Edwin Rosario takes on Ezzard Charles Adams in a Super Bantamweight bout in a fight that happened earlier in the night before the HBO telecast started.
Transcript
00:00Superbantamweights, the distance 10 rounds.
00:04Introducing, in the blue corner, from Houston, Texas,
00:08weighing in at 132 pounds, here is the hard-punching Ezzard Charles.
00:16And in the red corner, a gentleman undefeated in 22 professional fights.
00:21He hails from the country of Puerto Rico.
00:24He weighs 131 and one-half pounds.
00:26Here is the popular Edwin El Chapo Rosario.
00:32Ten rounds of boxing.
00:34The referee is Harry Krause.
00:37Ray, the thing that strikes me about Edwin Rosario
00:40is he is a guy, considering the limited experience he has,
00:42who is very, very poised.
00:44I mean, he really gets in the ring and looks like he's in control.
00:47Well, Barry, without question, Edwin Rosario's championship material,
00:51I mean, he's a young man with so much natural talent under his belt.
00:55But the guy he's got tonight, Ezzard Charles, out of Houston, Texas,
00:58no relation to the former heavyweight champion, Ezzard Charles.
01:02He has a 14-5 record, 12 of those 14 victories coming by the knockout route.
01:06So any time you get in against a banger, you have to be on your toes.
01:09Well, quite naturally, I think you become reluctant.
01:12And with a guy like Ezzard Charles, a relatively unknown, yet known for his power.
01:16He's a guy who can punch.
01:17There's no question about it.
01:18But so, too, can Rosario.
01:19As a matter of fact, Rosario was on the card with you when you fought Thomas Hearns.
01:23And he was very impressive in that outing.
01:25You just saw, for a moment, the record of Ezzard Charles, 14-5.
01:28Rosario, 22 victories, no defeats, 21 of those 22 victories coming by way of the knockout.
01:34He is a kid who can punch.
01:37Situation like this, Carlos, where you know you should beat your man,
01:41everything says you should win this fight.
01:42But still, there's always a chance that somebody's going to jump up and hit you one.
01:47That's true.
01:48And, you know, when you fight a guy that can punch, regardless of your ability,
01:53you know you have to be watching for a guy who can punch.
01:55You know, one punch can change a whole fight around.
01:58And I noticed that Rosario has got a lot of ability, especially defensive ability.
02:04Move very well.
02:06But he was very careful.
02:09Tell me about his nickname, El Chapo.
02:11El Chapo means it's sort of an endearment to calling someone near a midget.
02:16Oh, I feel bad.
02:17You didn't answer that, right?
02:18That's right.
02:20I figured Carlos' Spanish was probably a little bit better.
02:23We're in round one here.
02:24This is Edwin Rosario.
02:25He is on the left of your screen.
02:27Ezzard Charles in the blue trunks.
02:29He must have borrowed those trunks.
02:30I've got to say that.
02:32Well, Ezzard Charles, he's a very, an off-docks fighter.
02:37Very difficult to pretty much land some plain blows.
02:39And what I was impressed with Rosario is the fact that he utilized the whole ring.
02:44And he's a versatile fighter.
02:46In fact, he figured out his style and saw weakness in Charles and took full advantage of it.
02:51This is the first round.
02:53Scheduled ten-round fight.
02:54Edwin Rosario, Ezzard Charles, Charles, blue trunks, white stripe.
02:57As you mentioned, kind of an awkward fighter, wild swinger, but he can punch.
03:07Early in the first round here and really not a lot of action going on.
03:11Sartorially, Rosario is all the winner.
03:13You know what Charles wants to do.
03:19In fact, he's buying his time.
03:21He wants to get Rosario up against the ropes so he'll be able to bang with him.
03:25And that's exactly what a type of fighter that Ezzard Charles is.
03:29He wants you to exchange punches and fight his fight.
03:31I saw a moment ago, Rosario with a pretty good left-hand counterpunch that time off his right hand by Ezzard Charles.
03:40Charles draws a warning for grabbing.
03:45Right hand on the side of the head by Rosario, but no damage on Charles.
03:48Rosario just shows me an awful lot of poise.
04:01Shows an awful lot of confidence to me for a guy who, he's had 22 fights, but he really hasn't been fighting professionally for that long.
04:08Time ticking down in round one, coming down on the 22nd mark.
04:13Rosario flicking left jab up on the head of Charles.
04:15He hasn't quite solved the awkward style of Charles yet.
04:18Charles whistling right hand across the chest of Rosario.
04:21No damage here in the first round, as are Charles and Edwin Rosario.
04:29Whistling right hand just over the eyebrow of Charles, but Charles comes back at him.
04:33Charles seemingly a little bit cautious now as we wind down at the end of round one.
04:39We're going to have a chance now to go to the other locker room.
04:42That is the locker room of Wilfred Benitez.
04:44We apparently have been given permission to go inside now.
04:46And that is the expression that you're going to see on this man for the duration, I'm sure.
04:51That is a confident look on Wilfred Benitez.
04:53In fact, I remember having a little fist fight with the guy inside the ring back in 79.
05:00And Benitez, I'm very impressed.
05:02And I've learned a great deal from this young man.
05:04He, too, is a guy who is not known for his training habits.
05:08One fight that he had, he went south for a week, went to Orlando, Florida with a girlfriend.
05:13And this time, though, I would guess there's just no kidding around.
05:16Oh, without question.
05:16Benitez is in tremendous shape.
05:20I think he'll have to be.
05:21I think he'll be dumb not to have gotten in really great shape for this fight because he's going to need it.
05:27But I think Duran is going to jump all over him.
05:30He's going to have to be in top shape.
05:31And you can see him there smiling.
05:33And that's confidence.
05:35In fact, both he and Duran look very loose.
05:37Not nearly as tight as I might have expected.
05:40In fact, to be very honest with you, Ray, not as tight as I've seen you be in the locker room.
05:43Well, sitting back in the dressing room, you're waiting.
05:49Just like Rosario, the way he moves.
05:51I mean, he buys his time, very patient.
05:54And one thing I'm very impressed also with Rosario, his balance.
05:57Very, very important in a fighter, your balance.
06:01You can almost see the wheels turning in Rosario's head as he's trying to figure out into Charles
06:06and trying to figure out what to do with him.
06:10Wild left hand by Charles.
06:12As you might have seen, Charles grabbed the left hand of Rosario.
06:14He's done that a couple of times in this fight.
06:16Drew a warning in the first round.
06:17This is the second round of a scheduled ten-round fight.
06:21Edwin Rosario trying to extend his unbeaten streak to 23 fights.
06:25He has knocked out 21 of his first 22 opponents.
06:28This fight took place earlier this evening.
06:31We show it to you now on the heels of a one-round knockout.
06:34Michael Doakes, very impressive in winning the North American Boxing Federation heavyweight title from Lin Ball.
06:42Knocking the man out.
06:43Down three times and finally out in the first round.
06:50On the ropes, Rosario, very impassive look on his face as well.
06:55You know, it's the way Rosario moves out of trouble.
06:58He gets in the corner and he pitches the way out.
07:00You know, my wife is in Atlantic City and she likes me to fight this way.
07:05Right, Juanita?
07:07She'd like you not to fight at all.
07:09Not at all.
07:09Not a bit.
07:10Coming down to the halfway mark of round two.
07:17As of Charles, holding his own pretty well.
07:19Rosario, and I believe Carlos mentioned that he is just trying to figure out the awkward style of Charles.
07:25He's not quite done so yet, although he still is dictating the tempo of the fight.
07:29Again, Charles grabs on to the left hand of Rosario.
07:32Well, Charles is a frustrating fight.
07:34He gets inside and he has a tendency.
07:36He's what I consider a spoiler.
07:38Good test, nonetheless, for a guy like Rosario.
07:44You had to go through a few guys like that.
07:46Oh, yes.
07:47And fighting guys of Ezra Charles' caliber, it gives you a great deal of versatility.
07:52It enables you to fight guys like Tommy Hearns and Duran and Benitez.
07:57In fact, we were talking earlier today and you were saying that a guy named Marco Seraldo,
08:01who is not exactly what you'd call a top-line guy, hurt you maybe as much as some of the bigger guys.
08:06He was one of the few guys that was able to hit him with a good shot, Barry, and really it stayed with me for a long time.
08:13A couple weeks.
08:13Carlos, you have those same kinds of experiences coming out.
08:15Oh, definitely.
08:16It looks to me like Ezra Charles is physically very strong and he's trying to use that upper body strength to do his work.
08:28Right hand comes across the face of Rosario.
08:30There's a right hand up on the chin by Ezra Charles who leans in on Rosario, back to the ropes.
08:34And that is the end of the second round of the Rosario-Charles fight.
08:44Charles actually extending himself fairly well, but nonetheless, the facial expression of Edwin Rosario, just very impressive, no expression at all.
08:51I would guess even if you don't feel like you are in control of a fight, you have to kind of make your opponent think that you're in control of the fight, that you're dictating the tempo of the fight.
09:02Well, without question, Barry.
09:03Here we see Ezra Charles pretty much on top of things as he puts Rosario in the corner and he wants to keep Rosario there because this is his style, inside, fighting.
09:13Because Ezra Charles is a very physical fighter, but here we see Rosario coming back with a few punches of his own.
09:20Neither fighter has really scored with any impressive punches so far.
09:23Rosario, as you mentioned, has seemed at least to me to be in control of the fight nonetheless.
09:27This is round three.
09:27Oh, without question, Carl.
09:30This is Ezra Charles.
09:31Charles breathing a little bit through his mouth.
09:33That's something not a lot of trainers like to see their fighters do.
09:37Sign of fatigue.
09:39Sign of not putting in the road work.
09:43Well, in fact, the man who we're waiting to see, Wilfred Benitez, again, has been criticized by his own father for not putting in the time on the road.
09:55Whoa.
09:56And that is just...
09:57You know, we just saw how physical Ezra Charles was.
10:02Rosario still impassive, just walks around, looks at him, waits for things to get started again, and now they do.
10:07Now, normally, if something occurred with the average fighter, he gets frustrated, he gets upset, and loses his school.
10:13And as we see, Edwin Rosario, a very composed fighter, maintains his school.
10:18Rosario might have taken Charles' best just a moment ago, a left hook to the chin, and Rosario didn't take a backward step.
10:25This is the third round, scheduled for 10.
10:31Rosario seems to be picking up the pace a little bit here.
10:35Well, I think you see a weakness now, Ezra Charles, because for a certain reason, Charles keeps his guards up very, very high, but I think he's vulnerable for some uppercuts, because I noticed that Edwin Rosario threw a couple uppercuts, and that landed very...
10:47That uppercut there.
10:48Uppercut scored, and a right hand, chopping right hand, preceding it, also scoring to the side of the head of Ezra Charles.
10:54Coming down on the halfway mark, and now Rosario really pressing the action here against Charles.
11:02Another uppercut.
11:03One thing about Rosario also, he's a very good finisher.
11:05He hurts his opponents, but takes full advantage of it.
11:08And very few fighters are capable of doing that.
11:10Another right hand, scored, and that hurt, Ezra Charles, and a whistling left hand on the side of the head.
11:19Doesn't miss a lot of punches, and that's something that you don't see in a young fighter either.
11:22Another right hand, and a left hand behind that, and another right hand sends Charles back into the ropes, and a chopping right hand.
11:27Another right to the top of the head, and the third right.
11:29And another right hand, and down goes Charles.
11:32And he's not happy with himself at all.
11:35There he is.
11:35You know, Charles is wasting energy punching on the canvas.
11:41Could be his legs are gone.
11:42That's it.
11:43That's it.
11:44So even though he had the energy in his upper body, he had nothing left in the legs.
11:47And any fighter will tell you, when the legs go, it's all over.
11:52And still, Rosario shows no expression at all.
11:56Very impressive combinations of punches, though.
11:58He hit him with about five right hands.
12:00Well, let's take a look at the talent of Edwin Rosario.
12:03A very good puncher.
12:04Puts the punches together very, very well.
12:06Throws a series of combinations.
12:08Hurts his opponent, and here we see taking full advantage of Ezra Charles as he throws a continuous overhand right.
12:14Comes back with the left up cut, and a right hand that sends Ezra Charles to the canvas.
12:18Right hand was a classic punch as well.
12:21We'll have a look at it from another angle.
12:22Carlos, talk us through this.
12:23You know, I'm very impressed with Rosario.
12:26He knew it hurt Charles, but he didn't go wild throwing punches.
12:31He's very composed, picking his shots, making sure they're going to land, and not wasting any energy.
12:36And those right hands, I think, were doing a lot of damage.
12:38And this one was a finisher.
12:40Well, he threw about six punches there, and I think he only missed one.
12:45And even that one, he didn't really miss.
12:46It kind of brushed the top of the head.
12:47Ladies and gentlemen, the time.
12:49Two minutes, seven seconds of the third round.
12:52A winner by a knockout, and still undefeated, Edwin El Chapo Rosario.
12:58Sal Rosario is the winner.
13:03That is his 23rd consecutive victory, his 22nd knockout.
