova expressed that Russia strongly rejects the threat of the use of force against sovereign states
04:58as an instrument of foreign policy and expresses its solidarity with the people and government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,
05:05which has the inalienable right to freely determine its political, economic and social paths without external pressure in a peaceful environment.
05:15The high Russian official also added,
05:17We hope that the countries of Latin America, which by decision of the leaders of the community of Latin American and Caribbean states in 2014,
05:25proclaimed the continent as a zone of peace, live and prosper without conflict or armed interference.
05:32False intervention, practices and color revolution methods must remain in the past forever.
05:38For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Ivan Hill, welcomed the support of the Russian government
05:49and reiterated Venezuela's right to decide its own destiny without external pressure.
05:54In his response, Hill said,
05:56On behalf of President Nicolas Maduro Moros, we appreciate the firm statement of the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova,
06:04in relation to the recent deployment of the United States Navy in the Caribbean Sea.
06:09The presence of nuclear submarines off our coast represents an unacceptable threat to the sovereignty of Venezuela and to peace in our region.
06:18The Venezuelan foreign minister also added,
06:20We reiterate that Venezuela has the inalienable right to decide its own destiny without external pressures.
06:26We appreciate Russia's support, which reaffirms its commitment to the defense of our sovereign principles and our territorial integrity.
06:34Hill's statements concluded by saying that,
06:37It is fundamental that Latin America remains a zone of peace, free of forced interventions and conflicts.
06:43International solidarity is key to ensuring a stable and prosperous future for all the peoples of the region.
06:58And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,
07:02where you will find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
07:07Welcome back.
07:10On Friday, a U.S. appeals court ruled that most of Donald Trump's new tariffs are illegal,
07:15but can stay in effect until October 14 to give time for a Supreme Court appeal.
07:21The split decision from the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.
07:26addressed the illegality of what Trump calls reciprocal tariffs imposed as part of his trade war in April,
07:33as well as a separate set of tariffs imposed in February against China, Canada and Mexico.
07:40The court ruled that the president does have the legal authority to impose narrow sectoral tariff,
07:46like those on steel and aluminum imports, but he far exceeded his power with the global tariff on imports he first declared in April.
07:55Despite the illegality of Trump's actions for having exceeded his powers, he remains optimistic and assures that he will get away with it in court.
08:04The Brazilian Federal Police, in conjunction with tax authorities and other agencies, carried out the largest operation against organized crime in history,
08:20the action against the first command of the capital, an organization linked to drug trafficking, reveals connections to financial capital.
08:28Our colleague Ignacio Lemus gives us the details.
08:31Amidst United States' rhetoric of fighting drug trafficking as an excuse for military occupation of the region,
08:44Brazil carried out the largest police operation in its history with 1,400 agents to dismantle a criminal scheme by the criminal organization First Command of the capital in the fuel sector.
08:54Search and arrest warrants were issued in eight states. The hidden carbon operation discovered that the group evaded the equivalent of more than us $1.4 billion in taxes.
09:09We managed to decipher the very sophisticated money trail. There are many layers, for example, linking closed funds in layers to which, in order to get to the criminal's assets, you need the intelligence of auditors who open the accounts of those funds to understand where the money is coming from.
09:28If it weren't for that, we wouldn't have been able to get to more than a thousand gas stations for refineries and more than a thousand trucks at the disposal of organized crime to transport fuel, which is generally adulterated.
09:49Sometimes the adulteration begins at the import stage with fraud. In other words, it is an extremely capillary scheme from a material point of view and extremely sophisticated from a financial point of view.
10:10The organization used the legal fuel market as a means of illicit enrichment through the financial market and its satellites in tax hands.
10:24There is a key figure in money laundering fintechs. That is, digital technology companies serving the financial market, which offer payment, credit, and investment services at a lower cost than traditional banks.
10:37They do not have physical branches and are difficult to regulate. Their activities were authorized during the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
10:45Organized crime today is very sophisticated because it is in politics, in football, in the justice system. It is everywhere. It is a very powerful international force. What we have discovered is that there are many people linked to organized crime.
11:06More than 350 individuals and companies are involved in economic, environmental and financial crimes, including money laundering and tax fraud.
11:19The first command of the capital controls at least 40 investment funds, with assets exceeding $5.4 billion, according to the Federal Revenue Service, Brazil's Tax Authority.
11:29The first capital command is the largest criminal organization in Brazil, and its growth was financed through drug trafficking.
11:36For the first time an operation against the group is not entering the fabulous armed, but rather the epicenter of the financial market.
11:44It is very significant that Faria Lima, that center of wealth in the city of Sao Paulo, is the focus of an operation that demonstrates its link to the PCC.
11:59This is because traditionally, the mainstream media and political sectors linked to the right wing have tried to link the first capital command to the poorest, blackest sectors of society, to the peripheries.
12:14First capital command linked funds financed the purchase of a port terminal, four ethanol plants, 1,600 tanker trucks, and more than 100 properties, including multimillion dollar estates in the interior of Sao Paulo.
12:30Now in Honduras, the free party calls for a mass rally in San Pedro Sula, in the north of the country.
12:40The Liberty and Refundation Party of Honduras confirmed that the mass mobilization will take place this Saturday, August 30, in the city of San Juan Pedro Sula.
12:49The call to action, announced by the movement's general coordination and led by former President Manuel Zelaya, is shaping up to be a political milestone that, according to its leaders, will mark the beginning of a new popular victory ahead of the general elections on November 30.
13:06More than 30,000 groups will join the march, led by Manuel Zelaya and the presidential candidate Rishi Moncada, in defense of democracy and in the face of external and external threats.
13:19On Friday, the attorney general of the state of Bolivia, Ricardo Condori, stated that the criminal proceedings against Luis Fernando Camacho and Marco Pumari are under development.
13:37Condori asserted that there are more than 400 pieces of documented evidence pointing to the guilt of the defendants.
13:44In addition, the prosecutors cited digital records, in which Camacho allegedly stated that he had reached agreements to carry out the coup during Nebo Morales presidency.
13:55Condori also emphasized the importance of the trial continuing until a verdict is reached, whether guilty or not guilty.
14:02For her part, the Ministry of Justice and Institutional Transparency, Jessica Sarabia, confirmed on Thursday that the government had filed an appeal against the court decisions that allowed Camacho to be placed on the court.
14:13Camacho to be placed under house arrest and for Mari to be released.
14:16Camacho Pumari to be released.
14:43Now, in Europe, in Hungary, the Foreign Minister Peter Csijarto shows that the EU is isolated from world politics.
14:48On Friday, during his speech at the Transit Politica Festival, Csijarto stated that this situation was reached through a series of bad decisions and dramatic mistakes by the President of the European Commission, as well as the
14:58politics. On Friday during his speech at the Transit Politica Festival, Sijarto stated that
15:03this situation was reached through a series of bad decisions and dramatic mistakes by the
15:09president of the European Commission as well as the political elite who are mostly in favor of
15:15the European war. In this regard, he cited the bloc's failed attempts to sanction Russia under
15:20the pretext of ending the conflict with Ukraine. The foreign minister also added that these mistakes
15:26have definitely led to Europe reaching a point today where its competitiveness is not even
15:32politically decisive on a global level.
15:41And we have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to join us as we tour Cuba
15:46in search of community projects that work every day for the country's present and future the Cuban way.
15:53From Monday to Friday at 4.30 pm, Caracas and Havana time only on Telesur.
15:59We will be right back, stay with us.
16:17Welcome back. In Palestine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen with the death toll,
16:22now exceeding 63,000 since the death conflict began on October 7, 2023.
16:28Gaza's health authorities reported that 59 more people were killed and 244 injured in the past 24 hours alone,
16:36bringing the total number of deaths to 63,025, with over 159,000 others wounded since the start of the genocide.
16:45On the other hand, 23 people were killed on Thursday while trying to receive humanitarian aid,
16:50raising the number of AIDS-seekers killed in Gaza to more than 2,200.
16:55The growing hunger crisis also claimed five more lives, including two children,
17:00pushing the number of starvation-related deaths to 322, according to health officials.
17:05The Spanish government plans to present a project to stop the genocide in the Gaza Strip,
17:19which includes combating famine in the Palestinian enclave and extending sanctions against Israel.
17:24Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez intends to present this plan at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen.
17:31Álvarez stated that it is imperative to expand the list of sanctions to include all those who wish to thwart the two-state solution,
17:40which, he assured, will bring peace and stability to the Middle East.
17:44In addition, it must be ensured that no country in the European Union sells arms to Israel
17:49and that support for the Palestinian Authority continues so that it is not economically suffocated.
18:01In Spain, three years after the death of Colombian youth, Brian Rios in police custody,
18:08family members and activists demand justice.
18:11Our correspondent, Andrés Flores, with more details.
18:16Brian Rios was Colombian and arrived in Spain with his family in search of a better life.
18:22In 2022, he was arrested by the local police in Rubí, in the province of Barcelona.
18:28He died in police custody, under circumstances that are still being investigated.
18:34He was arrested on the night of August 20, after attending a family barbecue celebration.
18:41He went out to buy beer.
18:47He didn't return.
18:48When we went to look for him, we found that he was being detained by the local police.
18:52At around 11.30 p.m. they took him to the Cap Mutual in Taraza, where they gave him three doses of sedatives.
19:01And 30 minutes later, less than 30 minutes later, they transferred him to the Maso Stay Squadra police station,
19:07where he died around for a clock a.m.
19:13During these three years, Juliana was accompanied by activists and lawyers.
19:19Together they made progress in the case, although there is still work to be done.
19:23At the beginning of the year, forensic doctors, nurses who were at the Cap, the Cap Doctor,
19:30and the Maso Stay Squadra police were called to testify.
19:36From the platform, we are disappointed that the local police, who made the arrest, were never called to testify.
19:44At this point, the doctor is charged with medical negligence, and we are waiting for a trial date.
19:49Both family members and activists emphasize that this is a case of police racism,
20:00and insist on the need for justice to be done, and that migrant lives matter.
20:07The Justice for Brian Rios platform views these cases of police racism with great concern,
20:12and above all, the lack of transparency about what really happened.
20:16Why was Brian Rios arrested?
20:19This racial profiling that we have normalized in the arrest of migrants or racialized people
20:24is a real danger to our lives.
20:26Migrant lives are in danger in police custody,
20:28and if there is no family or support network behind them, these cases go unpunished.
20:37Activists, family members, and friends demand truth, justice, and redress.
20:41André Flores, Telesur, Barcelona.
20:49Mexico prepares to host the 20th edition of the Black and White International Piano Festival in 2025.
21:07This year, the festival will focus on romanticism, presenting eight recitals at the Blazcalindo Auditorium of the National Center for the Arts from September 6th to 28th.
21:19The program will include works by various composers, reflecting a rich variety in piano production.
21:25This festival promises to be a tribute to the richness of the piano and cultural diversity.
21:31It will feature performances by young Mexican talents, such as Alexander Vivero and Rashid Bernal,
21:37upstanding pianists on the country's music scene.
21:41In Lima, a variety of ancient treasures found on the central coast of Peru were exhibited.
21:54The exhibition offers visitors a glimpse of various findings made at the Bixama archaeological site,
22:02discovered 18 years ago, a place where the Caral civilization lived between 3,000 and 1,800 before Christ.
22:11Among the artefiles on display is a model of two frogs made of raw clay,
22:15an ending symbol associated with the arrival of the rains, the availability of water and the regeneration of life.
22:24Also on display are two models, also made of raw clay, with representations of buildings demonstrating the technical knowledge of urban planning of this ancient population.
