00:00His name actually means hidden, or God has hidden, Hebrew word Safan, and in his prophecy
00:09which you're going to read it says, it may be that you'll be hidden in the day of the
00:12Lord's anger, speaking about a place of protection in the time of judgment.
00:17It speaks a lot about the day of the Lord, which we're going to look at tonight, and
00:22the concept of the day of the Lord can mean the end of days, particularly the last days
00:27before the, in our view, the return of the Messiah, but it also has the implication of
00:32the day when God acts, when God does, moves into historical events, so God is moving and
00:38showing his power through things which are happening in the world, particularly in the
00:43land of Israel, and part of Jephaniah's prophecy can be seen as a prophecy of the coming invasion
00:50of the Babylonians, which took place in the, under the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, and
01:00when Babylon invaded, it invaded not only Israel, but affected the surrounding nations, including
01:05Moab and Ammon and Assyria, all of whom were devastated by the coming time of trouble, but
01:12it's also looking beyond this time, and we're going to look at it mainly in terms of the end
01:15of days, the day of the Lord, the day when God's wrath comes on a sinful world, but also
01:22promises a place of deliverance for the believers who will be hidden in the day of the Lord's
01:27anger, that's one of the big themes which we're going to look at tonight.
01:31And the final verses of Zephaniah very much speak of the blessings of the coming millennial
01:35kingdom, when the Messiah is going to reign, and the king will be in the midst of us, Yeshua,
01:41Jesus the Messiah. And so he's warning us both of a coming time of trouble, but also of the
01:47need to be in the Lord, so to be ready for his coming, be hidden from his wrath. So let's
01:53read some verses from Zephaniah, we're going to read first of all from chapter 1 and verse
01:5714. It says,
01:59The great day of the Lord is near, it is near and hastens quickly. The noise of the day of
02:04the Lord is bitter, there the mighty men shall cry out. That day is a day of wrath, a day of
02:10trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess,
02:17a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities
02:22and against the high towers. I'll bring distress upon men and they shall walk like blind men,
02:28because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood shall be poured out like dust and their
02:32flesh like refuse. Gather yourselves together, yes gather together, O undesirable nation, before the
02:42decree is issued, or the day passes like chaff, before the Lord's fierce anger comes upon you,
02:48before the day of the Lord's anger comes upon you. Seek the Lord, all you meek of the earth,
02:53who have upheld his justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility. It may be that you'll be hidden
02:59in the day of the Lord's anger. And then some verses from chapter 3, verse 9, speaking of the
03:06restoration. Then I will restore the peoples to a pure language, that they may call on the name of
03:12the Lord to serve him with one accord. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, my worshippers,
03:17the daughter of my dispersed ones, shall bring my offering. In that day you shall not be shamed for
03:23any of your deeds in which you transgress against me, for I take away from your midst those who
03:28rejoice in your pride, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain. I will leave in
03:35your midst a meek and humble people, and they that shall trust the name of the Lord. The remnant of
03:41Israel shall do no unrighteousness and speak no lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their
03:46mouth, for they shall feed their flocks and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.
03:53Sing, O daughter of Zion, shout, O Israel, be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
03:57O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord has taken away your judgments. He has cast out your enemy,
04:04the King of Israel. The Lord is in your midst. You shall see disaster no more. In that day it should be
04:10said to Jerusalem, do not fear, O Zion. Let not your hands be weak. The Lord your God is in your
04:16midst. The mighty one will save. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will quiet you with his
04:21love. He will rejoice over you with singing. I will gather those who sorrow over the appointed assembly,
04:29who are among you to whom it is reproaches a burden. Behold, at that time I will deal with all
04:35who afflict you. I will save the lame and gather those who are driven out. I will appoint them for
04:41praise and fame in every land where they were put to shame. At that time I will bring you back,
04:46even at the time I gather you. For I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth
04:52when I return your captives before your eyes, says the Lord.
