Tasmania local voucher scheme hopes to boost spending in winter quiet period

As the weather cools down, and with the cost of living on the minds of many Tasmania's tourism and hospitality sector is eyeing the winter ahead. But, there's optimism that a local voucher scheme will give the sector a boost and get locals out exploring what the state has to offer.

00:12The state government is hoping a tourism voucher scheme for locals will help provide a buffer.

00:18Premier Jeremy Rockliffe taking a moment out of his Mother's Day brekkie in Devonport to give them a spruik.

00:24This will be that added boost to small businesses, the local economy, but also this is also a cost of living measure as well.

00:33Born out of the spirit of Tasmania ferries replacement saga, the vouchers are part of the government's Tourism and Hospitality Support Package

00:41and will be able to be used on eligible dining, accommodation or tourism experiences during the quiet winter period.

00:49Hopefully people that otherwise would have ventured outside of the state will choose to have something in their own backyard.

00:55You wouldn't be spending it on bills because it would be like a nice gift, so you'd be like, well, might as well go out and use it.

01:00Enjoy it, yeah.

01:01We'd take the whole family out, it would be certainly very helpful.

01:05But, not all are convinced it's the right use of money.

01:08This is a really, really critical time for Tasmania. We've got a government that's cutting back on essential services in health and education,

01:14but now wants to give out $10 million worth of vouchers. I think this is the wrong priority.

01:19Registration for the vouchers will open for two weeks from Monday the 2nd of June.

01:24Recipients will be allocated at the end of the month through a random ballot process.

01:29They'll then have until the end of October to put them to use.
