The South Australian government will introduce a new travel voucher tourism scheme. With 20,000 vouchers on offer, the state government hopes to show support to communities affected by the toxic algal bloom across the state.
00:00South Australia's coastline is a tourism drawcard.
00:05But since the algal bloom made itself known in March, it's been killing marine life and also changing the way we use our beaches.
00:12That's been taking a financial toll on tourism providers and accommodation and experience makers along the coast.
00:20So this voucher scheme is open to operators from Kingston South East all the way to Coffin Bay in the Eyre Peninsula including Kangaroo Island to nominate themselves to take part in this voucher scheme to boost those local economies in their time of need.
00:37Expressions of interest open tomorrow for those operators.
00:41This is being put on by the state's tourism commission and South Australians aged 18 and over can put themselves forward to go on the running for a voucher.
00:51They're valued between $100, $200 and $500 for these experiences and accommodations.
00:58Now 20,000 vouchers are going to be up for grabs and the travel period goes from September right through to November.
01:06It's part of a 28 million state and federal government support package.

01:15There's nothing we can do to treat it per se.
01:17But what we can do is show support to those communities that are affected.
01:21Entries to go on the running to get one of these vouchers open next month.
01:25And it has been welcomed by the state opposition.
01:28They were calling for state tourism vouchers like these to be revived.
01:32They were very popular during the 2022-23 River Murray flood to help those local communities recover.
01:38And so it's very much hoped that this scheme will do the same.
