00:00South Africa has more people living with HIV than any other country in the world.
00:05When US President Donald Trump slashed America's foreign aid budget, the impact was immediate
00:11as free clinics closed their doors, leaving patients without medication.
00:15Our lives matter.
00:17We are human.
00:19The funding played a significant role in our lives.
00:24The clinic would come to my apartment, give me services there, they would come test me
00:29in my home every three months, give me my refill, I would only go to the clinic for my prescription.
00:37Whenever I needed condoms or lubricant, the clinic was there to give me.
00:41Patients say they've been forced to buy HIV medication on the black market, where pills
00:47have nearly doubled in price.
00:50Others say they've been turned away from public hospitals, even though authorities insist that
00:55shouldn't be happening.
00:58The government has vowed it won't let the US withdrawal of more than $400 million in
01:03support collapse its HIV programme.
01:06But it's struggling.
01:08We are scared.
01:09We are scared that we are going to see high numbers of people living with HIV rising.
01:14We are scared that we are going to see people dying again.
01:17We are worried about the number of infants that are going to be born with HIV because
01:21the lack of services, what the reality is, the funds that we used to get from USAID was covering
01:28a gap that our government couldn't fix.
01:31More than 63,000 people depended on the 12 clinics across the nation that shut down.
01:37Up to 220,000 people have faced disruption to their daily HIV medication.
01:43The US has issued a limited waiver, allowing some vital HIV services to resume.
01:49But the cuts in aid have created chaos.
01:53And for many of those affected, the damage is already done.
